This place is really cute with all its decor! I can't believe I've never been here despite living in tally my whole life. My family and I finally came here for Mother's Day and surprisingly the wait was only 5 mins long. I think it's because we came super early. The only downside to this place I'd say is the coffee wasn't as strong as me and my mom like it. But my dad loved it lol. We all ordered different items and wow the portions were big! We could have shared some plates for sure. I love how affordable this place is as well. I see why it's a staple in Tallahassee. Everything was delicious and made fresh! We ate breakfast here, and it was fantastic. Lots and lots of employees! And the owner was making the rounds - seemed like a very genuine and very nice guy. I had a concoction called "mancakes" - three breakfast meats (bacon, sausage, & ham... all high quality btw) cooked into an XXL sized pancake, topped with a couple eggs. It was delicious. My wife had some sort of spinach-egg-salmon-provolone creation which she rated very highly, and my daughter had banana bread French toast which she likewise found delicious. I was excited to grab my lunch at Uptown Cafe because I read so many positive reviews on Yelp. What happened??? I ordered the cashier's recommendation, which was the "Option" sandwich. I did not care for the bread selection chosen for the sandwich, so I asked if I could switch to another type of bread. I was told I could, but it would cost extra. I ordered the sandwich on the bread of my choice, which was the multi-grain ciabatta. I was surprised that for a sandwich that comes with nothing on the side, I was charged over $9. To make the meal a "combo" (which includes a small drink and a bag of chips), they charge an additional $2.85. For dessert, I also ordered the cashier's recommendation which sounded delicious - a chocolate chip/butterscotch chip/peanut butter chip cookie. I "tried" to eat my sandwich, but between the sogginess of the bread that was drenched in a mixture of liquid and grease, I took one bite and immediately discarded the entire sandwich. To me, it was simply inedible. Famished, I looked forward to dessert. Sadly, that was all wrong too! Instead of the cookie she recommended, she gave me a cookie that was nothing like she described. It tasted like a spice clove. There were no chocolate, butterscotch chips, or peanut butter chips in the cookie. I tossed the cookie too! I had to leave and eat at another establishment. Obviously I will NOT be returning to this place. After reviewing the yelp reviews further, it is evident they are more popular for their breakfast than lunch. read more

I can't count the number of times I've been to Uptown Cafe. It is the go-to breakfast joint for my wife and me. In fact, whenever we have company in from out of town, we bring them here because the food and service is reliably top-notch. If you are a bacon fan, their bacon is always dark and crispy but never burnt. Their salmon is to die for as it's perfectly flavored and smoked. They have creative options such as Pancakes with bacon cooked in, a unique take on the Cuban, and amazing blackened chicken hash. Oh, check out their home-made corned beef hash or their banana French toast! Uptown Cafe's menu is rather lengthy, containing breakfast and lunch fare, and is served all day. It's a breeze to request unique combinations such as their turkey wrap combined with bacon and scrambled eggs. They do it with a smile! The staff seem to enjoy working there as well, which says a lot about the place. We've never had poor service. Service was kind, but sparse and they seemed a bit overwhelmed (tables not cleared, sat for awhile waiting for a menu). I got the unsweetened ice tea, very good and kind of minty. I have eaten here a few times and ordered the side house smoked salmon and I ordered it to go today and have to say I'm really disappointed at the portion amount. It feels like HALF of what I got last time( also take out same size container) put a lime for scale. It's good and I realize hard work goes into it but for 4.25$ for a side I expect more than this measly serving Also ordered turkey avocado wrap and put onions on it very tasty. Definitely one of the best brunch places I've been to! Parking is very limited in the parking lot next to the building but there is an extra lot a few blocks away or you could opt for local street parking. This family run business has a lot of character with all of the different dining areas and makes you feel like you're coming over to a friend's house for breakfast. It's a little hard to navigate to the back where the receptionist is but you can tell that the place is good if it's that busy. The wait time for a Sunday brunch is about 30-40 minutes but goes by pretty fast, in my opinion. If weather permits, I'd suggest sitting on the patio where there's plenty of space and less noise. The menu may seem overwhelming at first but it's divided into sections dependent on what kind of food mood you're in. I heard that their specialty is the homemade smoked salmon so of course we ordered the smoked salmon omelet. For something more filling, I chose the Nic's grit bowl and our waiter suggested the banana bread French toast to share around the table. The food took about 15 minutes to come out and it was piping hot. The Salmon Omelette is for those who want something light for breakfast but it's bursting with such aromatic flavors from the cured salmon that's perfectly smokey, sweet, and salty with the fluffy egg and spinach omelette. The Nic's grit bowl was delicious!! Every bite you take is well/balanced with the sautéed veggies, ham, egg, and cheesy grits. As a "dessert", the banana bread French toast comes with 3 large pieces dusted with powdered sugar. You could drizzle it with maple syrup but I preferred it without since it was already moist and sweet on it's own. I'd recommend this to anyone visiting Tallahassee and would love to come back here the next time I visit! read more

