For context...Half empty restaurant. we had a reservation for 2 people.. As we walked in, another couple entered behind us and had no reservation. Hostess seats us DIRECTLY next to another couple in the restaurant...seats are almost elbow to elbow so I kindly ask the staff if we may move to a table with more space. They say no, all the other seats are reserved. Ok. But then the couple with NO reservation gets seated at the exact table I asked to move to. WTF? -1 for ambiance and lack of common sense. We of course then wait about 10 minutes to get some water and be introduced to the waitress. Mind you, this is a SMALL restaurant. We sense the slow table service so we decide to order everything at once. we order the dozen oysters (which are $48 and smaller than you've ever seen). They bring us out 6 so we have to wait for the second half. -1 for organization and service The manager was walking around "looking busy" but not really doing anything to make the place run smoother. I got the NY steak. About $80. It was burned and charred to taste. somehow still medium rare. Overall was not satisfied with the meal. For the price you'll pay, this place does NOT make the cut. For the price you pay, the service isn't there. Another example of what I'm talking about--the couple that was extremely close to us was being asked to remove plates while they were still eating! Finally made it to Van Horn's after anticipating it for a long time. While the food and drinks definitely hit the mark, the atmosphere on a Friday night was a bit overwhelming. The space was packed tightly, with very little room between tables. It's a lively scene, but it left us wishing we'd picked a more intimate spot for our anniversary. Flavor-wise, the kitchen knows what they're doing. The 20oz steak paired with chimichurri and macaroni was a standout, and the martinis were perfectly mixed. The only miss was the asparagus, which was too thick and tough. Brunch after a group Pilates class just feels right, and VanHorn's made it feel even better. This place is so cute without trying too hard, and it immediately gave me "I could come here every weekend" energy. We went as a group, so of course we did it the right way and ordered a mix to share. We started with the whipped ricotta with truffled honey and hazelnuts, the monkey bread with that cinnamon brown sugar glaze, and their famous pancakes as a table dessert. Let me just say, I would happily eat all three of those by myself without hesitation. The pancakes are massive in the best way, and I'm actually glad we shared because they are no joke. For my entrée, I got the ham and gruyère crepe with a frisée salad and champagne vinaigrette, and it was the perfect balance to all the sweetness. We came to Van Horn's tonight for a belated Valentines dinner. Our reservation was cancelled because of rain in February- they do not have any coverings on their patio. It was also our anniversary and I appreciated the acknowledgement right away with some champagne. Nice touch. We ordered an old fashioned and a dirty kettle martini with bleu cheese olives. We started with the whipped ricotta- stunning. Amazing. No notes. Appreciated the extra bread with no upcharge. 10/10. For our meal- we went crazy and ordered the porterhouse for two, Mac and cheese, German potatoes, and the heirloom tomato and onion salad. Steak- 8/10. Cooked to perfection served in bubbling butter. Could have been slightly more tender and seasoned and presentation was not great. Mac and cheese- 9/10. I loved the shape of the pasta. Ours was perfectly baked and crusty but still cheesy and not dry on the inside. German potatoes- 6/10. They looked really burned on the outside and maybe that's normal but they were just shredded potatoes with a ton of sour cream. I mean, potatoes are great in general but wouldn't order again. Heirloom tomatoe salad- 4/10. The tomatoes were delicious and seasoned and the steak sauce wa oddly great with it. but the raw onions were so thick it was almost inedible bc no seasoning could penetrate that. For dessert we got the cheesecake- and I ascended. Will come back everyday for that cheesecake and homemade whipped cream. Best thing of the night. 100/10. Over the good: I thought the price for portions was pretty fair which I rarely say. Those sides were definitely bigger than other steakhouses around. Easily shareable with 3-4 people if you order a few. I also thought our server was lovely, knowledgeable and everyone was very attentive. They didn't rush you, and my water glass never got below half full. We didn't have to wait around for the check and dirty dishes were promptly removed. Oh and did I mention the cheesecake? The not so good: other reviews have mentioned this but the timing was way off. We were done with our appetizer before our first drinks came out. Our steak came a solid 5-8 mins before the sides. Even our server did acknowledge drinks were running very behind. And then unfortunately whoever designed the tables didn't anticipate big backs like us coming in because our table was not big enough for what we ordered. The porterhouse platter was massive and the servers struggled to get our sides on the table. Half my dinner plate was sticking off and I had to to be really careful it didn't flip. And my dirty martini was definitely NOT dirty but it was still so crisp and good I'll let it slide. I did not however, appreciate the $5 up charge for kettle. The biggest issue was the acoustics- it was LOUD in there. We could barely hear one another. As a New England girl, I