This is not Mexican. This is a burrito bar, actually little more than a stand, with a little extra. That is not to detract how amazing the burritos are. I tried two of them and have the worst hankering for a third. Believe me, I will do it. The two burritos I massacred were the shrimp and carne asada burritos. Both have AMAZING flavor (no rice, no filler), and are incredibly easy to eat. Despite their hefty appearance, they are fairly light, with good air pockets in between the meat and cheese. The burritos are loaded with beans, so be prepared to apologize for your fellow straphangers if you intend to ride the nearby F train after indulging one of these. I would give this spot a 3.5 if I could. The first time I came here I was utterly in love with the food. The burritos were incredible, I tried every flavor. Shrimp was my number one, with steak after. However, it seems like they've gotten pretty inconsistent lately. The shrimp is almost always good, but the steak is a total toss up. It can be rubbery or amazing, with no real inbetween. I'm not sure if it has to do with the cut of meat they use that day, but it's really not great when it's off. Also, while the portions are usually solid, it feels like things have started to shrink recently. Otherwise this place has good service and is a tiny little hole in the wall but you're here for the food. I wish they were more consistently good and I'd give them a 5/5. I wasn't sure what I was expecting with just a bean and cheese burrito but I'm so glad I was very pleasantly surprised by how something so simple could be executed so perfectly. The texture and flavor profile of the beans is so comforting with a tiny bit of heat from the assorted cut up jalapeños in the mixture. It's complimented well by the cheese, but huge props to the tortilla because I'm so happy that they throw it onto the grill to get a little bit of char. It seals off the burrito perfectly so all the delicious goop inside doesn't open and leak all over. I was surprised at how much I loved this burrito and cannot wait to come back to try other items on the menu! I wish this place had seating since we had to walk to whole eats to enjoy our food warm. Everything was super tasty and well made. The burritos were cooked perfectly with so much flavor and moistness. Our burritos were practically making juice. Had high hopes after hearing so many rave reviews about son del north. Unfortunately we thought it was average at best. To start off, we ordered 3 burritos. The breakfast burrito, pollo asado, and frijoles con queso. We made the mistake of not checking our order before getting home and realized they forgot our frijoles con queso burrito. Huge bummer since that was the one I was most excited to try, but that's on us for not checking. The tortilla itself on the burrito is great. Super soft and really fresh. That's about the only thing we enjoyed. The pollo asado and breakfast burritos were fine. We've had better at other places in the area. The sauce is ok. I came to Son Del North after seeing all the hype on social media, and I'm glad I did. They are known for their doughy tortillas, and I got their bean and cheese burrito with steak and pico. The place is small, but service was so fast! After ordering, it only took around 5 minutes until my food came. The burrito was great! I typically don't like bean and cheese, but this place is the exception. The bean and cheese had such a good ratio and adding the steak and pico was a game changer to add more texture. This place is legit! First of all, loved the quality of the tortilla which is hard to find in this area of the country. The chicken was super flavorful. Delicious burrito spot that makes grilled burritos without rice! I'm from SF and I've eaten many great burritos and this one was one of them. From the tortilla to all the fillings and the sauce, everything was tasty. This spot is mostly takeout with a few standing tables to eat outside. I don't know why this place why this place has 4 stars because it's 5 all the way! The menu is simple but it works. The burritos are sooo flavorful and not dry at all. They really taste homemade :) I love rice and these do not come with rice and I was really surprised that rice wasn't missed. They are made perfect as is. Definitely the best burrito I've had in a long time. The agua frescas are pretty sweet but they are delicious. Service is quick and friendly. There's no seating except for bench so this is more of a small takeout place. So glad I found this place and can't wait to visit NYC and go back for more. I popped in here as I was in the area and wanted something quick to eat. It's a tiny storefront with very limited seating (only two benches inside). The staff were friendly and I got my food quickly. They are known for their Mexican style burritos (sans rice) and have a small menu to choose from. I got the beans and cheese one and it was nicely grilled and charred on the outside. I'm sad because I reallyyyy wanted to give this place 5 stars and was really hoping it was going to be my go to burrito spot in NYC. For some background: Im