The family had a lovely week here at Ventus. TL:DR, the food was excellent, the alcohol free flowing, and the resort itself is well kept up, but there isn't much snorkeling here at the resort itself.
There are at least 2 levels of guests here, and we booked a Platinum package. That gets you access to a couple of 'lounges' on site with upgraded booze, nicer room amenities (like turn down services) and a few other perks. You can also reserve the beach palapas and beach beds a day in advance, so if you want to lay out on the beach (with shade) and make sure you have a spot, this a key. If you are trying to save money and don't need the special services (the girls used room service, I'm not sure if that requires Platinum or not) you can save a little money and skip this perk level.
The higher grade booze was kind of hit and miss for me. The nicest tequila I saw in the Platinum clubs was Don Julio, while the highest level in the bars was Cuervo Tradicional, though not every bar had it. Some bars had Mezcal, which was in the Platinum club as well, and some did not. Since I drank mainly tequila, that is what I noticed the most, but if like blended Scotch, the Platinum club definitely had better stuff. Also, the Platinum club lounges had Nespresso machines to make good coffee and computers.
There are several restaurants on site. For breakfast, the buffet is pretty standard. Eggs, omelets, steam table breakfast varieties (pancakes one day, French toast the next...) with fruits, juices, pastries and other stuff. Since I was on vacation, I would frequently get a shot of tequila with breakfast and mix it in with one of the juices (watermelon and honeydew) and good choices.
For lunch, we ate at the Mercado and the Mexican buffet by the main pool of the Marina resort (adjacent). You can go anywhere and just get what you want. The Mercado opens around noon and stays open until late, with stations for Americanized Chinese food, crepes (savory and sweet), salads and sandwiches, ceviche and seafood, pasta and pizza, and Mexican food and grilled items. Generally, I stuck with flank or steak grilled up, with onions and guacamole (which was very good) and a couple of tortillas for lunch. For dinner at the Mercado, I would also have some ceviche (which was good) and maybe a little Italian food. Probably the single best thing I ate was a sea bass off the steam table in the seafood station, but it only showed up once during the week.
For the actual restaurants at dinner, I ate at the French, Italian, Mexican and Caribbean restaurants. The French place had good French onion soup and fair salads. I wanted to like the lamb chops more than I actually did (they were not very tender), but the duck confit was actually excellent. I thought the Italian place was not very good. I was very surprised by how much I like the Mexican restaurant for dinner. I was expecting average fair, enchilada, tacos... and instead had far more inventive and interesting food (smoked marlin tacos) and they did a tableside Mexican coffee and bananas flambe (I passed, but i would try it if I was going back). Similarly, the Caribbean restaurant (alternated menus with the seafood restaurant, located in the lobby of the Marina hotel) surprised me. They have a nice looking salad/appetizer bar, which I did not avail myself of because I was no where near hungry enough, but the duck breast that I had for the entree was probably the second best main course I had all week.
There are multiple pools throughout the area. If you have active kids, or like the hubub yourself, the pool at the Marina hotel was a water slide, jump area, music, activities, a swim up bar... The main pool at the Ventus is more sedate but also much bigger. If you want to actually swim (in the morning, before it gets crowded), I would do it here. There is an adult only pool with a temperate and a hot jacuzzi, so you can get away from the kids. They have kayaks, SUPs and 2 Hobbie Cats, but staff goes out with you on the cats and you only get about 20 minutes. Still, it is fun to be on the water. They were supposed to have windsurfers, but I think they were being repaired/replaced while we were there.
