First impression and customer service experience I visited Hana Nails in Marina del Rey while checking out local nail salons. I've lived in the Marina for 15 years and am looking for a new place, so I stopped in to get a feel for the salon. What immediately turned me off was how unwelcoming the interaction felt. Before I could even finish saying I was looking for a nail salon, her demeanor made me feel like I was bothering her. It wasn't a friendly "we don't allow non-customers to use the restroom," but a dismissive, cold response with no effort to make me feel welcome or acknowledge I could be a potential customer. I understand restroom policies and am not upset about being told no--it was the way it was communicated. The interaction felt cold and judgmental. There are plenty of salons where you feel welcomed right away. I can't speak to the services, but based on this first impression, I wouldn't return. read more

Unfortunately this place isn't what it once was. Once it changed ownership it has been going down. I went on a Friday afternoon. It was not packed but all techs were busy. I was asked if I could wait but wasn't given a time. I assumed it would be 15-20 min wait. It ended up being an hour wait and the tech that ended up helping me wasn't even on site. He was just starting his shift. Additionally it was a male tech and I was not asked if I was ok waiting 60 mins and not asked if I was okay having a male tech for my pedicure. They still didn't have someone available to do my manicure so the owner who was also the receptionist and cashier did my manicure. This ended up being 2 hours long from beginning to end. Because the owner was the receptionist and also the cashier she was extremely distracted having to walk away so many times and upon returning kept forgetting what finger she was working on. This added to the length of time I was there and unfortunately this was not a relaxing experience for me. Also, all of the OPI color options are outdated or completely used and not properly maintained and cleaned. They look like they are refilled and do a very poor job maintaining them. Additionally no one is actively cleaning. Lots of used towels everywhere. Also there was trash on the floor and all employees including the owner just walked over and around it. No one concerned for how messy the floor or anything is. The restroom needs a good power washing. Instead of using the chairs basin for the pedicure they put a small basin that looks old and used. Also I'm not sure how clean anything is. Overall lacking a lot of maintenance and upkeep. Also it's been 7 days and my gel mani is already peeling. Today I went in to remove gels on fingers and have polish removed off the toes. I asked for natural buff with callous removal no paint for today . Without asking me, the lady named Denise , instead of using solution with foil to dissolve gel , she impatiently took out the NAIL DRILL and drilled my finger nail down to unacceptable thinness. I was not happy she drilled my natural nails with no regard, no consideration, no communication, no care, no apologizes. In addition I have been coming here many years since way before Covid. I went here for a much needed self care and self love. I had a manicure and pedicure done by two different people while seated in a massage chair. Talking about royal treatment haha. My cuticles were cleaned, nails reshaped, feet scrubbed and hands massaged. I opted to a gel polish and so far, it has been long lasting. Chloe did my nails, and after discussing my concerns about regular gel not lasting on me (since I've been getting my nails done for years), we agreed on a gel builder. The results were 10/10--the set lasted over four weeks without issues. One thing to note is that cuticle removal is an extra charge, but Chloe kindly did it for me for free. I loved her work so much that I booked another appointment with her two months later. This time, I chose two coats of Funny Bunny with a chrome powder finish (builder gel again), and I was pleased with the results. If you would like to be treated in an inhumane manner this is your nail salon. I have been a frequent customer since 2010, when I had my nails for my wedding done here. I noticed over the years that the business etiquette and ethics started to shift in an unfavorable direction. In the last year there has always been hesitation for a technician to assist me with services. The polish is usually stiff and there is a lack of variety for regular polish. We have been questioned about our bank cards and asked if they were real. We have a very popular credit union so we didn't understand the rationale behind the interrogation. I would like to add that I am always being polite, courteous, respectful and always leave an excellent tip. I experienced the absolute worst treatment. I came in at the same time as my sister. She was seated immediately and serviced immediately. My sister and I do not appear as the same ethnicity. I received a chair next to her 5 minutes