Open floor emergency room with exam tables in the middle but a few closed off rooms
    Brillian Q.

I'm leaving a 4 star review simply for the employees at this place. I can tell this is a stressful job but they do it because they love animals. All that being said, it is the strangest Vet ER I've ever been to. It's an open floor layout with exam tables in the center area. So while waiting you have to hear the collective yelps of dogs in pain. There are people like crying and it's kind of everything that seems like the worst parts of the job amplified & a very chaotic feeling space. I have a cat who is terrified of dogs. I let the staff know though and while all of their (I think 3?) rooms were full, they were able to do the exam with me in the corner on a chair away from the dogs. The doctor was so sympathetic and was the same person I was on the phone with earlier when I was debating bringing him in. ER Rooms are notoriously expensive and I had a vet appointment the next day at 2pm. I always feel like vets at ER's are just trying to recommend the most so they can just charge a bunch of money and cover their asses if something doesn't get diagnosed that they did everything. But this vet was understanding and like okay here's what we can do until your appointment tomorrow & she related to me about her own cat with IBD which made me feel so relieved because I feel like most vets & vet research is dog focused. When it came to the fluids and medicine I again asked if I could have my own exam room fully expecting the answer to be no and being okay with that and just trying to traumatize my cat the least amount possible. But the assistant actually went out of her way to move things around for my cat to have things done in a quiet room away from dogs. So my honest review is it seems like a somewhat underfunded place that is constantly overworked but the staff there does the job because they care about the animals. I would rather have an underfunded / chaotic ER room nearby than having to drive super far away in case of emergencies. I appreciate that they are in Hoboken and hope they can get some better facilities in the future. EDIT: The staff followed up with me regarding the open floor layout! This is something they are known for because of transparency purposes. I let them know that I think that it may be a good thing for dogs but kinda is not great for most cats. Most cats already hate being taken out of their homes and are anxious enough going to the vet. Adding more animals surrounding them while they are already sick is soooo stressful. They let me know they were glad for the feedback and will try and to get patients boundaries sooner if the open floor plan doesn't work for them. Will definitely come back if my cat needs to be given fluids again though :) so not underfunded just trying a different approach to ER rooms lol

We had been to VEG several years ago with our pet Ragdoll cat Rocky. We had a wonderful experience at that time and could not say enough about the wonderful care Rocky received over the course of several days. On 4/29/2025 Rocky suddenly became ill in respiratory distress . Because it was later in the evening our vet was closed so we returned to VEG. I have to admit being a nurse for 45 years in Hoboken I knew he wasn't going to come back home and I could not handle it. My husband and daughter took him to VEG where he received immediate medical attention. After bloodwork, X-rays and an examine it was determined Rocky was in heart failure with an enlarged heart and fluid in both lungs. After consulting with my family and the wonderful medical team led by Dr. Lindsey I knew I had to do what was best for Rocky. Although it was the hardest decision I had to make in my life as that was my baby I knew it was the right one. Thank you to Dr. Lindsey and the VEG staff for the wonderful care you provided to Rocky. Thank you for treating him with kindness , digniand compassion and making his end of life easy. Thank you all for treating us with kindness and understanding and knowing how difficult of a decision this was. Although it has been difficult and we will need time to heal , we thank you all for everything you have done. God bless you all always.

I took my dog to the vet this weekend because someone hit her with their car. They told me they wouldn't treat her without payment upfront, and then they only gave her an injection and X-rays. She needs surgery, and they wanted me to take her to the hospital they recommended. I told them I couldn't afford something so expensive ($13,000), and they said no other vet could perform the surgery. I told them I would take her to my regular vet for the operation, and after that, they completely neglected my dog. They didn't even splint her leg or mark which one was fractured; I had to ask if they could give me something for the pain, and they charged me $400 for a bottle of medication. I paid almost $2,200 for the X-rays and the injection, and they didn't even send me the test results; I had to call to get them. The first time I took her there, they were very nice, but this time I realized they only care about the money, not the animals.