loved the New York vibes and the aesthetic went a long way to making the experience. I could totally get an NYC vibe based on the set up/decor which makes the inside feel older than it is. Was a tad on the loud side inside not a lot of softwears to dampen the sound. Wade took care of me and he was amazing! From his introduction and explaining the rationale behind their concept with an NYC vibe referencing Peter Lougers in NYC. (Haven't made it there yet). Wade was kind to recommend two wines and tried both. When the glass was delivered I tasted something was off and he replaced with the correct wine I ordered. Great service! Menu was a typical steakhouse but they did have a special for lent of arancini with scallops and shrimp I believe. Had a few other accompaniments that I can't recall. I ordered the Cesar salad and the ribeye with the creamy horse radish on the side. The Cesar salad was to die for, really it was the brioche croutons that are sautéed in the garlic butter from the shrimp scampi...then baked. OMG. Imma need them to sell those as a grab and go! Visit at VanHorn's on a weekday and it was still packed, so was excited to see what the hype was about. Indoor and outdoor seating, and reservations can be made in advance. We were seated upon reservation time. Wanting to know it is loud inside. It was pretty hard to have a conversation without hearing others as well. The tables are seated very close together. The menu features steaks, raw bar options, multiple different side dishes, and a full back menu of drinks. The service itself was great. Our water was constantly being filled and we were constantly checked on. The steaks did take a little to come out just because they were packed. No fancy presentation, but the steaks were cooked perfection. The sides is where it's at, the mashed potatoes were very buttery. The showstopper was a New York cheesecake. All right I think this is my new favorite steakhouse. You definitely need to make a reservation because this place is always busy. It is very small inside but it is so cute. Definitely a date night or girls night or just because you wanna go have a good steak kind of night. The host is and the waiters were so nice. They knew what to recommend and did such a great job and making sure we were always doing fine. Definitely need to come back and try a lot more stuff because everything just looked delicious but we did start off with the tuna carpaccio, which was amazing. It did not even taste like fish. It was perfectly made. We also got the steak tart and that was so good. It was marinated so well, and it came with little sourdough breads, which were delicious. After that for our main course, we did get in the bone and ribeye. We got it medium, and they cooked it to perfection. We also got the whipped potatoes which were so good. We couldn't stop eating them and let me tell you those beer battered onion rings are a must. They are delicious. They had a great selection of cocktails. I had to try out the espresso martini cause there was so many talks of how good it was and it did not disappoint. It was not overly sweet or overly creamy. It was just perfect. My wife and I went to VanHorn's for our anniversary dinner. I cannot say enough great things about this restaurant. I loved the ambience. It has that fancy Manhattan steakhouse vibe, but is quiet enough to actually have a conversation with another person. We started out with drinks. First time trying this new steakhouse on 2nd. I was very excited for a steakhouse on the street I work! It has a very cosy feel to it and does feel straight out of NYC with the wood/red furniture. The plating was weird. Bok choy was the best thing on the plate. Filet - 8oz for 58 and it was good. Nothing to write home about. For $4 more you can get a FANTASTIC filet at two other steak places in downtown. It was different that the filet was plated on oil ... it didn't add any flavor or anything.. this could be a me issue. You say you're New York City influenced yet you don't have any jazz, Frank Sinatra or the jazz Classics? The food is just so basic yet it's priced like any other steakhouse in Austin. The bread is not homemade it comes from a bag, the butter is not homemade, they had nine servers for 15 tables and yet no one asked us if they wanted to top us up on another glass of wine. The cheesecake was bomb straight from Brooklyn shipped in, which makes sense because anything in this restaurant made in house seems to be lackluster. The good: The vibes. I can't really think of another restaurant in Austin that gives off the same cozy feeling with all of the wood tones. It's small enough where it feels intimate and you can have a proper conversation with your table. Definitely felt very NYC/Chicago. The not so good: The food. We went on NYE, so maybe that was a mistake. But the food was mediocre for the price point. The black cod was overcooked and just looked unappetizing. It was probably one of the ugliest platings of food I have seen in a long time. Three brown blocks of cod slapped on top of carrot puree with bok choy thrown on the side. The wedge salad was ok, but for $21, I would expect to blown away. The bacon was chewy and looked a bit pale. The steak tartare was fine, but again, for a steakhouse, I would expected better treatment of the meat. Cuts were chunky and slightly mealy. I am a steakhouse dude. I love great steakhouses and search them out. On first visit, first, VanHorn's has very good food. My filet mignon was prepared perfectly and had an amazing sear and