Berwyn is the middle child of the Veekoo family; Royersford being the oldest sibling, Bryn Mawr the youngest. For over ten years, I've been something of a semi-regular at both the Royersford and Berwyn locations; most recently, however, my dining partner and I have spent more time at the latter. In contrast to the homey atmosphere of the Royersford outpost, the ambiance here is stylishly chic in tone. Rich mahogany & black leather highlight the main dining area while hanging beaded room dividers and a creamy white rear wall add intriguing touches of textural contrast. Just to the right of the entrance is a more diminutive dining space dominated by a sleek high-top seven-seat sushi bar. I don't know who was responsible for the striking interior décor, but he/she/they did a splendid job of understating the case. Minimalist is the word that comes immediately to mind. Berwyn's décor notwithstanding, the draw here has always been the superior quality of the pan-Asian cuisine. My dining partner and I have some fond memories... Starters like the Tuna Tataki and Lettuce Wraps (pictured), for instance. The former featuring thin slices of black pepper seared tuna bathed in a pungent yuzu sauce; the latter headlining either diced chicken or shrimp companioned by a rich viscous hoisin. And entrées were equally up to the mark... presentations such as Salt-Baked Flounder, Black Pepper Filet Mignon, and Jumbo Shrimp with a colorful array of crunchy vegetables, for instance. Chicken in Black Bean Sauce was always my perpetual favorite... That is, until I tasted the Lemon Chicken. A white meat breast was pounded thin, lightly battered, and then gently sautéed until the crust reached a crispy consistency. It was then cut into bite-size pieces, garnished with slices of orange, and accompanied by a ramekin of the chef's special lemon-orange sauce. The chicken was incomparably tender, the sauce adding just the proper combo of sweetness and spice. But all of the above transpired a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away - or so it seems (ten years ago, to be absolutely precise). Things have changed significantly; and, judging by several recent visits, not for the better. Consider, for instance, a relatively simple conglomeration of house-made pork wontons, chicken broth, and scallions, Wonton Soup. In even the humblest of Asian eateries, this would be considered a no-brainer. And yet... the Veekoo rendition was, very simply, the bland-leading-the-bland. In other words, anything even approximating flavor was conspicuous by its absence. Moving on to the entrées, my Lo Mein - egg noodles garnished with eggs, shredded carrots, shredded cabbage & scallions - was garnished with vegetables (as opposed to other meaty options) and about as exciting as the above-mentioned Wonton Soup, which is to say, not at all. My dining partner, who is something of a devotee of General Tso's Chicken - deep-fried chicken in a sweet/spicy, savory sauce - considered Veekoo's version a good deal less than impressive. I don't mean to imply that the cuisine here is "bad." It is not. However, in my humble opinion, the overall quality of the food certainly seems to have deteriorated over time. What was once considered first-class is now barely squeaking by as economy coach. For veteran Veekoo diners - this writer included - the difference is all too palpable. The same may be said for the service. During our most recent visit, for example, we had barely started our appetizers when up pops our Speedy Gonzales server with the entrées. This is a practice I have soundly criticized in previous reviews; and it is usually the result of a server's inexperience or poor training. Here, however, we received the distinct impression that management's desire to turn over tables as quickly as possible definitely took precedence over diners' comfort. My friend and I dined here for lunch on Friday. We were a little early for our 11:45 reservation, but were seated immediately, as we were the first guests of the day. As soon as you walk in the door, the restaurant is beautiful and has a cool, classy ambience. Everything, including the restrooms, was clean and well maintained. The gentleman who seated us was also our server. I'm not sure if he had a rough morning, or was annoyed that we showed up early, but he was not friendly. No smile, all business. Despite his lack of personality, he was very attentive, got our order correct, and kept our water glasses filled -- all of which we were appreciative of! We started with the Szechuan dumplings, which were very tasty and had just the right amount of spicy heat. We both got the lunch special with 2 sushi rolls (I got spicy tuna and spicy crabmeat) plus miso soup. Everything was delicious and served at the proper temperature, and the food came out pretty quickly. As we were leaving, there was a nice woman at the host stand, and she warmly