This is our go-to place and has been for the past 12 years. The pizzas are excellent. We get "the works" about half the time: generous, tasty toppings on a great thin-to-medium crust. The other pizzas we've tried are very good, and our favorite is the Brooklyn -- sensational! Our family likely accounts for a fair percentage of Varsity's cheesesteak sales year to year. I like the deluxe, and every once in a while I go for the buffalo chicken version. My wife is partial to their turkey bacon wrap, and we only recently discovered their outrageously good chicken parmesan sandwich. Onion rings and chicken wings are top flight. Varsity Pizza is a popular place as I often see a line of college kids in there. And here is why. These guys know how to cook at a price that won't kill you. I just started going there and the portions are very large, but more importantly, the tomato gravy on entrées is similar to New York, Italian restaurants. It has that nice slightly sour authentic flavor that is lacking in most places in central New Jersey in my experience. I recently had the lasagna, which was an absolutely no exaggeration- The best lasagna that I have ever had anywhere. All their dishes seem to be good so far including the pizza and the owners are very nice. I highly recommend this place either eat in or deliver. Solid pizza spot. Buffalo chicken pizza is my go to pizza here. In fact this is pretty much the only thing I buy here. It has a great balance of sauce, chicken, bread. Better than most places. The Texas fries are also good. I love that they have online ordering. My biggest complaint is pick-up is pretty sketchy during a pandemic. They have two entrances and it seems like there is always a line in both directions and people are not always physically distanced. Some people have ordered online or on the phone and some people are just placing an order and waiting for their order to be made. So this place clearly isn't my top pick. Received a mailer so decided to try it since the daughters were having a pool party/sleepover. Thought the delivery option would be ideal. Called up and ordered the x large cheese, a medium pepperoni, one order of spicy wings, and one order of regular wings. The guy taking the order seemed to be preoccupied. He did manage to blurt out, "you leaving a tip"???? I advised that I would give a tip upon delivery. The delivery arrived within the promised time of 40 minutes. Perhaps the guy taking the order just missed it despite him constantly saying, "uh huh what else" after every item I ordered. The pepperoni pizza was the delivery nightmare...cheese and sauce spilling off of the crust like a glob of gooey ick. The cheese pizza appeared palatable. The "spicy" wings just appeared to be regular wings with crushed red pepper flakes sprinkled on. Not a big deal but not exactly what I was expecting. But again, no big deal. The girls devoured the cheese pizza and those into "spicy" went through the wings like a hot knife through butter. I had one wing and it was decent. Not in the league of Chuckles (using another primarily pizza place as reference) but passable for a pizza place. I cannot comment on the taste of the cheese pizza but if the clean plates of the girls ranging from ages 8 to 11 are any indication it must have been good (enough). I have been going to Varsity since I was a child. Their pizza has ruined me for all other pizza. I love the cheese-sauce ratio on the thinner crust. It is always delicious. They also have a California pizza (veggies with no cheese) that we add hot peppers to and it is phenomenal. My brother says they have the best buffalo-chicken pizza ever. He won't get it from anywhere else. They have recently renovated and added some high top tables. It looks really nice inside. There is also a Baskin Robbins/Dunkin Donuts attached so you can go for pizza and get ice cream for dessert! This is the best pizza in the area, and Varsity is reliable and consistent. The crust is a nice blend of crispy on the outside and slightly chewy on the inside so your bite goes clean through the crust. The sauce is excellent, about as good as anything I've had in North Jersey or NY, and is a great foundation for the rest of their dishes and subs. I've visited this place many times, but I don't think I'll go there again after today. I was made to wait particularly longer than usual for a few take out slices, and when I asked about it I was told that they had "forgotten about it" and were going to put a few more in. When the girl at the register went to talk to the guy making pizza, I overheard him angrily saying "I called out for him, no one came up." I didn't want to start an argument in the middle of the restaurant, but I had been sitting at the table right next to the counter, so he couldnt have possibly called for me. After a few minutes, the cashier was still trying to get slices for me, and he stopped her, taking the slices she was bringing to me for another take out order. Then he threw a few slices into my box, and she brought it over. When I got home, I realized they hadn't even take the time to cut my slices apart, so what I was left with was a huge slab of pizza that I needed to cut apart myself, which was cold, soggy, and all around gross. As I said, I WAS a regular customer, but they're going to have to do without my business after this. I'll go to one of the other 10 FAR less crowded, cheaper places near my home. read more

My family and I have been coming to Varsity's for years and the past few years it has gone down hill. For example, the buffalo wings got smaller & more expensive and the wait time for delivery or even dining in is terrible (just got food delivered and it was 45 minutes after they said they would be here). The pie was burnt and cold, the fries were ice cold and greasier than McDonalds, and the chicken tenders were nothing but breading and burnt as well. I get the gluten free pizza, which is really good compared to other gluten free pizza's I've had. However, its STUPID expensive, especially because no toppings come on it, you have to add them for $1.50 each, so my pizza with NO CHEESE and 3 toppings is $19.00, they wouldn't even let me sub one of the toppings for the cheese.
