I took my two pups to VCA Ben White Animal Hospital for the first time today. I have been to many vet clinics in my long life. This place has been the best experience of all. Dr. Mary Nauert noticed all the things going on with my dogs. All the ones I was not even going to mention because we were there for vaccinations only. For example, she noticed my dog's eyes were red. Not one other vet ever even brought it up and it has been a concern. She noticed everything about the pups and touched on it briefly. Leaving space for me to ask more if need be. Dr. Nauert was so thorough and attentive. We have found our Furever veterinarian. She also explained the bill and there was no confusion or pressure. We made a future health plan for our girl pup. Her assistant Lauren was amazing also and was so supportive and knowledgeable. Their pricing is a great value! Thank you so much! I'm very impressed! **UPDATE** My wonder pet insurance company Trupanion stepped in to resolve the matter and took care of the balance with VCA... I don't feel like they should have had too but they did and I am grateful. I was contacted by my pet insurance carrier and told VCA reached out to them accusing me essentially of insurance fraud. My insurance company stated VCA contacted them and told them I was paid in error for my pets claim for services provided That accusation is unfounded and untrue luckily my insurance knows what payments they have made and could see I was never paid nor reimbursed in error. VCA made this allegation in reprisal after my negative reviews. I will not stand for liable and defamation of character. Attempting to put my innocent pets health insurance coverage at risk is due to a dispute is unethical at best. VCA moral compass needs to be adjusted. I don't believe this establishment cares about animal...they only care about their bottom line which is what happens when your pets health care is being managed by a candy bar company like Mars Incorporated which purchased VCA for 9.1 Billion dollars in 2017. Make no mistake this is a corporate company that puts profits ...even unearned ones before health. If I could give zero stars I would. Shame on you VCA and shame on your staff for being dishonest and seeking to harm and disrupt my pets health care! Beware of this Vet Clinic. This establishment is incompetent at best. I brought my dogs in for medical services and checked out at the front desk using Trupanion Direct Pay Pet Insurance which is an agreement between the vet hospital and the pet insurer for direct payments between each other after I pay my portion of the bill which is the deductible, office visit, and the copay which I took care of. I started getting suspicious at this clinics behavior when I received random phone calls asking for additional payments because "the staff mad mistakes charging me the correct bill, this happened on to occasions once via phone call when I reluctantly paid $60.00 and then after a medical procedure for a different dog where I was kept hostage at the front desk and shaken down for $19.00. I was told after the $19.00 that I was now at a zero balance and the front desk mistake was taken care of. Well guess what at my next visit I was told at check for different services that I owed $230.33 that the insurance did not cover. When I contacted the insurance company they confirmed that they had made payment to VCA so now I am caught in between both companies. Trupanion has actually provided records of payment and VCA has only provided a "Balance forward with no detail going as far as to add a finance charge even though I have no credit agreement with then. The absolute best. VCA Ben White is our vet for three dogs aged 3-13. We switched from Austin Urban Vet downtown about a year ago, and my only regret is not switching sooner. The staff is all friendly and the veterinarians are everything you would want for your pet: knowledgeable, genuine, compassionate and patient. I have been going here for years! I used to love it. I have a new pup (2 years old) that had a bad experience with Dr.Garza along with me. I requested never to see her again. The next two vets were sweet and took time with him. However, I am a care club member. I moved 1 month after my care club renewal and could not cancel it. Sooo I will be paying for 11 months and not be using their services. I understand that it is a contract BUT when I called to update my information and ask, just in case, if I could get out of it, the man took my information. He knew I was not happy to have to continue paying so when I said thank you and didn't get a response and he hung up, I was outraged. Why the hell would you not thank me for my business? I have only taken my dog in for routine visits and they've been fine. Today, he is having some issues and I wanted to get him in within a day or two to find out what's going on. I called and was told they are completely booked and don't have anything available until sometime next week. He informed me the clinic does not set aside any times during the week to bring in sick pet patients (appointments or walk-in). I should have asked their policy on this before I started using them. My dog broke a toe and they wrapped it with a split. $1000 later and having to replace his splint 3 times were now at the 24 hour animal hospital after his split/wrap Slipped off as if it was never there