Found this place on happy cow while in the area. We ordered salt & pepper fresh mushroom (it says fresh mushrooms but they're fresh mushrooms that have been coated and fried), mixed vegetable fried rice and vegan sesame chicken. The salt & pepper fried mushrooms are suuuper good. I think they're beech mushrooms. The coating is not too thick, not too thin with a lovely amount of crunch. They're seasoned nicely and the mushrooms were still soft on the inside. It reminded me of popcorn chicken. They're very tasty and satisfying. I could probably eat an entire mixing bowl full during a movie (I'd probably regret it later lol) but they're a perfect appy/snack. The vegan sesame chicken was yummy. The sauce or seasoning had kind of like a 5 spice flavour to it. Coating was nice - not too thick, not too thin. They weren't soggy and the broccoli it came with was cooked nicely...still vibrant and not over cooked. The mixed vegetable fried rice was okay. I liked that there was baby corn in it but the fried rice itself was too dark (possibly from soy sauce), lacking flavor, and missing that smokey charred wok flavor that every good fried rice has. The restaurant was clean. I liked that they offered Chinese tea in the traditional cups and had the typical chilli sauce, chilli oil, salt & white pepper on all the tables like most Chinese restaurants do. The service was great too and the girl serving us was really nice, friendly and sweet. I appreciated that she came to quality check and asked us if everything was okay. Excellent quality and made to order. Beats going to SF for similar Chinese vegan restaurants. Love the sweet and sour pork eggplant and salt and pepper tofu. There were places to sit inside. It's not fancy but clean. Service was ok but I didn't come for the service. They could make it a bit more inviting. Great food none the less. read more

My New Years resoultion this year is to do meatless Mondays. So the first meal that I had was here at Veggie Lee! Food - DELICIOUS! Everything was so flavorful. They have a lunch special and their soup of the day was hot and sour. It was spicy but extremely savory. I ordered the eggplant in Sichuan sauce and it was amazing. My boyfriend ordered the chicken cashew and that was delicious as well. I have no complaints about the food. The price for the meal was definitely worth it also. Service - We were quickly seated and the food came out less than 10 minutes after we ordered. We were the only customers there since we got there a few minutes after they opened. Veggie Lee is definitely a hidden gem in Hayward. It's not just good Chinese food, it's good Vegan Chinese food. Personally I do not follow a strict vegan diet but Veggie Lee just became my favorite Chinese restaurant in Hayward. Honestly, I think I'm starting to enjoy vegan Chinese food over regular Chinese food. Who knew Vegan food can be this delicious? Plus they use less oil than the usual Chinese restaurants. I've been here 3 times so far and have never been disappointed on each visit. On top of that I've never gone in to a food coma either. Trust me, I can eat. The staff here are always friendly and the service is quick. Sometimes the service is a little too quick. The orders come out the kitchen within minutes. Last time we came the salt & pepper chicken came out the kitchen in probably 3-4 minutes after we ordered. By the way I do recommend the salt & pepper chicken. The sesame chicken, potstickers, fried rice, and rice noodles are delicious as well. The menu is huge and I haven't been able to explore the seafood and soup selection yet. I'm sure it is just as good as the other entrees I just listed above. The takeout service is speedy too. It usually only takes around 10 minutes for them to complete the order. The price is pretty reasonable. Most entrees ranges from $10-$15 per order. It might be slightly higher than some other Chinese restaurants in the area but not high enough to cause any irritation. Parking is easy as well. They share a lot with Quickly but the lot is never full. read more

I'm a meat lover so when good friends say there's a great cantonese vegetarian place you need to try...I was skeptical. Dishes we tried (shown below) were delicious. I am a fan!!! If all vegetarian dishes taste so good I can eat this every day!!! For this review, I am only including my favorite dishes collected over a few visits so I can remember what to order next time. I have not had a bad dish but not all are memorable. I also love the name of the place in Chinese: 心中有素 English name is the chef's name. Ever since making the decision to go on a plant-based diet, I had to find alternatives to some of my favorite meals. I had to do some searching on my Yelp app for vegan/vegetarian options around my area. Veggie Lee came up as my closest option. After