Lots of space in here so the wait wasn't long. We were able to pick out our own table. Service was ok, they seemed really busy after we sat and had to be flagged down if we needed anything or wanted to order. The salad I got was ok. Missing something, just wasn't quite my taste, kind of plain tasting. I enjoyed the little dessert we shared. Lovely presentation. I'd probably order something different if I were to visit again.

First time eating at the popular Vanessa's Bistro. Enjoyed my refreshing Mint Cucumber Martini and the piping hot French onion soup the most. We ordered the Garlic Noodle Stir fry from the specials menu because of the low price and comes with 2 proteins and vegetables. Sadly the garlic noodles didn't have any garlic and it was lacking flavor over all. The chicken lettuce wraps were good but could use a little more sauce or vinegar to liven it up. Overall the service was fast and food tasted fresh. The bar was packed as we just missed happy hour (4-6pm) and the staff seemed to know a lot of the regular customers which is always a good sign. We will come back and try again!

Everyone is sleeping on Vanessa's and I honestly don't know why. Happy hour EVERYDAY?! $10 cocktails and $10 select apps, including spicy crispy tofu? You'll want 2 spicy crispy tofus, it's THAT GOOD. Options for kids (garlic noodles and potstickers) that keeps them happy and excited to visit. My husband said the steak was the best he's ever had. So many specials that made us want to visit again very very soon. Honestly everything was so incredibly good, it was the best meal we've had in a looong time. Service was great, very sweet towards my kiddos. We will be back and you should go too!!!

It was a little pricey but the food was superb (crispy quail was hands down my favorite) and beautifully presented. The outdoor seating is really pleasant, but inside is just as great -- fun and friendly. The staff is super helpful and always willing to lend a hand with ordering. One tip we got from our waiter was if Vanessa's in the kitchen, you have to order something stir fried!

Always appreciate going to Vanessa's walking distance and in our neighborhood. Tasty food and drinks that hit the spot. Service is friendly and attentive. We sat at the bar this time. A staple go to is the chicken wings and this time we tried the salads and sweet and sour soup. Salads were large portions and soup made for a nice warm meal on a cold rainy day. Inside there's enough seating for 1-2 larger groups and then mostly tables for 2-3. We'll be back!

Water was refilled promptly, food came out fairly quickly, and staff were around whenever we needed more drinks or food. The tapas were great with a few standouts: pulpo, croquetas, bimi (broccolini), calamares, and patatas bravas. All had rich flavors and paired well with the provided sauces. We also got three paellas (valenciana, tres cerditos, and paella mixta). They were good but not my favorite. Texture was on the softer side and I prefer mine crispier. Good variety of proteins across the three though, so worth ordering a mix. Sweets were good but not amazing. I'd probably just get the cinnamon roll next time. I prefer churros with a crispy exterior and soft center, these were crispy pretty much all the way through, not really my style. Brunch menu looks worth a try with some creative options. Wouldn't mind coming back, though it's not a must since I'm about 40 minutes away. Tapas were the highlight, paella and desserts kept it from 5.

First, the host is an older gentleman, and it took a few minutes to be seated even with a reservation. My husband and I ordered cocktails, 2 tapas, and the vegetarian paella. The paella requires 30-45 min to cook. This becomes important to the story later. We received the tapas before our cocktails arrived. When the cocktails finally arrived, the server almost gave them to the table next to us. I had to flag her attention that those were for me. This was the same server who took our order...?!?! So that was weird. We were done with the tapas and the cocktails. Our server asked if we wanted something more to drink, so we decided to get a bottle of red wine. The server poured our wine, spilled a big drip across our table, wiped off the bottle, but didn't bother to wipe the table! There was a group of 4 people next to us, and they were seated about 15 min after us. But they received a paella really fast. So my husband and I were dismayed because the server probably gave our food to the wrong table. So, we drank our wine and waited for someone to come and speak to us. We expected some kind of acknowledgement that our order was going to be slow. Waited. And waited. Then the table next to us received the paella that they actually ordered (with seafood). And we kept waiting. The server apologized to THEM about bringing them the wrong paella at first, but no apology or explanation to us! At this point, I'm staring at the server, trying to get her attention, getting pretty angry. My husband is a good person, so he's making jokes and making me laugh. He points out a small dog sitting on a chair inside the restaurant. Definitely not a service animal. At this point, I'm so aggrieved and laugh that I'm going to report a health code violation. The server finally comes to us and apologizes for the mix-up, it will be 45 more min for our paella. She tries to compensate by giving us 2 glasses of cava. But like... I'm starving and tipsy. I ask my husband if I should get a corn dog at Foster's Freeze while we wait for paella... Finally, the food arrives. The paella is good but not excellent. My husband makes paella at home that's better than this. He lived in Spain for a while, so he knows and uses a bunch of saffron. La Marcha's paella just tasted like rice with tomatoes and veggies, no saffron flavor or color. We ate the paella, ordered dessert. When the tab came, they didn't give us any kind of discount. The dinner took 2.5 hours! So I am normally a good tipper, but this time, I only tipped 10% and wrote a long note about our disappointment. I figured the other $25 that I would give to the server was going to pay for the babysitter for the extra hour that it took for us to eat dinner. tl;dr Food was good but not excellent. Service was terrible. I am never going back.

