I've been dealing with this qualified and compassionate team of veterinarians for years and they've always been understanding and fair. I have a cat who's just a joy to work with (yeah right) and they've always somehow managed to talk him down enough to do what they need to do without anybody losing an eye or a finger. They're not the cheapest game in town, but if cost is the only factor that's weighed when choosing a vet, I feel sorry for your pet. The gals at the front counter are ALWAYS cheerful, polite, kind and professional regardless of whether we call them on the phone or come in person. Lindsey, Anna Laura, Monica, Taryn, Ebonie and Mariah go above and beyond in providing outstanding customer service. As for the doctors, they are knowledgeable, thorough, informative and most important gentle and caring. In particular, Dr Andrews takes her time to listen to concerns, explain any results/findings in simple "laymen's" terms, offer options and empathizes when tough decisions need to be made. The VCA Foothill Vet Hospital staff are our heroes. The people here at VCA Foothill Vet Hospital immediately helped us when our dog escaped his leash, heading towards oncoming traffic. About 7 staff members or more were there at all times to successfully remove our dog, Cooper, underneath a car. They laid on the hot pavement and used control poles, snacks, and several leashes while the car's alarm blared next to their faces. This was an arduous process that took about an hour of their time and they did not give up. Additionally, these amazing people helped, even though they had already placed a sign that their break has started and ends at 2 pm. I remembered because my sister and I were outside discussing whether we should have our dog's nails cut given the amount of customers. After the incident, they even asked if we still needed help for the visit! We respectfully declined since we didn't want to give them more trouble. I am in awe of their kindness. As terrible pet owners, we were the reason that our dog wouldn't behave and cooperate easily. I rarely write reviews on Yelp and this is my first long review, but this is the least I can do to give gratitude even if it only helps a bit. These people are simply wonderful and they were heroic when we really desperately needed help. They did not berate us at all and understood our concerns. Even if your visit is not the same as my experience, I just want to let anyone who reads this review what these people are willing to go through to bring your pet to safety. Cannot say enough good things about the staff here. We have been bringing our dog and cat, as well as a dog who passed away, here for about 4 years and they have received excellent veterinary care. We board our dogs there as well. It was tough to get used to the idea of a "no appointment" facility after moving to LA from Chicago and worrying about wait times, but wait times are reasonable and it is nice that they will always take an urgent situation. They genuinely care about our pets and are excited to see them when we drop them off for boarding. Everyone seems to know their names when they walk in and if only one is dropped off, they always ask about the other. We know our animals are in very good hands here! read more

A Pasadena Gem. We couldn't get Maggie, our loud, demanding cat, in to see our normal vet because of COVID limits on patients, so I got over to Foothill at 7:15 AM Tuesday to get on their waiting list. Even though the office doesn't open until 7:30 I was about number fourteen on the list. I got some breakfast and went home, thinking it would be several hours, but got a call shortly after I sat down to eat my Lucky Boy breakfast burrito (also 5 stars!) and headed back. They got Maggie inside within a few minutes and about an hour later I got a call from Dr. Loo with a few questions. She could not have been nicer. An excellent communicator with a great sense of humor and clearly a lover of animals. She seemed to have gotten along very well with Maggie, no easy task, as that cat is no fan of vet clinics and still doesn't care all that much for me after ten years. We agreed on some blood work and tests, and she just called to say that everything looked great. I can't say enough about Dr. Loo and everyone we dealt with, including a special shoutout to Scott, the young assistant in charge of all of us in the parking lot waiting for our turn. Typical VCA where you seldom see the same doctor. It's a revolving door and I agree with the other reviews about the constant up-sell and requirement for services that aren't necessary. Often times, even routine vaccines will first require a doctor's physical exam. My dog's in great shape, I don't need a doctor whom I've never met to listen to his heart, feel him up for all of five minutes and then to give me a $100 invoice. Nice staff, but I'd go elsewhere. read more