revealing the terrible wounds it had left on my dogs leg. The plastic split was just digging into his skin. I'm sure I won't see my money again, and they didn't absolutely nothing. Never spoke with an actual vet because "Covid". My cat has been under the weather and when I called, Maria could obviously tell I was upset and concerned. she helped me get worked into a same day appointment and then after we had hung up, she actually texted me and let me know they had an appointment time come open last minute, and she offered it to me! So I'm super critical when it comes to my dog! So please forgive the super long review. Customer service: So after researching and flipping through reviews, I called this place to set up an appointment. Unlike thrive (which is cheap yes) this place can get you in literally the next day while thrive takes 3-4 weeks to be seen. Overall the staff was very nice. Everyone greeted me and took care of me pretty quickly. The only issue I have is through the phone. Maybe it was the person who picked up my phone call ( June 23rd at around 7:30 AM), but she did not list my phone number and did not spell out my dogs name correctly when I repeatedly spelled it out slowly for her. I didn't catch that until I received the email confirmation and the front desk lady told me that my phone number was missing in their file. Like I said, I'm very critical and it just shows off first impression! Other than that everyone is very respectful and calm. Waiting area: It's pretty big with lots of seating! There are two sides so if your dog is rowdy it's ok! You definitely can have a spot to yourself in the corner since there's lots of seating. Vet: I had Dr. Garza, she was very nice and super informative. She is honest and carefully told me what needed to be done as well as gave me options to approach my dogs infection aggressively or not. I really like how she presented herself, but I feel like you can't go wrong with either doctor's. I probably would prefer to be seen by Dr. Garza for every visit. Cleanliness: I am a very clean person and I personally work in a doctor's office so I know how important it is to keep things clean. I didn't really see any major stains or anything in the entire place. The holding room was pretty clean, I did see some left over dog fur on the counter, but other than that it's pretty clean. Price: I am an ex-college student so I'm pretty sure I'm super poor from my student loans lol. I paid $69 for some antibiotics and a genta spray for my dogs staph infection. It was my first visit so the office fee was waived. I don't think the price was that bad, austin veterinary center has the same prices for those type of medications too. The price is probably a solid medium range. It's not cheap as emancipet but it's not crazy expensive as the firehouse vet place. I personally think it's pretty fair. Overall I really like this place. I hope to use them in the future as my established vet care. I definitely love it that they open on Saturday's because I work full time and don't have the time to take off work to have my dog seen. At first I was intimated by the one star reviews they had here, but honestly I experienced a pretty solid 4.75 star experience! read more

I have been coming to this vet since 2018. I have always had good service (typically), but today was the last straw for me. I was out of town and called at 8/9am this morning for an anal gland issue that my smaller pup was having. I specifically asked the front desk staff if they had any availability for this afternoon or if they were fully booked. I was instructed that they were NOT fully booked today and they had an appointment at 1:30pm. I advised that I could not make it at that time and I was then told that they had a walk-in at 2:45pm for a different doctor. I was specifically told that I would not be seeing Dr. Yen, which Was fine. I just needed my dog to be seen because of the concern with his anal glands. I arrived at 2:45pm and checked in. I was told that there was one walk in before me and I would be seen soon/shortly. I called at 3:15 pm and was told that they could not tell me when I would be seen. I waited 15 more minutes and was told it would be another 30 minutes to an hour to see Dr. Yen. I advised that when I scheduled the walk-in - I would be seeing a different doctor (I cannot remember the name). However; whenever I called - I was told a completely different story. As I continued to have a frustrating conversation with the front desk rep - I was then told that even though I checked in at 245 for the other doctor - she was on lunch and I would need to wait to see Dr. Yen after a 3:30 appointment was checked in. Then I was continuously told by the front desk rep on the phone, "I don't know what to tell you." The front desk usually does a great job at keeping things honest, cut and clear - but today ... was not the case. I have usually received great service for my pups here - but today was completely unacceptable. I was then told that I could drop off my dog, while I had already been sitting in the parking lot for an HOUR! Just about in tears - while I'm explaining to the front desk that I live an HOUR AWAY. I was desperate to get my dog seen so I could get back to Pflugerville and it was extremely hot outside. How on earth was I going to drop off my dog less than a few hours before closing - go back to Pflugerville which was an hour drive - then manage to get back to South Austin before they closed!?!? I work in Customer Service. You do NOT TELL A CLIENT , CUSTOMER, MEMBER, etc - "Well, I don't know what to tell you!" YOU DO NOT SAY THAT. That is unprofessional. That will cause an escalation to quickly arise more! I would NEVER SAY ANYTHING LIKE THAT TO A PATIENT OF MINES. Then you don't even apologize for the misinformation.. I'm on the brink of tears - still sitting in the parking lot- & still have not been seen. I will be looking for another vet immediately! read more