It was conveniently located across the street from the venue, and the unassuming outside of the restaurant did not hint at the amount of fun, ambiance, good food, and warm hospitality contained inside. First, there is the name. Not sure if it's some sort of play on words, secret joke, or if it's someone's actual name, but it works, kinda. It's kinda a restaurant, kinda a bar, kinda of a hangout, and kinda fun. The tiny entrance and plain facade reveals a bustling world of delicious food, tasty beverage, and lots of decorative eye candy to keep you looking around the space while you are hanging out with friends, on a date, or just relaxing after a long day. The decorations there are very upbeat, eclectic, fun, and distinctly Japanese pop culture. Posters, banners, flags, lanterns, toys, and trinkets can be found all over the restaurant, and made it fun to keep looking around and discover new novel things to look at. I did feel like I was in an authentic Izakaya somewhere in Shinjuku, Shibuya, or Ebisu in Tokyo. The place had a lot of personality & personal flair in an otherwise, tiny & industrial small warehouse type space. Service was excellent. The host was the cute & personable Mina, who couldn't have been more accommodating, patient, friendly, and engaging. It was very busy, and even though it was our first time there, Mina made us feel welcome into their home and was also very helpful to guide us around their experience. The other staff were less engaging, but still professional, efficient, and polite. Service was quick, attentive, and friendly on all accounts, and they as a team, managed to serve an entire full house of hungry & happy patrons during the entire Saturday night dinner rush. Fun place with a good staff. We opted for Izakaya-type, shared small plates to satisfy our hunger cravings without getting too full and weighed down on big portions of heavy, rich foods. Everything on the long & expansive menu looked great, but we mostly stuck with small appetizers to sample & savor. It was nice that there were plenty of lighter, fresh vegetarian options as neither of us were really in the mood for seafood, fried food, or big heavy entrees. We ordered the Kinda Tofu, Kyuri sliced fresh cucumber salad, and Kinoko butter-grilled mushroom hot platter and washed it down with some green grape Jinro soju. Everything was pretty good! Not overly fried, greasy, salty, or seasoned. Lightly cooked, delicately glazed, with just enough seasoning & oil/sauce to make it taste good, but not end up too complicated or messy. The taste really came through using these minimal cooking & seasoning techniques. The taste of the original vegetables & tofu came through perfectly, and were only complimented by their light hints of adding flavor. Portion sizes were ample for two people, and presentation was appetizing and organized. The bill for 3 apps + 1 bottle of Soju was less than $50, so it was a good value for the fun experience & good food. Wait times during the dinner rush are long, and there isn't really anywhere to sit or stand, so reservations are recommended. You can also enter and go straight to the 10-seat bar if there are openings, but we got a table for two after around a 20-30 minute wait. After that, everything moves pretty quickly, from ordering, getting food & drinks, to wrapping up and getting your check. Perfect system if you're trying to get to a concert, movie, or appointment with a specific start time. I really liked this place, not Kinda, not Sorta, but Definitely, or Absolutely! Kinda Izakaya will always be our destination to eat & hang out next time we come back to Berkeley, it is a true gem of a Japanese Izakaya/light meal fare right in the heart of downtown Berkeley. It's fun, tasty, busy, and friendly. Small & cozy, yet also airy & comfortable.

Naturally, we ordered as many chicken skewers as possible, and every single one was fantastic. I had to look it up, and once I realized it was basically the chicken equivalent of rich, fatty oxtail-style meat, I knew I had to try it. Holy hell, it was easily the best chicken skewer I've ever had. I would honestly come back just to order multiple of these. The squid ink rice was incredibly savory and filling, and paired with a few beers, this made for such a great evening out. All in all, Ippuku is a must-visit in Berkeley if you're into izakayas.

I'm definitely curious to try the bacon-wrapped mochi at a future visit. The only downfall was that the kitchen was extremely backed up during our visit. Throughout the meal, he never checked on our table, even though we noticed him checking on the surrounding tables several times. At one point, the patio umbrella unexpectedly fell near our table. Instead of first asking if everyone was okay, his only response was, "Do you mind if I close the umbrella?" That was disappointing and made us feel overlooked. The only time his attitude became noticeably friendlier was when he brought the check. We happened to be the only Asian table that afternoon. The moonlight blossom tasted similar to cherry limeade. The entrees we had were the mussels, veggie burger, and the chef's market pizza. The mussels themselves were tasty and appreciated that they were able to leave out the chorizo. However, I wish that they brought a spoon and there was more broth. I tried some of my mom's veggie burger and the red color from the beets made it stand out from the usual veggie burger. The fries tasted homemade. I had a slice of the pizza and while I like the ingredients themselves, the combination just didn't do it for me. The crust was good though! We also shared a green goddess salad, which was tasty. The desserts looked amazing but we had no room! Service was friendly and our waitress made good recommendations. Can park on the side streets or the garage. Restaurant was not noisy. Would come back to try other items, especially dessert.

There was no wait time and we were able to get a table. The server was very sweet. I am vegetarian and was looking for veg options. She went through the menu with me and helped me think through. I got the vegan spicy tomato pizza and my friend got the shakshouka. We also got some herbal tea to go on the side. The tea came out pretty quickly and tasted great. The food also came out pretty quickly. The presentation of the pizza was top notch and I could not wait to dig in. The portion size was adequate. The vegan cheese was yummy and the spice level of the pizza was just right. The pizza was packed with flavor and thin crust! My friend liked the shakshouka too. He said it was flavorful and tasted great! Over all, we loved this restaurant. The ambiance is very welcoming and they have farm to table concept. If you are looking for a nice restaurant with farm to table theme, look no further!