thanked us for coming, which made up for the otherwise awkward service! We eat here regularly! Great, reasonable BYOB, and if you have a few sushi/ sashimi lovers in your group, I highly recommend "The Loveboat!" Our friends usually go with a Chinese dish here (big Mu Shu pork fans, but they have all the standards ) The Chilean Sea Bass dish is moist, mouthwatering, with a savory ginger scallion sauce. I've been on the Main Line over a decade now and somehow never found this Asian cuisine gem before! Tucked unassumingly into a strip mall, Veekoo was a big surprise inside with a sushi bar, an upscale atmosphere and major flavor bombs. We got there early on the dinner side so were able to get a table- but I would recommend reservations if you're going peak time as it filled up and seemed like the norm. They have cocktail and specials menus along with very extensive dish lists and sushi options. While they seem to do plenty of take out, do not mistake this as another greasy take out joint- the jasmine rice and happy family dish was saturated in flavors and proteins. Service was very solid and while it got a bit loud when it got crowded inside, my expectations were surpassed and it's definitely now on my rotation list! read more

Raised the prices a ton here. I know prices have gone up everywhere but three dishes for takeout at almost $100 for chicken and vegetables and an app is crazy. I used to take it but the food was just ok this time. Chicken lettuce wraps with almost no chicken - my wife and I both looked through it - all filler almost no chicken. I love Veekoo. I live and work nearby and grab take-out for lunch or dine-in for dinner on a weekly basis. I have been able to try an assortment of options from their menu and have enjoyed almost everything I have tried! The sushi is amazing! It cannot be beat. The only down side would be the cost, however it is VERY worth it. I love their ocean roll and regularly get the classic California roll and add cream cheese. One of my favorite meals I have ever ordered from a restaurant is Veekoo's fried rice with shrimp and chicken that is served in a pineapple. It is so delicious! I have attempted to recreate this dish at home, but nothing compares. My only complaint would be that on occasion the chicken, in the dishes like Kung Pao Chicken or Chicken with Broccoli, seems as if it might not be fresh. It can get that kind of rubbery texture which is a huge turn-off for me. This is not always the case, but it has happened a few times. Veecoo Berwyn, Pa is a pan Asia restaurant. It is not large but the menu has many selections.The sushi selections are abundant. We all ordered different items. They were well prepared and quite good. The service was slow but cheerful. I recommend their menu.The one drawback was the noise level was extremely loud making conversation difficult. I would have given them four stars but because of the noise which limited conversation I dropped one star. It might be better to go to lunch rather than dinner. I ordered Szechuan dumplings and sesame chicken, which unfortunately I wasn't a huge fan of. The dumplings were really bland. The sesame chicken was also super bland and the sauce had zero flavor. Definitely a fan of VeeKoo Asian Cuisine in Berwyn. Easy drive from the Wayne area and plenty of off street parking within the shopping center. My party of 2 was seated immediately and the atmosphere inside is very modern and clean looking. They have a very large menu with both Japanese and Chinese inspired cuisine. The evening we went we were on the Japanese team as far as food. It is impossible to not find something you would enjoy eating at VeeKoo. I shared my dinner with my husband and we loved each item. Some must dos: -Sashimi Appetizer (9pcs. Assorted Sashimi) -Veekoo roll - White tuna and crispy rice with spicy sauce and tobiko and scallions I guess I don't know what I was expecting "crispy rice" was, but basically the roll was fried and crunchy on the outside, but tasty white tuna on the inside. I typically would rather have my white tuna sashimi style, but the roll sounded interesting and I wanted to give it a whirl. If you like crunchy it is a great roll. I will probably try something different next time. The sashimi appetizer was fabulous with very gracious portions. I know there is another review mentioning too much fat on the salmon pieces, but mine were okay. We also ordered the usual suspects: California, philly, and salmon/avocado and was very satisfied by the portions of the fish provided in the rolls. The customer service was as expected: cordial but not overbearing. Would definitely recommend this place to anyone in the area looking for great sushi at decent prices. read more