Went back to vca to inform them that I didn't receive a welcome bag like I got for my other dog when I brought in for checkup. Both dogs were rescued from human society. I then informed them that we found worms in her stool today and she stated that I would have to pay for a vet visit and meds even though I was just there a few days ago!!! After I questioned that, she said I don't need to see vet just pay $26 for 2 pills! I went home and looked up exact same pills from Petsmart for $6! That's a 400% mark up!!! I have been taking numerous animals to the Foothill Vetranary Hospital for well over ten years. They provide good medical service and have kept my dogs healthy. For years, I have had friends compare prices from other vet clinics and in every discussion it turns out the Foothill Vet is at least 30% higher cost than any other clinic I've heard of. I accepted this, rationalizing that they have taken good care of my animals. BUT!!! Today they hit my limit. My dog needs Phenobarbatol twice a day. Foothill charged $41.00 for a month for the medication. I was able to get the same drug for $15.00 on line. Unfortunately, federal law now prohibits shipping this drug so I've been forced back to Foothill to buy the drug. I paid $41.00 in June. Today, when I picked up the identical prescription I was charged $62.50. When I inguired about the 50% price increase I was informed in a very flip manner that "the price has gone up". As of today, my two dogs, and my daughters two dogs will no longer visit Foothill Vet, and we will alert everyone we know about our experiences there. Perhaps their are enough folks in Pasadena who have no concern about outrageous vet bills, but I have finally HAD ENOUGH! read more

I was recommended to Foothill by a close family member. They were insensitive and only seemed like they cared about my $$. When they realized I couldn't afford a $900 bill (not to treat but to find out whats wrong with my cat) they acted MUCH different. They went from seeming genuinely caring to frigid cold. They said they could put him down for $70. After crying for an hour and saying my goodbyes, my fiance and I called them again, after doing a lot of research online. We decided to just get antibiotics and home treat him. They quoted us $70 to $100 for 3 medications. When I got there it was much higher. When I decided to only take one of the medications he needed desperately, the one medication miraculously doubled in price. I would not recommend. Seems like another corporate office. read more

This place is horrible and service is terrible!! Apparently pick up is between 7:30AM-8AM or else you get charged another full day of boarding. So if you were a few minutes late you would be charged a full day of boarding even though your pet was only there for a few minutes. If you are picking up you best go at 7Am and wait to be the first in line because they take forever to assist you. So if you get there at 7:50 expect to wait more than 10 minutes to even talk to someone and by then it would be already 8AM which means you have to pay an extra day of boarding. So technically if you arrive between 7:30-8AM you could still possibly be charged for an extra day of boarding if the staff doesn't help you right away. I don't recommend this place to any pet lover! read more

