Just tried the wonton soup and the orange chicken. The soup broth was great but the veggie wonton filling was mushy in a way that was palatable but I wouldn't order it again. The orange chicken was great with a ring of broccoli, similar to the sesame chicken, but with orange sauce and orange rind garnish (yummy texture). Still 5 stars in my book. read more

I've only tried three dishes from Veggie Lee over the past 3 years. That would be the broccoli beef, kung pao chicken, and yellow curry chicken. I only order the kung pao chicken and the other 2 dishes lack flavor. I really like the Kung Pao chicken, but during my last few visits, the dish hasn't been consistent. I'm either missing a type of vegetable, the vegetables aren't the freshest, or there's less sauce. Employees are always nice. Veggie Lee has been a new go to place for my friend and I. We started to come here at least once or twice a month now. a lot of the dishes we tried has been great and some we caught ourselves order again. our go to so far have been: mixed veggie fried rice mixed mushroom with mixed nuts. Salt & Pepper pumpkin. we have tried other dishes and I think our next go to would be sweet and sour chicken. Their "chicken" is good. The texture and flavor tastes just like chicken. Their "beef" was ok. you can tell its made out of tofu skin. flavor is ok, but not the best. I haven't gotten try their "seafood" dishes yet. will be our next order and will update this review based on that. Service: they are fast and attentive. They have been super busy lately so be prepared to wait for their service. P.S. try their home made XO chili sauce that they sell at the counter. Once I ordered it was not a long wait for 5 items plus a free entree. Hubby enjoyed his birthday meal and wished this place was closer so we can try other menu items sooner. The Chinese vegan dishes are overall pretty good. The fried vegan chicken dishes are the most impressive due to the texture most closely mimicking that of real chicken! We tried some of the vegan beef and non-fried vegan chicken which were alright, but not good enough to make us want to ever order those dishes again. The meals we have been impressed to order multiple times are: General Tso's, Orange Chicken, and Sesame Chicken. The ambiance at lunch can sometimes be lacking. On one occasion two of the cooks were sleeping in the dining room on the chairs which was a little odd to witness to say the least. Not to mention they were watching tv on their phones in front of diners. Maybe save that for the break room? Food portions were large and the food was flavorful. I'am a long time vegan and rarely get excited about mock meat as I prefer tofu and vegetables. No msg, no garlic, no onion, and very little oil for some dishes prepped. We ordered the potstickers, vegan orange chicken, salt and pepper pumpkin, vegetable chow mein, and side of white rice. Still had tons of food leftover for family of 4. 5/5 Vegan orange chicken was lit! Flavorful and hints of actual orange peel. Vegan meat gave it a more tender consistency compare to actual chicken meat. Lightly tossed in sauce so its not drenched and overpowering. White rice wasnt dry like most other chinese restaurants. 3/5 Potstickers were huge and not oily at all. The ones we received were a little on the overcooked side and more chewy. Reminded me of a dumpling instead. Therefore one star knocked off. 5/5 Chow mein was off the hook! Every time I eat noodles from somewhere I get sick after. These had barely any oil and no msg so it sat very well. Noodle to veggie ratio was even too! Even my kids loved the noodles. Defin will order again! 4/5 Salt & Pepper Pumpkin was my favorite dish. Lightly fried in tempura. The pumpkin was cooked well and kept formation. I could it it by itself since its starchy you defin want to share this dish. I really like this smallish cruelty free Buddhist vegetarian/vegan establishment. I started eating here when they opened, seems like it's been about 20 years ago... I use to work nearby. At the time I didn't know anything about the 5 pungent spices and the reason no onions or garlic are served here, either cooked or raw. It says on the menu "no onions or garlic" and nothing else... If you ask they just casually say "It's Buddhist" Thanks to Google I am now a little more enlightened... It is said in Buddhism and Hinduism and some Chinese sects avoid onions garlic leeks and spring onions due to angering Gods and passions. "They" say odors repel Gods and attract hungry ghosts and demons. "They" say lay people don't eat them because the gas interferes with meditation... So there you go now we all know. ...A very edited version of what it said! Back to the food; Fabulous! I have eaten my way through most of the menu. Although I'm not much into faux meats. As other YELPERS have said the Salt & Pepper Pumpkin is great I love the Eggplant Szechuan but it comes alone you have to order rice separately, but the tea is still free! Love the Tempura Vegetables. I love the Veggie dishes and I love Tofu so those are some of my favorites. Actually I love all the food. I normally do take out. Have eaten in a few times over the years, they have a good following and plenty of room for bigger parties which I recommend due to the high prices sharing is the way to go! I tried this restaurant twice because I was looking for vegetarian and vegan food. Both times I was disappointed. The service was quick and people, friendly, but the food was underwhelming. The first time I just did not feel good after eating that meal and so I thought I would give it another try . This second time, I got a very clear experience of boring and bland. There was no garlic for one thing. No seasoning. I don't like having to give a review like this, especially when the restaurant provides vegetarian and vegan dishes. Vegans, vegetarians, or just people who want a tasty meal with no meat...Veggie Lee is the place to be! I came with Ellen T. and Lonnie so we could share multiple dishes (yay family style). We were promptly seated and handed menus and brought hot tea. Ellen and I had already perused the menu online so we knew we wanted the salt and pepper pumpkin, pan fried noodles with curry and tofu and the pan fried bean curd roll. We decided to also add the orange chicken and the pea leaves with bamboo fungus. We knew that none of the dishes would contain garlic or onion to meet the needs of the buddhists. The orange chicken with broccoli came out first. You could tell the chicken wasn't chicken but when you ate it, you'd think it was pretty close. Not chicken but actually bean curd! What?! The broccoli was fresh (I love broccoli) and the dish was well seasoned. The "chicken" as lightly fried and not overly sauced. The pea leaves with bamboo fungus came out next. This dish also included few gogi berries tossed in. The dish was okay; the garlic would've made it more of standard Chinese vegetable dish but we still enjoyed it as one of our only non-fried items. The pan fried noodles with curry and tofu came out next. Both Lonnie and I had wanted to try this one. The curry was a tad less potent than I would've wanted but it was still excellent. The noodles were crispy and there was a generous amount of long rectangular tofu placed on top. Next came the pan fried bean curd roll. This basically sliced mushrooms wrapped with bean curd and then slightly fried. It came with sweet and sour sauce which surprisingly worked well. Finally the salt and pepper pumpkin came out and it was delicious. This was definitely my pick of the night. The pumpkin had a light tempera type coating and was covered with a salt and pepper mixture that really added to the dish. The pumpkin was soft inside the slightly crunchy exterior. This would be my go to and my number one suggestion for all you Yelpers who like squash/pumpkin! What I liked best was that none of the dishes were deep fried. So even though they indicate they are fried, it's lightly fried so there's no puddle of oil underneath. This was probably the first restaurant I'd ever eaten at with Lonnie (he's a vegetarian) where he ate and enjoyed every single dish! So whether you are a carnivore like Ellen and I or a vegetarian like Lonnie, there is something for everyone! It is a little pricey but the food makes it worth it! read more

