I live on Kelly Hill. I had a water pump issue & my belts came off. They initially quoted me for $430.00. I was fine with it even though it was high. 1 hour goes by they said they found something else & inflated the price to $660.00. I paid it, but the shady business practices they utilize is very dishonest & disheartening. My advice is too NEVER take your car to this place. I'm reporting them to the Better Business Bureau. Very bad people whom take advantage of their customers. Shame on them. Do not take your car to these predators. read more

If I could give zero stars, I would. Took car in to get clutch repaired and broken window engine looked at. They repaired the clutch, but left the door panel flapped and unscrewed upon returning my car. I took it back for them to screw in, waited an hour and 15 mins for them to screw it in, when I discovered they did it incorrectly and didn't put on panel. I viewed the workers put on the door, they did not speak english nor look very competent. They left a piece of my inside door unscrewed and loose. I took it back a 2nd time, and surprise surprise, they did it incorrectly again (locks won't work now). After paying fifty dollars for their half hour of labor for opening my door panel, you'd think they'd treat me with a little more respect and do it properly. Now i'm left with a problem that they could not fix that I did not have bringing it in! My impression is they do not care about customers that aren't regulars and according to other friends who've been there, they have a tendency to screw people over. BEWARE, I would not go here if you're looking for an honest or reliable mechanic. read more

Took my71 Monte Carlo to check the brakes. They told me it was going to cost $920 they said the master cylinder was leaking and the hose from the gas tank was leaking and that I could not drive my car out I would have to have it towed if I didn't want them to do the job. I refused stating that I would drive my own car home and advised them that my car was not leaking any fluids when I brought it in. I had somebody else work on it and it only ended up costing me $125 and they advised me that it appeared the brake line and the fuel line had been slashed. I will never take my car there again. read more

Needed a smog check and figured I would try out my local auto shop. I was pleasantly surprised by their professional and courteous service, and getting me in and out quickly. A few weeks later I decided to take in our Nissan Murano to Upper Grove Auto Repair to get the brakes done. They did a fantastic job, and the brakes feel like brand new; at a very reasonable price. This is a great example of a well-run business that is doing a lot of things right. I would highly recommend giving them a chance on your next service. read more

I can't say enough good things about this shop! I had an issue with my Hyundai Sonata running rough, and took it to Upper Grove. Cynthia, the new owner, was very patient with me as I attempted to describe the problem. She got her mechanic right on it and they were able to diagnose and fix the problem (a dirty fuel filter) the same day! The price for the repair was quite reasonable( much less than taking it to the dealership) and my car is running like new now! The service was always nice and friendly, and I loved the family owned business atmosphere...My parents and I used to go here for years and although I cannot prove it I am fairly certain we were being way overcharged almost the entire time. This is why I won't be returning here ever again. Liars and crooks. My car overheated, they did one perfunctory test and decided it was the head gasket. Charged me 150 for running the standard diagnostic test and quoted me $1, 700+. Imagine my surprise when a second look at Neal's Mufflers (corner of Grove and Redwood) revealed it was a simple tubing issue- - a $300 fix! The crooks at Upper Grove would have taken me for everything and not fixed the issue. When I was there, the co-owner was on the phone talking about her several-thousand-dollar vacation she was taking with the extended family; a trip funded, I'm sure, by their gouging gullible customers. read more

Funny I wrote this review about 9 months ago and it disapeared only the bad reviews stay posted what is up with that? great service excellent communication they call you with cost before performing any work so there is no way you will be overcharged all of my vehicles problems were clearly explained to me and all of my defective parts were shown to me afterwards. The office staff was very freindly and the mechanic was very knowlegable this is the 3rd time I have used their services prior time was for major repair best price and it comes with a waranty you could not ask for more i am very happy! read more

