Bottom Line: Quick serve restaurant serving more than just veggies. Veggie Grill does have a lot of vegan and vegetarian options but they have plenty of variety for carnivores too. They also have lots of healthy options but if your heart desires, you can easily derail a healthy meal with fries or buttery bread. I like that Veggie Grill has a diverse menu including seasonal specialities. On my first trip I ordered the Chicken Milanese salad but I found the butter argula to be off-putting. Nevertheless, I do plan to go back and try something different. As far as logistics, this parking lot can be crazy at lunch time but much more calm in the evenings. You can call ahead or order at the counter. Everything is made fresh so it may be 15 minutes before your food is ready. You can grab a table and dine in or get it to go. read more

Oh man, I'm bummed because I had high hopes I would enjoy the food here. But I found what I got for what I paid just wasn't worth it and I won't be ordering from here again. I ordered the quinoa power salad (10.95) advertised as coming with quinoa, red onion, bell pepper, avocado, fennel, white beans, carrots, almonds, currants, mint, hemp seeds, kale and romaine. (Sounds hearty, but wasn't - more on that soon.) I also ordered the Brussels sprouts ($6.95) with picked red onion, which was listed as a "share plate." I wanted to give a couple of my co-workers a taste of the latter. The food arrived and (see pics) was skimpy and unimpressive. My salad included maybe four almonds, two avocado slices, and five beans. I didn't taste mint, fennel, or hemp seeds anywhere, and suspect they were left out. The salad reminded me of a (very slightly) glorified drive-through salad. There wasn't a lot of flavor to it either, and I was so pissed I spent $11 for a tasteless, non-hearty salad. In two visits to Veggie Grill (one here in Carlsbad and the other at UTC), I've had two versions of essentially the same dish: Buffalo "Chickin". In my first experience, I had the B-Wing Salad. Here the Chickin was presented over a bed of chopped Romaine, avocado, celery and corn salsa, with a drizzle of ranch dressing. I could have used more dressing, but overall I really enjoyed the salad... So much so that I didn't really notice too much that the "Chickin" isn't actually "chicken". I don't know how they do that. Had I not known about the Veggie Grill concept I might have believed this chickin was born to a mother hen via a nested egg just like chicken products have been for millennia. Yet with gums, pastes, sorcery and vegetable parts, humankind has come up with a convincing replacement. I'm not saying chickin's taste and texture are preferable to the real thing, but it is pretty cool that no animals were harmed to put my lunch on the table. The price point is high for what you get, but I think Veggie Grill (like its similarly oriented competitors) is a fun alternative to the traditional. My second Veggie Grill visit was to the UTC location. I had the same B-Wings, but this time they were on the Buffalo Bomber sandwich. I came upon a recommendation from a friend. The "Beyond Burger" seems like the most popular thing to order here so I ordered that and my friend ordered a chicken milanese salad. The prices were $12.95 for the beyond burger and $11.50 for the chicken milanese salad. Beverages were $2.35 each so the total came up to $31.40 for a meal for two which is above average. What you pay for here is quality, however it didn't seem high quality. My burger was leafed with cheap iceburg lettice and the burger beyond "meat" tasted like a wet hashbrown but it looked like a beef patty. The burger didn't taste awful, but it was definitely different. The meal was satisfying to me, but if I were to come in hungry, I would've been disappointed. My friend noticed that the leaves in her salad were not fresh. This place will take a negative hit on a star on freshness. For beverages, they have tea. The one I picked was a pineapple ginger which was sweet and ginger-like at the same time. I really enjoyed it. When your drink is low, you may get up and refill it at the beverage station. They had several selections including a strawberry lemonade among others. So how did it feel to eat vegetarian? Vegi and organic type of food demand a premium in price because of quality ingredients. This restaurant provides an alternative choice in dining if you're tired of the same stuff. The food is an acquired taste for sure. But giving up red meat for one day made me feel weaker the next day and it showed when I did my usual run on the treadmill the next morning. I'm not saying that everyone will feel like this, but it did affect me by giving me a noticeable and measurable decrease in performance on my usual 5K run on the treadmill. Is it worth coming back for more? The price is high, so maybe on special occasions. Definitely not a place I would come on a regular basis. Once again, a hit on the rip-off scale, minus one star. Parking? The parking lot is shared with numerous stores and restaurants, so it can be a bit challenging to park an over-sized vehicle or to park near the front of the restaurant in general. And for my 300th review... Vegan food is the way of the future. I'm not the first to make this bold prediction, but I sincerely believe that this is the direction we're all headed. First however, people as a whole need(ed) to get over the "V" word. I have done a ton of research into this lifestyle over the last year after learning that I needed to get a check on my cholesterol and there have been some odd and funny findings. I was introduced to a woman who makes truly incredible vegan cupcakes and cookies, who doesn't advertise as such, simply because people refuse to eat them because they are vegan, and for no other reason than that. They don't "look" vegan, they certainly don't "taste" vegan, but when slapping that word onto her confections, you would think that one of the primary ingredients was rat poison... Yes, there are people that give "vegan" a bad image. There are stereotypes on pretty much anything if you take them to the extreme. We can think of crazy sports fans, or crazy cat ladies, or crazy religious