I went to VCA McClave and saw Dr. Galleet Khouban on 5/2/21 for my cat, who had been eating less and urinating blood over the previous week. First and foremost, Dr. Khouban is the consummate professional - she is THE vet that you want for your furry member of the family. Having a sick pet is one of the most worrisome and stressful positions that a person can be in. During this time, you want someone that will give your pet their utmost attention, someone who displays the empathy, care, gentle touch, and honesty you want in a physician that sees you, your friends, or family. These are the qualities that I immediately noticed in Dr. Khouban. I arrived at her vet clinic with 10/10 stress and emotions through the roof. Right off the bat, she soothed my cat by gently talking to him and softly stroking his back, and then made me feel a million times more comfortable by calmly and confidently explaining her plan. After taking my cat, she provided me with updates and intermittent spurts of reassurance and ease. After giving my cat back to me, she went through all her diagnostics and findings in language that I can understand, and made sure that I understood everything and all my options prior to leaving. She offered me opportunities to ask questions and respectfully answered and provided detailed explanations. I felt a huge sigh of relief - I had someone in my corner that would make sure my cat was heading in the right direction. Once home, she even followed up with me and made sure that all my prescriptions were placed appropriately. She also followed up with my cat's progress throughout the next two weeks. It can sometimes be hard to sense whether a physician is "just doing their job" or if she/he is fulfilling their passion and truly caring for your loved one as if it was their own. With Dr. Khouban, the entire visit felt like the latter. I am truly grateful and will forever go to her for all my animal needs. read more

I really love that I can count on them being there 24 hours a day. And they have regular prices up until 10pm and then again at 7am, so if you have to go before or after work, it doesn't cost a paw and a tail! I've seen Dr. Rabe, who was very comprehensive in explaining my cat's eye condition. They also have two ophthalmologists here and other specialists. The facilities are clean, everyone is professional, it's easy to get through to reception and make appointments. As well, you're always welcome to walk in, since it is an emergency center. And to top if off...they have great parking! read more

I was cat-sitting for my daughter's cat. He tends to get constipated and I took him in because he had not had a bowel movement in a really long time, even after taking the medicine his regular vet had prescribed. I was particularly worried because I also thought he was not really acting like himself. I took him to ASEC because it was after hours. Oddly enough, the young vet at ASEC did not do a physical exam in my presence, but instead immediately took the cat to a back room. Then, I had to wait. She had not even really taken a full report from me. Eventually, she came back and told me that she could do nothing, not even examine him, without sedating him (which would not be cheap, by the way). Not some kind of topical numbing, but "putting him under." She also immediately began talking about the possibility of needing an enema or surgery. I told her that he was a very old cat, that he has a heart murmur, and that his regular vet feels it would be too risky to sedate him, but she was adamant that she must have permission to sedate him - that it was the only option. I took the cat home. Soon, he had a bowel movement and everything was fine. While you might think this whole experience was quick, it was not. She took him away and I waited. She stopped in briefly to get my permission for sedation and apparently did not expect me to decline. When I told her my cat was considered too old for sedation, I thought she would give me other options, but she didn't. At that point, I was pretty sure I needed to leave, but felt I needed to check with my daughter and her husband, who were vacationing in another country. So, I woke them in the middle of the night. Then, I had to wait for her again. Wait, wait, wait. Still no bending on her part. I have sometimes, in the past, cared for the cat in my own home and he has a vet at my place, too. Very odd that neither my daughter's nor my vet thought it was a good idea to sedate such an old cat, especially one with a heart murmur, and found other ways to address his constipation, but this vet gave me only this expensive, aggressive, and risky option and pushed this agenda so aggressively. I also never have been to a vet who would not examine the pet in the presence of the owner...? It all seemed extremely heavy-handed and even shady to me. A money-making mentality. Needless to say, I will not be back and neither will my daughter. read more

Dr. Somerville came into the hospital at 3 in the AM to perform this life saving surgery on Mugsie. She had to work the following day; but this did not stop her from coming in at 3 AM. Just got home from ASEC with our great dane. We noticed she had labored breathing, was lethargic and no appetite (which i REALLY unusual for her). I quickly researched 24 hour vets in LA and chose ASEC. I'm so glad that we did. After a thorough intake the vet recommended blood test and xrays. All charges were made very clear up front and we were informed at each point. And because she's large they actually ended up taking more xrays than we actually paid for - just made us cover the 4 angles, rather than each attempt at getting what they wanted/needed. In the end, she was diagnosed with pneumonia and we had the option of hospitalizing her for a more speedy, but obviously more costly recovery or bringing her home for a slower, but still (hopefully) effective recovery. All of the staff was so kind. They are not super cheap, but honestly I thought the prices were quite fair for late night/emergency care and not all that far off from regular vet prices. Emergencies are expensive and make me thankful we have pet insurance. read more

