I came here without an appointment on the holiday weekend before Christmas and they were able to seat me, which was amazing! I got a gel manicure and although I came in for a regular pedicure, they were able to convince me to get a gel pedicure ;) It was worth it. I am deducting a star because they did not have 2 of the colors that I asked for (giving a star back because the lady who did my nails got creative and mixed some colors to give me something close to what I was hoping for) and also because overall, seems like they could have done a little better with the maintenance of the place. There are also clearly a lot of regulars that came in after me but were getting more attention (i.e. would you like something to drink, what colors, etc.) but I guess that's fair when you have loyal customers. Will definitely be back and highly recommend! read more

I've been seeing Nancy at Varnish Lab in Playa Vista for about 4 years now, and I can't recommend her enough! She always does a fantastic job--her attention to detail is incredible, and my nails always come out looking perfect. She's so talented with designs and can do just about anything I ask for. From start to finish, this was one of the worst and most uncomfortable salon visits I've ever had. The receptionist was rude, and the attitude carried through to the nail techs as well. I had three different people working on my hands with no explanation or consistency. I came in for a hard gel manicure and was burned on every single finger during the curing process, despite repeatedly expressing my pain and pulling my hands away, the tech just laughed like it was a joke. To make things worse, I clearly asked for square-shaped nails and was given coffin shape instead. read more

So I shown up an hour or two hours early before they closed. As they close at 7:30pm. I was a walk-in client because it was my first time being there. I wanted someone to do my nails before the day of the party, but no one couldn't or wanted too. Finally I had Sean doing my nails, he is very cool and funny. I went in and had a service done by Paula. I have seen her for year's. I have seen her for years She was absolutely amazing. Knowledgeable, concerned about the health of my nails, and unbelievably artistically talented. The icing on the cake of the service is she provides a quote to me before we even started. I've been coming to Varnish since moving to the area in October. Tommy and Tran deliver the best service, and nails each and every time. I actually really look forward to seeing them every couple weeks. I can tell the techs that work here really work towards relationship building with their clients which I'm sure it's one of the many reasons I see so many familiar faces every time I come. I don't usually review nail salons right after an appt, but WOW!! I had such a good experience here. I booked with Tommy and he bodied my nails. So cute. Snow helped with my dip take off and she was also so sweet! I was in and out quick, everyone was great, and my nails look amazing. My only gripe (and reason for 4 stars) is the price. Their website is "down" and prices are not posted up front. So, when my total came to over $100 for a Gel-X set, I was shook. Apparently, a gel-x set with gel polish starts at $75. Which is insane. I also don't know where the other $30 came from? The unicorn dust he added to my nails was amongst the other colors and did not have a notice that it was extra. Even so, $25+??? I will update this review to see how the nails hold up, but price transparency is super important. After calling, I learned: Dip- $55 and up without tips, $65 and up with Gel X- $55 and up, $75 and up with gel polish read more

Incredibly disappointed with the Gel X manicure I received two days ago. It was rushed and you can see my full nail underneath. For $93 I expected more. I went back the next day and they were unable to offer anything for the botched service even when I was told they would reach out via text. Also, FYI, they will take advantage of you and nickel and dime you for everything. I was charged an extra $5 for the nail length! I've never been charged extra for the nail extension. They come pre-cut in short, medium, and long so why are they charging extra?! Full breakdown: Gel X: $55, gel polish: $20, removal of previous Gel X: $8, matte polish: $5, and length: $5. They are too many other salons that won't up charge you and do a much better job. read more

I'm typically a silent yelp girlie but I had to share. I've been coming to this salon for years now. The service is great, the environment is clean, and the staff is super sweet and welcoming. I've been getting hard gels over a year now and have never been happier. Please make sure to go see Tommy! He's skilled in every area and thing you could want. Very bad service, would never go back or recommend. Nail technician kept on reminding me how busy she was and made time just for me. For charging 130 dollars for nail paint(nothing extra), of course you have to make time. If you breathe it's 20 dollars extra! No input from their side they just want to get it done with. I've been to Varnish Lab twice and seen Ken both times, he is a wonderful nail tech and I am going to continue coming here to see him. About a month and a half ago, I had gone to a differt salon I trusted to get a gel x manicure and nail art for my birthday. It came out really bad and I haphazardly searched for another salon to fix what happened and came across Varnish Lab. They were able to see me immediately and help. Ken was very kind and was able to get me a new look on my nails with the limited time available that I loved. I just went back today and was happy to get Ken again! After my second session, I noticed that the hair grows back much slower and a whole lot "fine-er" .. not sure that's a word but hopefully makes sense, lol. This location in particular (located at Howard Hughes) has been by far my favorite! I like to call and make my appointments and the front desk is always helpful and accommodating. The wax specialists are always so kind, and are also very accommodating. I can always count on them for a fun and light conversation to distract me during the service, lol. I have stubborn area that can be easily missed so if there is ever an instance when I ask for them to take a second look, they ALWAYS graciously oblige. Testament to their comment to ensure thoroughness. If you're considering a self care splurge, this is the place to be! :)

