I am SO glad I came to this animal shelter to adopt! This experience was honestly so good. I went to Rancho's animal shelter to adopt but the dogs I was interested in were no longer there. While the facility did look clean, my goodness, it smelled so bad. So I came to this animal shelter on a whim and the building is so nice. I was helped immediately, everyone was friendly, and I went to go look around at the dogs. I found a dog I was interested in but was on a hold. I was told that once the dog is no longer on the hold, I could call and set up an appointment for a meet and greet. Well, my first time at this shelter was on Wednesday, the dog was no longer on the hold today (Saturday) so I made sure to call and make an appointment for a Meet and Greet. The lady told me she had times available same day and I was able to meet the dog a few hours after making the phone call. I came in, I was helped promptly. And I got to meet the dog. I asked the worker if I would be able to walk the dog. It was a little misty outside so she gave me a jacket to give the dog and the staff member was with me outside with the dog and she was so friendly. Once I was done, I let the staff member know I wanted to adopt and she let me sit with the dog a little longer while she got the paperwork ready for me. The fee was not bad at all because it included the adoption fee, vaccines, check up with vet, pet insurance for a month, neuter, and microchip! Once I completed all the paperwork, I was given all the forms in a nice little folder and a bunch of flyers and coupons. I was also given a goody bag and a variety of blankets to choose from. I wish I remembered the lady that helped me because I truly feel like she made this experience extra special. She set up his neuter appointment so I haven't gotten a chance to take him home yet, but I'll be able to after he's neutered. Absolutely disgusted with this place after a friend's experience today. She found two beautiful kittens (strays) but one was in serious distress. She took them to the Upland Animal shelter thinking someone would help this poor baby. Instead she was met with dismissiveness and attitude being told by employees she could just wait for the cops since it was already close to closing. One wouldn't even look at her, just kept walking to her car. While I understand procedures and hours of operation, this is NO WAY to treat someone who's trying to help little creatures who cannot help themselves especially with the heat wave we're experiencing in Upland this week. Please keep this in mind when thinking of donating to this place. Disgraceful. read more

I adopted an adult kitty yesterday on 5/25/26 and the experience at the shelter was overall good. I loved that they gave us a bag of food and treats, toys, a blanket, etc. They also gave us an opportunity to sign up for a free 30 days of pet insurance. And they microchipped him. 24 hours later, my kitty is at the vet because he has tapeworms!! I am upset because they allowed us to adopt a sick cat. I noticed the tapeworms and soon as he made his first bowel movement at home. I took him into the vet first thing this morning. And even though we received a free 30 days of pet insurance, his treatment will not be covered because it is a pre-existing condition. There's no way the shelter staff didn't notice his tapeworms unless they really weren't paying any attention to his stool. So either they noticed and did nothing about it or weren't being thorough with his care. I wish this had gone differently. read more

I truly don't understand how this shelter operates. When we went to cancel our paperwork because they suddenly disclosed the kitten had ringworm, they looked at us like we had done something wrong -- as if we were the problem for not wanting to bring home a contagious animal. My roommate then adopted a different kitten after being told he was completely healthy and ringworm-free. Fast forward: my roommate is now covered in ringworm, his cat has it, my 3-month-old puppy has it, and I have it too. Our home is completely contaminated. I've spent over $1,000 on vet bills alone trying to treat my puppy, and it's been over two months of nonstop cleaning, disinfecting, and reinfection with no end in sight. This shelter is clearly negligent. They rush people to pay the $100 adoption fee but fail to conduct basic medical screenings or disclose contagious conditions. Every time you ask about an animal's health, they claim everything is "fine" and "perfect" -- which is clearly not true. The amount of stress, anxiety, financial loss, and disruption this has caused is unreal. If I could take legal action, I absolutely would. Stay far away from this shelter. read more

We fell in love with a sweet dog named Violet there and were all set to start the adoption process. Unfortunately Violet had a medical issue that required "at minimum 14 days" of medication. They were very clear with us that Violet would not be permitted to be adopted before finishing her medication. We were told she was being held for us with all of our information on file. In between that time we came to the shelter several times to see her and say hello. My 6 year old daughter was so excited for her to become part of our family. On day 10 I called just to see how she was recovering and if we could start thinking about coming in to adopt in a few days. I was told "oh I'm so sorry Violet has been adopted. It says here you were no longer interested." To be clear NO ONE FROM THE SHELTER CALLED ME. We were still very interested, we had purchased supplies and were getting our home ready for her. Why tell people you can place a hold on an animal if you are just going to give it away to the next interested party? My family was heartbroken, especially my daughter. read more