Had to put my cat down as he was suffering from cancer and respiratory failure and have never been treated with more kindness and compassion from the Dr and staff. They were amazing and made a terrible experience bearable. Don't go anywhere else!!!!

They saved our cat by taking out a 13 inch string accidentally swallowed. Thank them a lot

On Sunday evening, I took my senior Chihuahua to VEG Chelsea. A vet tech quickly took her weight and temperature but did not ask why we were there or take any other history. We were placed in a room in the back with a window to the main area where I could see lots of staff members. After 45 minutes of waiting with no updates or anyone checking on my dog, I went out to ask if they might have an estimate of when the vet might see us and was told a few minutes, but this proved not to be true and I watched that vet leave for the evening. Around the two-hour mark, I heard a staff member tell the new vet that everyone was triaged. I was surprised because no one had asked what brought us to the ER. I spoke with a staff member in the hallway and explained that we'd been waiting for two hours with no one taking my dog's history or checking on her, and I told her that I was disappointed by the lack of communication. Before we could discuss it, another staff member interrupted and told me that my dog's temperature and weight were the triage and she asked what I expected since one veterinarian had just left and another had just arrived. I understand that ERs have to prioritize certain patients, and I was not upset about waiting. However, I felt dismissed when I waited for two hours with no one providing us updates or checking on my dog. A little bit of communication would have gone a long way. I found the staff member's response to my concerns very condescending, and so my dog and I left. For those reasons, I would not recommend this ER and next time will visit one of the many others available in our city.

To have the entire staff be so caring, attending, comforting, and professional, is truly a one in a million situation. When I came in with an emergency with my little pup, Dr. Diego Milano kept a clear mind, an empathetic attitude, and a compassionate heart. He took such good care of my boy, my gratitude is too much to vocalize. once we were checked in to our room, he checked on my baby every 10-15 minutes, made sure both of us were ok, and stayed on top of our situation even though I heard multiple critical situations happening outside. He balanced everything so well and i really take my hat off to him. he was amazing. As for the overnight nurse, Caroline, I'm at a loss for words for how golden her heart is. She took such good care of both me and my baby. She understood the anxiety an owner feels going through this situation and went out of her way to ensure i was doing good too. she checked on my baby every 10 minutes. any time i needed to step away to use the bathroom, she stayed with my baby. she was so gentle and kind with him. you can tell shes doing her job out of passion and care. Shes one of a kind and truly a gem. I could cry just writing about the care she provided for us. When the shift changed to the daytime staff, I was a little worried about the transition and sad to see Caroline and Dr. Milano go. I was worried about who was going to take care of us now because of the genuine top tier care we had received, how could you match that? but. they did. Dr. Andre and nurse Christina were our doctor and nurse after the shift change. They were just as kind, just as compassionate, just as professional, and just as empathetic. They made the night to day transition so smooth. They were completely filled in, treated me with just as much respect and empathy, and had me crying tears of joy as I left this hospital. I can't speak enough kind words for this facility and the entire staff. Even when my nurse or doctor were helping other patients, other nurses made themselves readily available and willing to help me and my baby and make us feel comfortable and ok. This was truly one of the hardest nights of my entire life but this facility and the staff working here made it manageable. For the staff reading this, I thank you again and send you my kindest regards. You guys are truly angels and what you're doing is a beautiful thing and your hearts are made of gold. Thank you all.

If your pet has an actual emergency, a complex health issue, or multiple health concerns, this is not the place. If you're in the UES, just go to the Animal Medical Center. I brought my cat here thinking maybe it would be OK, but I ended up waiting a minimum of 20 minutes without being seen. My own vet actually called me while I was there to follow-up regarding prior treatment. When I told him where I was, he advised me to go to the Animal Medical Center which is very close. The issue is that only one veterinarian available, so when you're seen depends on how busy it is. A bigger hospital has multiple vets and vet techs on staff, so they can see multiple animals at the same time. The staff was friendly, but they seem easily distracted and overly cheerful, like it was an office party. This is meant to be an ER. Sometimes you need people to be serious. They have a big board where they supposedly do triage, but I don't believe they really take pets according to level of care needed. For some reason, my pet's name never made it up onto the board, so I kept waiting for the vet to take a look. They kept saying they had really sick pets to see first. (My cat stayed at the AMC for 3 days and 2-3 nights.) Eventually I up and left because my cat needed to be seen right away and they kept skipping over us and telling us they'd get to us, which did not happen. When I was leaving, the receptionist was trying to get me to stay even though we were never seen. I really don't know what kind of health issues would warrant a visit here versus an actual vet emergency room. Having been to AMC, I can't say I would ever come back or recommend this type of facility.