My car stalled on the freeway right off grove. The tow truck driver drove me here and I talked to Mark. He was able to get the car in and find the problem the same day. DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR HERE. My father took his truck in to be fixed. They charged him $504.92, we paid CASH!! Less than 24 hours later my fathers truck broke down again. They towed it and claimed they do not know what's wrong with it. The lady gave my father a nasty attitude and yelled at him. My father demanded a refund. After giving my father a check. We took it into the Fremont Bank and they told us "They do not have the funds to cash the check." 3 days later still no money to cover the check. After calling them They told my father " We have to pay rent it's $2000 so maybe tomorrow you should be able to cash the check." The rent of the company has nothing to do with customer service and giving out a check you know won't clear. read more

Took the 2011 Crown Vic in for repair of the Heating and Air Conditioning unit. (Hasn't worked for about a year. Blows air, but neither hot nor cold.) In addition to repairing the HVAC system, several other repairs were recommended and our invoice totaled $1550+. A bit of money, but very happy that we should have a system that worked! Well, husband drove the car off the lot. The heater and air conditioning unit did not work. Blowed air that is neither hot, nor cold. George said to bring the car back in tomorrow morning and they'd fix it at no additional cost to us. Took the car back in, and George reiterated that it would be repaired at no cost to us. (I should certainly think so!) Carmen arranged for a rental vehicle due to the inconvenience. The next day, received a call from Carmen with an update and recommendations for another $1500 in repair to get the heater and air conditioning unit to blow heat and cool air respectively. Very disappointed. Much dialogue and Carmen proposed replacing one of the less costly recommended parts at no cost to us. This would provide us with heat and cool air, just not at the maximum capacity. Wished for a fully operational HVAC system, but questioned paying an additional $1500! Car was ready later in the day. Unbelievable! The unit blows air, but neither hot nor cold. Carmen recognized that "they are human" and I recognized that the shop is not one that I would recommend. A small refund was issued ($225) for the HVAC "work" that was done. Again, we still have no operational HVAC system. read more

I took my daughter's car here for a problem with the alternator ( due to a incorrect repair job done by my son-in-law) and a burned wire which had left her stranded in Tracy on Christmas Day. The first estimate was $109 for labor, which was reasonable. Later he phoned to tell me that the alternator alone would cost $480. After I checked local parts stores and found a couple of alternators for well under $200, I went to the shop and told him this. He tried to tell me that this was the high output system hence the more expensive part but, miraculously, the price of the alternator dropped to $250!! Two parts stores also told me that there was only one alternator for all models of this car. I asked him where he had purchased the alternator. When I called that specific parts store, they told me that they didn't even stock that part!! When I confronted the shop with this information he told me that he must have gotten the last one. Baloney! The parts store didn't say they had run out. They said they didn't even stock that part! I had them complete the repair. They told me that the problem was that two wires to the alternator has been switched. From my personal experience (26 years in the automobile repair, parts, and distribution business), I did not see how this was possible but I accepted the explanation and the $508 (!!!) bill to get my daughter back on the road. This shop seems to depend on the ignorance of their customers. I think I encountered at least two "fabrications" during this process. I would not deal with this shop again! This guy was "BS-ing" me all the way. read more

I went to this place once... the key word being ONCE. I took my car to them with an overheating and smoking problem. The bill came to over $1,600.00 but the problem was never fixed. The people at this place don't have a clue. I was told by a friend of mine that this place IS family owned, and that it USED to be a great shop. That is, up until the husband died. (The one who started the business in the first place.) Now, the wife Carmen runs it, and she's running it VERY POORLY. She let's her head "mechanic" do all the thinking. The problem is... he has nothing to think with. I ended up sueing them for my money back. It seems like everyone I ever talk to about this place already knows how bad they are. I stopped by Upper Grove a couple of weeks ago just to ask a few questions regarding some work I needed to have done on my commuter car. I remembered this shop because of a battery I purchased back in October of 2015 from them. Cynthia who's the new owner meet me in the office. At first interaction Cynthia was very personable, attentive and she carefully listened as I explained the issues I was having with my car, she gave me the information I needed and I left. The very next week I dropped my car off to them, she had the technician go though everything I asked about. By end of day I had spoken with her and she thoroughly explained what I needed to have done right now vs what I could wait to have done, plus gave me some great advice. I slept on it and the very next morning I called Cynthia with the green light to do the repairs, she ordered the parts and by the time I got off work they had my car ready for me to pickup. Carmen is the office manager and she is great. I took my Ford Ranger in because i warning light came on and i wanted an oil change on top of that. The day after i took it in they said there was something severley wrong with the sensors and they couldnt fix it, however they did recommend somewhere local that had specialized in electronic problems. I asked how much i owed and Carmen told me the oil change was on the house cause they couldnt fix it. A couple days later i got a call from Carmwen on my cell phone and she said she thought the technition left the remote control for the diagnostic machine. She asked if i would return it to them and when i went up there to do so they gave me a coupon for another oil change...customer service is great read more