We brought our little fur baby here to get chipped and his last vaccine. I was so happy to hear they offer discounted rates from time to time. I think usually Sundays with no apt, that's what we ended up doing. We were there for a good hour or so, but every staff member we met were so kind and loved on our doggie and we enjoyed chatting with them. Honestly surprised to see such horrible reviews for this shelter, since we had such an incredible experience! My husband and I were looking to adopt a dog and had several bad experiences when reaching out to other shelters both nearby and far. We stumbled across Upland Animal shelter and took a risk - jumped in the car to make the drive from Santa Barbara with no appointment, and no high hopes. We were pleasantly surprised as the adoption team was SO kind and immediately let us walk-in to view the pup we had our eyes on. The facility was clean, large, and a lot different from the other shelters we had visited. The volunteers were super helpful and even let us browse the other pups, just to see if we were interested in any other dogs. We were also able to do a meet and greet on the spot, and right away, we knew our pup was the one! After talking to the volunteers (we later learned was the interview process), filling out some paperwork, we were able to take our pup home the same day. Even after coming home, Upland Animal Shelter was incredibly helpful with our additional questions, and they even gave us a ton of coupons and guides on how to navigate a new puppy. This was our 5th and last shelter of the day, we were VERY impressed at how clean this one was. They even have classical music playing in one of the kennel bays. We saw a dog we liked, did a meet and greet then went home to discuss. The volunteer that took him out for us was very friendly. Went back a few hours later to do another meet and greet.... the second volunteer was also amazing and knowledgeable. They even walked the dog thru other kennels to see how he would react to other dogs. We agreed that we would rescue the cutie, paperwork was fast and easy. The front desk was super helpful giving us all the info we needed for picking him up after being neutered to all the info in the adoption folder. We even got some treats and toys for our lil guy to come home to. He's been home for almost 24 hours and he is such a sweetie. We are so happy to give this guy his furever home! read more

Do not waste your time here. After spending 10 days waiting for a small dog to be released from "stray hold", and two conversations prior regarding this dog, where I mentioned I did have a child they allowed me to make an appointment to see the dog with my son. Only to be called back and told they were canceling my appointment because I had a child. When asked why they believed this 5 lb dog was not good with children, they did not answer and admitted she had not been around any children they knew of. When I pressed further, they informed me that if they allowed me to adopt her and she bit my child they would be liable. When I asked about signing a release of liability when I adopt the dog, which I assume is common practice, I was told "that's not really how that works". So if you have adopted an animal from the shelter and they are involved in an incident, the shelter is liable? If this dog wasn't suitable for children, that would have been mentioned upon the first or second conversation had with them, if it was a viable concern. I was informed when they were canceling my appointment, that again, they agreed to make knowing I had a child, that there were "many people looking to adopt her", yes, I was aware. That is why I did my due diligence and went through all the right channels. So to conclude: they could not give me a reason as to why this dog wasn't suitable for children. AND they were worried about their liability after adoption? And if you MUST adopt here, do not mention you have a child. read more

Came here for the low cost/free vaccines. I have been to to other places before or even went to the Golden State Human Society which was first come first serve and too much of a wait. Here at the Upland animal shelter, I was able to get an appt. I came in filled out a quick form and then was directed immediately for assistance. I was in and out in less than 10 min. Making an appt was super easy, checking in for the appt was also quick. The vet tech was great and friendly and they were done in a couple of minutes. I really appreciated that the DHPP shot was free. They seem to put out monthly vaccine appt dates and also offer walk-in days. I would highly recommend for anyone to come here if you're looking to keep you pets UTD on their vaccines without breaking the bank. I've been trying to adopt a cat for quite a while and have been searching everywhere. I saw two cats on their website that I was interested in seeing. Tried to make an appointment, since they are only seeing people by appointment only, and ran into some difficulty. They would not allow me to see both kitties I was interested in during one appointment. I guess they are not allowing people to adopt 2 cats? Since I'm driving from Hesperia, which is about 2 hours r/t, it doesn't make sense to limit my ability to see only 1 cat per appointment. But they would not allow me to see both cats of interest. If they are that unreasonable before you even have a chance to see the cats, I did not make an appointment. People working with animals should do everything they can to facilitate the adoption process. They obviously don't do that here. Doesn't make any sense. read more