What an incredible group of people!…read more My dog is susceptible to pneumonia and when he had a wet cough on a Sunday, I knew it couldn't wait for his primary vet on Monday. In the past we went ton other emergency vets and unfortunately it was always a long wait, you were away from your dog the entire time, and they wouldn't release your dog to you until after you paid. VEG is different than all those places. We were seen immediately and while they do have an open concept ER, they gave us a private room just in case. The nurse (Diana) and the vet (Dr. Schwartz) were all incredible. They took such good care of our dog and us! They allow you to be with your pet during X-rays which I found amazing. No paying first then waiting for your pet to be discharged. You're as hands on as you're comfortable being. Amazing place.

The behavior this practice has exhibited has been avoidant, evasive and disappointing. I called distressed after my dog was having complications healing from surgery after a lipoma removal. We arrived on a busy Sunday and were taken at the end of a triage. During our time there I voiced to MULTIPLE techs that my dog was bleeding through his gauze. 2/3 responses were a deadpan stare and the words "ok". It took 3 times of me asking/ pleading for someone to listen to me. Even then I was armed with loose gauze and a wee wee pad. When we were finally seen I was so relieved i let this all fall away. I was so happy my pet was taken care of I went home following their orders and protocol. The next day I realized all the sutures at the site had fallen out and we were back at square one after spending hundreds of dollars. Naturally I was upset and placed a call to the location. I was placed on an infinite hold 3 times with no answer until i called from my friend's phone to which they picked up immediately. I have been calling every day since Monday with not a single person giving me a call back or without any financial compensation for the negligent job they did. I have given them since Monday to give me a call back and fix this. I've called every day without a call back. So if you don't care about your pets or spending unnecessary money this is the place for you!

He got me through some REALLY tough times over the past ten years, and honestly I'm not sure how I would have gotten through the pandemic without him. So knowing his time with me was coming to a close, I left it in his hands to tell me when it was time to go. And, unfortunately, that was the day he woke up and his eyes said simply, "Enough." The staff was attentive and kind from the jump. An examination revealed the options, but it was obvious that whatever was happening was quite serious - and I was given a breakdown of potential next steps. Of course with Sid's age, putting him down was also an option, and I already knew this is what we were going with. I did not receive any pressure to run any preliminary tests, procedures, or additional costs. I was simply told what the options were, and provided with an honest opinion of what the outcomes could be. And all options sucked. BUT it was obvious that the people helping me genuinely cared, and it made the heartbreak just a tiny bit easier. I had never had to do this before and I came in with Sid alone, so the vet guided me through what we were doing, what was next, and gave me ample time in between to say goodbye. Again, no real way to make these things less painful, but there was something in the attention and care I was receiving that made me feel like I wasn't going through it alone. The staff was going through it with me. I also received a beautiful card in the mail from them afterwards, hand-signed with a personal message from each - and this small gesture brought such warmth to my heart that I felt I had to share it. Highly recommend this place.

I spent 3+ hours there but it didn't feel like it. I was able to be by his side the entire time, there was hydration and snacks, and I was comfortable. I feel like every nurse checked in with us at least once. Even my cat felt chill enough after a while to curl up and nap in his large cage (they were quite busy and all rooms were taken). As off Feb '25 it was $200 for just the most basic care, for what it's worth, and in our situation it was very much worth it. They sent everything to my usual vet, including recommended follow up testing. Flippin' awesome and so helpful for moving forward after a terrible Sunday!
