3.5 Another weekend up in LA, this time farther north in Camarillo--land of farms, outlet malls, and that calm, beige-but-pleasant vibe. I was hungry. It was noon and I hadn't even had coffee yet. I'm trying to eat healthier even though the new year isn't here yet. I first went to a Thai place, but it was so quiet--not a creature was stirring--that I bailed and ended up at Urbane. It's in a little cluster with Baja Fresh, a ramen spot, and a bunch of other places, and it was kinda busy. Guess everyone's working off the holidays. The menu is mostly lighter sandwiches and salads. I got the keto Cobb with chicken. The lettuce was great--fresh and dry, which matters. We also tried the portobello sandwich and it was solid. The focaccia is denser than I'm used to, but it works well since it keeps everything from dripping all over the plate. Parking was easy and folks bring your stuff to your table.

Urbane Cafe is cool cafe that the company i was working for ordered lunch from. I got the Trip Tip sandwich with bacon. And it he tri tip was nice juicy and tender. Packed with tons of flavor the pepper jack cheese complimented it well and the sauce that was on it was delicious. The specialty lemonade was also delicious I got the watermelon lemonade delicious the flavors complimented each other well. The fruit was fresh and delectable.

I love love love Urbane. If for some odd reason , I forget lunch or don't meal prep - this is my go to! Great customer service . Smaller shop , like most Urbanes. A bit busy but kept clean. My go tos are Cilantro Chicken Salad and the chimichurri steak sandwich.

Sandwich sloppily put together but the salad?! Literally a few wilted pieces. So disappointing. Will not be going there again

We ordered Urbane for our Black Friday lunch. I love their portobello sandwich. My food was great! My coworkers complained about their avocado not being fresh on their sandwiches.

    It's a piece of wood!!

I don't think there's a bad seat in the house, but we always love to sit outside so that we have a really good view of the aircraft coming and going. I tried the BLT and, oh my!!! One of the best I've had, with lots of thick cut bacon, very crisp, lots of lettuce, tomato and mayo (I ordered it as-is). Half was the size of a regular sandwich so the other half went home with me! RRR ordered the triple decker club on sourdough and loved his as well. Half of his went home also. We both got the cole slaw as our side which has a little pineapple in it. I found it ok, RRR really liked it. We shared a special milkshake, pistachio, and it was heavenly, highly recommended. Service was perfect, there when needed but not overbearing. We so appreciate well-trained staff! Highly recommended.

Dear Hubby and I have been to Waypoint Cafe a few times over the years. Because of how popular…read morethey are, it's not somewhere we try to go to on a weekend. Today we had to be out of the house due to Edison maintenance in your neighborhood. We were originally headed for Ojai, but we were hungry and didn't want to wait that long to get food. I suggested Waypoint since it was a weekday and hopefully wouldn't be that crowded. We hit them just before a lunch rush came along about 30 minutes later. it's probably been a while, but their ordering procedure has changed since the last time we were there. Now you enter, go to the host stand, and order and pay there. Then they give you a number for your order and a host takes you out to a table. It's a variation on fast casual. The idea is that they will start cooking your food as soon as you pay, and the process will flow smoothly from there. They have a lot of runners bringing out the food, and offering additional condiments or other things you might need, like more water or napkins. There are several reasons that I'm downgrading the rating from a previous visit. $18 for a plain Belgian waffle? No fruit, garnish, whipped cream, just melted butter and a very small amount of syrup. It looked more substantial because we added eggs and bacon for $3 more. The latter seems like a good deal, because the eggs were well prepared. Only two slices of bacon, though. DH and I split the plate. $21 for a plain waffle, scrambled eggs, and two pieces of bacon does seem excessive. We added a side of hash browns, which were plentiful, but were also oily. I don't remember having hash browns in another restaurant which were that greasy, so that was a fail. $9 for two cups of decaf coffee? That also seemed on the high side, especially when a tiny (and I do mean tiny!) addition of oat milk for creamer was $1.50. Really? And yet, they offered mini portions of hazelnut or French vanilla creamer for free. But we didn't know that ahead of time. A large glass of lukewarm pineapple juice was $6. I had to ask for a glass of ice cubes to be able to chill the juice down to where it tasted good. By the way, the waffle was slightly overcooked for my preference, making it more crunchy than I enjoy. Overall, it was $50 for a breakfast that DH and I split, just adding the hash browns and juice to stretch the meal. Service was good. It was the kitchen that let down the team. Also, ambiance-wise, the airport has added a large row of hangars to the northwest of the restaurant, which dramatically cuts down the view of the planes taking off and landing. That's actually another fail for the appeal of dining here. It's likely going to be a while before we return. Sad to report today's experience, but that's what it turned out to be - not the lovely little secret getaway of the past.

The paella is only served on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. Three of us decided to share the shrimp tacos ($17). The dish has 3 small soft shell tacos with shrimp and tomato slivers (see photo) and a sauce - delish! Then came the paella ($55). Brought to the table in a hot skillet. Terrific presentation (see photo). Saffron rice covered with a ton of pork, chicken and sausage, a cut open cooked lime, and other goodies. WOW!!! Terrific dish. The menu describes it as feeding 2. We were 3 hungry diners and didn't come close to being able to finish it. My friend, the non-paella eater, ordered the salmon ($30). Huge piece of salmon over a bed of what appeared to be sautéed veggies. Beautiful presentation (sorry, forgot to photo) and he said it was delish. Lovely ambiance, excellent attentive service, outstanding food at reasonable prices. We will be back. Definitely for the meat paella.

Back then I was younger and on a budget, so I mostly stuck to a few lunch specials and never really explored the rest of the menu. That location has been gone for years, but recently I started going to the Old New York Deli in Camarillo. And now I'm realizing what I've been missing all these years. This is a real, old-school New York Jewish deli and bakery, and I've barely scratched the surface. Let's start with the everything bagels. They're in another class. You really can't compare a good New York-style bagel to something from the grocery store or even most of the bagel shops around here. The chew is different. They're moist, flavorful, and absolutely loaded with everything seasoning. I've been back several times now just to pick up a dozen. I used to think grabbing the double pack of bagels at Costco for six bucks was good enough. Nope. I'm ruined now. These are too good. I'll gladly pay more and actually enjoy the bagel. Then there are the apple turnovers. Astonishing. And the dessert counter is ridiculous. It's overflowing with pastries and desserts, and everything looks like something you want to take home. The staff has also been amazing every time I've been in. And I'm really just getting started. There are blintzes, all the deli classics, and a whole menu I somehow ignored when I was younger. Corned beef and pastrami are very high on my list for the next visit. My only disappointment is realizing I could have been enjoying this place for the last 25 years. I'll be back many, many, times.

My husband grabbed the M&M cookie, but it definitely wasn't freshly made. It was still decent, just not amazing. On the plus side, we had no idea this bakery was so close to where we live! We'll definitely be back to give their breakfast and sandwiches a try, just next time we'll come with more patience and more time. Bottom line: Great drinks, good pastries, but factor in a long wait if you're ordering hot food. Worth a second chance for the full menu!