completing a gym session, I headed to Veggie Lee for a post workout meal. Upon my arrival, it was semi busy, but I was able to get a table fairly quickly. Veggie Lee limits their use of oils and no garlic is used in their dishes. I wondered about the no garlic, but do to some religious beliefs, it's considered as an aphrodisiac. The menu looked very extensive and I wanted to try everything on the menu. But, that wasn't happening due to the limitations of my stomach and wallet! For the mean time, I went for the following items for my first time visit: - Vegetable Chow Mien - Sweet & sour chicken - Salt & pepper pumpkin The sweet & sour chicken came out first. I was really impressed with how this dish came out. I couldn't really tell the difference between the traditional sweet & sour chicken vs the vegan sweet & sour chicken. Next was the vegetable chow mien. This was tasty and helped with my noods cravings. Lastly, the salt & pepper pumpkin came. The dish was very very delicious. The simplest way to explain the taste of this dish is that it reminds me of tempura sweet potatoes. If you're into tempura vegetables, I would recommend this! Pretty tasty vegan foods here. We came here on a weekday evening and there was only 1 or 2 other groups the entire time we were there so seating was not a problem. It's a little unassuming restaurant off Hesperian. I've always driven past it but never had the chance to try it. This restaurant doesn't serve onions/garlic. We ordered the salt and pepper chicken and the vegan thai fish. The salt and pepper chicken came out within a few minutes (pretty quick). The coating tastes like popcorn chicken, not too salty. But the inside tastes a bit rubbery, not sure what we were eating. Still tasty overall. The vegan Thai fish came out shortly after. It looked like fried fish but the texture was a bit spongy; again we weren't sure we were eating, lol. The middle sauce tasted like sweet chili sauce with bell peppers. It didn't taste like fish; just looked like it. We also had 2 bowls of white rice. The total cost was around $45... which included 2 entrees, 2 rice bowls and Thai tea. This was my first time dining at this location. The atmosphere is cozy and the service was prompt and attentive. We were seated in the far corner set back from the door which was nice because it was a cold drizzly day. We ordered the veggie chow mein, veggie deluxe and the braised tofu. The meal started with hot tea and hot and spicy soup. The soup had perfect heat, was not overly salty but tasted like there was something missing. Hubby and I broke down the ingredients of what would normally be in this soup and figured out rice wine vinegar could have been added to balance the body of the soup. The braised tofu with vegetables came out and honestly that was the best part of the meal. The tofu was juicy and flavorful. The veggies were fresh but honestly the cornstarch sauce was too much. It didn't have a lot of flavor and a little less sauce would have made it more enjoyable. The veggie deluxe is not to be confused with the assorted vegetables. Our server explained the deluxe are Asian style veggies and the assorted veggies would be more "American". I'm assuming it would be carrots, celery and onions versus bok choy and the 4-5 different mushrooms that came with the deluxe. Veggie deluxe was good, didn't care much for the texture of the snow mushroom so I pushed it to the side. Again, the veggies were cooked perfectly but there was too much of the cornstarch sauce. This is our favorite Chinese takeout joint! We do the 40 minute drive because their food is just that delicious! We generally get 2 salt and pepper vegan chicken and 2 Kung Pao vegan chicken. The salt and pepper is very much like fried popcorn chicken. the Kung Pao has an amazing spicy sauce and lots of delicious veggies and peanuts. Both entrees taste very much like chicken, it's hard to believe they're vegan! For takeout they also give you a free veggie fried rice, so you get 5 entrees for around $80. Portions are very generous. Their new location is in a strip mall so there's lots of parking. It's very easy to order online through their website and pick up. I highly recommend using the restaurant's own website to order instead of a 3rd party website, they often have coupons and specials. read more