Arlene! Just wow! I have had nothing but positive experiences coming here! From the front desk staff, to the beyond clean kennels, friendly volunteers, to no pressure environment! We have been looking for the "one" for a few months, taken pets out for one on one and none sat just right. UNTIL TODAY!!!! Omg! Everything was beautiful and happened effortless! Arlene works in the front, she has the BEST attitude, she's very informative, and makes everything so easy. The other front desk women are also very helpful but when we left, she was helping us and you can just see her passion for animals and truly cares about who's taking who home. I had had my heart broken after attempting to adopt a dog from another local shelter. As a result of that experience I would peruse the photo gallery of shelter websites & then call to inquire about the health of dogs that I was interested in. That is how I found JT. He was a 2 1/2 year old terrier mix. Upon finding out he was available & in good health, we made a B-line (huh, what does that even mean?) there. They brought him out front & let me introduce him to my 10 yr old dog. The introduction went well & we brought him home. After a quicky name change, he blended beautifully into my home. He is a hit at the dog park, just about everyone loves him. When he turns on the charm, he is irresistible. I didn't trust myself to go back into the kennels so I only saw the reception area. But at some shelters you can smell the kennels from the parking lot. That was NOT the case here. Everyone was really nice and very accommodating. I'm really happy with my experience adopting Baxrer here. I'd like to say I'll be back, but these 2 dogs are going to live forever & I will never need to peruse shelter websites again! Horrible service!!!. I desperately waited for them to open at 11am to take in a 3 week old abandoned kitten only to be turned away. They told me they have seen 1000 cats and this kitten probably will not survive and be put to sleep simply because he appeared lethargic. I asked them if they would at least attempt to feed him and treat the infected eye with eye antibiotic ointment and they said they can try but they really didn't have enough volunteers nor are they a vet. Left me feeling helpless and I was so angry that I just stood there and cried my eyes out. The lady at the front who has half her head shaved is the rudest most heartless person and has no business working there!! I took the kitty home and nursed him back to health with simply syringe feeding with KMR and using terramycin eye ointment in the eye. He has done a full recovery in a little over 24 hours. He eats around the clock, is playful, and purrs. I have never been so disappointed with an organization that supposedly are there to shelter animals!! Their lack of sympathy was mind blowing. I will never visit this shelter again nor ask for their assistance with anything having to do with pets. read more

We went in to see Julie yesterday and they said she was not available until today because of a health issue. My husband and I called 10 times between 11- 11:10 and no answer. 11th call and they pick up saying she's already going to be seen. Adopted a mixed German Shepherd dog from here during the COVID pandemic. They practiced great public health guidelines: all employees and visitors had to wear a mask. Visits were by appointment only and held outdoors. One masked volunteer brought out the dog for us to meet / interact with. Very easy adoption process: called to schedule the appointment beforehand and got the dog's relevant health and background information then. Once we completed the adoption papers, they even gave us our dog's own travel box, which included a blanket made by a volunteer and brand new toys and treats. Since our dog needed his rabies shot, we picked him up next day from the Upland Animal Hospital. Overall, friendly and helpful staff, and a great new member of our family! I found a dog that recently gave birth and I'm trying to take it to a shelter before I have to go into work, I'm frantically calling a bunch of places to see who can take her and all these so called shelters are voiding and saying she was not found in the jurisdiction I found her off the mountain freeway exit in upland how the fuck is that not in uplands jurisdiction?! So we called uplands animal shelter and explains how I found her near off the freeway exit off mountain and they said that's not thier jurisdiction and what side of the freeway did I find her on? I told them I don't know if it wan on the right or left and they just completely voided her and told us we need to go to Pomona! We called Pomona and all these near by other places and no one answered and we got sent to a lot of voicemails and number pushing to get directed no where. So we took her to the upland shelter after trying to find an alternative, they asked where she's from so I said near 8 th st which is near the freeway exit, i took her they asked some questions, and then I filled out a paper, then they told me They already told me they will not take this dog because it wasn't their jurisdiction but when I called and explained, i had to call multiple shelters and animal control, i even got dispatched to police and they told me to take the dog to friends If upland animal shelter, so I go to there and then They're telling me i have to take the dog to Pomona! Like I have time to go there My boyfriend was already late to work by an hour and a half and I was supposed and I was supposed to go in to work soon after! and I told the workers/ security officer and she didn't care I have no where for this dog to go and like they couldn't hold the dog till the other shelter could send someone or called to help this dog! Absolute the worst experience ever and makes me not want to help stray animals anymore because I'm still stuck with her rightnow! And I need to go to work, I don't live on my own so taking her home isn't an option, and I have literally no where to have her! When I told the security officer that the other shelter they had me calling in Pomona was not accepting calls and no one was answering they told me I had to take her there because obviously people are there they have animals to tend to, the officer talked down to be and was rude while trying to explain this to me and make me feel stupid! As others have mentioned, the employees here are great, and these wonderful dogs needs homes, but the adoption manager is super rude and a low key liar. I had called in to inquire about a dog at the shelter, and the lady I first spoke with was very nice and explained that the dog was on stray hold but they could make an appointment for me to come in after the hold expired, assuming an owner did not come to claim her. Fast forward to the next morning, and I'm waking up to the manager calling me at 8:51am and saying she was cancelling my appointment. I kept waiting for an explanation (you think she would lead with that) and when none was given, I asked her why the appointment was was being cancelled. She finally, and tersely, explained that there was "potentially an owner in the mix" and that no appointments could be made until after the stray hold period was over. She told me, and I quote, "to check the website", as the dog would only be removed if an owner came in to claim her. I was groggy and said that was fine. After I woke up and started working, I called the shelter at 9:59am (I have call records for everything) to get more information about the adoption process if an owner did not come to claim her. No one picked up, so I FB messaged the shelter to make sure there wasn't a waiting list I had to get on, as this is how it works in LA county. They get back to me and say the manager already told you there is an owner coming to pick the dog up and she is not available for adoption, acting like I was trying to game the system or something. WTF. At no point was I told the owner was coming in. Why the hell would I want to take a dog from another family? And why would you even lie about telling me that? Bottom line, the manager here is a real piece of work. She does not belong in a public facing role. It's sad that this is the interaction point people have to deal with when all they want to do is adopt a dog looking for a home. They want you to "adopt not shop" but make you feel like a criminal trying to do so. Nice. read more