I took my puppy in twice to get vaccinated. I paid for exam/consultations and the vet didn't bother to actually do an exam. I learned at an emergency veterinarian two weeks after our final vaccination that my 5 month old has three congenital heart defects. The heart murmur he has is severe enough to hear and feel without a stethoscope and caused him to collapse. Been a long time client at Foothill Hospital, 20+ years. Cant imagine taking my furbabies anywhere else. From the doctors and techs, to the receptionists and kennel men, the staff is amazing and all contribute to the hospital's success. Special thanks to feline specialist extraordinaire Dr. Andrew's, the always friendly Dr. Kwan and Dr. Howes, GOAT vet tech Kathy, manager Trina, and other superstars like Ana Laura, Genevieve, Stephanie, and Oscar. I am especially grateful Foothill VCA remained open and accommodating to clients and their pets during Covid. With that being said, it's so nice and a relief to finally be able to go inside again and remain with our pets. These visits can be stressful not only for our pets but for the owners as well. Being able to interact and engage with the staff is so nice. My only complaint would be the club music in the lobby. I appreciate the upbeat vibe but feel something a little more mellow could promote a calming environment for the already nervous dogs and cats. Otherwise, stay awesome Foothill VCA! This review is specifically for English bulldog owners- BEWARE! Our english bully puppy tofu is only 10 wks old and has been coughing for 2-3 wks. My hubby took her to Foothill vet hospital last week to get checked up, because he's been taking his yorkie there for years and he said it is a very well-established, clean and professional hospital. I wasn't comfortable with it at all and I know english bully generally needs a bully specialist, but the only one that we know is Dr. Butchko in Riverside with walk-in only service, so for us who have hectic work schedule, it is hard to take the whole day off, drive there from pasadena, and wait in line until it's our turn (generally, the wait time is 3 hrs minimum...). Anyway, tofu saw Dr. Mary Jo Andrews the first time last week, and she totally had the wrong diagnosis. She said tofu was just allergic to some food and would be fine. She said she didn't hear noise in her lungs, didn't suggest anything else, prescribed her some clavomox pills and said she was good to go. My husband specifically asked the doctor if they should prescribe anything in liquid form because it is very difficult for puppies to take the pills, but she basically shut him down and said it was absurd. Of course, tofu wasn't getting any better. I kept telling my husband that we need to bring her to a bulldog specialist, but he insisted to bring tofu to foothill vet hospital one more time to see if anything changes. This time they did x-ray for her, and oops, after just 5 days, her diagnosis changed from "food allergy" to pneumonia. WHOA that's a big difference. Oh, by the way, the first X-ray costs $240 there, which I think was some ridiculous number. Dr. Andrews then subscribed her with both Baytril and amoxicillin and even suggested that "If you actually got her from a breeder here, I would suggest that you go back to the breeder and return the puppy." WHAT!? I mean, we came to see a vet because we wanted to treat our puppy, not to hear your opinion on how you think we should give her back! I thought it was extremely unprofessional and disrespectful for her to say that, especially if she didn't know what kind of history we had with our puppy and how much we love and are devoted to her. Total bill came up to $400 and not even an apology of "ooops sorry the first diagnosis was wrong." since after reading all the information about pneumonia online, I was very certain that tofu has had it for awhile and it definitely didn't just pop out in the past few days. Before we left, Dr. Andrews came out and asked us to take her back for a re-check next week, and she also said "don't worry, re-check xrays are much cheaper... usually around $180". WTF? It's not about the money, why are you talking as if you are just afraid that we couldn't afford to pay or something!? Anyway. We went home and just for peace of mind, I googled Baytril online and see what kind of antibiotics it was. It turned out that a lot of English bulldog owners expressed explicit concern of pneumonia and how Baytril shouldn't be given to puppies under 6 months because it could create serious joint pain and bone issue. I was furious. I told my husband there was no way I would let tofu take that pill, and I would take a day off and drove her to Riverside to have Dr. Butchko look at her. The next day, we were off to Riverside, and after 3 hrs wait, we saw Dr. Butchko. They reaffirmed my concern by saying it is too early to have puppies take Baytril, and they prescribed tofu the liquid form of clavamox, which was what we asked for but couldn't get at Foothill Vet hospital originally. They were very thorough, very knowledgeable about English bullies (I saw about 10 bullies there waiting to be seen in the 3 hr period...), prescribed a few meds that would help tofu breathe and relieve mucus, and for another detailed x-ray checkup and various meds, the total bill came up to $234, which was very much to my surprise. I thought it would be like $600 or $800 based on my experience at Foothill Vet... but x-rays at Dr. Butchko is only $85, and apparently they don't overcharge for medications. After the whole experience, I told my husband that if we were to continue to bring tofu to Foothill Vet, after 3 months, we will most likely end up with $6000 hospital bill and a dead dog. If you have an English bulldog, do not go to Foothill vet hospital for respiratory problems!! read more

Please, if you love your dog, don't ever board them here. I asked the staff about the boarding program and they told me it was great and the dogs loved it there. So, I took my dog to board here on several occasions and she always hated it and I couldn't understand why. She would scream and lose her voice because she was so happy to see us when we picked her up. I started to get suspicious. So at the next vet appointment, I asked for a tour of the facilities and what an average day in the life of a boarded dog was like. It was awful. They keep the dogs in tiny, cramped cages ALL day and night in their own feces and urine. They let them out for 1 hour a day, and not even outside, but in a concrete runner with no windows or sunlight. I was told that all the dogs are taken for walks once a day, but with further prodding, found out that only the dogs whose owners specifically request walks are taken outside. They feed them cheap dog food that's filled with additives and animal byproducts. My dog wouldn't even eat it and lost weight while she was there. If you care about your pet at all, I beg you not to take them here. A great alternative in the area is Heavenly Pet Resort in West Covina. It charges the same price for boarding, but is a luxury resort for pets. My dog loves it so much, we went to pick her up and she wanted to run back inside to play. read more

We had a great experience with Dr. Kwan. He was very knowledgeable and gentle with our pup, who was diagnosed with Kennel Cough. It was our first visit to VCA Foothill and we will for sure be coming back should we ever need to. Initially, I was concerned that our dog would have to undergo unnecessary, stressful tests, but Dr Kwan told us to keep an eye on him and that if his symptoms don't improve in the next couple of days , then to bring him back for tests. He was prescribed antibiotics, and he is feeling much better already. Side note--Dr Kwan did tell us that should the Kennel Cough be viral instead of bacterial, then the antibiotics wouldn't help, so most likely his infection is bacterial. read more