This place cuts corners now. I stopped coming my regular 2-3 times a week when they served me salmon that was not sushi grade. I tried giving them a second chance recently and they blew it. Again they used salmon that should have never made it in their kitchen to begin with. There's only one way to make sushi and that's with the freshest, highest quality of product available..not factory farmed salmon like Veekoo uses now. I did return my takeout meal and received a gift card for the balance. Though I'm still disappointed at the rude attitude of the employee that checked me out and handled this issue. She laughed in my face and assured me that "everybody loves the fat." Eat a piece of raw salmon that's 50% fat and tell me it tastes good then I'll believe you! It was a late night, and we needed sushi stat! After yelping, we came upon Veekoo. We were in the mood for a good sushi and that we give it a try. The place is pretty empty when we walked in, I hope that's not the norm. The waiters that we had both mumbled... service wasn't their forte. We started with a veggie spring roll app, you get one whole spring roll. Kinda wack, wish they could've at least cut it for us to share. Watch out for that we ordered A few rolls of sushi, but nothing really impressed us. Overall the experience was kind of just bleh. The food just wasn't good. I ordered dumplings and they had no taste, the egg roll was frozen inside and the two dinners we had sweet and sour chicken and Thai curry chicken were both horrible. This place is very over priced as well. There are so many other Asian restaurants in the area that take pride in their food this just isn't one of them. Maybe their sushi is better but after eating the Chinese portion of the menu I would be worried about getting sick from eating something raw there. read more

Had a fabulous dinner with an old friend at Veekoo on his suggestion. Our waitress was new, in only her second week, but anything she wasn't sure about menu-wise she was quick to ask for help and apologize. We started with a sushi-sashimi-california roll combo platter and split a hot and sour soup, and then enjoyed the scallion pancakes and the szechuan rack of lamb. Veekoo has become my go-to since Shangrila in Devon closed. Their sushi is great and they always get my order correctly, even when I have special requests! My only complaint is that the food is a wee bit pricey although not anymore than Shagnrila was... although I don't see as much of a variety of options of Veekoo's menu. The food was just ok, I was a bit underwhelmed. I came here with my entire family and we all ordered different dishes from around the menu. I have heard from friends and family that this is a good place to go for sushi and other types of Asian food. Although there is a large variety in types of cuisine offered, the food was not particularly remarkable (it was similar to some mid / lower tier Asian restaurants I have been to on the mainline). The best part of the meal was the sushi, which was not incredible but still good quality. The roll I had had tempura shrimp, salmon, and avocado in it. I went on a Thursday evening with one of my colleagues. From the outside, it looks a little bare and uninteresting. I went inside and and waited while my colleague was finishing up a call outside. There was a very long padded/comfortable bench that could hold a whole bunch of people which is nice for the busier nights. When we were both ready, we walked in and was immediately greeted by the hostess. It wasn't busy at all so we were seated in no time. It was absolutely beautiful inside. It looked extremely fancy and I wasn't really expecting that. Service was quick but I was a little bothered that they frequently came to ask us how we were doing. If it was once or twice, it would be okay. Our conversation was interrupted more than necessary in my opinion. The food was okay. I purchased the Pineapple fried rice which included shrimp and chicken. The size of the shrimp was just glorious and they didn't skimp! Veekoo has really DECLINED. Besides now being painted a boring light grey...There was 1 server there tonight for Valentine's with 2 large tables (parties of 5-6) and 3 deuces at about 8 pm. We had reservations. New servers need training, and to learn about the foods' heritage, how it is prepared so that they can further educate guests as appropriate. The service was UNDER-remarkable, and management did not seem to care! Our Sashimi appetizer, soups, and seaweed salad took forever to even place the order. The salad arrived first. The sashimi was presented without soy sauce on the table. The soups arrived lukewarm with the bowls very unevenly filled. The king crab miso had a dusting of fibery crab flakes. No pieces of crab in the soup and no real crab flavor. Upon heating, they were returned 1 by 1 separately. Dinner items/platters were placed on the table without serving utensils. The rack of Lamb portions were very thin! The price of the eggplant vegetable side dish was high but it was the most flavorful item we received. read more
