But then ... a tech guy from New Haven, Connecticut came in and bought the old restaurant from the original owner and ... wow! What a difference! The pizzas are totally different now and so much better! Think "Mystic Pizza" more than "CPK" and you will see what I mean (check out my pictures for the details)! My surprise has turned into sheer delight! The pizza dough is now a 48-hour sourdough and it is incredibly tasty!!! They have about a dozen different kinds of toppings on the slices and so many of them are terrific! I do not eat meat on my pizza, but my friend just raved about how good was the sausage pizza! Personally, I was torn between the Plain Mootz (yummy tomato and cheese with a great flop; delicious sauce; tangy tomatoes; pure delight!) and the BBQ Chicken with savory sauce and tasty chunks of chicken! Two winners for sure! For those of you who want to eat more healthy, the new owner has kept the Salad Pizza -- and has improved upon the avocado by whipping it with lemon juice so it stays bright green and does not get oxidized and turn brown from the air. The best news of all is that the new owner, JD, is renovating and updating the shop, putting in new, more comfortable seating, and has hugely upgraded the beverage selection! LilGuy will be the new name soon, and this is sure to become a hot spot on Abbot Kinney Blvd., even without "Abbott's" in the name! Jay actually lives in the neighborhood, genuinely cares about Abbot's and couldn't have been nicer. He has plans for the upcoming redesign and--WOW. This little Venice pizza shop is about to get a seriously beautiful makeover while still keeping the personality that made people love it in the first place. And let's talk ingredients. They're using quality products including Grande Cheese and Ezzo meats, and you can taste it. The BBQ Chicken Pizza remains one of my favorites anywhere--whole-milk mozzarella, BBQ chicken, smoky Gouda, red and green onions and just the right amount of BBQ sauce on that fantastic everything-bagel crust. And where else are you getting a Salad Pizza like this? Mozzarella and ricotta are baked on the everything-bagel crust, then topped with greens, tomatoes, onion, feta, lemon vinaigrette, Parmesan and whipped avocado. It sounds crazy. It works. However, I left disappointed with my visit, especially after trying several other pizza restaurants on this list that absolutely lived up to the hype. Sei is in the Pico-Robertson neighborhood, unassumingly sitting on the corner of the block. The restaurant is very small. It features a bar that surrounds the kitchen area, along with a few tables. They accept reservations and walk-ins, and they also seem to do a lot of takeout orders. Not being able to make a reservation for three, we decided to get there early on a weekday to grab a seat. We waited about ten minutes for three seats at the bar. The menu has plenty of options, featuring both classics and more unique pizzas. We ordered one pizza per person with the intention of sharing all three, and went for a mix of classic and fusion, opting for the Margherita, Ruti's Pizza, and Mala Lamb Sausage. It took about 20 to 25 minutes for the pizza to arrive at our table. Visually, the pizzas all looked amazing. The crust was really puffy with plenty of color contrast on the plate. Upon picking up my first slice, I immediately noted the floppiness of the pizza. The center of the pizza collapsed, causing some ingredients to fall off. This carried into my thoughts on the texture of the crust. In the Margherita especially, the bites towards the middle of the pizza were really soggy. The texture was borderline unpleasant. Maybe it had to do with the amount of sauce they used, but I found that the Margherita was the only pizza we ordered that was really problematic in this aspect. And while the Ruti's and Mala Lamb pizzas were still floppy in the middle, they weren't as soggy. Despite this, it was clear to me that Pizzeria Sei cared a lot about their ingredients. The natural flavors of each component in every pizza shone beautifully. The tomato sauce had a really nice, sweet, and tangy flavor, and all the herbs were aromatic and flavorful. I found the Mala Lamb Sausage pizza to be the best. The flavor profile was well-balanced and unique in addition to the crust being the best. As I ate closer to the edge of the pizza towards the crust, the texture improved drastically. The crust itself had a light crunch but was overall very chewy, and it was finished with high-quality olive oil. Combined, these drastically improved the pizza. Was Sei the second-best pizza in the US? For me, it definitely wasn't. However, they offer a unique crust style hard to find elsewhere in the US, along with creative dishes that make Pizzeria Sei worth a visit. If I were to go again, I wouldn't order all of the pizzas at the same time. From the second the pizzas hit our table, they grew soggier, and as they cooled, all of the pizzas were mediocre. I understand that this style of pizza is required to be eaten immediately, but it is also something to note and plan for.

Follow map directions - you'll second guess yourself at first if you park on the main street because Market Pizza and Jackson Market are part of the neighborhood itself and are not surrounded by your typical commercial businesses. It's a soothing environment for brunch with draping vegetation and cute furniture. Beware of flies during daytime. The store itself only had two people working (one person mostly taking orders and one person mostly cooking) so it took a while to make the pizza because the wood fired oven isn't necessarily humongous and there were several people who had ordered before us. No buzzer so if you decide to wander around or if your table is out of earshot, you'll have to check in as they verbally call orders. I had no idea when my order was coming up but they were friendly about me checking in whenever I walked up.

