Yianni's Old Chatham House put on a beautiful buffet lunch for my family and guests following my mother's winter funeral. I was pleased with the room and the food. We selected a four item Italian inspired hot lunch with garden salad presented in an urn, chicken parmesan, pasta bolognese, creamy penne mac and cheese (fit for an adult but loved by the kids), and seasoned vegetables. The brownies and cookies were a hit too. We took the extras to our hotel where family ate them all. The staff was timely and extremely courteous. I did make the arrangements long distance so I didn't know what to expect -- nonetheless I was pleased beyond expectation. The only difficulty was in reaching the same person to talk to or email during planning, but it all worked out. Thank you for making our meal the best it could be. This restaurant claims they are a seafood restaurant. We ordered two scallop dinners, I was asked if we wanted rice or potato with that, I said rice, I also ordered the crabcakes for $32. The scallops came out on plates---they were bay scallops that smelled like they sat on a dumpster in the sun all day---slimy and a pile of slop. For some reason, they were covered in tortilla chips with salsa and guacamole on the side. The $32 "lump" crabcakes were just all breading, I don't even think they put crab flavored powder in them. I was never so mystified and disgusted in my life. This is a beautiful restaurant with the most horrendous food in the world---you can get better "scallops" at Popeye's Fried Chicken. What restaurant serves rancid bay scallops covered in tortilla chips as an entree instead of sea scallops and where is the rice or potato we were expecting? They ran out of rice or potatoes and decided to improvise with chips and guac? Who does this? Never go there---Pathetic excuse for a "restaurant". read more

Very slow service. Waited half hour for bread. Was told the restaurant puts 100 rolls in the oven at once and they all come out together. Must be one huge oven that doesn't work because bread was served cold and was not worth the hype. Corn fritters special appetizer came out burnt. I sent it back only to be told by our server after another very long wait, that the chef said they will come out the same way if he recooks them because the batter makes them look that way. Umm...what? I've worked in restaurants for 30 years. The cook left them in too long! Point blank period. I ended up ordering the buffalo chicken egg rolls which were ok. I had the special 22oz grilled sirloin which was in reality about 16 Oz of mostly fat. I ordered it rare but it was raw. I ate it because by this point we had been there for almost 2 hours and had to catch a show. The entire staff seemed frazzled and unable to keep up with customers. Fruit flies buzzed around our table which is a sign of improper cleaning. No music for ambiance and it was sweltering hot in the restaurant. This is such a great Victorian inspired inn on the outside . We walked in to the hostess stand and there was a sign to tell us to check in at the bar . It was confusing and uninviting . The bar was quite lively so took a little bit to tell someone we had made reservations for dinner . We were seated at a window seat in the tavern area . I would totally recommend this as the dining room was quite loud with spillover from the bar as well . The service left much to be desired but adequate . The food was astounding and that alone will have us return . Our bottle of wine took a little bit as I think they had to go down in the cellar to retrieve it . I'm not sure if I'm being sarcastic or if that's what really happened . 2 dinner rolls were delivered to our table with a "here ya go". The rolls were delicious , butter was served in a takeout container . Next, we ordered fried goat cheese salad . I need this in my life always. Delicious . Dressing was served in a takeout container . Husband ordered petit filet mignon and I ordered the twin lobster tails . We both cleaned our plate . Unfortunately, it took way too long for our server to check on us and desserts seemed run of the mill, nothing special so we did not order anything and I think our sever was glad we didn't . Had lunch today at Yiannis in Chatham. Charming, comfortable, clean interior. Lovely waitress came right away, read the specials, we chose two. I had salmon on baby greens salad, spiffed up with feta cheese, cranberries and delicious cubes of butternut squash, light vinegarette. Large portion, salmon was done perfectly. My hubs had the beer batter seafood platter, with coleslaw, tartar sauce, mignon (vinegar) sauce and french fries. A treat! Batter light & savory, shrimp huge, scallops & cod delicious. Very tidy and neat and quiet location. Hard to find from yhe outside. Most locals know it as the Chatham House. Menu is mainly American style with some nice fish and seafood selection when available. Surprising as the owner is Greek and some nice greek dishes would be welcome. Outdoor seating. Some space for larger private gathering. Perhaps the worst dining experience I've had in a over a decade. When the bartender came over for what we thought was to take our order he stated, "I'll get you in 5 to 10 min". This unfortunately was the better part of the evening here. With reservations made, and a nearly empty restaurant, we were beyond surprised to have to seat ourselves as no hostess was present. Drink orders were placed while sitting at the table, yet did not arrive until after the appetizers and salads were served and cleared. A second round of drinks were ordered by a couple at our table and never arrived. After an hour and a half dinner was served. Dinner plates were never cleared, dessert and coffee was never offered... and we had to request the check from the bartender as our waitress never came back. The staff was friendly, and the building is awesomely old yet redone creating a warm, cozy atmosphere. We all ordered off the lunch menu and each of us was happy, happy, happy. I recommend the Cuban Reuben...perfect amount of meat and sauerkraut. We also had the Cobb salad, Caesar wrap and a burger. The burger was slightly overdone but good regardless. Yiannis is my favorite restaurant. I first discovered Yiannis when my husband and I were house hunting over a year ago. We stopped for lunch and had an excellent meal. Since then, we have been back many times for dinner. We always bring visiting family and friends here when they visit us at our new home in Canaan. The restaurant is beautiful and elegant and the staff are always polite and accommodating. So if you want a great meal in a beautiful dining room then this is the place for you. The room is amazing, a gorgeous Victorian with dark woods and rich decor. The food was fantastic-try the shrimp in tomato appetizer-you won't regret it! Only downside-the service is woefully understaffed but the waitress really tried. She was hostessing, bussing tables, taking orders and delivering food. You can't ask one person to do any more than she did. I tipped her $22 on $52 check. It's not her fault that they're understaffed and I never make an employee pay for an owner's mistake. The drinks were amazing, unique concoctions and tailored to the season. Try the Cranberry Gin Mule. If only they'd had one more server for the lunch rush it would have been perfect. read more

