I had a horrifying experience here. They told me I needed to spend over $2,000 on 7 fillings and a crown, when I have never had a cavity in my life. It felt off, so I went for a second opinion at a professional office and confirmed I have zero cavities (it was coffee staining) and no need for a crown (my veneer glue line is not a cavity). I feel their dental license should be questioned. I am grateful they did not con me into this scam and I hope this comment saves you from it too. read more

I was referred to Dr. Valerie Sweeny in Silver Lake by a friend who has had her as his dentist for a very long time. Besides the great recommendation, the office is within walking distance from our neighborhood in Silver Lake, so very convenient. Met with the doc who is very thorough in explaining the procedures. The staff were all friendly, very clean office and was really happy with my painless teeth cleaning and whitening. I thought the pricing for cleaning and whitening was pretty fair and very reasonable. UPDATE: I got a call a few months later to schedule and come in for a teeth cleaning. Went in expecting to have my teeth cleaned as I was told the reason for appointment. Once I got there, had x-rays (thinking this was part of the teeth cleaning appointment) done, then doc came in to give me a long list of what she recommend I have done. No cleaning? NOPE! She suggested a deep cleaning=800.00 and then the list went on to teeth pulled, old fillings removed, mouth guard to straighten lower teeth. I was told to come in for a teeth cleaning right? I initially really liked this place but after the second appointment, felt duped and deceived with this up sell of procedures. I did call after I left and shared my thoughts with them. They did apologize and offered to put the bill for this days visit towards a deep cleaning. Unfortunately, I will not be going back. read more

I Just discovered Dr. Sweeney through a promotion I bought during the holidays. I was very happy to hear they took my health insurance and was willing to accommodate my needs. Dr. Sweeney is super sweet and knows how to take care of her patients. I've always dreaded going to the dentist based on past experiences but she definitely changed my mindset. Do NOT trust any five star reviews (the ones on Google are fake.) I wish I had looked at Yelp before going :( I went in for a cleaning, they tricked me into paying $190 for this "gumline laser" cleaning that wasn't covered by my insurance and didn't do anything. She then insisted I need a bunch of fillings in every corner of my mouth, despite having only one cavity ever, no pain or sensitivity. I took her word because I trusted her. She thoroughly messed up one on the right (didn't fill it in all the way). I couldn't sleep for DAYS because of the pain. I still can't chew on the left side months later because I'm taking my time to find a reputable dentist to FIX HER SHODDY WORK. I reached out to her to make it right and she didn't respond. I'm reporting to my insurance and ADA - this woman shouldn't be practicing. Overall I'm out thousands of dollars and have to get most of her work redone. STEER CLEAR!!!! read more

I should have read the reviews before I came in. UP-SELL is the name of the game here. I am on Dentical insurance and needed a cleaning. That's all I wanted. They tried to up-sell me into a deep cleaning, which is fine, but they refused to do the regular cleaning unless I did the deep cleaning. They claimed they were looking out for my interest, but I walked out without any cleaning at all, so who is that benefiting? I really like this office. I've been coming here regularly for 2 years and my wife has been once. They are so friendly and don't recommend fillings without needing them. My wife had gone to another local dentist who told her she needed two root canals even though she had no pain and that she wasn't cleaning enough. Then, at this office, they told her she was cleaning well and that fortunately there were no root canals. Only challenge here is that my office hours are the same as theirs, so I do have to take off work once in a while but they've been flexible with me on at least one occasion to stay open and wait for me. read more