15 years sgo my 9 year old mastiff mix Ceasar was dying of cancer and I took him there. I dropped him off and when I picked him up we were waiting for the vet. When she came in my sweet baby who had never been afraid of anyone or anything started whimpering and was trying desperately to keep away from her. I realized she had hurt him while he was there. To start, the doctors themselves have been fantastic and we really like Dr. Tomlin. If I was rating them alone, this would be 5 stars. My dog's primary vet is in San Diego, and they're a VCA, so when we started spending part of the time in Austin I needed a second vet here as well. That said, I went with Ben White based on their affiliation, thinking it would be easier with my vet in SD. I have to say, I'm really disappointed that I need to look for another place to take Goldie. The first issue was a few months ago when I had my dog retested for her thyroid and got her pills refilled. She started losing weight, noticeably, and so I checked her pill bottle and she was dispensed the wrong dosage. This is dangerous with thyroid medication!!! After a huge hassle of figuring out what was going on, having to take her to my vet in San Diego (and spend another $200) to get rechecked out and retested, it was a mistake with the Ben White front staff. I continued to take her there but today was my last day. I realized she was due for a heartworm medication refill, so I called and realized she needed a test. They said they could take me at 2pm the following day so I got there around 1:55. I waited in the reception area, and wasn't seen by a tech until 2:40. Had I known it would be that long of a wait, I would have rescheduled! They kept telling me "just a few more minutes". I understand things happen, but if you're overcrowded that day, I would have appreciated a courtesy call ahead of me driving the 20 minutes to get there. To top that off, I get all the way back home (nearly 2 hours from when I originally left for "a quick tech appointment") and realized that AGAIN, they gave me the wrong heartworm medication (wrong size of dosage). My goodness, if you are given the great responsibility of dosing medication for any living thing you should take it seriously!!! You should double and triple check before letting a patient walk out the door! read more

Wow. This is my first Yelp review. Why? Because I'm not normally a complainer. It takes a lot to ruffle my feathers enough to write a bad review about a place, and yet, here we are... We've been taking our two dogs to VCA Ben White for about six months now. I knew from the beginning that they weren't my favorite vet office, but considering the office is located less than a mile from my house I couldn't justify traveling to one of the more inviting VCA branches. Long story short, over the past six months I've experienced many of the less-than-perfect practices that other reviewers have mentioned--free exams followed by needless prescriptions and follow-ups, failure to mention discounts on medications, etc. But today was the kicker. I woke up this morning and my lab had a tick over his eye. Big deal? Not really. I know I should have been able to pull the sucker out myself but we're talking about an 86 lb dog, and after an hour of attacking him with tweezers, he and I were both pretty sick of each other. I Googled some different techniques for tick removal, and saw that several sources said to call your vet because most offices are quick to help. Well, as I mentioned before VCA Ben White is only right down the street so I figured it was worth a try. I called and the receptionist said to bring my dog right in, that they would be happy to help pull the tick out. $60. It cost me $60 for the vet to come in with a pair of special scissors and yank the tick free. I couldn't believe it when I got to the counter. I was half expecting them to do what other vet offices would have done and say something like, "Hey, you just spent $200 here early this week on medications--this five minute appointment is on us!" But no, what they said was, "That will be $60." If you have any doubt in your mind about whether or not this office's top priority is making money, please ask yourself if you would ever, ever charge someone $60 to pluck out a tick. **Update: Okay, about two seconds after posting this VCA Ben White called and said that they apologize for not giving me an estimate before removing the tick. I don't know, maybe they could feel my keyboard burning a mile away. To make up for the mistake, they are removing the exam fee and only charging me the $25 tick removal fee. Still too much? Yes. Will you get charged $60 for your next tick removal fee? Probably, but at least you'll get a pre-removal quote. Does this new charge make me feel better about the office? Eh, not really, but I do give kudos to the receptionist for her diligence in actually talking to her manager and calling me to try and make amends. read more

