My experience with Uptown Diner was pretty dang good! I went at about midnight with some friends, so props to them for dealing with 7 young college students! They were very nice, even when my clumsy friend knocked over a bottle and it broke. (I offered to pay for it but they said it was okay). And they had no problems splitting the checks, which is important when we all pay separate. Thank you for being kind to us, we get lots of dirty looks when we go elsewhere, even if we aren't loud at all. The food was really,really good. I had the Caramel Apple Cinnamon Waffle and shared a Cookies and Cream shake. They were both big portions and really tasty. I walked in, wasn't sure if I was supposed to seat myself or I had to wait to be seated, but I figured it out. I think it was the manager that had talked to me and asked me if I wanted coffee right away, she honestly was soooo nice! The service was amazing. I had to wait for my friend to arrive to order and they were totally okay with that, but as soon as my friend she was super responsive and took our order right then! The food was really good, but it's a very sweet breakfast, we both had a sugary waffle or a sweet pancake. Order something less sweet if you want a great healthy breakfast if not I recommend the waffle I got mine without the granola, cause I hate pecans. The coffee is awesome!! I add two half&halfs and one sugar packet and it's legit perfect. The fried are a must, best waffle fries I've ever had. This place usually rocks, but this morning was a lot different than the norm. First off, table was covered with syrup, easy enough fix, wipe it down..no problem..service was the only bright spot...food came quick, then we noticed our silverware was dirty, then it really went downhill. The hash browns, which are usually spot on,tasted like they were fried in rancid oil. My wife's eggs were way undercooked for over easy, my Cajun breakfast was barely edible due to the nasty hash browns.....but, just like always....the toast was rocking....So for a $42 dollar breakfast for 2, we had very expensive toast...... Uptown Diner is, as other have noted, perfect for that early morning hangover-prevention meal. The waffle fries will taste like heaven after a chilly stroll from wherever you've been drinking (or not.) Plus, you'll get some wonderful people watching in if you're there late on a weekend. Waffle fries + Turkey Club = heavenly, at 2am. The farmer's breakfast and all the pancakes also seem like solid choices, though I haven't personally indulged. It's also great for that pick me up/comfort dinner when you just want to sit and read a YA novel and have no one judge you for eating a burger, fries, and malt (for ~$10 with their special). This combo makes me wonder why anyone would choose 5 Guys over this but anyway...I would firmly say this establishment does not belong on anyone's bougie brunch spots list; but maybe it belongs on the "it's too early to be alive right now but I'm up and eating because I have to go to the airport or have a big test" or something type of list. In other words, Uptown Diner is pretty much every greasy spoon diner I've ever been to -- cheapish, classic American lunch and dinner type foods in a vaguely nostalgic and not-so-pristine setting. Frankly, any place that has an extensive menu solely focusing on breakfast has captured my heart. There is no right time or place for breakfast, and Uptown Diner is just the place at 10 pm when you're craving breakfast bites. I went with my boyfriend, and together, we ordered the Country Steak and Eggs and the Catfish Breakfast to try. The portion sizes are huge, and I brought home at least half of one dish. The catfish was cooked to perfection, and tasted refreshing compared to the heavy sausage gravy caked steak and eggs. That sausage gravy probably was terrible for my health, but I'm more than okay with that. The food isn't anything mind-blowing, but it's just comforting breakfast diner food. Came here for breakfast on a Sunday of a long weekend. As expected there was a bit of a wait. This was discouraging because we had called ahead they said that we could be seated right away. Ten minute wait - okay, no problem. Well it was more like half an hour and they seated people with larger parties that came in after us before us. In fact they told everyone that came in that it would be ten minutes. Mostly I think they just have no idea and this is their standard answer. We were only seated once we pointed out to them that they were saving tables to seat the large parties and they were getting seated quickly while we (table for three) continued to wait indefinitely. The Uptown Diner provides the vittles to soak up a hangover, whether you're just leaving the