No longer having dental insurance, I picked this office for a regular checkup because it's very close for me. When I came in though, to my surprise I didn't get a cleaning. What I did get was a diagnosis that I suddenly needed a lot of expensive work. My teeth never bother me, I take good care of them and even last year my x-rays were fine. I shared my confusion with the receptionist, and on my way out another new patient stopped me and told me she'd just had exactly the same experience. Good to know! I was great full to discover that her office is conveniently located on Sunset Blvd in my neighborhood of Silver Lake. Dr Sweeny has made me feel at ease and also makes me laugh. She is a true professional from the first moment of meeting her. Dr Sweeny's charm makes you feel like family. The first time I walked in her office and was greeted by her lovely staff from the drilling in my teeth - Dr Sweeny' s team has covered all the necessary basis. She also has an in house insurance specialist that will provide you with the necessary support to cover all of your insurance costs. BEWARE!! Even though I was embarrassed to admit it I was honest about how long it had been since my last cleaning, at that time it had been over two years. I was told I needed a deep cleaning and that my insurance did not cover this procedure. I could not afford the $1500 they wanted to charge me so I said I would be leaving. Then the hard sell came on... "oh don't worry, we can finance it. Isn't your health important to you? You could lose all of your teeth." Again I said thanks, but no thanks and left. I went to a very prominent dental school in West LA (think huge institution, I'm not mentioning the name of the university as I don't want anyone to think I'm promoting them) assuming this was my only option as they provide free hygiene appointments performed by a dental student. The dentist/professor who examined my teeth before any students saw me said that although it had been a while since I had my teeth cleaned my teeth and gums were in good shape. He complimented me on how well I take care of my teeth and said it was unfortunate but he hears this about shady dentists in LA all the time trying to squeeze money out of people. Unfortunately because I went to them right before the summer break they couldn't see me; my work schedule and their limited teaching schedule for cleanings couldn't work. The reason I'm writing this review today? I called another dentist today, who ran my exact same insurance as before, and I actually do qualify for a deep cleaning COMPLETELY covered by my insurance. I could have had this done before if I had gone to a dentist who wasn't trying to rip me off and try and make me pay cash for a service that WAS COVERED BY INSURANCE. But I will say that the dentist was very friendly and welcoming. But was she only so nice and friendly because she say a bag of money sitting in the examining chair and not a person? read more

The other unhappy reviewers are correct. The Dr. is pleasant (like every good salesperson) but wants to maximize the practices' income, therefore directing patients to potentially unneeded and the more expensive choices. As happened in my case. This was before the following research, and reading of other reviews-- The ADA states and recommends: - no need to replace 'silver' fillings IF there isn't a problem - the 'silver' fillings will last 10-15 years or more - 'silver' are not shown to have any metal leeching issues - these type of fillings are cheaper, safe, and are recommended for use - the newer white composite fillings will last 5-7 years, and will need replacement - should not be used on molars, because they are not strong enough - cost more - most insurances use as a basis for coverage and pay for 'silver' fillings, white composite fillings cost more, the patient pays the difference, this is where the business makes it's money My 'silver' fillings were old but not problematic, the Dr recommended replacing ALL, only with the more expensive and profitable white composite or really expensive crowns, the older 'silver' option was never discussed. The filling were only on molars. Replaced 5 fillings with white composite - 3 of 5 broke and shattered within 24 hours. Returned to Dr for a fix, she assured me the problem was not the materials - so it must be the technique(?) I asked, she would not answer. The next round of fillings were too high, causing pain and discomfort, which because of my unfamiliarity with them I thought was ok and would eventually be OK, after back and forth with the Dr and her office, 2-3 weeks later returned for them to be ground down. There's more, but will leave it here, except to say: Don't go. It was a hard up sell at every turn. Uses scare tactics to push the work. Encourages putting payment(s) on credit cards Won't/doesn't fully explain ALL options - only the ones to bring in more money, those beyond standard insurance coverage payments, or out of pocket additions. Doesn't follow ADA guide lines, ie. don't use white composite on molars, etc. I'll have to resolve her 'work', with another Dentist. read more

Ah...I get in now. I hadn't read the other reviews before. I see I made the grave mistake of mentioning Denti-Cal and also asked for pricing on a minor cosmetic procedure. None of this added up to enough money for them apparently, so I was "dismissed" straight away. Sweeny never intended to call back or answer emails. A further mistake was my mentioning I lived very close to her office in one of the three (unanswered) voicemails. Doesn't seem like others in the neighborhood had very good experiences there and perhaps that was a "red flag" for her. This place is the worst dentist office I've ever visited for so many reasons. Disorganized front desk, rip off & try to convince you of expensive services, the dentist makes so many suggestions for expensive and unnecessary treatments you can't possibly trust they are suggesting these things for the right reasons. I've been going to Dr. Sweeny for many years and she is the best dentist! I'm terrified of needles but not with her. It is never painful when she gives me the novocaine shots. She is super gentle and I would highly recommend her to my friends and family. She is also so sweet and nice. She truly cares for her patients well being, constantly asks if you are okay while she is doing any dental work. I will be her patient as long as I have my teeth. I'm always scared to get dental work done, mainly because I'm terrified of needles and drilling, but not with Dr. Sweeney. Thank you Dr. Sweeny for making all of my visits less scary. read more

Would not recommend this practice. Dentist is not bad, however the staff is not very efficient. Waited over 3 hours in the waiting room for a regular cleaning although there was no one else in the waiting room and no one ever came to explain what was going on. This office will also try to sell you other services (teeth whitening which doesn't work) if they cannot find anything else wrong with your teeth. read more