I boarded my dog here for a long weekend and they did a great job, plus in my opinion, pretty inexpensive ($22/night). If you're just planning to board, make sure to bring your dogs immunization history and they will also require an influenza shot (they offered at about $35, I think). Also, if you pick up your dog between 7:30-8am, they won't charge you for the day (I got there at 7:45am)! If it's your first time, they will require your dog to see the vet for an exam, which is free of charge. I'm considering transferring vets to this place cause my current vet doesn't offer boarding and I had a good experience. read more

foothill vet did not do our cat, shifty, any justice by failing to diganose her problems properly. instead she was constantly sent home with mediciation every time we had to visit them and "oh, it's just a cold. don't worry about it." we ended up visiting tlc in south pasadena based on a referral from the foothill for an ultrasound. it turned out our poor shifty had terminal cancer and we regretattably put her to sleep at tlc. but i will never forget how coldly we were treated at foothill vet. shame on you. read more

I sit here trying to find the right words to express how wonderful this place has been during the past eight years. They took such good care of my little pup from when we first moved to Pasadena in his youth, through his middle age, and finally his end of life. We had been to many vets over the years (before we found Foothill, when we needed specialists, etc.) and these folks are hands down the best! - Well visits and sick visits -- so great to be able to come without an appointment! They have handled everything from teeth-cleaning to the more serious and breed-related chronic ailments that plagued our little guy as he aged. Their prices were very reasonable, the staff friendly, and the vets always fantastic. We frequently saw Dr. Beyer, who is really wonderful, but over the years saw most of the other vets and have really liked them as well. - Boarding -- We boarded our little guy with them many times, both in his youth and in old age. In his youth, it was when we couldn't find friends to watch him when we went out of town (holidays, etc.). Later, as he became older and blind, we boarded him because we knew he needed closer care and didn't want to impose. The folks took such good care of him, cuddling him in arms and keeping him in a special high-attention area because of his special care needs. - Euthanasia -- Thank you, Dr. Robert Bell, for your wisdom, your compassion, and the way you handled one of life's most painful moments. It was time for our dog, and we knew it, but we were heartbroken about it. I was a mess. Dr. Bell was so gentle and kind. I held my dog as he drifted to sleep. He was peaceful. He did not suffer. And I was able to say goodbye without feeling rushed. The office staff also handled things respectfully. They remembered my dog from his prior boarding/visits, and they appeared genuinely sad, too. And they were kind enough to send me a sympathy card. Again, thank you to everyone at Foothill Veterinary Hospital for taking care of our dog during times of health and sickness, and to Dr. Bell in particular for helping us say goodbye when it was time. read more

Very good care for my 4 animals, 2 cats, 2 dogs. The wait is never too long and I have received nothing but respectful, helpful care. They don't push expensive tests and treatments, but they do cover all the bases. Don't look for fancy decor or overly friendly desk staff, but who cares? They get the job done and aren't exactly rude outright. They are probably working very hard and focused on what they are doing. They move a lot of animals through there and somehow manage not to take forever. I like them. read more

I'm torn between writing a good review and a crappy review! My first initial visit was for my pure white female German Shepherd she had a uti and they were open at 730am and allowed walk-ins, perfect! Since my other vet that I always go to and have paid thousands of dollars to couldnt hold my appt even though I was 10 behind due to extremely bad traffic that I sat in for 1 hour to get my dog there thanks TLC you guys rock :P. I was grateful for VCA and they took care of her uti although I overheard the vet ask another vet that she wasn't sure which antibiotics to give she was debating between clavamox and amoxicillin but didn't know which one was more effective lol and we were sent home with clavamox antibiotics that day. My white German Shepherd did fine the next day so yay kudos VCA! Today! I had called in trying to get my other dog who is 14 yrs old an ultrasound because his test results indicated a mass in his liver. Every specialist was booked and I had called VCA inquiring if they do specialty ultrasounds and explained my dog's test results. The front office confirmed that they do and that I needed to be in prior to 11:30am to see the doctor. I rushed there and to my disappointment I was met by DR STEIN who is ambivalent to his job and is not even knowledgeable in his position. Verbatim "I don't know ..we can't do that here, we don't have that type of machine ...and did you check anywhere else? ....There's only one doctor that can conduct an ultrasound but I don't know if she FEELS like doing it today let me go see..." seriously?! I spoke with front staff and they all had to reassure each other and then confirm that they cannot run speciality ultrasounds so thanks for wasting my time and the vets here are not as knowledgeable as other vets I've taken my dogs to. Sorry to say but your hard earned money can be well spent somewhere else with vets that are more compassionate and knowledgeable in their profession and maybe they can afford to hire non air-headed staff members. read more

