Updating my review to 2 stars due to the very passive aggressive note from their community manager when I posted my original review. Would be great for the restaurant to take note and take feedback rather than be unnecessarily rude in their follow up communications. Went to Utsav as we heard they were doing Bengali Thali for the Bengali new year celebrations this year. We went in with very high expectations since we typically order take out from utsav and have found that it scratches a particular itch (limited to indo Chinese only though). When we got there we were immediately seated without reservations. However, one of the hosts came up to us and dissuaded us from getting the thali citing a long wait time. Our server though recommended it and we went for one thali and some apps. The apps were okay - puchchka was not what I'm used to and I didn't enjoy it; mutton chop was decent. The thali itself looked good but was supremely disappointing - the ingredients didn't seem fresh and some of the preparation seemed quite watered down. I don't know if that's because they were high on demand for thali? Anyway, overall we weren't huge fans and will likely only order indo Chinese take out in the future, if at all. read more

We;ve walked past this resturant for several days on our NYC trip we finally stopped in. The dinning area is on the second floor, its a clean and a bit dated dinning area. The wait staff is friendly and they all seem to assist in all of the roles needed. We did sit without anyone coming to our table after they filled our water for, what seemed, like an overly long time. We ordered the Tandoori Broccoli - very flavorful with a nicely and spicy sauce. We shared Chana Masala an onion Naan and rice. They were both good, the Chana didn't have a lot of sauce. The Naan was buttery and filled with onions. My wife mentioned that she thinks too many onions. All-and-all, it was good. read more

Poor experience. They automatically add a gratuity to the bill. Service was very slow. When we had to rush to leave in order to catch a show, we were not given the receipt in hand and we inadvertently paid a second large gratuity on top of the first gratuity they automatically added to the bill. The next day, when I called to ask for the second gratuity to be removed, the restaurant said they couldn't do anything. Misleading business practice. Felt like I was scammed. Much better Indian cuisine can be enjoyed in other establishments that don't feel like a scam. The portion sizes here were also small and not worth the high prices, or the deceptive tipping practice. read more

I don't understand the hype behind this restaurant. Yes, it looks beautiful and is in a prime location but that's pretty much where the compliments stop. We ordered the paneer kulcha which was decent in flavor but the size is comical. The manchurian and noodles were actually not too bad (probably the only redeeming part). Although, the manchurian was a little over-salted. The service was horrible and slow. The dude who was our server was not friendly and we had to wait so long to get more water. Came here for my birthday dinner, and I liked that the restaurant has a Bengali menu. Restaurant is spacious, and the waitstaff is attentive and prompt. The food was delicious! The puchka (pani puri) was reminiscent of my childhood. I enjoyed the kadai paneer and chicken biriyani. I had the mishti doi for dessert, and once again...reminiscent of my childhood. A restaurant and event space serving up delicious Indian and Indo-Chinese eats -- half of the space was rented out for a function, but they do a good job separating the dining area from the music. All of the food here was so delicious, my favorites being the Dum Aloo, Paneer and Shrimp Hakka Noodles -- it took a long time to come out, so we were super hungry with a later reservation. Utsav is located in Midtown Manhattan near Times Square. The seating was uncomfortably close together for how empty the restaurant was for a Friday evening... Taking pride for its Indo-Chinese and traditional Indian cuisine, the restaurant has a mix of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options that cater to all palates. The food at Ustav was flavorful and beautifully presented. The paneer tikka masala was another highlight, with generous chunks of paneer in a tangy, slightly sweet sauce. The biryani packed a punch of spices and flavor while the rice was aromatic. Portions are small considering that traditionally these meals are eaten family style. read more

There are certain European influences also like the snack food tradition and foods like chops , fish fry and cutlets that are British in origin but are prepared and served in most Bengali households. They have focused on presenting classic dishes of Kolkata in their menu. Try the Jhal Muri ,Fish fry, Bhetki Macher Paturi (fish fillet in a spicy mustard paste steamed in a banana leaf), Daab Chingri (large prawns cooked with mustard in a tender green coconut )and Kosha Mangsho (slow-cooked spicy mutton curry) with some Bengali Alur dum , Cholar dal, Luchi. DO NOT EAT HERE! We asked the waitress specifically for mild rather than spicy for our dishes. And she repeated "yes" we will make it mild. Of course when the food came it was so spicy neither my wife or I could eat anything. And I can usually take a level of spice. We usually get the mild for my wife. But we wanted to share. In any case neither of us could eat more than two bites. We told the waitress our food was too spicy and could not eat it. She made no offer to take it back or accommodate us in any way. We ordered three Lassies to calm the heat down. And then some rice pudding. When the bill can I said to my wife at least I don't have to leave a tip for a meal we couldn't eat. And the final coup de gras was that they added 20% to the bill as a gratuity without any notice in the menu or elsewhere for a party of two. Will never go back. read more

