This is the second delivery I've received from this place. I'm shocked at the quality of the food . the its probably the worst place I've dealt with isince I moved here three years ago. They have the nerve to say they have spicy dumplings--all it is - is steam dumplings and a squirt Sriracha on it ----and charge you more. I mean literally that is exactly what they've done. I ordered the house special vermicelli noodles , zero !! I mean zero !! flavor. It's just various pieces of seafood tossed in with noodles --there's no sauce , there is zerois zero flavor. Ordered the spicy shrimp --commented no onions --it is overloaded with onions --it wasn't properly sealed --spilled into the bag. The garlic chicken? If your going to put in. The description , garlic on entrée --it needs to taste like what it says. I really struggled to find a garlic flavor in this. Salt & pepper pork chops ---greasy !! if you like greasy pork chops - then you score here. I'm just really really disappointed. I don't like to leave a negative review on a restaurant, but I'm telling you I don't think I'll ever be back at this establishment because this is strike two . My family and I love to eat here because the food is delicious and the service is great. Our favorite items are the sesame beef, broccoli beef, honey walnut shrimp, and yang chow fried rice. Placed an order for pickup on a Sunday around 5p and the woman said it would be ready in 15 mins, came in 20 mins later and waited an additional 10 mins. So I'm just going to dive right in. The service is always good. They're very nice, I've called for take out twice and never had any issue. Now to the food.. the first time I came to Venus I ordered a wonton soup. The juice of the soup is so delicious. No complaints there. However - the first time I got this soup- there was a shell in the soup. Looked like a clam or mussel shell. I called Venus they said they don't serve those foods and they don't know how a shell got in there. Fast forward to today- I ordered another wonton soup. Today I found bugs in the soup. Im not sure if it's the veggies or the container itself but literal bugs in the soup. I really wanted to like this place but even today the wontons look very cold. They're cooked and the color is white on one part, looks yellow in another part. I'm not sure why it looks like this. Spent $12 on a soup that I didn't not finish eating due to this bug incident and will not be returning. I will reach out for a refund hopefully they will honor it. read more

This place came recommended but it was NO BUENO Flavorless! Sweet and sour chicken tasted like nothing NO sweet NO sour just globby sauce with no umph no zest no zing. No care and only cabbage in the chicken fried rice just white rice with oil and cabbage and very little egg BLAH no loving care or attention to the many steps it takes to make quality fried rice. White areas on crab won ton's obviously not cooked correctly or with any type of care. The inside looks hoardery and a bit grungy so that is off putting even when ur just picking up food. Nothing tasted like it should all the food tasted like the same greasy mess missing oyster sauce, fish sauce, nothing aromatic and definitely not worth the $50 lunch cost!!! Wish I could give them the uneaten food back and get a full refund. Lesson learned WONT GO BACK - terrible Better off going to Panda Express at least the sauces taste right and the flavors are there even though it's not the best it's way better than this place. Venus is the only Hong Kong style restaurant in this area for miles. It's good but unfortunately some dishes will be hit or miss . I expect it since certain dishes are hard to keep original with when it is not a everyday normal sell like in more Asian cities. read more

Legit Chinese restaurant in Covina? I would've never known such a thing existed if it wasn't for my wife's coworker. My wife and I wanted to check out this place after hearing about their buy 1 get 1 free deal on lobster. I think it's about $23 per pound but it comes out to more like $12 per pound because of this offer. We got 3 lbs. of lobster for about $37 after tax. Not bad. Something like this would cost about $80 at places like Newport Tan Cang. I can't say it's comparable but it is quite good. Actually, if this place made it spicier, I may actually prefer this place over Newport, especially at this price and no annoying wait. I think it's stir fried and has some spices but is not spicy. Kind of weird because it has a nice smoky, habanero like smell and flavor but no heat. The lobster isn't on the menu but there are posters plastered all over the restaurant with this deal. My wife and I also tried Shrimp with Spicy Garlic Sauce, Fish Filet with Black Bean Sauce, Deep Fried Fish Filet with Sweet & Sour Sauce, and Beef Steak French Style. Most of the dishes were pretty good although they were all a bit too sweet. Even the ones that are suppose to be spicy were more sweet than spicy. I will have to ask them next time if they can adjust the heat level to more spicy. My favorite out of these was the Fish Filet with Black Bean Sauce. It was probably the least sweet one out of the four, and the fish was very soft and flaky with no fishy taste. Beef Steak French Style is somewhat similar to beef luc loc dish you find at Vietnamese restaurants, although this had a rather starchy sauce and sweeter taste. They have some good deals on lunch special, ranging in price between $5.50 and $6.95. Some items on lunch special look better than the regular dinner items. It's a bummer lunch specials are only available on weekdays between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. I'm only in this area on weekends so I won't be able to try certain dishes like Eggplant with Spicy Garlic Sauce. Lunch specials come with choice of fried rice or steamed rice. On their takeout menu there's a coupon for free eggrolls with $25 or more purchase, and $5 off with $35 or more purchase. I took advantage of the free eggrolls on my second visit, and they were pretty good. I thought it was going to be just one or two eggrolls but they gave me four pieces. The decor looks rather odd. It's an old building and everything looks rather outdated. The thing that threw me off the most was the big painting of a purple planet in the middle of the restaurant. What the heck is that all about? Anyway, it's still a good Chinese restaurant, and is probably the best one in this area. read more