or political zealots...but when you get down to brass tacks, the average people that like sports, or cats, or religion, and politics are just like you and me- somewhat...normal. Vegan food is just that- pretty normal food which happens to not be made with animal products. Why is this place called "Veggie" grill and not "Vegan" grill? No one is trying to deceive anyone here, but they absolutely do want to reach a wider audience who to this point only know "vegan" as a derogatory term. The food at Veggie Grill? It's awesome. I can not say I have tried anything here that I haven't liked. The carne asada burrito is mouthwatering, the LUXE, Steakhouse, and Beyond burgers are outstanding and yes, all made without meat. My son finished his burger the first time we came here and said, "this is one of the best burgers I have ever had." I then told him that it was basically made of pea protein, and he didn't believe me for about an hour afterward. As I write this I'm looking over their menu in an attempt to remind myself of all the other amazing food I've tried between the bowls, salads, and sandwiches, and all I'm doing is reminding myself of all the things I have to go back and try (I'm looking at you, ramen). And I have to add a blurb about the customer service. Everyone in here is so nice and helpful, I actually look forward to engaging with them because the experience has always been so genuine. It's too bad that we have to disguise healthier food as unhealthier food in order to get people to eat it, but if that means that I get to enjoy a burger and fries without worrying about my cholesterol intake, I'm all over it. After getting sick from food on multiple occasions, my husband and I decided to try out the vegan diet. My husband works in Carlsbad and this place came up on Yelp. I was so excited to try it because the food looks so good in the pictures! We came in for a late lunch and were welcomed by the guy at the front who helped us out with the menu. I ordered the "fish" tacos and my husband ordered the Beyond burger. We also got the buffalo chicken to share. The buffalo chicken was so dang good! The ranch that it came with was so creamy and tasted great. I couldn't even tell it wasn't chicken. My "fish" tacos were served on corn tortillas and topped with cabbage, cilantro and baja sauce. I am IN LOVE. The tortillas were perfectly soft and the baja sauce was amazing. I couldn't believe how much I liked it. I wasn't really a fan of the black beans that came with it on the side but my husband ended up eating them so it was fine. My husband's burger was also delicious. We came here almost 2 months ago and I forgot to write a review while everything was fresh in my memory. No issues with the vegetarian burger I got. My only strong memory was that the kids didn't like the mac and cheese. It might have been because the cheese was vegan. They are not used to that. Not quite sure what vegan cheese is supposed to taste like but my kids rarely say mac and cheese is not good. Even the non-vegan adults thought it tasted different in an unfavorable way. Other than for the mac and cheese, we will return again especially because since they have a house made veggie patty and a black bean veggie patty, both alternatives I prefer to any impossible or beyond burger. I just wish I remembered which patty and burger I got. It would be cool if there was a non-vegan mac and cheese option but that might not align with the goal of the restaurant. I understand. What a great way to get the ball rolling in the quest to reduce meat consumption or maintain an already meat-free lifestyle. Our kids were able to experience healthier alternatives to their western diet favorites and became a fan. But with that said, things are a bit spicy off of the main menu (not sure about the kids because we got a lot of things to try/share). Everything we ordered was a very tasty. I wish I had known about Veggie Grill sooner, especially because my other favorite vegetarian/vegan place is a little far from me. I had the Pick a Pair with sweet potato fries and 1/2 All Hail Kale salad for about $9. Everything was yummy, and I thought half a salad might be too small but the portion size was just fine. You get a large bowl of fries too, though I wish they came with more dipping sauce. I haven't tried their meat substitutes so I can't speak to that. I stopped in for lunch and grabbed a "pick-a-pair" with Mac-n-cheese and Savory Kale Caesar. Without real cheese, the mac just tasted too different for my taste. It uses organic, non-GMO rice pasta and bread crumbs. And the "savory" caesar was okay...even bordering on good though the Tempeh "bacon" was a little strange. Even though it doesn't show, I'm a big huge fan of eating healthy and I am so happy that VeggieGrill is now avaliable in Carlsbad!! I came here on a preview night by invite only and I am excited to say that I will be returning back here! We were greeted by a female server who took our invites and gave us a menu and also broke down what the restaurant is about and the food that they serve here. We also met the a man from the advertising team (who I wish was a little friendly and introduced himself, but hello, you are representing the company!!!!) My friend and I ordered our food with some helpful recommendations and we were given some drinks as well. As you tell from the pictures I posted, there is no soda here! I had the pomegranate green tea and my friend had the strawberry lemonade. I wish the strawberry lemonade was a little stronger and flavorful. We were greeted by a manager named Andrew. He talked with us about some of the food and explained how they are a 100% plant based restaurant. They use no GMOs, they have no trans-fats, and cholesterol. You can totally eat here guilt free!! I love it!! The staff went through an intensive 5 day training and gave excellent recommendations to the menu! I ordered the "crab" cake burger which had an excellent punch of spice from the tartar sauce on top. It wasn't too much that it over powered the taste of the crab but it was just right!! My friend had the Papa's Portobello which was cooked to perfection and had the right amount of flavor.