Have been patronizing this establishment for several years every summer and we always come late. My wife loves the cheese ravioli and I always enjoyed the sushi, but they no longer serve sushi. The services has always been poor to moderate at best. If you wait at the front door to be seated you will go unnoticed, so we walk in and ask the bartender for a table. Waitress comes over to take our order, but we didn't have menus, so she gets us two. Food came out fast and waitress served us and split with an empty cocktail glass on the table. Didn't see her again until we were ready for the check. Other tables had to get up and seek server for their checks. They are in such a rush to close they don't pay attention to paying customers. On the plus side, it's a nice location, a friendly and casual atmosphere, and the servers are very nice and professional. The food is not massively wonderful, though, on either of the two occasions I've eaten there. It's not awful, but it's not up to the level of the setting and the staff. The sushi (granted, I only had vegetable sushi), apart from feeling very out of place, was not the best. The second time I had eggplant parm, which wasn't bad, but just not great. So, Yiannis' is I think consistent good food. I usually get their burger which is always cooked to my liking. My friends were happy with their dinners also . . . Fish and chips, and 1/2 rack of ribs. Tonite we were very unhappy with our server. Yiannis' serves food out on their deck in the summer, and I think the staff was too thin. But she was not attentive at all, didn't clear our table after dinner (we did). Maybe she just needs to be re-instructed as to server's duties and responsibilities: the all-important wait staff who can make for a great or disappointing evening. read more

Not sure if this place has gone down hill but we have had better previous experiences and customer service seems to be non-existent for an "upscale" establishment. We went to their Easter buffet and were treated poorly. Pretty sure our server forgot about us throughout the whole meal. They also chose to seat our 90 yr old grandmother upstairs and kept the buffet downstairs. It was a nightmare carrying her plate with ours in a tiny elevator that contained cleaned serving ware on the floor. When we arrived to the buffet, many of the trays were empty or picked over. The dessert table had store bought assortment of pies and cookies. At one point the buffet didn't even have plates and a line was building up for ten minutes. We were only served one round of drinks that arrived a half hour into our meal. We ended up going to the bar to pay because our server forgot about us. Our table consisted of a card table set up in a bedroom with plastic cups. Our complaints were initially met with responses such as, "we could have accommodated you," or "you should have said something." We expected way better service compared to other similar so-called "fine" dining establishments, not service that could be compared to fast food. Due to management or ownership being completely defensive and unapologetic, we will never be back. We value our hard earned money to settle for this establishment. read more
