I was pleasantly surprised by this place. I went here once and loved it, but later wasn't sure how much I could trust drunk me's opinions on food she ate at 4am after a night out. So I went back on Saturday morning to try it again and it lived up to the self made hype. It was busy, but we only had to wait 5-10 min for a table and the service was great. Our family has frequented this establishment for years. It has been our go to restaurant for breakfast primarily because breakfast is served all day and their portions were very generous. The omeletes were literally the size of the plate they were served on. I could bring this home and it would be at least two more meals. I visited this past weekend (2-20)and was disappointed to discover that the mammoth omelet is now the size of my fairly small hand. Hardly worth the price they charge. I came here for some late night munchies after a night out. This isn't just your mom and pop diner, it's actually a trendy place! Nice ambience and cute décor. I ordered the steak and eggs combo. It came with toast and hash browns. So, toast in general is nothing exciting, but this was some good quality toast- probably my favorite thing on the plate. It wasn't your average wheat toast. Hash browns were nice and crispy. The steak was okay, but could've used a little more seasoning. The food my friends ordered looked amaze. I tried a piece of pancake and it was wonderfully fluffy. The Uptown Diner is owned by the same people that own the Grandview Grill in St. Paul, which happens to be in our neighborhood. The two are extremely similar -- I think the menu is identical, actually. But the Uptown Diner is bigger and open 24/7. It's nice since my personal vision of a diner is a place that serves breakfast all day and is open round the clock. One of my personal gripes about the Grandview is that they have a sign out front advertising "breakfast all day" but they close at like 2 p.m. But this isn't a review of the Grandview... We stopped in for a late-night bite and found the Uptown Diner to be pretty serviceable. I ordered eggs, french toast and bacon. The eggs were poached medium, which was OK, though a bit over for my personal runny-yolk-liking self. But there still was some runny yolk in there, so it was a decent poached egg. The bacon was kind of blah -- thin, almost burnt around the edges and a lot of fat and not so much meat. It kind of felt like bacon that had been cooked on a grill that was too hot. Still delicious because hello, it was bacon but not really awesome bacon. The best thing on my plate was the french toast, which was delightfully eggy but grilled so it had a bit of a crunch around the edges. Truly tasty. It's not the best breakfast in the area, but it certainly will satisfy your craving when you've got one. Our server was good -- generally totally fine. Prompt and fast, refills without asking. Pet peeve, they brought three plates to the table at once and mine afterwards, which led to that awkward situation where everyone is staring at their food and trying to be polite by waiting while their food gets cold. Hit this place a little after noon on a Wednesday and thought it a pretty nice entry in the diner sweepstakes. Looks like a diner and serves food like a diner..so what's not to like. Two of us had breakfast and one had lunch...all were good. One breakfast was simply eggs and sausage...eggs done right, cheap sausage just ok but nothing special, pumpernickel toast very good, and fresh squeezed OJ just that and very nice. The other breakfast was eggs and steak...eggs done right and the steak the stand out as it was tender and cooked perfectly and had no gristle or fat. Both of us had the hash browns which were disappointing as they were so soft and mushy...could have been cooked just a bit longer. Coffee was also a standout...started out strong as it was our first of the day but as we woke up it was just perfect. The other meal was chicken tenders...the tenders were the cheap thin frozen kind that were just ok. It was chicken but just barely...they certainly weren't chicken strips. The waffle fries on the other hand were a winner...crispy on the outside and meaty on the inside and plentiful. So this meal was both good and bad. All in all this was a good visit. Breakfast food was crap but we weren't too picky because we needed to stuff our pie holes to subdue the oncoming pick up truck with the license plate "Hangover." We tipped big because a) we couldn't count after 6 shots of tequila b) the little sobriety that we had fed our conscience...we felt sorry for the servers who had to serve drunk jerks...like us. I wish we had this place back in the day. You can split the $10 dollar omelets, they are huge! Also, the late night breakfast food is actually....really good. Although, I'd avoid the huevos rancheros, which is an add on to their main menu. It's pretty bad. The beans have no flavor and they resemble black re-fried beans from a can...yuck! I've been here a couple of times. This time gets a review because I was sober so I was in the right state of mind (aka not coming here after bar close on a Saturday night.) We came on a Saturday afternoon around lunch time. It was packed but our wait for 2 people was just a few minutes. The menu has a pretty good amount of variety and a little more "funky" than your average breakfast joint with some unique items. I ordered the Veggie Egg White Scrambler (trying to watch my figure before going on vacation) but then I counteracted that with a single Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Pancake. My boyfriend ordered the Cajun Breakfast. My scrambler had a nice mix of veggies which was refreshing in my opinion. To be honest, it was something I could've made at home with less oil. But it was good nonetheless. The pancake was awesome and satisfied my sweet tooth. It was more just a chocolate chip pancake in my opinion but I had some bites with cookie dough taste. It was very sweet though. A dessert pancake if there is such a thing. My boyfriend was dying over his meal. He was a big fan of their hollandaise sauce and there was a lot of food (he had to pack leftovers). He had only good things to say about it. The food was good and I would go back to explore more of the menu. However, the price is a little over what I think would be reasonable. I paid $26 plus tip for our meal. I went here for brunch with a friend on a Wednesday around 11 and there were many tables available. The server was very friendly and helpful. This place has a 1970 diner feel with the big booths and chairs. I got the kamikaze French toast and my friend got the pineapple upside down pancakes. The French toast was delicious. Fresh fruit with breakfast doesn't make you feel as guilty when you pour on the maple syrup. My friend had a couple bites of the pineapple upside down pancakes but didn't like it. I tried it and it was okay, but liked my choice more. She told the waitress and then got cookie dough pancakes. Those were very good (if you have a sweet tooth). I used to come here after a long night of partying and can speak to a solid current a hangover, but now that I'm old, it's just regular breakfast ;) The Cajun is my favorite!