bar or find yourself woozy-boozy when you wake up the next morning. That's what you come here for and that's what you get---no more and no less. It's quick, the portions are enormous and you will drunkenly befriend people at tables nearby. The menu isn't the made-from-scratch kind. It is, however, full of hangover desirables all for around $10: gyro omelets, breakfast burritos, scrambles smothered in cheese, biscuits and gravy, steak phillys, burgers, chicken strips, grilled cheeses, chocolate chip cookie dough pancakes, etc. You can also get a malt, if the mood strikes. I got the carnitas benedict, because I order everything that has the word carnitas in it. It comes on a biscuit rather than an English muffin, with hollandaise, refried beans, poached eggs and hash browns. The benedict was tasty, but if you like your hash browns crispy, order them that way specifically. Mine were a bit under-browned. I hadn't been here in years, but I was happily surprised by the fast service and the fact that the food was quite edible. I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to eat it by daylight, but, as someone who had just shared two pitchers of beer with her boyfriend, I devoured my 2 a.m. carnitas benedict like a beast. P.S. YUM. A friend brought me here saying that she loved it. I ordered the pineapple upside down pancakes. It came with two pancakes and came out to be about 10 bucks. The pancakes came with cinnamon butter on top, which was a delicious addition. Each pancake was very moist and slowly melted in your mouth. These pancakes were so huge. I've enjoyed breakfast here on numerous occasions over the years. The half-Cajun Breakfast with a side of Andouille was an old favorite. However, the last several times have been major disappointments. Are my memories of it having been better in the past accurate? Or has it always been meh and I was just paying more attention to the people I was with than the food? Let's start with the coffee. It's inexcusable for a breakfast place to serve such watery, flavorless swill. The pancakes? I found them just average in texture and taste at best. I also understandd why they use the term Kamikaze "style." When they arrived there were few blueberries, fresh bananas and pecans to be found. Apparently they are to be imagined as "in the style of" pancakes that actually contain adequate amounts of said ingredients. The accompanying sausage links left an unpleasant, slightly acrid aftertaste. More recently my Farmers Breakfast was a nearly inedible pile of undercooked hash browns and onions, swimming in grease and oily cheese atop a serving of overcooked scrambled eggs. Finally, the service. On my last visit (and it will be my last) I had a truly bizarre experience. I walked in fairly early on a Saturday morning well before the typical crush. The sign said I should seat myself which I did. I waited for a quite a while, observing several parties who arrived after me be served coffee and have their orders taken. No huge deal. I wasn't in a hurry and I just kept reading my newspaper. However, when I saw food arriving at one of those tables I finally flagged down a rushing server who looked annoyed. I said that I was ready to order and he said that it wasn't his section. I asked if he would please alert my section's server. He nodded and rushed off. Somewhat later a different server came by. She informed me in an officious manner that I shouldn't have been given a table until my full party had arrived. I explained that I was alone and the sign said that I should seat myself when I walked in. She looked at me as though I were trying to run some kind of a scam but did take my order. She brought over a cup of coffee and tableware. I left momentarily to wash my hands. When I returned I found three others seated at my table, my coffee and newspaper gone. By now there was also a crowd of people waiting in the front. I ended up getting the last seat at the counter but not before having to explain what happened so that my order could be rerouted. BTW, I hadn't planned to hog a table with my newspaper while others waited. Had I been served as soon as I sat down, I would have finished breakfast and been gone before the stampede. Besides the muffins, everything else is pretty standard... and yes, "Perkins-like." But the prices are dec(ent), so what do you expect? We arrived at 11:30 on a Saturday- no spaces left in the parking lot and the waiting area was jam packed. When the hostess said it would 20 minutes for our party of 3- we didn't believe her, but decided to wait it out anyway. Sure enough- we were sat in under 20 minutes. My friend and I immediately ordered a caramel pecan roll to share. We had been salivating over them while waiting