Below average food and extremely rude staff. We went there to celebrate our wedding anniversary and were looking forward to spend some quality time and enjoy the food. The gosht gilawati was the best pick. The mustard fish was bland and lacked flavor. The laal maas burnt our guts to the death. We grew up eating spicy food but this was outright bad. Barely edible. The waitress did not seem to care when we mentioned it and just avoided our table for the rest of time. On top of that there is a gratuity of 20% added to the check by default. I am a frequent traveler and have dined at much fancier places around the world and this is something extremely deceptive. No wonder no one really knows/ cares much about this place. Contrary to some of the other reviews I had seen, I think if you're looking for a lively Indian restaurant that's perfect for kids, then look no further than Verandah! The atmosphere is lively and inviting, with plenty of space for the kids to take a break from being constrained to the table. The menu is extensive and offers plenty of child-friendly options, including butter chicken and several naan breads. This unique restaurant, located in the upscale part of Houston, is definitely not one to miss EVER. Chef Sunil and wife, Anu, always goes out of their way to make sure that you enjoy their twist on dishes. My family, friends and I love the freshness, the flavors and spices used in their various dishes. And, no matter what, hands down, we always get their veg biryani. No matter what. During this time of uncertainty of safety where to eat versus not to eat, this place is, by the way, the cleanest, well mannered and protective of going above and beyond to make sure your dining experience is perfect, especially during this time. We went to this place due to its ratings in the Houston culinary scene....not sure why it got such high ratings other than the fact that it had pretty good service and cleanliness compared to other Indian places. You pay a very high price for that service and location, not the food. Whoever is writing for the Houston culinary magazine has no clue about Indian food or even what good should taste like. Very, very mediocre tasting food, at least everything that we tried. Let get there one by one. The drink "Kheera to Jeera": First thing that came to my mind was WTF. There is no drink in India that tastes sooo bad, unless someone is taking some herbal medicinal potion. The appetizer "Gosht ki Galawat": It was overwhelming with the taste of Sattu (ground chickpeas), forget about melting in the mouth. This kabab is a specialty of Awadhi cuisine and was made for the emperors when they lost their teeth but not their yearnings for kabab. They should melt in the mouth with a silkiness of a pate. This was far from it. The mains: "Saffron rice" is hard to screw up anyway. "Doi mach" : I understand that it is hard for a non-Bengali to replicate the taste of the Bengali favorite which translates to yogurt fish, but at least it could be made tasty. Not only was it not the Doi Mach it promised to be, but pretty bad to eat. "Koh-e-Awadh" : This was probably the better of the dishes, although tasting nothing like the Awadhi cuisine. The curry is comparable to something you would get at Tarka at a third of the price. The goat was pretty tender, I must admit. The dessert: After the disappointment with the rest of the food, we decided to save for a better Indian restaurant. read more

Mediocre at best. We (2 couples) dined there last night with high expectations. To begin with service was erratic. It was difficult to differentiate between the hostess, bus staff and wait staff. We began with cocktails, which were pretty good, but they took over 15 minutes to arrive. The restaurant was sparsely populated at that time (7:00 ish) so it's not like they were over loaded. We ordered appetizers based on recommendations from the staff (a lamb dish and fried cauliflower) and while they were tasty, they were barely warm. We ordered a mixed grill and a couple of other dishes which were just OK. The spice level was extremely low and again the temperatures were just warm, not hot. We ordered a bottle of red wine and they served it in small white wine glasses. We could see other tables with the appropriate stemware. In summary, the food was simply OK and serving sizes were small for the $. In addition, the overall service was unsophisticated and slightly awkward. It was an undifferentiated experience and we will not return. read more

Went there for dinner. The head waiter possibly owner passed us the menus to choose in the waiting area while table was being cleaned up. While we were finishing off our dinner, the same lady came in and told us the table is reserved for another guest; if we need more time we can go to the front to continue our conversation; i was in the middle of my tea post dinner. I thought that was very rude and improper. Furthermore, there are much better restaurants for food In that area. As another commentator stated in the previous feedback, the restaurant is a hole in the wall. This was my first and last time to go there. read more

Where do I start? The Food? The Ambiance? Or The Service? I'll start with the food. Absolutely delicious!!! This is my 2nd time visiting the restaurant and I was amazed by the food again. The Kerala shrimps in the appetizers was so good and it was spicy, the tandoori mixed platter makes your stomach full just by seeing that meat hanging on to a stand. And the butter chicken was one of the best I have ever had. The Ambiance makes your experience even better. The waiters did a great job in serving and explaining about the food, the ingredients used and etc. Enjoyed every bit of it! See you soon Verandahhh!!! read more