Out with the old, in with the new. New owner, fantastic service location. Been here in years past with inconsistent service, but with Cynthia in charge, it's practically a whole new enterprise. Staff are friendly and professional, if a little preoccupied with their work sometimes (I prefer this. I like to see everyone focused on the job at hand.) Brought in my Pontiac for an overheating problem that coincided with an insurance claim resulting from vandalism. The insurance company got a little carried away with managing the incident, and turned the whole ordeal into a mess, but Upper Grove Auto put out the effort to look out for my interests, not just what the insurance company told them. Cynthia, the new owner/manager, is wonderful to interact with, and she goes out of her way to make sure she does everything she can for customers both past and future. I'm extremely pleased that i gave this shop another shot, and I will absolutely keep their number close at hand. read more

I have been bringing my families multiple vehicles to Grove Way Auto for over 20 years. Recently the family business was bought by a new family. I was worried but my first and second encounters with the new owners was incredible! They fixed everything perfectly and were so personal asking how my day was going and really taking the time to listen when I answered. ANY business that takes the time to get to know their customers is great with me as I am in customer service myself. I am very impressed with new owners and am getting the same great service and pricing that I have always gotten! This place does not know what customer service is. They are liars and crooks. I had to take my car back in twice for them to fix my passenger window. The first time I took it to them they said that it would be about a 2 hour job. I did not receive a phone call so after 4 hours I called they said they are working on it. It took a total of over 5 hours to fix. So after forking out $411.03 (which the part was only $88.18 and $315 in labor charges). I took my car back. Then after a week, I rolled my window down and it would not go back up. I pulled over and pulled up on the window and it worked. I got to work and immediately called them back. I set up an apt for that Friday telling them I had to take another day off from work for them to fix a problem they already were suppose to fix. So on Friday I dropped off my car at 8:11 am. They said again it would take a couple of hours. Again after 4 hours I called and asked how things were going. They said the mechanic could not find out what was wrong cuz it was working fine. I also explained that after I got my car back the passenger side lock did not work and I had to lock it manually. I explained that it worked before I dropped it off for my window to get fixed. Needless to say after 5 hours I received a call from the shop stating that they are going to get a new motor but they can't get the motor till Monday. (they only work Monday thru Friday, closed Saturday & Sunday). I was very upset and said that will be a big inconvenience cuz I have to take another half a day off and I would not be able to drop my car back off till 1:30 or 2:00. I asked that they can guarantee that my car will be done by 5:00 when they close. So I dropped my car off at 1:46pm and they said that it will be about 2 hours (their favorite time). Again after 3 hours I had to call and ask them how things were going. They said they are almost done and their driver will be leaving to pick me up. I went outside and waited over 25 minutes and no one showed up. I had to call and they said that he had not left and the mechanic was still finishing up. My son came home and had to take me to the shop. When I got to the shop where my car was still in the stall and the mechanic was still working on it. My son dropped me off, I went into the shop and signed the paper and still had to wait almost 25 more minutes to get my car. I got in my car and tried the window and it worked. So I drove a little and tried it again it works but is seem to hesitate. I am nervous to put my window down now. I did not arrive home till after 6:00 pm after dropping my car off at 1:46pm. They are untrustworthy and they are crooks. read more