for our table. It was just as I imagined it would be--warm, gooey and oh so delicious. Our waitress was fantastic- she was friendly and joked around with us. The coffee at Uptown Diner is really good-a Morning Star organic, fair trade blend. Some of the best coffee I've had in a restaurant- let alone somewhere with "diner" in the name. I had the Farmer's Breakfast- hash browns, onions, eggs and cheese. It had way more hash browns than I was expecting. My friend and I easily could have shared it even if we hadn't already split the pecan roll. It was tasty in that "I'm about to have a heart attack and I don't care" sort of way. They have some healthier options on the menu incase you do care. My friend asked for a take out box but then changed her mind. She apologized to the waitress for having her bring the box over. A friend of mine was in from New York, so I felt this incredible need to impress. As we were in Uptown, I thought the Uptown Diner would probably do. I was not disappointed in the least. It was quiet the day that we were there. The service was excellent, we were very well attended to. Our drinks were filled regularly and we were checked on "just enough" - not too little, not overbearing. I got the Gyro omelette and my guest got the crab and hollandaise extravaganza. The menu had such a wonderful variety of all different sorts of combinations, it was hard to decide! My meal was exceptional. We were served so quickly I was expecting it to taste like it was microwaved. Certainly NOT the case! It was fresh and hot. My guest and I didn't really talk for a few minutes because we were busy inhaling our food. I recently took my aged parents to this restaurant for brunch. Usually my experience with this restaurant is at 3 in the morning, when everything else is closed, or on a Saturday afternoon, when I just woke up and need a hangover cure. My parents were in for a treat... Around 1 pm on a Sunday, my parents and I strolled in for a late brunch-ish meal. The place was still packed, and we had to wait for about 20 minutes (fast turn around here). Most people at the Diner were in their young 20's, 30 year old yuppies, or cops. The Uptown Diner is the younger version of Perkins for Minneapolis. My mom and I both ordered the farmer's breakfast. Its a giant plate of hash browns smothered in cheddar cheese and eggs, with a side of toast. My dad ordered something similar which included vegetables and spice, but without cheese. The hash browns here are incredible. Most breakfast joints I seem to be going to consider hash browns to be large chunks of potatoes slathered in grease and herbs. The uptown diner creates a classic dish: stringy potatoes, browned to perfection with just the right amount of grease and salt. My parents were deeply concerned by the amount of food they received for their meal. "Do you think someone can really eat this much" and "Can you imagine what someone would look like if they ate here everyday" were the comments my parents made throughout eating here. I was so excited to go here! My friend told me the hash browns are soooo good - Crispy and you get a ton. I am very picky about my hash browns, and the thought of finally getting some decent ones in the area just delighted me. We were seated promptly. The server was friendly but overwhelmed- only took a minute to get drinks but at least 10 minutes for straws. Food arrived about the time the straws did - which I knew from working in the industry was way too fast for the hash browns to actually have any crunch to them. When I saw my plate, my fear was confirmed - blame the "build up" with all the recommendations I'd seen here, and my friend's solemn vow of awesomeness, but my meal was all but ruined. I will say the chicken fried steak was good, as was the gravy, and I wasn't even that bothered that my eggs were closer to over medium than over easy - but that sad pile of brown mush that wanted to be hash browns was simply awful. In summary, please don't print "crispy" in the description on the menu and not deliver. Those of us who love genuine "crispy" hash browns have a difficult enough time finding them - don't toy with our emotions. I'm sure I'll go back, because Minneapolis is lacking places to eat late. My fella and I both work Saturday nights bar-tending and sometimes we just don't want Taco Bell or Wendy's. I'll be sure to avoid the hash browns though. read more