This place is a total scam. They give you a free appointment and then tell you that you need a whole bunch of things that you don't. My dog simply had fleas, and they tried to push on me 60 days of antibiotics, on top of a topical antibiotic, flea medication (which was needed), 30 days of steroids for the dog and more. It would have come out to over $300. I bought some flea medication and my dog was fine. The tiny little "sores" that the vet said I needed to spend over $100 on antibiotics for, were the size of a tiny little pimple, and there were maybe ten on my dogs belly. After just a couple days they went away with no medication. Save your money and go somewhere else. They leave you sitting there forever and then try and sell you so many unneeded things. Short review: I highly recommend if you want confident, in-depth and incredibly caring medical care for your pet. Long review: It takes a lot for me to write a Yelp review, but I've been so happy with my experiences at VCA Ben White, that I wanted to share. I found VCA Ben White after I became discouraged with my previous vet. To make a long story short, my previous vet removed a small growth in my cat's mouth and told me later it may or may not be cancer and he didn't send it off to the lab. He wanted to "wait and see." When the growth came back, I wanted to be more proactive and I discovered VCA Ben White through Google searching. I was able to get my cat an appointment at VCA Ben White on the day that I called, and by the end of the day we had a game plan for my cat. Our wonderful doctor, Dr. Tomlin, gave me three options to pursue and we quickly moved on one of them. Within a week my cat's growth was removed, biopsied and I was thrilled to learn it was non-cancerous. I've now had three appointments at VCA Ben White and they all went great. What makes VCA Ben White great: -At the appointment they take their time, give you options and answer all of your questions -When my cat was under anesthesia, they called me to let me know she was handling it well and they called me to tell me when she was waking up -Dr. Tomlin has sent me emails after hours to explain things further or to see if I have any questions -They send follow up texts the next day to see how your pet is doing -Every single staff member I've encountered as been kind, friendly and really sweet to my cat I know some people on Yelp have complained about the price. You are getting what you pay for here. Is it a little bit more than other places? I don't know, but all I know is that they go above and beyond to make sure my cat is taken care of and to answer all crazy cat momma questions I have. That is invaluable to me. read more

My husband and I woke up this morning with a disturbing cat situation, and we were dissatisfied enough with our normal vet that we had already determined never to take one of our animals there again. My husband remembered Ben White Animal Hospital because his old roommate used to take her animals there. So we packed our cat into the car and ran off to Ben White in order to be there as soon as they opened and plead with them to see our cat. The doctor wasn't in yet, but the manager got us calmed down and made us and our cat comfortable. She called the doctor, who was en route, and gave the doc all the details of our situation. The doctor saw us the second she arrived, and the staff did an excellent job of making sure we understood exactly what the problem was, what caused it, and all the details of the required procedures and medications. I was very impressed with the manager, the doctor, and the vet tech. Everyone was very friendly, made sure all of our questions were answered adequately, and even took a few minutes to stand around looking at pictures of our other cats. To top it off, the bill wasn't nearly as high as I feared it was going to be, and I certainly don't feel like we overpayed. read more

I was seen very quickly and every person we came in contact with was incredibly patient and kind with our high-anxiety dog. Dr. Yen did my dog's procedure on her lunch break. I really don't understand all the negative feedback. I've had nothing but an amazing experience here. I brought my first dog here shortly after moving to Austin. Dr. Martinson has been amazing. She is extremely caring, giving and knowledgable. She provided us with a wealth of information regarding all the issues my dog was dealing with us. They always presented us with a list of options when it came to treatments. When my dog was passed away in December, Dr. Martinson was extremely caring and tender offering condolences; supporting me during the grieving process. After his passing, I was so surprised to receive a card from the entire staff relaying their support. Such a small token but such an amazing touch. After adopting my new dog, Dr. Martinson has been amazing. She always presents us with every available treatment option. Allowing us to tailor our care for what we could afford and what is most effective for our family member. I always leave with a wealth of information (and reading material) on the condition and issues my dog is facing. I would definitely recommend them, especially Dr. Martinson. read more