The lady in the front gave me specific details about her personality and what type on environment would fit her best. I rescued 2 dogs from the inland humane and never received the service I did here. There kennels are also very clean and have music for them! I wish other shelters could be as nice as this one. I adopted 3 of my guinea pigs from this shelter. They were very kind and friendly, and let me meet my new piggies in their meet and greet area. The facility is clean and during the winter time they put little jackets on all of the dogs that may need it. They try their best to help care for the animals that are relinquished here, as I noticed that the piggies being housed here before I adopted them did have some veggies offered to them. I knew the shelter was moving some time ago, and I knew it was going to be in memorial park. I pulled in at YMCA, rounded the corner was was blown away by the size of the new shelter!!! It is massive!!! (pictures to come upon my return). We walked in and said we wanted to look at cats. Signed in and where directed to the kitten room. All of the cats have a mutil-level little room so they can actually walk, jump and roll around. They are all behind glass so you can not pet them. But if you ask they will open the door and you can pet/hold them. They also have a little area to sit down and play with the cats. We looked at a couple of cats and will return to pick one (or two) up. We also took a walk around all of the kennels. They have a small dog area inside, each dog has an OK sized cage to sit in. As you walk down the hall you can see the full vet area they have setup. When you get to the back hall there are multiple kennel areas for the dogs. We walked around and all of the areas where clean, each dog was well marked and they had special instructions for dogs that needed special care. I was quite impressed they had older dogs there, and according to the cards some of the dogs had been there for quite some time. All of these cages are inside so even in the cold and raining the animals are well protected. They do have an outside area for you to walk and visit your new dog. A couple of things stuck out to me. They had a few dogs that had some form of work done to them, either surgery or just being fixed up from being out on the streets. I like this as it seems like they do not just put down and injured or sick dog right away. With the cats they where neutering them before anyone had committed to adopt them. I have not seen other shelters do this. I know once you commit to adopt with will do the surgery, but not before anyone is willing to adopt them. They also seem to have a bit more of a no kill attitude. If they have space they will try to keep animals as long as they can. At least that is what the website makes it sound like. Even if you do not find an animal you want here, please keep looking to adopt. Puppy/kitten mills are just not good karma. A rescued animal will always love you. This year, there were also light refreshments and treats provided for pet parents, too! Photo sessions are by appointment only and each year the shelter has set dates in which the sessions are held. Dates for holiday pet portrait sessions are usually posted on the Friends of the Upland Animal Shelter's website by late November or early December.