He told us the breakfast was excellent and the portions were huge and he was absolutely right. I loved it. It was pretty packed as it was a Saturday morning, but the wait wasn't too bad. We were seated in about 20 minutes. One thing I observed if that they won't seat your party if the entire party isn't present, just an FYI. They have a nice funky menu, but I'm a really simple breakfast girl so I just ordered eggs, bacon and pancakes. The pancakes were excellently fluffy. My relationship with Uptown Diner is like one of those love-hate types. I tend to come here after a late night out and other places are either closed or knee deep with long lines. Yesterday was one of those nights after attending the Cat Video Festival at Walker Art Center. I came here and got the cheeseburger, fries and malt deal while my boy got the Minnesota. My experience ended up exactly just like the many previous experiences I had. First, it was "this is so good, the best thing i ever had". Next, after couple bites in and few fries the marginal return diminishes. By three-quarters in, I throw in the flag and surrender to the grease, then commit to self-loathing and hate. The burger, which i had with pepperjack cheese (you can select from several including cheddar, american, swiss), was a solid standard burger. I'm always meh about waffle fries -- they seem like they were fried for a while as mine were bit soft. I love their malts here though. I got the pineapple (they have standard vanilla, strawberry, chocolate, cookies n cream, mango and blueberry too) and it still had chunks of fruit in it which I actually prefer (reminds me that maybe I am drinking something real and not processed a billion times). Overall, solid post-festival meal that left me feeling way too full. My boyfriend had the Minnesota which was like a huge folded egg omelette with cheese and stuffed with mushrooms and some sausage pieces? His was way way way too greasy and we both could not finish it. He also had side of hash brown and toast. Overall, this was a quantity over quality meal. However, like most of my previous times, I came in here with somewhat lower expectations, which it met. Service here is probably my biggest annoyance. I understand there are craploads of people at night but getting their attention requires me to fake dropping dead in front of them. I almost always ask for the bill around the time i get my food just so I don't have to try to flag them down. And almost always, I ask for something e.g., mayo, and they would take about 15 minutes to respond...by which i rather eat my sandwich or burger without. Overall, sadly I will probably return given it opens 24h on the weekends and Rowena at 2am just want something in her belly that isn't McDonalds. However, I probably would never eat here in regular daytime hours given the other places around Uptown with bit better standards (and less grease!...forreal amount of grease left over on your plate can grease the hair of whole cast of 'Grease'). read more

The Uptown Diner was a place I was hoping to visit awhile ago, but I finally got the chance to visit recently and I picked the perfect day/time to do so. I love going to diners at any time of day...breakfast, lunch, dinner...you name it. But going to the Uptown Diner after bar close was such a good idea. I'm not even being sarcastic (if you knew me, you'd say I'm one of the most sarcastic people you'd ever meet). I felt that their service and dishes rocked. The place was full of drunk people trying to prevent morning hangovers by eating food with high fat and sodium content, and that made the atmosphere even better. I went with my boyfriend and one of his friends and we were seated right away. This was a pleasant surprise to me being that it looked like there were barely any seats available at the time. My boyfriend got the Cajun Breakfast ($10.50), his friend got the Classic Eggs Benedict ($10.25) and I got the Steak & Eggs ($14.95). We all loved our dishes. We are all starving and sleepy from being up late, but this late night meal was so satiating. I inhaled my steak and eggs (I'm a little person, so for me to inhale an entire steak is a big task). I wanted my steak "well done" and that it was. It wasn't too tough or burnt at all. It was perfect. I wanted another one when I finished it. The eggs were fine, nothing to mention. They tasted like eggs, so thumbs up for that. The hash browns had a slight bitter taste to them, so they may have been a tiny bit burnt, but I still thought it was very good. Crispy and golden. The boys kept saying how good their dishes were, and we ate mostly in silence because we all were focused on eating. That's a good sign. The one thing I did not like about my dish was the fruit. I do not like toast, so as a substitute, I chose fruit. Not doing that again. My boyfriend said he liked the pineapple, but he could tell it was canned. I agreed. I don't usually like canned fruits due to the high syrup content, so I decided to only eat my grapes. The fruit was not fresh and I'd recommend getting a different