The people who work here are very kind, and I wish them all the success in the world. I also really do love the flavor of the burnt ends for the burnt and burrito. I also got a churro one time and it was great along with their iced Horchata latte. My only gripe that I hope they'll take into account as a local who frequents this place at least several times a month, I do feel as if they could put more effort into putting the burritos together. these are very very small burritos for $13 and they are almost always put together in the most haphazard and chaotic fashion you can imagine. it's never really wrapped appropriately. the cheese is all pushed to the bottom while the meats all at the top. if they could put in a little more effort to putting the burritos together nicely and making sure that cheese is melted, etc. I think it would sting a little bit less to pay $13 for such a small meal. I know that they are very busy with a constant line out the door almost every single day, but I think the price point warrants a little bit more effort on their end. read more

Finally tried the famous Vato! Ohhhh was it WORTH IT! A beautiful mid modern restaurant located in park slope. They have ample seating and even an outdoor space. Service was friendly and also fast! The tortilla was bomb, and the flavors were out of this world that we wish we got 2! We tried the bean and cheese burrito, as well as their best seller the verde! So simple, but so so good! I've tried the Verde burrito which is braised pork should in salsa verde with potatoes and it was delicious. It's savory heavy for sure, the pork was tender and juicy and the salsa verde was spicy but not too spicy, y'know? This morning we had some time to spare so my husband and I stopped in to grab some breakfast. We got the burnt ends egg & cheese which has hickory-mesquite smoked brisket, soft scrambled eggs and cheddar cheese. This one was not my favorite because I'm not a big fan of bbq/smoky flavors. If you add some salsa verde on it, the acidity helps to mute the smokiness of the brisket so I found that to be more tasty. I like the addition of eggs and cheese to this to make it more of a breakfast meal but the soft scrambling of the eggs with the brisket makes the whole burrito quite soggy and hard to pick up and eat without squeezing the juices out and all over the place. Would like it better if the eggs were cooked a little more just so that the whole tortilla wouldn't sag. The seating in the back is minimal and I particularly like their wide and comfortable wooden chairs. The concrete looking tables are cool but not rough and very smooth. Staff was nice and the pastry display was minimalist. Wish they offered regular conchas because I'm not into yuzu. But I intend to go back and try their other pastries though. The cinnamon roll and cookie looked really good. Based on what I've tasted, Vato is overhyped for what it currently offers. The food is delicious, but the menu is oversimplified with basic offerings, and the burritos are pricey at $12 to $13 each. Another reviewer mentioned they were slapped with an automatic tip to their order which is wild to even begin with. The staff are nice and you can tell that the whole place is clean and spotless. The chefs are presentable and look like they mean business. It's a well oiled machine, and I hear it can get insanely busy with lines out the door and down the block. I stopped at Vato for a couple breakfast burritos for my friend and I. We both ordered the verde and I had a hibiscus iced tea (Jamaica) which was perfect because it was a hot day in Brooklyn. I loved the icing and felt it was the perfect ratio. There's tables in the back and some outdoor seating as well. I came here on a Thursday afternoon. There was no line but it was busy inside. I found the hostess to be helpful when it came to deciding which burritos to order. I got the burnt eggs and cheese and found the meat to be slightly dry. The eggs were good but the cheese wasn't really melted. The beach and cheese had a similar issue with the cheese but tasted good. The favorite was the verde- pork shoulder, potatoes and salsa verde. Pork was juicy and tender. They have two salsas to choose from a green and red one I got a Jamaica agua Fresca which was pretty small and could use a bit more sugar. The cinnamon roll may have been the best thing I had here. It's more of a tangy and tart cream cheese like frosting which I like but may not be for everyone. I found the staff to be nice. Seating is first come first serve. Got a late lunch carry-out at Vato: 2 burritos, one Verde and one Burnt Ends (I don't know why, that's just what it's called). Both were delicious-- Burnt Ends had egg and cheese in it so could be a good morning choice and the verde was juicy, with a tang and delicious! It's a small place, with open kitchen consuming most of the space. Down a long aisle to the back it looked like there were a couple of tables, but my order was to go so I didn't venture back. The brick and mortar is slim with the register/ordering system at the front when you walk in, followed by a pick up area, then a few tables for sitting. We managed to snag a table - it seemed like many were taking their orders to go. I ordered the burnt ends egg and cheese, my boyfriend got the verde, and we split a guava donut. The burritos are reasonably portioned - not too big and not too small. My burnt ends egg and cheese was a bit too egg forward the first several bites, but once I got to the meat and cheese it was delicious. The brisket was so smoky and I personally loved that the cheddar wasn't too melty! The verde was the star between the two. Soupy braised pork deliciousness. Messier, but worth it. Vato only opened a couple of weeks ago but it's already so beloved in the neighborhood that you can find lines snaking down the block from when they open at 7am. I rallied a group to go there on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, hoping to take advantage of the fact that many folks are out of town. While there were no lines, visiting at 1pm on a Saturday was naive as they were indeed out of all burritos. We did try all pastries that sounded good to us, which included the guava donut, concha with yuzu cream, and cinnamon roll with cream cheese frosting. Cinnamon roll w/cream cheese frosting gets a 4 from me-- the frosting is solid, as is the frosting to roll ratio. The dough of the roll itself was too underbaked and had no textural interest. Guava donut gets a 3 from me-- The crisp of the doughnut was nice but there isn't enough glaze on this so the flavor is incredibly subtle. Not memorable considering the many doughnut shops and bakeries in the area. The concha with yuzu cream gets a 3.5 from me-- Conchas are often dry, but this one was fresh and the yuzu cream injected a nice flavor burst into the pastry. It reminds me a lot of a bolo bao you'd find at a Chinese bakery, but I don't think it's worth the prices they're charging. I'll have to return for burritos and give a full review. read more