I was invited by a friend to Venice Cucina today for a late lunch. Being Italian and growing up with homemade lasagna and pastas ,I was not expecting my palate to be satisfied. In fact most Italian restaurants never measured up to the family food I grew up on. Venice Cucina changed everything for me. The food went above my expectations and the best I ever tasted, and that includes my food experiences while in Italy!!! We ordered the eggplant appetizer topped with prosciutto The sauce that covered the appetizer was so tasteful that I lapped up every bit with the bread being served. I ordered the Linguine Puttanesca., one of my favorite dishes. OMG, words cannot describe how wonderful the flavors of the anchovies, capers, artichoke and olives blended together. My friends shared their Lasagna and Vodka Penne dishes....again exquisite. Tiramisu was chosen for dessert, made to perfection! Could not resist finishing it even though my belly was full. I highly recommend if you want the best Italian food in LA you need to eat at Venice Cucina. Once you dine there you will not go anywhere else for Italian cuisine. This evening my man and I shared an order of Pennette alla vodka w/ Italian sausage, spaghetti w/ house Bolognese meat sauce & basil, Caesar salad and topped it all off with garlic toast. PHENOMENAL!! The garlic spread for the toast has made w/ hand cut garlic in olive oil instead of butter. The creamy vodka sauce tastes original. The entire dinner was prepared by the owner. Wait time & costs are worth it for these exquisite flavors. The options are many, the outside seating is shielding but still offers Venice Beach atmospheric views. Went here for dinner. Food was NOT good. Noticed they use a MICROWAVE in the kitchen from where I was sitting. I had spaghetti w/ meatballs. The meatballs were obviously pre-made/ frozen. Yuck yuck yuck!! The sauce wasn't great either. Tasted like Chef Boyardee! I had to add all the condiments on the table to my dish to make it palatable. My boyfriend, who loves pizza, ordered one and couldn't finish his due to lack of flavor. While we were there, the owner had the sentimental muzak at high volume along with the television. My sisters and I had an above-and-beyond dining experience at Venice Cucina. Alex, the server, was exceptionally warm, personable, funny, and accommodating. The food was incredible - we devoured a caesar salad, gorgonzola pizza, and spinach ravioli, plus the fresh, hot bread and olive oil they provided. The heat lamps were very effective and the outdoor ambiance was lovely. I'm visiting from out of town, but would come here all the time if I could!! My girlfriend and I had always passed by the area and have been around the neighborhood, but had never been able to eat here. We got there a bit earlier than our reservation, about 10 minutes earlier than expected. The restaurant was extremely busy at 7:10 PM, with multiple family dinners and a huge birthday party happening all at once. After about 3-4 minutes of standing in front of the door, our waiter asked if we had made a reservation and immediately sat us down at a table right in front of the kitchen. The DineLA menu wasn't extensive but because of that, we were able to try both appetizers and both desserts. As for the entrees, we decided to get the Tagliolini and the Tagliata di Manzo alla Pizzaiola. The appetizers were both really food, especially the sauce that the Posillipo came with. It was so good that after we finished it, we got the bread and dipped it in the sauce! The entrees were okay; I think the Tagliolini could have used a bit more salt or some cheese, like Pecorino or Parmigiano but the scallops that came with the dish was impeccably seasoned. The Tagliata was also good, especially the sauce that came on top, but I just wished I had more of it. Even though it was supposed to be a filet, I couldn't tell if it was that or a skirt steak. Lastly, I was a bit happy when our waiter came to our table before our dessert and told us that they had ran out of the chocolate cake and that we had the option to choose from their regular menu (whatever they had that was available at the moment). When the waiter mentioned a hazelnut cake, we decided to get that. Again, so happy that there was no more chocolate vanilla cake because the hazelnut lemon cream cake was absolutely divine! I loved the lemon cheesecake-like filling and the hazelnut crumble on the bottom that was so light and compact that it felt like a hazelnut rice crispy treat. At the end of our meal, I attempted to get parking validation, as I was told that parking was free if our meal was under 2 hours. When I tried to get the validation, the machine wouldn't validate and was telling me to pay the entirety of parking. Glad to say that one of the staff members (I'm not sure if he was the owner or the manager or someone high up in the restaurant) saw that I was struggling and had told me that he would help me get the parking issue situated, and he actually followed through and did! There was also another server who offered to take our photos and had posed us inside the restaurant to take the shots. He did a really great job and both my girlfriend and I were so happy with how the photos came out. This place had gone above and beyond our expectation and I think its safe to say that we will definitely be back to try their regular menu!

The Argentina red shrimp was ROUGH. If you can't source good ingredients, do not put it on your menu. The high light was the grilled lemon. Had the bolognese pasta and the pasta was ROUGH. The meat sauce was moderate and flavorless. Had to use the nicely grilled lemon for the pasta. I was so hungry so I had to eat with no choice. I ended up dining at another restaurant after.

One of the group who's not GF tried the GF pizza, and reported that it was very good. This place does a terrific job with their crusts (thin shell with slightly charred, puffy edges) and offers imaginative, high quality toppings along with some more traditional ones. I'm hoping we'll be able to return again soon. Tip: The house red wine is quite respectable.