side or just sticking with the toast that usually comes with the dish. Our waitress was wonderful. She made sure to check back on us and ask how our food was. It didn't take long for our food to arrive either. Once again, this was unexpected due to the amount of customers in the place. I understood that the steak took a little longer to make, but they got the food out to us promptly. No lines or waiting? No rude waiters? No undercooked food? You best believe I'm coming back to this diner again! Maybe I'll have to try it at a different meal time that's actually a meal time next time. I've been here a few times before but those times I can't say I was in the right mindset to remember what I was eating or how good it was. So this morning was a good test because I was neither hung over or drunk, which happened to be the case the last couple of times. But like Alison mentioned in her review the Cajun Breakfast is delightful. I split it and it was still quite a bit of food so I'm not sure if they up it just a little bit before the split or if that truly is how large it was. I also was pretty hungry and didn't think a breakfast cut in half was going to be enough food so I also ordered a short stack to go along with it. And again that alone could have been enough to satisfy my hunger. Madness I tell you, madness. But it was very good and very quick, so I know I will enjoy it regardless of my current alcohol related situation. read more

Uptown Diner has provided me with many late-night burger deals and breakfast pancakes over my visits. First things first, you can't beat their $9 burger, fries, malt deal. Normally, if you bought these things separately, they would amount to some ridiculous price. But if you go Thurs-Sun from 3PM-10PM, all of these can be yours for one small payment of $9.00. The only problem (if you can call it a problem) is that there is so much food that it can be difficult to finish. (Note: you may also want to go for a walk after consuming this large quantity of grease and sweets.) Also note: their pancakes are also delicious and very, very large. The service is always good, though I don't think it's ever been too busy when I've been there. Regardless, the servers have always been friendly and kind. Friday and Saturday they're open 24 hours. I'm sure it gets pretty rowdy in there around bar close...probably would make for an enjoyable people-watching experience. The food is absolutely delicious and their coffee is great. The eggs Benedict is probably the best I ever had. They don't skimp you on hollandaise sauce. The hash browns are always cooked to perfection. I wish I could give it 5 stars but the staff isn't overly friendly. Mainly the hosting staff. My boyfriend and I came in for breakfast one Saturday morning and the host wouldn't even give us any eye contact. We were looked at strangely by staff because we were dressed pretty nice (I was wearing a dress, he was wearing khakis). This was because we just came from Shabbat services from temple Israel nearby. "Hipster" isn't our style but that doesn't mean we are less worthy of good service. Our waitress was really nice. I can't remember her name but she had blonde hair and was super sweet. I wanted to love you, Uptown Diner. I really did. Sure, you resemble a Perkins in some ways. Your staff is kind and fairly friendly for people who must suffer crazy rushes of customers, as you did on New Year's Day morning. Sure, I only agreed to come to you because you happened to be the only place that I knew was open... But Uptown Diner. What the hell was that omelette? It wasn't HORRIBLE. It wasn't inedible. But it certainly wasn't good. Maybe I just built you up in my head so much that you never would have been able to live up to my unrealistic expectations, but omelettes are not difficult no matter how busy you are. Perhaps my disappointment came from the 30 minute wait (which I am sure is in NO WAY typical. This was probably one of the busiest days of the year for you, so I'm not holding it against you at all.). It was just that after such a long wait, I was expecting tastier food. Your coffee was good, though. NIce and tar-like. And the toast was not overly buttery, which is a plus. Maybe someday I will come see you again and you can make it up to me. I'd give this place five stars... or three... but I'm not sure I've ever been sober when I've been here, so one could say my memory is a little "hazy". If you've drank too much and you're worried about waking up in a pool of vomit, this is where you need to be. The service is effective and the portions are friggin huge. I'm assuming they have breakfast all day, because I've never had a sandwich here and I've never been here during daylight. So ultimately...