I tried this place just in time for the Lenten season (no meat on Fridays). We ordered the spicy eggplant and tofu, salt and pepper pumpkin, and "beef" chow fun. This was for pickup. Placed the order through Yelp and it was done in about 30 min. Everything was so good. Yes, even for vegan food. The pumpkin tasted exactly how you would imagine, if you're familiar with the "salt and pepper" style of Chinese cooking. The "beef" in the chow fun was acceptable and surprisingly deceiving. The tofu eggplant was also flavorful and all 3 orders were enough for 2 people plus more for another meal. 10/10 for vegan food! read more

My husband and I have been embracing a plant-based diet, and Veggie Lee's is a true gem in the East Bay. If you are vegan, don't like onions/garlic, or are vegetarian, and craving Chinese food, please please PLEASE give Veggie Lee's a try! It's located right off Hesperian and has its own shared parking lot next to a Teaspoon (!!). We order takeout and dine-in. When you order over a certain amount for takeout, you can get a free chow mein or veggie beef! Whenever we order from Veggie Lee's, we order 5 dishes (totaling around $80-100). We enjoy the SP7, E35, E58, R12, and R23. The ying yang fried rice is awesome as well, and SP1 was our standard appetizer. We always have leftovers to enjoy the next day too. The food here tastes fresh, clean, and NOT oily at all. The staff is friendly, and I've noticed that there are a lot of regulars who come here. This is one of the local businesses that I've chosen to support during the pandemic. This is truly in the top 3 restaurants in the East Bay for me. read more

Quick, delicious and nutritious! They substituted my food allergy of tofu with broccoli with the snow pea and water chestnuts. I asked for brown rice and got white but I don't mind because I enjoyed all of the food anyway! I also had the soup with shiitake and white fungus. I love how there isn't garlic in any of the food due my allergic reaction. They also don't use any onion as well which is fine by me since with onion when it is a leftover at home, absorbs the yuckies in the air or fridge. Wow, the food here is top notch! This is probably the best vegetarian Asian restaurant I have ever been to. I ordered the sesame "chicken" and my husband ordered the mixed vegetables with tofu. Both were excellent with really good flavor and quality. The only downside is the price, it wasn't cheap at all and the portion sizes were a little too large for one person to eat. Very hit and miss food. The beef black pepper chow fun has no wok hey and is just cooked rice noodles stirred in unevenly with a black pepper sauce. The other noodle dishes I ordered before had a similar quality. The fried wonton is just fried wonton skin with no filling, which is not too bad but considering its the same price point as the potstickers and spring rolls, but has no filling, its a really bad deal. Veggie Lee is definitely something you'd drive past and not take a second look at, but I reckon that this is a place you should be trying whether or not you're vegetarian/vegan. My friend and I got the Orange "Chicken" and Mongolian "Beef" both of which were so yummy! I got the Mongolian "Beef" but honestly, my friend's Orange "Chicken" was actually so much more flavorful and I recommend that one over my dish. We decided to sit outside and it was a beautiful day. Our server was so attentive and kind and truly rounded out our experience.
