Van's Pig Stand is great. I'm from a BBQ heavy city and I'd like to say I know my BBQ. I wanted brisket but considering the restaurant is called Van's "Pig Stand" I felt as if I had no choice in the matter and ordered the pig sandwich. The first thing that struck me was the hostile situation I'd created when I took my sandwich out in the office. The room was quickly overcome by the smokey BBQ smell. It was heaven. I tasted the sandwich and was very pleased. It was rich and smokey. The pork was seasoned very well and wasn't over salted. Another thing that stood out to me was the moistness of this sandwich. Most pulled pork sandwiches rely heavily on BBQ sauce to make them edible. This wasn't the case here. The meat was succulent, smokey, juicy and the epitome of what good BBQ is suppose to taste like. I'm a fan and if I'm ever back in OKC I'll be stopping by again. read more

Got to go from here with my family. We ordered the $50 family pack! We got fried pickles (they were cut in wedges if anyone cares), French fries, and potato salad as our side. I'm not the kind of person who would consider themselves a bbq connoisseur, so I'm not really too picky when it comes to bbq. We had brisket and ribs as our protein. The sauces were good, the spicy sauce wasn't spicy IMO (it had a kick, but not much), the sides were good to me, and the meat was nice! I'd come back if I were craving bbq and happened to be around the area! Like I said, I'm pretty simple when it comes to bbq so you may or may not see this place as 4/5 stars. Just saying! Staff is friendly, the place is sparkling clean but the most important thing: barbecue hit the spot. Skip the pulled pork and go straight for the pork ribs, collard greens, relish (it has a really unique flavor and homemade), and a slice of carrot cake (the most moist cake ever with pineapple and raisins). Every year we get a free turkey at work. I usually do not take mine because I don't want to have to cook it. I heard some coworkers say that Van's will smoke them for a small fee, so I decided to give it a try. Drop off was very easy. They take your name and phone number, pickup date, and tag your turkey with a number so you are sure you are getting your turkey back. They do recommend you bring it in frozen, and allow them at least 4 days to thaw and smoke your bird. When I came back to pick it up, I decided to eat dinner there while I was there. I had some pulled pork and curly fries and both were absolutely amazing. I don't know what they did to make the fries so good, but there were by far the best i have ever had in my life. The pulled pork was juicy but not greasy and had an awesome flavor. The only thing I would recommend for improvement is adding in a couple more BBQ sauces, especially one with some real heat to it. Their "hot" sauce is not very hot at all. My bird came in a very nice box and was packaged in a baking bag to keep everything nice and clean. The flavor was out of this world. It had that almost-ham flavor of smoked turkey and was better than I had expected. It is moist and flavorful. I will be bringing my turkeys here from now on for sure. One small issue was that it seems their smokers must be indoors, because each time I left I noticed I had a campfire smell on my hair and clothes for hours after. This was not a big deal to me, but I can see how it might be for others. If this is a concern, try the drive thru, but don't skip going. It is the best BBQ I've had in OKC. read more

Ate at the Moore location of Van's for lunch on a Friday. This is a large location with plenty of seating. I went with the smokestack sandwich. It comes with your choice of three meats, cole slaw, and sauce. I went with pulled pork, brisket, and hot links. On the side, I had fried okra. As other yelpers note, you get a small discount when paying with cash. Usually there is an upcharge for paying with a card, so it was a nice surprise to see it applied the other way. The sandwich is large, and I went with the regular. Of the meats, I thought the brisket was the best. It is tender and had a decent bark to it. Very flavorful meat. The pork was standard, it was moist enough and there's a good amount on the bun. The hot link wasn't as hot as I would have hoped. It was my least favorite meat. The bun could not stand up to the ingredients on the sandwich, so I had to finish the last half or so with a fork. The side order of okra is large, but the breading was far too thick for me. It was so thick that I couldn't get a fork through more than one piece. I love okra, but I would not order this again. The restaurant was clean and there were several people walking around asking if diners needed anything. There was a sink outside the bathroom, which I like at places like this where your hands are likely to get dirty eating. There is ample parking and a drive through window. read more