I have really waited long and hard before writing this poor review but I can't take it any longer. My dog had a very serious accident and was brought here to ASEC for emergency care. Emergency care here was extremely costly but we felt like the team cared and they were doing good work. Unfortunately since the accident, The care, customer service and attention to my pets health have gone from good to downright neglectful. At one of the bandage change appointments which cost $150, we were made to wait an excessive amount of time, the bandage was not applied properly and when I spoke to the doctor later, he suggested the dog must've loosened it. No responsibility was taken whatsoever for the poor work done by one of their technicians. We were very disappointed but decided to continue care here so it would be consistent for our pet. This weekend we were charged $2800 for a growth to be removed from my dogs behind. Before the surgery was started I was contacted by somebody from the billing department who is extremely rude and accused me of not paying my bill and that the surgery was going to be held up until I did. Not only was this not true but the costs proposed for this surgery would never actually disclosed to me until my dog was already there waiting to undergo the procedure. After getting my dog home we discovered that the IV was never removed. The person answering the phone instructed us to take it out ourselves. There was extensive bleeding and still to this point no doctor has called and no one has followed up. I can't fathom why we paid all of that money and my dog could have an infection sitting here at home because of the neglect of the staff at ASEC. I'm not a fan of writing bad reviews but with this combination of bad service, rude personnel on the phone and now absolute neglect of my pet while charging very high fees is absolutely inexcusable... All staff was professional and caring. Dr. Chow (surgeon) and Gus (vet tech) were very responsive. They took the time to listen to my concerns and talk through difficult decisions. My cat has a heart condition, and had a bleeding tumor in his ear that many vets had looked at but were afraid to treat. Dr. Chow explained the worst case scenario, but understood that I wanted to be consulted after each test to decide how invasive of a surgery was necessary. In the end, they found another problem and decided to do the least invasive surgery and wait for biopsy results before making any further decisions. I'm happy to report that 2-days post surgery, my cat is doing well. I gave 4 stars instead of 5 because the situation is ongoing. 5 stars so far, and I'll update later. :) read more

i called 2 locations 1st one is the vca west location on 1900 south sepulveda rude telephone people. had a snappy attitude the whole phone call. i was trying to get pricing but she did that thing where people talk louder into an almost yell the same unhelpful information over and over. what she was saying didn't make sense so i asked her to clarify to which she just said the same exact thing only louder and louder - fair to say we had words. couldn't have been more unkind - if you don't employ anyone who knows how much a procedure costs then well wtf. office visit - $320.50 for 30 minutes the whole extra $.50 must really make a difference. procedure - $2000 - $3000 ct scan $4500 - $5000 needless to say like most people cannot afford $9000 - i mean wow. 2nd vca location across the street person on the phone was nice and helpful - to get an appt that is booked weeks and weeks out you have to pay for the appt in full in advance - you can get it refunded up until 48 hours of the appt time and date otherwise they keep it. office visit - $201.00 for 1 hour procedure - $1500 still a lot of money but more affordable. i called back yesterday to ask other questions and found out that this was just the vet visit not for the procedure and a separate appt for the procedure had to be scheduled but they don't know when or what time the procedure would be and that i would have to leave my cat there all day long possibly until the next day. leaving an old guy over night when i don't know any of the people is well, scary. turns out $1500 is not the real price. no price is real until they send you an official estimate lol - here we go it's really $5200 - $900 of which is just anesthesia - and don't forget the $25.00 shipping and handling fee. payment must be made up front and it full. i booked this appt and paid weeks ago while my cat was ill thinking ok i can do $1500 + $200 - i guess they were going to spring the $5k inv at the end or something. i really have no idea what tf is going on? i know vets work hard and are in high demand these days but ripping people off, price gouging and being rude af jerks is really disappointing. for the record a colonoscopy for a grown human being costs less than this. try laaser on san fernando they were super nice - more affordable - have their own parking lot - are still practicing full covid protocols. do not go to vca. i would cuss a lot more but you know - trying to keep it classy unlike these fools. read more