later. I sat in the chair waiting for 10 minutes before there was even water in the makeshift rectangle plastic bin, since they no longer use the chairs directly. I placed my feet in the water in the plastic bin and it was luke warm. Another lady came in and asked for a pedicure and she was serviced immediately. I was still waiting for a technician. I stated to my sister that I was flabbergasted because I was here before she arrived. As of now my water was cold and they were about to polish my sister's nails. A technician was still no where in sight. This is when I decided that my money was no longer needed nor appreciated at this establishment. I now understand the decline in business. Please go where you are valued as a customer and receive quality service. You do not deserve to be abandoned as a customer. Neglectful customer service is not acceptable. Yesterday, I witnessed extremely disrespectful treatment of a woman who walked into the nail shop at the same time I did. I was seated immediately, and she sat next to me just seconds later. As soon as I was seated, a technician began working on my nails. She, however, waited several minutes before a technician came over and simply gave her a tub of water to soak her feet. She continued waiting for more than 10 minutes while I was already more than halfway through my pedicure. We both noticed that another technician started working on a different woman who had arrived after her. It was clear she was being treated unfairly. Rightfully upset, she chose to leave. No one should ever be treated this way. In the past, I had observed that certain women received different treatment, but I wondered if I was being overly sensitive. I have been going to Hana Nails for over six years. I went last week and my regular pedicurist, "Jane," not her real name, was absent, so I chose Kristy (sp?). Well, I will never choose Kristy again. She nicked both of my big toes. I doused it with rubbing alcohol and an antiobiotic ointment. It was very painful. That evening, my left toe was untouchable. The pain was excruciating. A few days later, my right toe began to throb and has not stopped. I am afraid to remove the polish for fear Kristy may have given me a nail fungus. I've been to this salon twice the first time I was yelled at for not having cash tip even though I told the technician before she began the service and she was agreeable to me tipping on my debit card. Today I was there and after I got my manicure I had a $20 bill and I wanted it to be broken into $5 so I could tip my nail tech. I have been coming here since high school, but recently I have decided that I cannot come here anymore. I have been disappointed with the quality I am left with each time. I will not name people because I do not want to risk anyone their job. I had a dip manicure last week with a french tip, and the nail tech, first of all, said that the french tip was too hard (??), and sighed a lot when I asked her to make it a little thinner. She also told me that they did not look nice the way that I had asked for them and kept pressuring me to do other things. I then had to go through asking her to reshape them, and she just was not delivering, so I stopped asking and just let her do what she wanted (after maybe 4-5 times with her scoffing in between). The nail job also wasn't flush across the whole nail--it mounded up near the tips. I came back this week to get them removed because I was just hating them. The edges were not clean and the shape was just wrong, along with my nail looking like it went upward at the end. I asked for just the dip off *completely*, just my real nail, and for a regular manicure. I had to ask her several times to take off more, because there were still layers of dip left. I came here because I didn't want to have any layers left like what happens at home when I do it myself. I also asked her for a particular shape, which she did not accomplish either. She did not remove all of the layers of dip, and now at home I am just upset that I spent $47 and tipped 20%. That's not what I'm looking for in a nail salon experience. I am so sad about this because I have loved Hana for over 10 years, but paying a lot of money doesn't always mean you will have a good job done. I had to go home and reshape and file down the remaining dip from my nails, because it just looked so bad, even from afar. Photos will be attached from the moment I left Hana. I also do regular mani pedis here in between when I don't do them myself at home. PROS: - This place has outdoor service during Covid and has taken all of the necessary precautions to keep customers safe. There is also plexi glass to separate clients and staff from each other. - We were able to make a same-day appointment. - Amazing pedicure! CONS: - Also got a gel manicure and the lady was rushing so fast that it didn't leave great results. I asked for square shape, and a lot of my nails ended up looking like round, bubble shaped with crooked edges. The nail polish application