My brisket was very dry and appeared to have been setting out too long. My wife's sausage was also dried up and appeared to have been setting out too long. I guess they consider this to be okay. I normally have no issues with the food here and enjoy it being that we now live in the north and don't really get decent BBQ that we are use to. However, this trip the meat was really dry. I ordered from the Yelp app and paid with PayPal. Very convenient. Went to the Moore location. But when I got to the window, she handed me my order and said thanks and I said...oh my drink. She said it's in the bag. I said IN the bag? She said yes. So I pulled up a little bit and opened the bag and the drink was laying on its side in the bag. It was in a drink carrier but the drink carrier cannot keep it upright in a bag. It looks as if it was just thrown in the bag. Then...once I got home with the food and opened it all up...it was two tiny ribs with a very small amount of chopped brisket. For $17.50??? Pulse the cost of the tea. The ribs hardly had meat on them. They did not taste like they did at the Van's ribs I use to go to when I was growing up and went to the original one all the time. The chopped brisket had a HUGE chunk of fat in it that took a pretty decent sized chunk of what could have been meat. The potato salad was fine. The green beans were flavorless. Like they opened a can and heated it up. And the sweet tea had a really odd flavor. Makes you wonder if the tea container is being cleaned. Overall...I was soooooo disappointed. This was the absolute worst time I've ever gotten food from Van's. Granted...it's not been the same over the years. But this was THE WORST!! And I'm sure it'll be my last. This pulled barbecue brisket is Heaven on a bun. Great portions, so flavorful and messy! In the best way. Curly fries are so tasty and you get so many of them! Such a good value for the massive amount of food you get. Love the atmosphere, also. I really appreciate the self-service idea. I think that more people my age are moving away from the constant wait staff and want more of a go-your-own-pace. I like that I can get whatever sauces and all of that at the condiments station that I want. There's no pressure to make a decision because someone is waiting over you and having to come back when you can't make up your mind. The staff is also the nicest and most helpful. This is the worst experience I have ever had at a BBQ place. First off I cannot believe they don't serve corn on the cob or even just corn. Then we ordered pulled pork sandwiches. They pork was so greasy that the bun was soggy and fell apart. They had no menu to look at. The cashier was absolutely no help at all. Like she did not even want to be there. The meat was really bland and they only offered one kind of bbq sauce. The bbq sauce the did offer was close to tasting like ketchup or even something out of a packet at a convenience store. My absolute favorite local Rib Joint. Van's has been an Oklahoma tradition since 1930 and a Sooner tradition for my family since a friend from Shawnee turned us on to them in the 90's. There are 4 Van's locations and this is the newest one. When the old location was wiped off the map by the Moore tornado in 2013 they came back in a brand new building. The atmosphere is rib joint casual and has a great Oklahoma Route 66 nostalgia. They have catering services as well as plenty of room for expansion, or large tables. The service is excellent and all you have to do is ask. Country hospitality. A family-run business you'll see two, maybe three generations of the original "Van" Vandegrift family working there. They love this place and it shows. I wonder if the two negative reviewers even bothered to let the staff know of any problems because they'll bend over backwards to fill you with prime Okie BBQ. My favorite are the dry-rub, hickory-smoked ribs. The rub is a generations-old secret (like any good rib joint) and I always eat the first rib without sauce just to get one taste with nothing but smoke and rub. The sauces are all great too. My personal favorite is the Yellow bottle (extra hot). It's not that hot, but has a nice kick. The hand-cut curly fries are my next favorite thing at Van's. NOM NOM NOM. Idaho potatoes, not some sugar-soaked fastfood russet. Tell em how you want em they are great extra crispy, but I'll take them however they come. As for the brisket, turkey, bologna, hot links and the rest. I love them all, but only eat those when I grab the full family meal. The cole slaw is cream-style (favorite) the potato slad, beans and fried okra are just like grandma's. The carrot cake is the best desert, but they also have homemade pies and cupcakes (sometimes cookies). All in all this is easily a five-star rib joint. They get it all right and if it isn't, just let them know. They'll make it right. By the way, this review is totally biased. The ribs are hit or miss, but they're usually a bit crispy and overcooked. Other meats are average, everything just always seems to be a little overdone. The sides are good, French fries are awesome. However... how can you not have Mac and cheese at a BBQ joint??? Cmon, that's a sin. Prices are a little high, but they do run some good sandwich specials. We eat here quite a bit when they mail out the BOGO rib dinners, otherwise we stick with sandwiches because the ribs are small and crisp, and just not worth the price without the coupon. The food was really only about 3.5 stars, but the staff and environment were just great. The lady taking our saw that we didn't immediately know what we wanted -- she asked if this was our first time here and we told her that we were visiting from the Dallas area. She wen't over the top to tell us everything they have and she brought over a couple other workers there to welcome us. Between the 4 in our group, we shared a variety of the offerings -- pig sandwich, sliced beef, the 'special of the day' (I think it was a Ruben?) and a kids mac-n-cheese meal. We even got an extra side of smoked sausage. Everything was hot and fresh. Drink selections were great. A+++ atmosphere. Prices were surprisingly cheap. Their combos were $7 and I'd been happy paying $8/ea. The only reason I give the food 3.5 stars is because BBQ is so subjective to everyone's tastes. They did have 3 different levels of heat for the sauce, but they were only in squirt bottles you took to your table -- I wanted a side of sauce in a cup from their warmers instead. I am not a pork eater so I was a little worried when my husband suggested going for lunch. But I was pleasantly surprised to find out they do other meats as well. Chicken, beef and pork. We came because my husband wanted the Cuban sandwich. It is not on their regular menu but is a special every once in awhile. They don't serve at this time but they will in January. We will be back. I had the BBQ beef sandwich and potato salad! Yum My husband had the ribs, beans and potato salad. He said Yum On the downside for us personally: the BBQ sauce we had was a little vinegary (we didn't ask if they had a different type) and they serve Hunts ketchup. I'm a Heinz fan.
