This was a pleasant surprise. The food was delicious. The bartender made me drink a la carte and it was amazing (perfect blend that satisfied my appetite). The two favorites were the hot pepper chicken (shrimp option) and the creole bbq shrimp. The decor in the place, the art work was beautiful. Went back the next morning for breakfast. I again ordered Creme brûlée French toast. It was excellent. My wife ordered one of the omelets. She loved it. It was enormous and sadly she could only finish half of it. The waiter was quite pleasant and he was quite attentive. He frequently visited our table refilling our coffee cups and asking if we needed anything. We will definitely visit for breakfast again. read more

Food was fantastic! Delicious and unique - however the wait staff was a less than professional. After making an insulting comment to our table, we were informed that automatic gratuity was applied to the bill - 20% to be exact. The interesting part was we followed up with the host station which said automatic gratuity was NOT their standard practice. The manager said it's up to the server's discretion; so apparently if your server doesn't like you, Uptown will just force you to pay at least 20% gratuity. My BF thought it would be a good idea to go here one night for some traditional Cajun cuisine. What a let down. The menu seems very dated and not very Cajun. I sent back the rice and beans due to the fact that the beans were mushy with no flavor and the rice was under cooked. Save yourself a trip and wait till you can get the real deal. We met my sister in law who was in from St Louis. We got there early, which is suggested. Their menu is simple, but has lots of options. I got a spinach, bacon, mushroom and cheese omelette. It was wonderful. The eggs were fluffy and the spinach was very fresh. My husband got the Avocado toast, which looked amazing. My sister in law got the creme brulee french toast. She said it was delightful. My only criticism is they do not have a kid's menu for brunch. They do for other meals and we were not the only group that had kids. We were able to find something for my daughter, but she did not eat all of it and a smaller portion would have been nice. read more

I am from out of town; my two IU-Bloomington friends said they often dine at the Uptown Café and have never had a bad meal so that is a great recommendation. The décor and ambiance are both quite pleasant and relaxing. Later that evening I returned for a cocktail at the Uptown Café Bar, which is quite classy and relaxed. I liked it a lot. One of the female bartenders was cordial; the other female bartender was a bit aloof and I did not care for her attitude. I used to eat breakfast here every Wednesday, but as prices climbed our breakfast group dwindled. I no longer go. The place has a nice atmosphere and food is decent, although if you don't like Cajun dishes your choices are limited for dinner. It is also expensive and meter parking in Bloomington will cost you another couple of bucks AND you have an extra one tax on your meal to supposedly raise money for an expansion of the Monroe Count Visitor and Convention center. After your $40 to $50 meal ticket for two, add $2 for parking and $.55 in additional tax besides sales and restaurant fees plus and 20% tip, it add up to about $62 for dinner. read more

This is one of the nicest and "fancy" places to eat in Bloomington, IN. I would say top 1 out of three! Their food is sooo good and they have some amazing and delicious deserts. Their apple cobbler they have is very good and you can tell that all their food is most likely prepared fresh and not canned. My husband and I are regulars for dinner. I usually get the shrimp and grits but like to change it up with steak, crab cake, or spaghetti agliatta. The cocktails are delicious-- usually get the old fashioned, but last night I tried the Martinez at the suggestion of our server. It was unique and wonderful. I always enjoy dinner here even if it is a bit overpriced. Then...the brunch. I have always wanted to try it, but I found it disappointing. I was so excited to try the smoked salmon eggs Bennie. Didn't realize that it was cooked salmon rather the smoked salmon of the lox and bagel variety. First of all, it came out cold, and the salmon was dry. The "home fries" were leftover potato wedges from dinner. Cappuccino was decent. Maybe I caught them on a bad day, but I doubt that I will be trying brunch anytime soon. The four stars really come from the dinner. Would give brunch 2-3 stars. Especially for a 40-dollar breakfast. Do Village Pantry down the road instead. read more

I would call this more of a restaurant than a cafe. It was huge and insanely busy. I'm pretty sure it is the place to go after church so keep that in mind if you're going for Sunday brunch. The service was friendly, but slow because they were packed. I was surprised by how clean they kept it with all the people in there. I purchased a cafe mocha, which was incredible. It was slightly sweet, but not too much. Beware of you don't like cream though because there was a good inch of it on top. Got the creme brûlée french toast, which was so good and filling. Overall, great experience! Michael our polite & helpful server was on the money showing up when we needed him and leaving us be when not. The drink list was broad enough without trying to be a bar and the food was fantastic. We had the Greek salad and Spaghettini Agliata (Basil pesto made with Gorgonzola and Parmesan cheeses, aged balsamic, and toasted pecans) and didn't leave anything on our plates. Uptown is a nice upscale restaurant. My wife and I enjoy a number of items on the menu. My favorite is the meatloaf, but the pepper chicken, and hoosier style gumbo is also very good. They have nightly specials that sound very tasty, but they are typically quite a bit more. Parking can be a nightmare. Be prepared to circle the block a few times or walk a block or two.