from Baja California- like on the border of Mexico type of place so I have already come to terms with the fact that I won't be getting Mexican food 1) as good as from there or 2) the same style being that the Mexican food I grew up eating is regionally so much different than the Mexican food here in the city. HOWEVER, I saw this place open up and was overjoyed to see that they specialized in Sonoran-style Mexican food which is exactly the type of Mexican I grew up eating!! The tortilla is amazing and I love love love that tehre are no rice or other fillers like a majorirt of places here. With that being said, I agree with a few other reviews that some of the pieces of meat were really fatty/chewy? I don't mind that here and there but it got to a point that it was like evry other bite and it began to gross me out a little bit. Overall, the burrito was still solid and it really filled me up. The other reason I didn't give 5 starts is because the service was really slow and they only had 3rd parties set up for pick up and so the prices were marked up by about $2 (which I totally understand) so I just went in person since I was around the corner. I noticed that some people who had ordered after me got theirs first and when I went in to inquire they all of a sudden had my burrito ready about a minute later. Easily the best burrito I've had in NYC so far (and I've been looking). The owner is a winner from Chopped the cooking show, and apparently the tortillas are flown in from Mexico? Well, it shows, as the tortilla was nice and hefty, definitely has like a lard-type texture to it and was so chewy and pillowy, I've NOT had burritos like this outside of the west coast or mexico. The filling was delicious too, and the carne asada was so tenderly cooked, everything was packed with flavor I couldn't help but inhale it entirely. I came to Son Del North on Sunday around 5pm and there wasn't a line. The inside is incredibly small with just a couple of benches. There are two standing tables outside but on a cold day, there isn't really an indoor spot to eat your food. In terms of the food, I got a pollo asado burrito which came with a yellow sauce. I don't know what the sauce was but it was pretty good. The burrito itself was ever so slightly salty but packed a punch. It was filling but without rice, I didn't exactly feel stuffed after eating the whole burrito. I've been gradually winding my way through a Bolaño epic, and what with all that talk of the mysticism of the Sonoran desert and the fictional city of Santa Teresa, I started feeling a calling to try one of NYC's few (perhaps lone) purveyors of the types of burritos associated with the region. The good? I loved the crispy tortilla, which in many ways reminded me of a tzongyo bing. I ordered the beans and cheese variety, with simple flavors that emphasized the tortilla. The less good? After half a burrito the fillings started to taste a bit bland, and the cream-based chutney provided on the side did little to provide variety. If you're a fan of burritos, this place is a must try. Biting into one gave me a bit of nostalgia. It reminded me of the burritos my grandma used to make in Mexico. The flour tortilla is incredibly thin and soft, yet sturdy enough to hold all the ingredients. The steak is hearty, well-seasoned, and delicious. Its a great all-around burrito. It's easy to see why there's always a line here. The menu is small, focusing on what they do best, burritos. I have now also had the shrimp burrito and the bean and cheese burrito and can say the Vegan chorizo cauliflower is my favorite. The shrimp burrito has great shrimp flavor, but it is almost too shrimpy for me, I guess I need the intermediary of rice to really enjoy a shrimp burrito. The bean and cheese burrito tastes great, but it feels like you are doing something very wrong. The Vegan chorizo slaps every time, especially with the spicy SDN dipping sauce included with the order. Most recently I also tried the chips and guac; the chips are homemade and you can really tell, the flavor is great and very corn heavy. The guac was only okay for me, I prefer a more chunky unadulterated guac, but I know some people like the smooth style, so I'll chalk it up to a matter of personal taste. read more

I saw Sonoran and being an expat from PHX, I had to try this place. One asada, one chicken. Both were solid. Asada was good quality (no fat or gristle). Salsa (red) was the highlight for me, and their green sauce packs a nice punch. Why a 3? They slap the burritos on a grill. Why they even attempt this is beyond me. Just let the burrito be! The effect? They achieve grill marks. The bad part is a very good tortilla now has char marks that detract from the filling. I don't like burned tortillas or their aftertaste. I was honestly not impressed with this burrito. I got the shrimp filling and the shrimp was definitely overcooked and had a weird texture. I don't need rice in my burrito, but without something else, it felt just like a huge pile of mush. Some avocado or something else would really help break up the texture. Flavor wise, it was ok.