Dr. Saelinger has a long list of publication credits and is truly the cardiac expert you want. Through our year of care together, we came know Carley as a really kind person filled with passion and humor. Through it all, she was there for us like a member of the family. We brought our dog here who was misdiagnosed at this clinic and a year later was diagnosed with IVDD. She was showing all symptoms and they had no clue. Not to mention the crazy prices! Take a moment to read this post - its an honest take on ASEC. At 10 PM on July 3rd, my dog jumped off the bed and slipped a disk in its back. Panicked, I called a family friend (who happens to be a vet), and based on a phone consultation discussing my dog's symptoms, he suggested that the problem seemed neurological and that I take my dog in to the hospital the next morning, which I did. Given that the next day was July 4th, almost every normal vet was closed. The first open dog clinic that I found immediately turned me away and told me I needed to go to an emergency hospital that had an orthopedic surgeon on hand, which is how I came across ASEC. When I got there, they examined my dog and immediately confirmed the diagnosis of my friend -- the dog had a slipped disk, and they needed to bring in the surgeon right away. When I pressed them on the gravity of the injury, they assured me that if we didn't bring the surgeon in right away - we would risk the dog never walking in. Then they mentioned - of course after - that the cost to bring in the surgeon (and 2 techs) on a holiday was 2 grand. Reluctantly, I agreed, and the surgical team came in. The surgical team immediately sent my dog into a CAT scan to confirm the slippage in his disk. I found this highly strange - because moments before - I was being told up and down that the dog definitively had a slipped disk and that we needed to operate. But now, I was being told that they THOUGHT he had a slipped disk and needed to do the CAT Scan to confirm. Made the decision to bring in the surgery team feel very dishonest. Anyways, the cost of the Cat Scan? $1800. Reluctantly, I agreed and we pressed on. The doc calls me 2-3 hours later and tells me that after seeing the CAT Scan, he sees only a partial slippage and not enough to warrant surgery. He says he can operate if I'd like (total cost: 10K) or he can just let the dog heal on his own (total cost: 4K). I told him I wanted to do what was best for the dog - and he said, "if it was my dog, I would not operate." They elected to keep the dog overnight and give him meds, and I picked him up in the morning. Total cost was about 4K to essentially have a Cat Scan and be given the dog back and told to wait it out. Whatever, I'm not mad - I'm happy to have a dog thats healing. Here's the kicker - after spending 4K for essentially nothing - ASEC wants to charge me $100 every time I go in for a follow up. Something about this feels very dishonest to me, and when I push back and say, "I've paid you 4K, these follow ups should be covered in the cost of that," I'm met with absolutely zero customer service. I'm not interested in a free ride here, but I can't believe the greed of this company. They take advantage of people who are in dire straits with their animals. Anyways, I just want any future customers to understand the culture of this hospital. They'll take care of your dog, but they'll make you pay for it (literally & figuratively) read more

I can't say enough about Dr. Barncord and the rest of the cardiology team. I am a human doctor, and Dr. Barncord and staff always took the time to answer my questions. Under her care, our pup with CHF exceeded her life expectancy by almost a year. Zoe had to cross the rainbow bridge in June. The team was so loving and supportive in those final days. Again, there are no words for my gratitude. I would not hesitate to choose Dr. Barncord if your fur baby needs help with their heart. read more

Reception does not care about customers NOR PETS, I have been requesting a refill for my 18 year old cat who has cancer and needs his pain medicine and after 2 weeks of requesting it, they are still not able to provide the refill even though they had emailed me I could pick it up and I drove 18 miles to pick it up and then noone knew about it, did not have it. I have been coming to this facility over the years for emergency care and have been very happy with the care received. I have high standards since I once worked for a Vet out of state. My only complaint is that the really great doctors have left to go out of state. Regarding the complaints about charges - they absolutely give you a breakdown of estimated costs before they actually treat the animal in every visit I had. So those complaining they were duped into treatment without an estimate are flat out lying or perhaps so traumatized by fear for their pet that they forgot, but you sign the estimate before treatment. Recently my dog fell off a high surface with a back injury. I pulled my car up to the door. I went in and asked for help because I didn't feel confident I wouldn't cause more injury. Immediately they understood & sent a tech back out with me. This was on a busy Saturday afternoon. The front staff has always been exceedingly helpful and polite. As I said I have been coming since they opened with different pets. Yes, ALL ER services are costly, especially when you go to a place that has up to date equipment and specialist available. For those of you who complained about bad treatment and high prices and no empathy try City of Angels in Culver City! There you will experience less then thorough care at very high prices and very long waits. . I have also used Dr.Trevedi for 2 pets with complicated conditions. I think he is extremely professional and highly competent. I am returning this afternoon for his opinion. I just learned ASEC was bought by VCA. I avoid all VCA Facilities with the exception of a specialist referral. Talk about rip off and poor care - VCA does it. I hope ASEC hasn't changed with the buyout. I will see today. read more