I just re-read my first review of this place, and seeing that we go here regularly now, it was time to update it! We really love Venus Cafe. The people are so friendly to us, and always seem genuinely glad to see us. We never have to wait, and the food is prepared as we wait, to order. I love the old-school way the dishes just come out as they are completed. The Chef is adorable and he'll pop his head out to say Hi and we always like to let him know we love his food. The special fried rice is just outstanding- plump juicy shrimp, bbq pork delicious(why haven't I order that a la carte?- I always forget!), and all perfectly delicious. They are always accommodating to our special requests (Can we have Chinese Broccoli instead? Yes) and are just so nice. Recent deliciousness: Egg rolls , Eggplant/Tofu Hot Pot, Beef w/ Chinese broccoli, Chicken Chow Mein, Orange Chicken, Mongolian Beef, WonTon Soup. I have been on the search for a decent Chinese restaurant around my area for AGES! Thank you Venus Cafe for making my long awaited dreams come true! Now I don't have to make the trek out to SGV or Rowland Heights for decent Chinese food! I first drove by this restaurant a couple months ago and I didn't think much of it. There's plenty of Chinese restaurants in my area but nothing is on par with what I would find in Rowland Heights or SGV in terms of quality and price. But since I was desperate to try something other than the local Mexican taco truck I yelped Chinese restaurants and found Venus Cafe which was right down the street from me! I was jumping with joy and dragged the bf with me to order out. We placed our orders from the special lunch menu and walked away with huge portions of takeout for only $13! It has now been 2 months since I discovered Venus Cafe and I have visited a total of 4 times. I have also introduced my mom to the restaurant and she has been so pleased with the food that she's bought friends and relatives to dine here as well. Everything we ordered so far has been delicious and fresh. The portion sizes are big and the prices are affordable! My favorite entrees so far are the peppered basil filet mignon, sauteed totu with veggies, ma pao tofu, seafood bamboo rice, and the fried rice topped with egg. My bro and sister in law live in Covina and anytime I visit, we have to figure out what to eat for dinner. The choices are usually take out or Mexican food, which is great but sometimes you just want some cafe food, so YAY for Venus Cafe!!! We've been a few times and its usually empty which scares me because I'm afraid it'll close! The food is pretty authentic and reasonably priced. This place is a health risk! I found a metal piece of chicken wire in my fried rice! Be careful if you eat here! If I had swallowed that chicken wire I would have been in the hospital, that isn't something you can pass through your body. It must be removed. I will be reporting this place to the health department in the morning. If I didn't feel something weird in my mouth and spit it out I would have easily swallowed this or chewed on it and cause severe damage to my mouth and teeth. Am I being dramatic? You be the judge. We received a promotional flyer for this restaurant in the mail a while back. We always prefer to support small businesses over the chain restaurants. More so now with the economy as it is. At the time, we ordered our food for pick up, and everything was ready by the time we got there. Packaged nicely, and was still hot by the time we got it all home. Fish in black bean sauce was really good, with a nice bit of heat to it. French style filet mignon was tender and flavorful. Mongolian beef was nice with loads of onion and so perfect over steamed rice. My absolute favorite dish is always the house special pans fried noodles with seafood. I had one bite of it just to see if it was still edible & unfortunately it tasted awful. Nice to see a legit Cantonese restaurant in Covina! My family loves coming here for dinner when we don't feel like heading out to San Gabriel/Monterey Park. They're popular for take-out too, so that's always an option. The prices are fair, and there's a good variety of carbs, proteins, and vegetables. Overall, the quality is solid; I can't recall a dish that we thought was mediocre or bad. You can't go wrong with any of the pan fried noodles dishes, and the fried roughy fish is always a hit. I called over the telephone for the House Special Chow Mien. I told the employee to make sure to tell the kitchen staff to put less salt and less oil. I went to pick up my order when it was time. Employees were wearing masks and gloves. I went home and opened up my order. It was extremely oily. I tried it and it was like I was eating a bucket of salt. I call back and told the employee that I spoke to earlier if he asked the kitchen staff to put less salt and oil. He said he already did. I can't imagine how the regular dish tastes like. He offered me fried rice. I told him I don't like fried rice. He rudely said he can't do anything else for me. Well, looks like I won't be coming back here anymore.