Vato has been getting a lot of buzz since opening, and I'm glad I finally made it over. I was a little intimidated by the opening-time lines, so I took a chance on a chilly weekday and stopped in around 11:30am. It was already packed, but I lucked out with only a short wait and was pleasantly surprised that the only thing sold out was the cinnamon roll. I ordered enough for two to share: the verde pork burrito, the burnt ends egg and cheese burrito, plus a concha, an old-fashioned donut, and an agua fresca. The pastries were solid. I especially liked the yuzu curd and guava glaze. The real standouts were the burritos though. The house-made tortillas are beautiful, and while the burnt ends burrito was tasty, the verde pork really stole the show with its warmth and texture. Don't skip the self-serve salsas in the back; they add great depth and heat. I'm not here to comment on the food today, but I encountered a very disturbing situation at this popular spot. I ordered breakfast to-go, and my invoice totaled $38.12. When I paid with my phone, their screen didn't show any tip options, and I wasn't asked for one. However, after receiving the paper receipt, I noticed on my phone that I was charged $43.37, an extra $5.25. (Please see the pictures) When I questioned the cashier, they simply said, "Oh, that's the tip." I replied that tipping should be my choice, not a hidden fee. Eventually, I watched them reverse the charge. I understand that the restaurant industry is facing tough times, but charging customers without their knowledge is nothing short of theft. When this place first opened there was a line out the door every day. Out of curiosity, had to come and check it out. They have both burritos and pastries with a specialty coffee they make with oranges(?) that dont need any milk or really any sweeteners. As tempting as the dessert looked, I came in to try their burnt ends burrito. When you walk in the kitchen is open and right at the front so you can see them make everything. The shop is very small with limited seating but does have outdoor space for the warmer months. Food is great, everything's cooked perfectly and it's all perfectly seasoned. My favorite was the burnt ends. I'd come back to have it again. I'm giving a 3 star because on the big menu on the wall which is the only menu I was able to see while waiting in line there are no descriptions. So when it was my turn to order I politely asked what protein was in the Verde burrito, because I didn't care about the others, I was just gonna order them. The guy said "the descriptions on the menu right there friend" (not in a friendly tone) he pointed next to the cash register, which is I guess my bad for not seeing it and just wanting to order quickly to get the line moving. (My anxiety when there's a long and I quickly want to get out and order to not hold up the line) anyways, it was his attitude that rubbed me the wrong way. But I still ordered 8 burritos & a cinnamon roll. And then when my number was called they gave me only 3, I asked if there's more and she thought I was asking about my cinnamon roll which comes out where they make coffee so she pointed and said over there. You can watch everything being cooked behind a long counter and all the staff are super friendly and engaging. The tortillas were pretty incredible! I thought the egg burrito was a bit dry and unfortunately we got a pretty large fat cap in our verde burrito. Very overhyped. We tried 4 out of 5 burritos and they were not great. Only decent one was the burnt end ones. Tortillas were a bit too tick and fillings just not that tasty. This place is really a 50/50. We got there around lunch time and it took about 15/20 minutes to get in the restaurant. The breakfast/bakery options looked really good but I didn't try any and by the time I got there the one I wanted (the churro) was gone. My boyfriend ordered the Mole burrito which held up well and had a lot of good flavor! I ordered the Verde which had a lot of meat, flavor and sauce but held up for all of about two bites. My boyfriend tried mine as well and made a comment that my burrito had more meat than his. Unfortunately the end of my burrito was super oily and completely fell apart. Worth the hype! Came here on a snow day pretty early and there was no line. I ordered the brisket taco and as a Texan, my first bite took me right back home. I was also pleasantly surprised how much meat was in the taco, so there is no skimping here. Picked up a bag of their tortillas and just made a quesadilla at home 10/10, love that there is a local shop I can get fresh tortillas. I'll start by saying that the ingredients seem simple, but the way that they're meticulously paired together creates an explosion of flavor. I ordered the mushroom and a Cortado. The mushroom is more like a vegetarian option (a spin on a chorizo egg burrito) with egg cheese and some lime juice. The restaurant also has a small assortment of sauces in the back for you to choose from to pair with your food. If you appreciate good food you have to try Vato. The line out the door is for a reason, but don't worry it moves fast. When I eat out I want it to be unique, fresh, homemade, not greasy, and delicious . The burritos are all of these things. I tried the pollo mole which had the most delicious hickory smoked flavor with the right amount of kick. I also tried the bean and cheese which I liked because the ingredients were blended together. The tortillas were really light and fresh. Good portions. The burritos are not messy to eat. The vibe is really cool. Too cool for Park Slope, which I liked. Omg. Finally made it to Vato last weekend and so worth everything! The line can look intimidating but it moves super fast and is well worth it. We got the last cinnamon roll (omg so good!!) and the awesome person behind the counter slipped us a donut too (which was somehow better then the cinnamon roll!!). We got the burnt ends burrito....