My little dog recently passed and I do believe it's because of this particular facility. Careless vets that misdiagnose dogs or just don't know wtf they are doing. This place is so amateur and corporate that all they care about is collecting money and over charging. They misdiagnosed my 4 year old dog and he passed after his surgery. Yelp removed my post 2X so far because apparently I did not express my experience at this place so here I will be sure to be very verbose! My experience here was not ideal for my pet. My pet was born without an anus, I came here in hopes that these surgeons would help save my kitten! I was charged a fairly expensive price for a consultation. I was then told to wait until my pet grew but in the midst, my pet declined so I was forced to go back much sooner. When I attempted to return for services, I was told I would have to start all over with another vet and pay once again. Also the quote I was provided was basically null or void. Some staff who attended or responded to my needs appeared compassionate and helpful but more often I experienced staff who was very blunt, directive, and lacked in responding to my firm questions. At the end, I ended up with a ER doctor who was extremely expressive and advised only negatively which led to a forced decision to euthanize my pet! After thousands of dollars I was still being asked by ASEC to pay almost 10k for surgery and could not even give any reassurance that my pet would make it! Even tho my pet was very ill at this point, and I get all the possibilities but this was one of the most horrible experiences here! I understand the business perspective but what I don't understand is the missing compassion to help save a little pets life. any assistance from this place would have been a great help and knowing all the possibilities, I would have still been fighting for my pets life! Dr Susan Downing sacrificially and tirelessly talked to me and my husband as our beloved daughter Aggie Baron Brown was struck with Cancer and over two months got sicker and passed. Dr. Downing was incredibly kind and generous and brilliant in her talent and it was and is unforgettable to us. Our vet at Santa Monica Pet Annie Hernandez showed little care and the main focus for her and her colleagues was money. They never contacted us except for money. I don't bring this up to purposely tarnish them but to highlight in stark contrast Sue Downing and her team who cared so much and gave so much many times with no charge to Aggie and to her two anguishing parents - me and my husband. I'm so grateful to have taken my dog for knee surgery w/ Dr. Eric Chow. I hated the idea that due to Covid we can't have face to face appts. especially for such an intensive surgery but he was very thorough explaining the procedure prior to it & did an incredible job w/ minimal scarring. He outlined everything I should expect & really put my mind at ease. He's very caring & returned phone calls quickly when I had questions. Needless to say, my dog was up & walking in no time. I'm sorry you are confused. #1 I believe I should have been made aware that Dr Dunn was an intern #2 Dr Dunn told me my cats mouth was swollen because she has gingivitis. It turns out my cats mouth was swollen because she had ulcers in her mouth. This was diagnosed at another vet office within 5 minutes and no tests. This was diagnosed properly because I was seen by a vet that had experience. #3 my cat could not drink by herself. Her mouth had an odorous smell to it. That is why I brought her to the Emergency room. That was the first thing she needed - water. Therefore, before starting with your hour and a half tests she should have first been provided with water. She was not and I did not find this out until I came back to get the test results. I find this unacceptable. #4 I did not find out Dr Dunn was an intern until I called the day after putting my cat to sleep. I asked why she was not in your brochure and I was told it was because she is an intern and not officially hired by you. If I knew she was an intern when I was there I would have either asked to see an experienced doctor or taken her somewhere else immediately. #5 why do I say you are uncaring? Because I interacted with 4 different staff members including the doctor and not one of them had anything of comfort to say to me the entire visit I was there. I might as well have been getting my car serviced. My regular vet and the vet I had to take her to on Sunday have are caring and all their staff is caring and comforting. There are other reviews on here that state the same thing. Instead of denying this, why don't you investigate this yourself and retrain your staff on how to be empathetic towards your clients. We are bringing our furry loved ones to you and we should be treated in a caring manner that shows us you also care about our pets. Please let me know if there is anything else that is confusing. I can't speak highly enough of Dr. Regalado. We had a very difficult day yesterday when we had to put our dog down after he had a severe onset of a very aggressive cancer. Dr. Regalado was extremely empathetic, patient, caring, informative and helpful. She made the process so much easier as difficult as it was. My dog chewed his paw and caused a bad infection my vet recommended I take him here for them to treat it and at the same time diagnose his limping. Bad idea! We checked in they put him in a kennel while we waited. 2 hrs passed and no word. They kept telling us we were next. Finally I've had enough waiting I asked what's going on? The receptionist told me I have to wait for the evening shift doctors at 6. I came in at 3pm. After waiting so long to see a doctor he said he couldn't help my dog much and left us in the treatment room. He never came back I went to the front desk and demanded they bring my dog out of the kennel. 250$ my dog came out with no treatment the flesh was still bleeding and raw. These people are the worst just making money and doing absolutely nothing. It's wrong what their doing. I felt so bad my dog sat in a kennel for 3hrs for no reason. read more