I will never go back to this place cus I got my nails done and it took so long and this guy clearly didn't know what he was doing and then he told me the design was too hard and he couldn't do it because the photo was fake and it was a sticker but that's not true and he was just gaslighting me so anyway he made me pick another design and I picked this swirly pattern and it shouldn't have been that hard but he could barely even do that he did such a bad job and I couldn't believe his incompetence I tried to communicate with him and asked him to fix certain things and he would just tell me it was fine and then they charged me $70 for the manicure like around that price i don't remember exactly I know it was expensive though for a gel manicure on natural nails anyway I said I cannot possibly pay for this cus the nails r so bad they refused to give me a refund and said they'd only refund the design part which was like $15 or something and the design was the entire thing like it was stripes with a clear background it was not hard and not worth the price and so ugly I literally started crying cus I felt so uncomfortable and the lady at the desk then spoke to the man who did my nails in another language so idk what she said but then he responded angrily and stormed off and made a scene and I just wanted to leave so badly but she convinced me this other man could do my nails and do the original design I wanted but I'd have to wait for him to be done in like an hour so I was at that place for hours even after they closed and this time the new man doing my nails was nice and kept asking if it was ok and the heart design was uneven asf but I just wanted to leave at that point so I just said everything was ok and then they charged me more for this new design on top of the original price for the other nails and since that experience I have never gotten my nails done professionally again it has been four years at this point since this happened and I was fourteen at the time I'm pretty sure the gaslighting and the awful service occurred because they knew they could get away with it cus I was a child with no parent there and since I was so afraid to ever get my nails done again I ended up becoming a nail tech myself and now have my own clients and sell press ons online that's how bad this place was it changed the course of my life lol I'm writing this review now because back then I was so upset I never wanted to think about this place again but yelp just recommended this place to me so I thought I'd share my experience I just can't believe they made me pay so much after the awful experience I had and it sucks cus I liked that place before that and had good experiences prior but that one place just traumatized me and I know it's not that hard to do nails especially the designs I was asking for like maybe the heart design was hard but the strips were so easy a child could do it my nail page is @caidys_nails so u can see I know what I'm talking abt read more

I am sad to see so many one star reviews on here because I have never had a bad experience and I have tried almost everyone on their staff. For those complaining about having to wait to get serviced when there is only 3 chairs being used, well, look a little deeper and you'll find that staffing a huge store is probably harder than you can imagine. Especially if you are trying to staff it with people that speak English. So calm down people! Give them a chance. Just because you have to wait 10 minutes, doesn't mean they aren't trying their hardest to take care of you. I mean, I've waited for 20 minutes because sometimes things run behind and they've always offered me a drink so I can't complain. As for cuts on skin, I found out that I was allergic to the cuticle remover they use and I see a lot of these reviews with pictures of exactly what happened to me. It's not the staff cutting you up that far and removing chunks of skin. It's just not possible unless your technician is blind maybe? It's an allergic reaction!! This is not the fault of Varnish Lab. Some people are just more sensitive. I have asked them to note it in my profile and not use that remover on me during services. I have had at least 10 pedicures since and I have not had the skin irritations since. The prices are perfect for what you get. This isn't the normal salon and I much rather have a modern and clean salon than an old grimy place where they are just turning people out. I love Varnish Lab and their staff! My personal recommendations: Tammy: if you want a harder handed technician. Ima and Connie: If you want the most beautiful acrylics and hard gels. Especially hard gels!!! Sunny: If you want a little reflexology touch with your pedi. They don't offer it on the menu but she's just got the touch. Caroline: If you want a moment to yourself. First time here and never again. I gave this place one star, start of with reception the guy was very rushing me to sit down while I was picking out the color then I went to the restroom he even follow me and knock on my door just to get me seated. Rude!!! Second the person who did my nails SANDY was giving me the attitude where I have to pay to clean my old polish off which is fine for me but why mention it anyway. How can you start working on my nails with out cleaning it! make no sense! She is not good at all poor line and bad customer service I did the powder dipping. I told her it was my first time doing the dipping which she was very careless and left me at the station. She didn't check on me after she finished at all. Didn't even clean the powder off of my fingers. I asked her why is it so messy she just said you go watch your hand while the person next to me got full service hot towel cleaning her hand off after but I have to walk to the restroom to clean my hand. I decided to leave this review just because I want sandy to know that she did a very bad job and she should improve her customer service and her attitude. Watch out guys go see lily never sandy!!!