As much as I love reading reviews, I am not a regular contributor. It takes a lot for me to write a review. Which brings me to this. VCA did a phenomenal job with my situation. About a month ago, I arrived with our cat about 20 minutes after they opened. Because I had to put our cat down, I think they realized out distraught I was. I mentioned to the front desk I was here to put my cat down and they immediately put me in room, no wait. Dr. Mary Jo Andrews entered the room right away. She was very compassionate and walked me through the procedure. After the procedure, she gave me as much time as I needed with our cat. Once I was ready, I went to the front desk to pay for the procedure. They said 'no need'. The staff and doctor was very kind and caring. They made the difficult experience as painless as possible for both me and our cat. Thank you very much VCA. read more

I took Riki my mom's Shih tzu in for 1st time to Foothill we walk in and it was great from the start. We were seen probably within 15 mins. Riki needed a little tumor on eyelid removed and teeth extractions and cleaning. I asked for an estimate of cost and was pleasantly surprised for I had taken Riki to a Vet on Lake in Alltadena and was told in writing that it would be 1,700.00 dollars so I was prepared.The cost at FVH was $588.00. 1,100, LESS Procedure was done this morning Dr Andrews just called and said Riki is doing great and I can pick him at 3:30: Mom is waiting. This is a vet with a heart. The employees treat every customers pet as if it was their own. On the recommendation of my neighbor I started coming to this place or a place on Myrtle Avenue (in Monrovia) when I moved here in 1965. Since then I've had an Afghan Hound, a full size TriColor Collie, a Husky-Lab mix, a mixed-breed stray cat, and a poodle-terrier mix (all rescues). The doctors here have taken care of all of them, and I wouldn't be a lifetime customer if they weren't good, honest and caring. Highly recommended. read more

I have been taking my two dogs there since I got them ten years ago. From the very first appointment they told me that my chihuahua had a heart murmur and nothing more. I'm not a vet, I don't know what treatments there are for this condition. Well, three week ago, my beloved dog of ten years had a cardiac arrest and died in my arms in front of my two kids and my husband! We have been so devastated that my son had two anxiety attacks and I took him to urgent care for an EKG! My other dog is so depressed, she won't eat, walk or even lift her head when I come home. The image of his suffering face and his body movements will haunt us for the rest of our lives. A few days later my neighbor told me that his dog has a heart murmur and he's 17 years old and on medication. Not Once! did any of the numerous doctors I've seen in ten years ever mention to me about medication. Thank you Foothill Vet for contributing to his death and the misery of my family! read more

Foothill Veterinary Hospital was there when I needed them. We are new to the Pasadena area and my two Brussels Griffon were not feeling well during the night (no sleep for me...) and I hadn't yet found a new vet for them due to our new move. I made a few calls to local veterinary hospital and couldn't get an appointment for a few days......... I called Foothill at 9am and was told to come in as they only make appointments for surgeries. I got my dogs to the office and after filling out some paperwork was seen within 10 minutes. Everyone was super nice and professional. Office was clean as was the waiting area (I am a stickler for this!) Pricing was very fair as well. I am very satisfied with this office and will make this our local vet :) And, they carry my dog's Royal Cainin diet. Perfect ! read more

Dr Beyer saved my cat's life last year when he was dehydrated and refusing to eat and drink. For that, this vet gets five stars. In addition, when I first called this vet during my cat emergency, the hold music told me their location, their hours and most importantly, that walk-ins were accepted! I felt so welcome during my time of crisis. Since then, I've come to learn you never need an appointment, just show up! I love the freedom that brings. Also, I love that there are multiple animal doctors on staff so your animal will always be seen and quickly! The lobby is sometimes really packed with friendly animal lovers and mostly smells like a wet dog, but it comes with the territory. LOL read more

I arrived this morning to pick her up after being boarded for the weekend. No greeting at the front counter. Nothing, zip. Not a "be right with you" nothing. Just a couple of overworked people typing madly. After (finally) paying I had to wait for the dog to be brought up. When our dog was finally brought out I was handed a soaking wet leash. My dog's feet and legs were wet -- funny since she didn't have a bath. Turned out everything stunk of dog urine. Absolutely and completely revolting. I did not return to complain because of the attitude I'd encountered earlier. But I did call, only to be put on hold. I feel terrible that I put my poor dog through this. We used to board here regularly with no problem but had not for several years. What happened? This is not the way to treat animals. read more