I have had several very good experiences with VCA ASEC, but the last one has prompted me to write. About two weeks ago I noted that our 17 year old Jack Russell Terrier, Baci, seemed off. She wasn't eating and, while not in any pain, didn't seem herself. So I piled her into the car and drove to VCA. First of all, the COVID preparations were excellent. When I parked there was a sign telling me to wait and giving me a number to call. I called the number, explained the situation, and after only a few short minutes a very nice assistant came out, wearing a mask, and kindly carried Baci from the car into the building. I won't go into the details but over the next two days the staff were incredibly professional, communicative, personable, and bright. They had sophisticated testing and procedures available but carefully walked me through the process of deciding what was appropriate and what, given Baci's age, was not. They called throughout the day to update me and patiently answered my questions and managed my expectations. Our sweet Baci died peacefully in her sleep about 36 hours after admission. The doctor called me as soon as it happened and a second doctor called the next morning just to check in. She reassured me that we had done all we could and let me know I could call if we had more questions. Yesterday we received an envelope in the mail. Inside was a beautiful hand made card with Baci's name written in calligraphy and her paw print. There was also a sympathy card in which two of the doctors had taken the time to write us and convey their sympathy. All in all, a difficult experience was made kinder, sweeter, and more comforting because they were there. We are very grateful. read more

I took my pet here and it didn't come out alive this place needs to be shut down and they ripped me off $11,000 later and had no explanation on why this happened and they went ahead and gave him medication with out discussing with me than give me a bill for it. I am warning everyone to be careful and do not take your pets here mine was a happy one before he went in and few days later they said we need to put him down . I had a terrible horrible experience with this hospital. And it started off well. Their emergency services saw my dog. He was in urgent need for care. The situation temporarily resolved itself and he needed more diagnostics and treatments and they gave me counter instructions to work with my general vet to refer my dog. Then when my vet called to get the diagnostic they refused to treat my dog. Who had already been in 3 times in 48 hours. As a result my dog is still sick as they suck. Terrible patient treatment. Unfair for the cost and time for me, my family and my poor dog. read more

After sending a very thoughtful long winded email to the hospital manager, I never received a reply back. That says all you need to know about where VCA ASECs priorities are. I believe I spent over two hours of my time writing that email. When we went to get our dogs sutures removed the front desk really had the nerve to say it was a 1-2 hour wait. Removing the sutures took maybe two minutes. And then when her wound opened up again and we had to rush back, they told us it was 4-5 hours. 4-5 hour wait for a dog that was literally bleeding!!! At 10 pm on a Sunday night....I don't know if they took our dog sooner because I threw a fit. Or if they're just that incompetent and give you wildly unrealistic wait times just for the hell of it. read more

12/20/19 Update: Internal Medicine has been excellent at responding to emails. I encourage emailing for appointments, specific questions for the doctor or prescription refills (give them a day to turn it around). They've also been better about keeping appointment times. I have my pet's Addison's disease being managed by this location and have received consistent terrible service for the past two months (they have been managing my pet since January). Internal Medicine never answer calls anymore so don't bother. Voicemails never get returned and emails are left ignored. If you need attention your best bet is to go in person or go anywhere else. I went in for an appointment 2 days ago and asked why calls weren't being answered. They said they were having issues with the phones and that voicemails weren't being received. I even overheard a person say they were only coming in to speak with someone because the phones weren't being answered. I'd be more forgiving but a pet hospital shouldn't take more than a month to resolve such issues. I am sure what happened to the staff/phones but the the amount they charge you'd think they'd have better service. read more

I have previously been too harsh. The organization of communication is still subpar in my 5 visits. But they treated my dogs whom I love. And they're doing great medical work to an exploding client base during an incredible pandemic. They deserve a pass. Normally four stars and I usually always hold people 100% accountable for what they do well and otherwise - but it's the medical care of innocent and delightful loving animals. Communication issues don't merit even a half star reduction. Thank you for the treatments of my pups this past year. read more
