The food was absolutely great! They have a diverse menu and are relatively well priced compared to other locations of their caliber. An amazingly welcoming environment as well. My steak sandwich was perfectly made by Alyssa, and Benji made some very pleasant conversation with me while i waited for my food. I've eaten at Urban Plates several times now, including opening night, and it was immediately clear they were off to a great start. There was a gentleman who appeared to be the owner or manager, in a chef's uniform, greeting guests at the door with a smile, a handshake, and a few friendly pointers about the space--an excellent first impression. The restaurant itself is clean, spacious, and can get busy during peak hours, which speaks to its popularity. I've tried the Beef and Mushroom Stew multiple times, the Chopped Turkey salad, Chicken Cobb, and Ahi Tuna Niçoise, and everything has been consistently excellent--no weak spots so far. We liked it so much that we ordered our Thanksgiving holiday meal from them (turkey breast and several sides), and it was exceptionally well executed. The reheating instructions were clear and thoughtful, the food wasn't over-seasoned, and it was noticeably better than comparable holiday meals I've had from other local spots. For the money, Urban Plates is one of the best places to eat in Davis right now, especially for salads--it's a breath of fresh air to have consistently good execution and customer service. When everything is done this well, it looks easy, but it really highlights how rare that combination is elsewhere. The only knock I've noticed is that certain menu items (notably steak) can sometimes take much longer than others to come out; I've seen this with my own party and with others, occasionally requiring people to ask for a status update. To their credit, they usually handle it well and can offer a small make-good. Overall, though, Urban Plates is a fantastic addition to Davis, and I highly recommend giving it a try if you haven't already. You order right as you walk in on the screens, which is odd because if someone comes up right behind you, you feel the pressure to pick something quickly and go to a table...there should be another option, maybe order from the phone at your table? I get it, every business is trying to reduce labor costs. If I could give it no stars I would, we ordered 3 meals for delivery, and they were all awful, cold soggy and almost unbeatable, we waited a hour for the food to turn up, and we live in town, I ordered a steak sandwich and all I got was a little steak on a cold stale bread, the fries were colder then it was outside. The food is good and there are lots of options. The service still needs some tweaking. I've eaten here three times and consistently the waiters are overbearing with trying to clear plates. I was still eating my food yesterday when two separate servers asked to clear my plate when I still had food on my plate and in my mouth. I think over the course of a 60 min meal the servers came to ask if they could clear plates almost 15 times. It got fairly annoying trying to enjoy my meal and friend. Secondly, the food came out at varying times with a salad coming out last trailing the main course by 10 mins. Even in a casual place, consider timing. Food shouldn't come out in courses but no one wants to eat their salad last. These are customer service issues that will make the dining experience much more enjoyable. read more

Spacious, modern and clean restaurant; like a hybrid food hall. The beef stew had decent flavor, a bit salty, but came in a paltry portion, mostly sauce with 2 large mushrooms and small dry chewy beef chunks, and a small thin slide of toast, too small to dip all the sauce. It was a cheap imitation of Austrian goulash. The "truffle fries" were just normal steak fries with a plastic cup of truffle cream, and arrived well after I finished the beef stew in about 7 spoonfuls. Overall, decent flavor, inadequate quality and portion size, overpriced poor value. Don't expect quality and value of an established mid-tier sit-down restaurant. read more

First I would like to say the service and staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. The restaurant is not big but we were able to find seating, the decor or the restaurant is very modern which you could either wait to order at the register or use a kiosk by the front door. We were there on Thanksgiving so we both had the Turkey plate, which features the juiciest herb roasted turkey I have ever tasted. We got the mashed potatoes with gravy and mushroom stuffing as our 2 sides. Both were delicious but my only gripe would be the little amount of gravy we received, 3 bites of the mashed potatoes and the gravy was gone. Hopefully this will get fixed by my next visit. The rustic bread was very crispy and tasty and went well with the meal. My least favorite of the plate was the cranberries relish, it tasted so strange, and did not complement the meal. I left it on my plate as it was not enjoyable. With the drinks I was so confused with the Stubborn soda, on the menu board it just says Stubborn soda and nothing on what variety of soda they have. I had to look behind the counter to the machine to see what variety they had. The print on the machines are very small so if there were seniors I don't think they would be able to see the small print. Just put the names on the board and save everyone a headache. We both got the cola and it tasted ok, would much rather have a better tasting soda so I was not happy with my choice. I would recommend this restaurant for the younger generation as it has new tech like ordering kiosks, using apps on phones to order from the table and possible seating issues if you have mobility issues. Being this restaurant has only been open a month there is room for improvement and I will definitely have to come back and try the other items on the menu. read more

The food and service was good. However, why I will not recommend this place is because the owner of the restaurant charges you an extra 3% on your bill to help pay for their employees' medical care.
