I LOVE Vallarta! They have an excellent selection of Mexican food and groceries, and staff are always helpful and kind. All food is made in-house and fresh, and service has always been delightful and fast. Food I tried and loved are their pastries (they have a $5 for 5 deal last time I came in), tamales, and enchiladas. Drinks I loved have been their horchata and champurrado (perfect for the cold weather and their large size is huge!) I also buy the Mexican candies, snacks, and drink mixes when I get a chance. I will definitely be visiting again soon!

I read somewhere that this is one of the go to places for tamales! Wow! I didn't have any expectations and was blown away by how awesome this market it! I've driven by so many times, now I'm going to put it in my regular rotation! First, I was so impressed with the guacamole station! It is like custom order on steroids! Anything you like on your guacamole, you can get it! Salsa, cilantro, onions, jalapeños, they'll make it your way! The ceviche station was equally impressive. I saw two ladies holding their $12 to go cups. It reminded me of the dinner scene from Beetlejuice, the shrimp on top were gigantic!! And no longer do I hear the familiar crowing and little bell ringing of a cart down the neighborhood announcing "TAMALES! Tamales! Tamales!" Gone is the lady who used to sell them out of the flatbed truck out of an igloo cooler in the parking lot of the 99 cent store (which is also gone). I was so happy to make my selection from the indoor tamale cart, one side is savory, the other is sweet. If you are inclined to make your own, no problem, there's a whole section dedicated to masa and hominy. Was in a hurry, but will be back to explore. Only got a glimpse of all the saint candles for $2.50. I might need the large Virgin de Guadalupe one for $10. Opted for self check out. Very convenient!

Love stopping here for a large aguas Fresca $4.99 and a three taco meal )comes with sides of you like. I typically just get the tacos. They are a great size. Tortilla shells are handmade. Meat perfect seasoned. And come with two salsas. Service is welcoming, efficient and always a pleasure to visit. Ambiance is your typical grocery experience.

I love to come here because this is the closest Mexican market for me. I work in Pasadena and I come here straight from work. If I want to do a taco night or want some ceviche. Last night I went to pick up some ceviche and Carne Asad taco meat. Already marinated from the meat department. I was cooking it and when it was almost fully cooked I found some white pieces of foreign material. Thinking it's the fresh onions in it. Come to my surprise when I picked it up to examine it. It was pieces of white hard plastic. Not sure what it was I found a couple of more pieces. Imagine if I didn't see it while eating it. I would have either choked or broke a tooth or something. I called the store took me many calls before someone tried to contact me. Talked to the store Manager. Raul said he apologizes and very sorry that happened. He said to come to the store with the receipt and the stuff I found and he will refund me for the product. I went in today he wasn't there. Talked to an employee. Susana and she help me get my money back for the product. This is not cool I work the food industry and is aware of safety practices and healthy food handling. I hope there wasn't more in the meat and bigger pieces because it would be a problem. Just wanted to let everyone know and Management aware of what's going on in the meat department.

Vallarta Supermarket is a pretty popular supermarket where they make tortillas and bakery items, have a butcher, stations for cheese, Ceviche, sushi, chicharron, floral and so much more. The one thing I noticed...I didn't see or hear staff greeting customers or asking customers if they needed help. They would just walk by or staff would just be talking with each other.

Chips that are as thick as a brick! Hard too.

I purchased some salsa and premium tortilla chips from Vallarta as I was headed to the Hollywood Bowl for a summer concert. Omg! These chips are the absolute WORST! they're hard and thick,I almost broke my tooth off. My husband had to spit it out because of how thick and chunky the chips are. I believe they make them in house. Buyers beware! You will run the risk of choking or chipping your tooth with their tortilla chips. The birds won't even eat them.

Grocery shopping in Pasadena, California... My friend, Mikey C., posted photos of frankincense and myrrh from Vallarta Supermarket in Oxnard, California. I thought that I could find some at the Pasadena location... No such luck. However, I did find other items... First of all... the name of the store changed. The storefront reads: Vallarta Supermarket. My GPS brought me here to La Cocina Vallarta. Maybe because this Supermarket has a deli section with prepared foods to go? Anyway, the products were amazingly different. It's like I was in a foreign country. The freshly made tortillas, Mexican decorations, spices, earthenware, greeting cards, aprons, party favors, etc. were fascinating! I had to get some horchata mix to try. I also got some Mexican candy and nectarines. I'll have to return again and do more exploring...