Well I been gaining weight and wanted to be Vegan I wanted to eat veggies and drop the meat. I did my research online trying to find a Vegan Restaurant and in my luck I found Veggie Lee. This place is so close in my area so decided to order online. I had about 5 dishes in my mind. I was expecting it to be cheap after all vegetables are cheap. But to my Surprise the minimum price of their dishes Is About $13.00 up to $15.00 a bit pricey. Well the food is ok but it's not that delicious either. One of the best Vegetarian restaurants I've been to. Contrary to what you would've expect, this restaurant is very clean and neat. The food quality here is amazing. Their Broccoli Beef was very close to the real deal. Chicken and Bitter Melon with black bean sauce was equally as good. Restaurant was packed (with a lot of to go orders) but still the food came out at a steady pace and piping hot. Delicious vegetarian and vegan Chinese dishes...tastier than many regular Chinese restaurants in the area. Two weeks ago was the first time I had returned since they moved to Hesperian and "A" Streets. It is smaller than before but still tasty! As many of my friends are vegetarian, it is the place to go for vegetarian/ vegan food in the Hayward/San Leandro area. I've been here a few times. Friendly staff and an unhappy looking head owner/chef. I tried asking him questions about his dishes prior to ordering and he was rude -- perhaps another bad day. Always looking upset. Perhaps because the place is empty most of the time. The food is mediocre. Don't even try any beef dishes. What ever they use for imitation meat, does not at all taste nor have the texture of beef. I had Mongolian beef, and it didn't even have the flavor of Mongolian beef. It was actually pretty bad. We had the pork buns for to go, we steamed them at home and they were okay. Just lack fillings. The lady only likes their chowmein. Over all, we have been here twice, I must say great service. That's why they get three stars. As far as the food, it's just ehhhhh. Unhealthy vegan dishes as well. Meaning it doesn't taste clean. I was looking for freshness. They thicken up their sauces in the dishes and the flavors are just not there so far. They have a lot of dishes on the menu. That alone is questionable. This review currently is for the ONE item I ordered for takeout. My grandmother is vegetarian now and very very picky of the vegetarian food. My aunt in law had recommended this place so I thought I would give it a shot for grandma. We picked the vegetarian curry over panfriend noodles. The noodles looked very crispy when they came out. The curry however, did not have a lot of variety. Grandma complained that it was mainly just bell peppers and typically vegetarian dishes include variety of veggies. Maybe all the other veggies weren't fresh so they were stuck with bell peppers? I did notice that recently they've been making the salt and pepper chicken different, hopefully they stick to the original recipe though. Came here on a weekday lunch to get one of their lunch specials for 11 bucks. Their dishes are quite expensive but the quality of the food is quite good. Only three customers during the lunch period dined in as there quite a few phone orders. Staff fully masked and quite courteous. We ordered a Sichuan pork lunch special. The vegan pork they use is wheat gluten and I'm not very fond of it's taste but the sauce used to sauteed the vegan pork was finger licking good and great soaked into the rice. Keep in mind that this is a Buddhist vegan restaurant meaning they don't use garlic or chives and various heavily flavored veggies in observance of Buddhist customs. our favorite was the vegetable soup with fried rice crisps. The crunchy rice soaked up the delicious broth although I might add you may want to add some white pepper to the broth to enjoy it even more. I thought they closed down as they use to be across the street from chabot college, but they moved location and are now located in the same plaza as target on Hesperian and A street. I'm so glad they are still around as I love their food and it's vegan. Ordered the veggie Lee fried rice, sesame chicken, and beef chow fun for take out. All three dishes were great. I will say this, the food is filling and it took me a couple of days to finish, even after reheating it, it was still delicious. So happy that they are still in business. My family has been on this no meat Mondays kick for a few weeks now and wanted to give Veggie Lee a try. I've heard others say it was good for a place that didn't sell meat. We were surprised at how good it was. We ordered the wonton soup, orange (vegan) chicken, salt and pepper mushroom, chow mein and fried rice -- plus they gave a choice of another free order of chow mein or fried rice for spending more than $65. We got the extra fried rice since we love rice. The fried rice is filled with so much veggies like bok Choy, and the little baby corns (I looooove them, my husband not so much). Salt and pepper mushroom was crispy and you don't even realize it is mushroom. The orange (Vegan) chicken comes with broccoli. My husband is a fan of the orange chicken from Panda and he was happy with this dish. It is a bit pricey but the taste was good. Everything had their own flavor.