TRUST THE BAD YELP REVIEWS. As others have said, I am not one to leave negative reviews. Before coming here, I discounted other reviews as people being "crazy" or "self righteous." As I sat in the chair I laughed to myself because I was having the same exact experience that every bad review described. Over charged, over sold, and basically told my teeth would fall out if I didn't do x, y, and z. I even asked the sweet technician about all the bad reviews... It seems like a clean place with a nice staff (which it is) but even with amazing dental insurance I ended up paying $500 and spent 2 hrs for a cleaning because they overbooked. Please find another dentist even if she's convenient to where you live, which is why I ended up there and discounted the reviews. P.S. she pointed out visual problems with my teeth that I had never noticed! It was like going to a plastic surgeon for one thing and the doctor pointing out 5 other things to be self conscious of! I went to see Dr. Sweeny for a regular dental check-up. I chose her office because it's local. I am very happy that I did. The entire staff was helpful and I really felt catered to as a patient. She was straightforward with her analyses and offered lots of advice. I'm glad I chose to go to Dr. Sweeny; she is very professional and has a great bedside manner. I can honestly say that with Dr. Sweeny as my dentist, I don't dread going to the dentist but actually look forward to it. Melissa, the dental assistant, is also very kind and helpful. I have a real serious phobia of the dentist. The team at Dr. Sweeny's office makes sure I am completely comfortable when I'm in the chair by constantly checking on me asking if I'm ok. They call and text to check on you to after the procedure to make sure you're good. They are very attentive. Not to mention affordable. I'm very fortunate to have stumbled upon a dental office with great staff that takes care of yoh as if you were family. I reallly do mean that. zero zero zero stars!!!! i'm so mad that I didn't come to yelp before going to this dentist and only trusted the google reviews which are definitely fake. i have extreme dental anxiety and try to pick good dentists, but sometimes i tend to feel like i'm being too skeptical and should just accept whatever the dentist said. well, i did exactly that and I'm pretty sure the $3k i just paid was all for nothing. the front staff is really nice, but that's about all the positive things i can say about this place. the dentist i had (not valery but Dr. Nguyen) was a bit judgmental, i got hit in the head with the x-ray machine, and was put through what i now realize was incredibly unnecessary dental work. most of the cost was from fillings they said "had to be redone" even though there were no cavities there, and they said one of my cavities were so bad that they had to sand down half of my tooth and put in a crown. this was me just going in for a regular check-up, no pain or sensitivity at all!! read more

Classic BAIT and SWITCH! My GF and I signed up for a teeth whitening special. The catch is that Ms. Sweeny and crew have to examine your teeth and "approve" they are in shape enough for the bleach. My gf and I were both told we needed a "deep cleaning" before they could bleach. This deep cleaning I was told, no joke, was going to be $4200, but that "since we like you(direct quote) it'll only be $2400. They then referred me to Care Credit which is a loan company that is fresh off a 34 million dollar lawsuit for misleading business practices. All I wanted was a refund for the $60 the whitening was supposed to cost. They told me a separate company handles that and they could give me their number. I mean, seriously? Could you be more shady and dishonest? I can't wait to see Ms. Sweeney's "sorry to hear you had a bad experience with us" response. She does it for all her bad reviews. Incompetence at its finest. I finally decided to begin the dental work that has needed done for quite some time despite my anxieties. X-rays took an hour to complete... An hour with the terribly bulky bite block in your mouth intermittently. I was asked to hold the X-ray machine in place for my own films. Stating that I had a large infection and needed a root canal, she suggested opening it to drain by drilling a hole in the tooth. I agreed to relieve some of the pain. Due to infection and not being placed on antibiotics prior to the procedure, the anesthetic was not working. At one point she stated, "I don't know what to do".... She stopped to let yet another dose of a anesthitics set in, everyone left the room with my tooth rubber banded, mouth covered, after my entire body had been shaking and I was in tears the entire time. I finally got someone's attention and requested she remove the band and stop because it was entirely too painful. She then became rude, very quickly and messily inserted temporary filling, and walked out. The filling chipped away over the next few hours and the pain after her procedure was no longer the initial dull ache but an entire facial pain, all teeth on the right side are excruciating. I completely regret doing anything about my tooth ache. I wish I had gone somewhere cleaned, more efficient, and with a competent staff. It was a terrible experience and I will be seeking legal help. read more