was not very precise either and some of it ended up on my skin. Overall it looks a little messy vs. a clean cut manicure. She seemed to be in such a hurry which made me a bit scared to speak up and also made me uneasy as the customer. Not the most relaxing experience and not worth the price to be honest :( - They only accept cash tips. However if you do not have any cash, there is a Wells Fargo across the parking lot that you can easily walk to and access an ATM. DO NOT get a dip manicure here. At first I was happy to find Hana nails as I've been getting dip manicures in the valley and this place is close to my home. My first manicure was great and lasted 4 weeks. My second dip manicure from them started chipping off in less than a week! I went back and they did redo it for me. However the manicurist was not happy about it and when she removed her prior work she was trying to blame me. I have been getting dip manicures for almost a year and have never had a problem nor have they ever chipped. This time when she used the electric file to remove the old dip she kept sanding my actual nail so now they are much weaker. I also have square nails and she made them oval without asking. Going on to my cuticles she used the electric file again and I flinched several times as she was burning/cutting my skin. No apology. When I showed her several blood spots she just dapped on some disinfectant like it was normal. By now I just wanted to get out of there. I did not pay for the manicure but I did tip here. Six days later my dip is chipping off again! I don't know if they use inferior product or if this operator does not know how to properly apply the product. In any case I will not be going back, do not recommend you go and now hoping my very thin soft nails recover! read more

I've been going to Hana nails for 11-12 years. Way back when Thui and Hana were around it was consistently 5*. These days (spring summer 2022) it's been leaving a lot to be desired. I used to have gel manicures consistently every 2-4 weeks. They'd occasionally last 3-4 if you ignored the regrowth at the base. Lately with my gel manicures I've been getting chips on day 3-4. It's not acceptable. It's happened at least 4 times in the last 4 months. I've said something about it but the new receptionist/host said it's my body and not the polish. That not even stating the jagged unfinished gritty edges on the tips of the nails or the air bubbles from the bad polish jobs recently. Or the uneven /slanted tips of nails and toes. It's disappointing. The staff (not all) isn't super hospitable and sometimes rude. I've been through rushed services recently. One of the manicurists consistently cuts my cuticles and doesn't seem to care. They started. to use drills on the nails to file off gel and look at you funny because it's hurting your nail. It's poor practice to use the drill for this on natural nails. Do not request detailed art nails or ombré nails, this is not the place for that. They told me they could and spent a half hour dragging black ink with alcohol through pink to do a pink black ombré that ended up looking like squid ink and just wiped off and restarted to a solid color in the end. The host/receptionist recently unsold me to gel x and I've been getting those. Those have not been chipping and seem to last a while. When I went in to get gel x fill, she looked at them and said-- no, those don't look like gel x, those look like acrylic. Lady, you are the on who sold this to me 2x now. WTH. They sat me in a chair and as I waited I was so annoyed that I left. From observation? I've noticed they are not great at keeping appointments. Other people, while I've been there, had waited 20 minutes or more past their appointment time. Or a lady made an appointment for mani n pedi at the same time but they only did her toes and then she had to wait for her nails. She was pissed because she only had a certain amount of time. The tech was not only rushing but super sloppy. She even left acrylic on the side of my finger. The nails are crooked and slanted. My nails look like a thick bubble, nowhere near an almond shape. If you ask them to fix it, they will charge you extra because they say "it's already nice! " They don't listen and don't care! I stopped going to this salon but decided to take another go as it's close to my house. However, this last visit made me realize why I stopped going in the first place. First off, I went there without an appointment and they accommodated which I appreciated. Until I realized the nail tech working on my nails had extreme warts and they were working on my nails without gloves. I would've been completely okay with waiting or them saying they were booked. I could clearly see they were busy. The person was nice but if you have something like warts and you're working with the public you should take precautions. She also keeps my brows & face nice and clean with regular gentle waxing while I am here. My brows always look natural and clean just as I like them.