Utsav was an okay experience. My friend and I went together and ordered the garlic naan and chicken kali mirch and some type of chicken soup. I have to say, this was not the best meal I've had in my NY trip. The chicken was bland without the sauce but even the sauce was meh. The soup was odd tasting. Service was good but a bit slow. Was weirded out when they put us in a room far away, not too sure what that was about. Would I go back? No. Portions were pretty small for the price I was paying. In a city with so many choices for every type of food, it's hard to find places that distinguish themselves over other similar cuisines. Utsav did itself proud! We visited at lunch hoping for a buffet but ended up ordering a la carte. We had veg samosa, lamb biryani, palak paneer and garlic naan. Wow - it was all so delicious. We have eaten in India many, many times; and we found this to be even better than that. The restaurant has an upscale look and feel. There's cloth napkins and table cloths. Stopped at this place after visiting Rockefeller center. Very spacious restaurant unlike other NY restaurants which tend to be cramped. Nice decor. Crispy chilli babycorn and Chilli prawns (dry) were spicy and awesome. Chicken Haryali Kabab was one of the best I had. Bhetki Macher Paturi (a bengali fish dish) was nice but I would have preferred gravy. Chilli garlic noodles and Chicken in manchurian sauce were both very good. Only reasons this place gets a 4 star instead of 5 are: 1. The Cocktail (Tiki tamarind) was too watery (less alcohol). For $16, it was a ripoff. 2. The entree and appetizers were pricey but portions were less. I would suggest charging a bit more but give your patrons large hearty portions. read more

Had a quick lunch here and the food was super good. The lamb and chaat was flavorful and the naan bread was fluffy and warm. There was also some type of bean curry which I've never had before which was also nutty and delicious. The only thing that was lackluster was the rice - it just tasted kind of dry / stale. Service was good, waiter took time to explain the spice levels and different options for lunch. We had a decent experience here on a Friday night. The dishes were tasty, and the garlic naan bread was to die for (super buttery and flaky). The cocktails were slightly disappointing - we had the vodka passion, which was way too strong. The turmeric margarita was also just ok. Service was a bit slow on Friday night - but be aware that a 20% gratuity is included. We had the hot garlic sauce fish from the Indo-Chinese menu and saag lamb from the Indian menu. This is another Indian cuisine we tried during lunch time. Very specious, good menu options. Tried vegetarian only and taste was very good. It looks like it is more Bengali (east part of India) so assuming sea food preparation must be good. Ambience is very attractive. Off the street this East Indian bar and grill looks like a non-descript bar, but check out the beautiful second level dining space. It comfortably accommodates groups, large and small. Lots of natural light too. We came in for lunch. I suggest the Lunch Specials (~$25 pp) - omnivorous or vegetarian for a complete experience. The Naan and Roti breads were served hot and fresh. I chose a tasty Chicken Masala with sides. The Palik Paneer (cooked spinach-cheese) was the best I've had! I finished with a non-alcohol digestif: Jal Jeera which was terrific! The wait staff were kind, and patient in explaining menu options. It seems Utsav is accustomed to the "power lunch" crowd, so you won't need to wait long to eat. I took my family to this restaurant while we were visiting New York. Ambience is good. We ordered daal tadka, jain daal, papad, jeera rice, tandoori roti, bengan bharta. Taste was good but the service was too slow considering there were handful of customers. The only surprise was the price of water bottle. $8 for a liter of water bottle which costs less than $2. Came here quite awhile back last spring and forgot to write a review. Went here with a group of folks for a lunch. We tried a large variety of things both vegetarian and for meat lovers. Things to know about this spot: It's kind of off the beaten path and hidden with large office buildings and in the lounge of a large building. It's hard to notice it which is a shame because they offer a unique menu of food that I'm not too familiar with and never have had and what I want to call super spicy Indian/Indonesian food. The food was delicious and the service was fantastic. Favorite stand out items: I remember the mustardy fish being creamy and having great flavor for those without a heat tolerance. The fried drumsticks were also fantastic. I'm not sure if everything is the same on their menus. Thin spicy noodles were burn your mouth off but delicious. A giant egg dish that had rice stuffed inside. Don't sleep on desert. Their ice cream with these fried caramel like crisps on top was so good. The only thing I would really say was lacking were cocktails. While being fairly strong, they were choke worthy strong and lacked a nice balance of flavors. I was pleasantly surprised by the distinct flavors, which differ from my usual go-to Indian dishes. While the Indian influence is definitely present, the Bengali dishes stood out with their bold mustard seed flavors, and the Indo-Chinese cuisine had a noticeable Chinese flair. Been to New York recently and we were looking for some Indian comfort food, we found Utsav Restaurant, the restaurant is specializes in traditional Indian cuisine. The portions were generous and food was delicious. Starters: We ordered Manchow soup, samosas and puchkas. I would say puchkas was little cold and little bland. Other starters were pretty decent. Main course: We took Aloo parathas, Butter Naan, Fried Rice and Malai Kofta. Highly recommend and must try their Malai Kofta with Butter Naan and Aloo Paratha, it's a 10/10. Loved that bust of flavors. The restaurant has a great ambiance and a perfect place for business meetings or pre show dining. It is near Times Square so win win for everyone. Accommodations were in a private room which we started outgrowing and they graciously provided more space for us Food was family style and at their suggestion, all guest thoroughly enjoyed the food. My friend and I visited here for dinner after work. We were both not really feeling that hungry so we decided to just get a bunch of appetizers and naan instead of any entrees. We definitely got judged but the server seemed to find it a little funny. We got there at around 6ish and it seemed very empty, but by the time we left at around 8/7:30 the place was really filling up!