OMG, we live like 5 minutes away from here and still did not check out this breakfast/brunch joint for so long? We went there to have Sunday brunch on a chilly winter morning, and was pleasantly surprised. There was a little bit of wait. Unlike other breakfast places, the waiting area was indoors and there was some coffee. They should have standard cups instead of cheap paper cups though! Food options were amazing and slightly different from the other joints in town. Their salmon dishes are especially good since they bake them in-house. Their bread comes mostly from Tasty Pastry, so another reason to try out various breads/toasts. We ordered a salmon, grits with eggs bowl and a salmon omelette. Both were delectable. I got a biscuit as a side and that was not that great though. Service and reception was impeccable. The owner, Fred came up to the tables and asked about the experience. We even got into a long conversation about environment and science along with travel experiences. Such a pleasant person. AMAZING!!! We are in town for a wedding and found Uptown Cafe on Yelp. Oh my goodness! Everything was amazing! I had the smoked salmon salad. The salmon is smoked over fruitwood and finished off with an apricot glaze. The waiter recommended and I was so happy I tried! My husband had the Uptown. He said hands down it was the best sandwich he has ever had! The owner recommended the 805 beer from a local brewery! He loved it! Our son had the French toast...Delicious! Actually everyone Loved their meals! There were 7 of us in total and we were easily accommodated. After the meal, Fred, the owner came out and told us all about the family recipes and how they smoke the salmon. He was so welcoming and friendly. Our server was very attentive. My daughter has attended FSU over the past few years, and we have visited Uptown Cafe every time we've been in town to see her. It has been consistently solid, with excellent food, friendly service, and reasonable prices. Homemade corned beef and smoked salmon are particularly noteworthy. The only knock is the space is a bit tired, plain, and a little disjointed. If they renovated it and joined the three separate rooms into a single, updated space, it would get 5 stars. Second visit to Uptown. Had gone 3 years ago and was not impressed, but recently saw a number of positive recommendations so wanted to try again. Second visit was not any better, except we had a very good server. Food is just mediocre, ordered the corned beef sandwich as it was listed as a specialty and was really not great, very little meat and too greasy. Also feel like for what you get it is over priced. My coffee was cool and a little bitter, granted we went at 11:30 and half our party wanted breakfast. Server was very sweet, but it took quite a long while for our food to come out and it was not super busy? My son did enjoy the biscuits and hash. Probably the biggest problem is that it feels very dirty. Outside and inside they need a good cleanup and refresh. read more

Just wanted to drop a quick rave about the great service I received at Uptown today. Even with a packed out house on Saturday morning (game day might I add) we were treated so well. We interacted with three other employees before seeing the hostess. All of these employees offered "good mornings" and "how are yous" that were genuine and calm even under the stress of a slammed and busy breakfast rush. I felt very at home. We were seated within three minutes and guided by a beautiful display of the days special which was described in detail to us. It was some sort of loaded grit bowl which looked filling and phenomenal. I would have gotten it had I had more of an appetite and a bit more money to blow! We were then continually checked on by our waitress and a manager who was more than kind. The food is a bit pricy, so I went with the uptown special, a little bit of everything for $6.95. The atmosphere is quirky and welcoming, as the building goes from outside seating, to indoor, to diner style, to outdoor, to indoor again. You'll understand that if you go on a busy day. Very strange, but large and accommodating to all kinds of guests, which is how they are able to serve so many on a morning like today! High praise for good service! read more

My personal favorite is the Chef Salad, which is basically eating a deconstructed sandwich. Bill always comes out to less than $20 for two, even with the higher prices items. For breakfast they've got delicious omelets but I also like their simple 'Back to Basics' plate of eggs, tomato, and avocado. Their menu might look simple but there's something for everyone here. Our favorite breakfast place! Nice variety of breakfast dishes and lunch sandwiches to satisfy your internal clock. The cheese grits are usually perfect in texture and taste (no watery grits here), their pancakes are the size of dinner plates, and there is always a wide variety of on-site baked goods. If you are there when they are serving up one of their "specials", take the plunge! They are creative and very tasty. If you like omelets you will find Uptown's fluffy and stuffed with the ingredients you wanted. Today I had their "You Chews It", a build your own breakfast sandwich, which I had with scrambled egg whites and bacon. My wife had her favorite Eggxotica sandwich, the Uptown's special egg salad. After eating we sat awhile drinking decaf and reading the paper. A great way to spend a lazy morning. You'll also find the friendliest staff in town waiting to serve you exactly what you're hungry for. The only negative to Uptown Cafe is its parking. The lot is small but they have arranged overflow parking across the street so don't give up if the parking looks crowded, there are plenty of seats inside. You should also note that Uptown smokes their own salmon (they don't grow their own salmon) which you can have with your meal or buy to take home or ship directly to friends/family. It's one of our party-favorites! All in all, Uptown is a wonderful place for breakfast or lunch. Enjoy! read more

Uptown cafe is the cutest little breakfast in Tallahassee. It reminds me of an old diner from a movie. The food is also all amazing! I got the pick your own bowl and got potatoes instead of grits. Everything in the bowl was fresh, and tasted so real and homemade!