Dear Pasadena Public Health Department Environmental Health Division,…read more I am writing to formally report a serious health code violation and unsanitary conditions observed at Ralphs Grocery Store, located at 160 N. Lake Ave., Pasadena, CA 91101. Incident Details * Date of Observation: Monday, July 27, 2026 * Time of Observation: Approximately 3:00 PM * Location Inside Store: Self-serve bagel and bread display cabinet Description of the Violation The self-serve bagel and bread display case was teeming with flies. Numerous insects were actively flying inside the cabinet and crawling directly all over the uncovered food products. I have captured clear video evidence documenting this infestation, which is available upon request for your investigation. Public Health Risks and Concerns This environment poses an immediate and severe health risk to consumers for several critical reasons: * Pathogen Transmission: Flies carry over 100 dangerous pathogens. They easily transfer hazardous bacteria such as Salmonella, E. coli, Listeria, and Shigella from external waste directly onto the food surfaces. * Direct Contamination: Because flies liquefy solid food, they regurgitate digestive enzymes and defecate on the bakery items. This leaves live bacteria and viruses behind. * Ready-to-Eat Hazards: These items are sold as ready-to-eat foods. Consumers eat them without cooking or heating them first, meaning there is no kill-step to destroy the transferred pathogens. This creates a high probability of foodborne illness. * Prolonged Exposure: The enclosed nature of the display cabinet traps the flies inside, leading to a high concentration of continuous contamination on the food. This active infestation indicates a critical failure in store sanitation, inadequate pest control management, and a clear violation of California retail food safety codes. Please initiate a health inspection of this facility as soon as possible to address this hazard and protect the public. Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.

But the elderly can't do that so it's why the lines are so long. Now here is the kicker. At the end of the checking line is a manager ...sometimes 2. A man and a woman. They are observing the long lines...counting something...just observing. It would help if THEY just go to the end of a long line and start bagging! See, that would be cool! You see you guys have not scheduled any baggers and the lines are so long they are down the aisles .. and you are just standing there? Of course they may say, well that's not my job. But that's the mentality that keeps things moving slow. It would be so nice if people just did what it takes to keep things moving. Either hire enough people OR get in there and start bagging! I remember back in the days there was a bagger at the end of each checkout aisle. A bagger and a casher! Those days are gone ...and most stores now see if they can get away with overworking the checker! Next thing you know they install self check outs! Rather than hire people and keep a system of people working they just get rid of people and have 1 person observing (like these managers were doing). What a world we are moving towards. But anyways that's what you see. I wish they would just hire bag boys and go back to the good ol days.

But at the end of the day, when I'm paying that much for a smoothie, I expect the taste and overall experience to be on another level. For me, the price-to-quality ratio just isn't there. Another time, the pizza stand was completely empty and I saw numerous packaged pizza doughs that looked like they had been out and over proofing for wayy too long! It wasn't refrigerated, and when I asked what happened, they said the burner broke down. If that's the case , you need to refrigerate the dough or hire someone that cares enough to handle food properly there. The cashiers never smile, don't make eye contact, and never greet you. They all look miserable ALL THE TIME! One time a cashier filled up one of my bags with really heavy groceries then told me to put it in the cart. He didn't try to put it in the cart himself because even he couldn't (it was so heavy). He didn't have the common sense or decency to even try emptying some of it into another bag . He just stood there, said nothing. (I ended up doing that myself) I tried to cut some slack for these guys, and give them the benefit of the doubt, and I've never once been rude to anyone there (even when I felt I had every right) I still kept quiet. However, the consistency of the horrendous customer service skills is disgraceful and disgusting. Where are the managers? Who is on the hiring committee? Why aren't any of these people getting proper training? Where is quality control? It's sad that standards are so low at this location that you treat your long time loyal customers this bad. Truly a shame. If I was a health inspector, I'd be shutting down your pizza center first, then I'd fire every single cashier there and train proper human beings to work with human beings.