char on the outside. It and the au poive sauce and creamed spinach side were fabulous. Five stars on food. We ate at the bar and received excellent service and the drinks were great. I do have a couple of cautions to share. You are paying luxury prices, meaning high comparable steakhouse prices, for high quality food. There were a couple of surprises. A $100 bottle of wine was sourced from a shelf behind the bar at bar temp, not from a cellar or wine fridge at cellar temp. Had to request a chill to proper temp. That surprised me. And, parking was a pain. No valet option nearby I could find. I had to park two levels down - in the building - and no validation is offered at all. Had to pay downtown parking rates which are absurd. To me, any steakhouse charging luxury steakhouse prices and competing with the other high end options nearby, must have some sort of reasonable valet parking situation for customers. Net, net, the food experience was excellent, though the overall dining experience needs work for what you are paying for, and this restaurant is not yet on par with the other comparable luxury steakhouse options as far as the overall dining experience goes in this town in my opinion. They are early in their history and I hope these concerns are addressed. I did love the food and my steak, which is really most important to me in many ways. read more

It was going to start raining, which is not the restaurants fault but when we arrived, the host and manager told us they had called to cancel. They hadn't, and they didn't even have my phone number on file. What made it worse was the complete lack of effort to fix the situation. No offer to seat us at the bar, no attempt to accommodate us inside, no waitlist option--nothing. We had planned this as a special occasion and drove downtown expecting a reservation to be honored or at least handled professionally if plans changed. Weather happens. The wedge salad is a must; it was better than any I've ever had. For entrees, I ordered the Dry Aged Rib Eye which was good (the filet looked good as well). We also ordered the Miso Glazed Black Cod which was so yummy (I will order this next time). On our neighbors recommendation, we shared the whipped potatoes (not your average mashed) for a side and the cheesecake for dessert. Although, we normally never order dessert, this one was well worth the calories! It was a beautiful December night and with the heaters, we enjoyed our patio table, but the interior is straight out of NYC - very classic and cozy. Had a business lunch today at Van Horns. It was a little confusing because google maps says they are open for lunch but the website says opens at 3pm so they should remedy that. Very nice staff, steakhouse vibes, perfect for a business lunch. The tuna sashimi was good although the cuts of fish were not uniform size. The crab cocktail was good although the waiter said it was 8 oz but I feel he must've meant 4oz because it was not 1 cup. We had a cod which was cooked well and tasted good. But there were out of asparagus as a healthier side so nothing but potatoes or mac n cheese so we added a Caesar which was good. The problem was the dozen oysters we ordered. These guys are $4 each! They delivered 4 types of 3 each. I normally smell an oyster before I eat it but after 9 good ones I let my guard down amd sure enough the 9th one was spoiled disgusting in my mouth. I spit it out right away (embarrassing at a business lunch) and we left the last 2 on the plate. I told the waiter let the kitchen know they have some bad ones and I let him know what he needed smell to see for himself. But no real apology and nothing removed from the bill. They brought a tiramisu for my friends birthday which was good. So now I sit here hours later wondering if I got salmonella or food poisoning from a $250 lunch. Google says you normally have to eat the flesh to get enough bacteria to get sick but I can still taste the nastiness in my mouth. Its easy for the shocker to do a quick smell test (there were only 4 tables occupied today) to help prevent this. If I owned the restaurant that would be part of my training. I'm honestly really disappointed writing this because I had been so excited to try VanHorn's. I made a reservation two months in advance for Valentine's Day and was truly looking forward to celebrating such a special night here. Unfortunately, the day of our reservation, I received a text saying they had to cancel because they didn't have room. I completely understand that things can happen, especially on busy holidays, but it was really disheartening to find out the day of, after planning ahead for months. What hurt more was that there wasn't any real attempt to accommodate us until I called to ask what was going on. At that point, I was told we could try to sit at the bar if there was room, or come back another day. Valentine's Day isn't really a "come back another day" kind of occasion, which is why we reserved so far in advance. I'm not upset, just genuinely saddened and disappointed. I had heard great things and was excited to experience it for the first time on a meaningful night. Our experience was just "ok". We told our waiter what we wanted and he insisted on upselling us to a tomahawk steak and other things we did not want. He wanted us to also get the porterhouse but we said no. The steak came out under done and was chewy but ok. Honestly, the sides were amazing but the place is tiny and leaves something to be desired. It's good, just not amazing like some nearby places. read more