Most horrible experience of my life !! Never setting foot again in this restaurant . Customer servise is extremely bad . They treat white and Indians separately . Others people below have the same experience so it feels comforting that I am not alone . Kiran's and Indika are far far superior in terms of food and customer service . Here the servers and the managers are very rude especially to Indians but for white they roll the carpet . Food is also extremely mediocre . Terrible drinks lousy martini which was pre made and left in the freezer cost me $22. Food was average and overpriced. No second chance for this restaurant.the biriyani was good. The food was good but not worth the price. They need to have a professional bar tender. All martinis have two shots of liquor and not to know this is amateurish. Showed up here on a Friday night. Dinner for 2. No welcoming host, just a, "how many?". We were seated right away, the restaurant was half full. It took 8 mins to get menus. 20 mins to take our food order. We had to ask for drinks - seriously?. They didn't have a drinks menu. Very annoying exchange there to place drinks order. Drinks served 5 mins later but our scotches were literally 1 centimeter tall WITH ice for $15 a piece. See the picture - pitiful. 55 mins into our arrival we received our appetizer. It was peshawari kababs, chef specialty, but unfortunately it was cold. It's now about 1 hour and 15 mins in, no sign of dinner yet. First & last trip here, no doubt. read more

This is my first Yelp Review. I went to this place after reading your Yelp reviews only to leave this place quite unimpressed. I have experienced better authentic/elevated Indian food than this (I should know.. I'm Indian and I've travelled to/lived in countries that serve some of the best Indian food I've had). I ordered the butter chicken, but it was quite unappetizing to find very coarsely minced big pieces of cardamon/other spices in the curry that got stuck in my teeth every time I took a bite. I also ordered the lamb shekh kebab which was fairly dry and cold when it came out and a whole lot of oil seeping from it. The only good food I had were the samosas and the naan. The biggest reason why I am giving this place this rating is because I think they need a more efficient staff. I had to ask for utensils (and so did quite a few other customers) after a long time of waiting. Food took a very long time to come out and was cold when it came out. I asked for them to box up my food and for the check which took them about 30 minutes to get done. They also have a reservation only policy and a strict formal/semi-formal dress code policy (neither of which are mentioned anywhere on their website or on Yelp). If you go here, except uncertain wait times. Overall, I am impressed by the aesthetics of this restaurant and it is beautiful. But the food and service were meh. read more

Ok we were excited to try a new upscale Indian place tonight. I called to make sure that they were open tonight and was assured that they were, however when we arrived we were told they only accepted reservation diners... ummmm ok ? Why didn't they tell us that earlier? Fine .. but then the manager or whoever came to tell us wasn't even apologetic or accommodating about the mishap. If this is a sign of what is to come .... I will just do what we ended up doing after being turned away... go to the place around the corner. You know where I'm talking about ! The hostess and manager were both unprofessional. This place is not yet ready for prime time. We had a reservation for 8:30pm on a Friday night. We were seated right away, which was probably the highlight of the evening. Our table was in a really loud corner of the restaurant closest to the front door. Not ideal - we could barely hear each other. The table was completely bare - no place settings or any other table decorations to speak of. Okay, this place is new, so they get a pass on that. But it only got worse from there. The service was practically non-existent. We received a food menu right away, but it took over 30 minutes to get a drink menu, even after repeatedly asking for one. After about 45 minutes, we finally had our drinks in hand. There was something floating in my wine, but at this point I didn't care, so...bottoms up! Our entrees arrived after about an hour, but we still did not have any utensils or even a napkin! We had to remind the server that we had nothing to eat with, after which we finally got our utensils and napkins. The food was actually pretty good (the only reason I'm giving two stars), but our entire evening was spoiled due to the poor experience. This place is obviously going through some growing pains, which is understandable for a new restaurant. But at least make sure you're fully staffed up before opening. Poor service is not excusable when you're charging these kind of prices! Shape up or you won't be around for long! read more

I came here the other day with a group of friends and was not disappointed. The staff here is very friendly and attentive and we were given our food fairly quickly especially with having a big group. The food was great! We had the chicken tikka masala which was pretty good, and the lamb. I asked the chef to make it as spicy as they could and they catered to that! It was the spiciest lamb dish I have tasted. Also, I met with the owners and it turns out they are the only ones that have rabbit right now. Very sweet people, this is there 3rd restaurant together they have opened in Houston. Definitely don't go during the week though it was so dead in there that the staff paid too much attention to us and it was incredibly awkward. There were a couple times my friend and I caught the staff taking pictures of me, it made me uncomfortable. It could have been because they are trying to market during the week, but with out my permission it just gave me weird vibes. read more

This place is great for a more nuanced take on traditional Indian food. While we prefer the ambiance of dinning in at this place, during the pandemic we have been takeout and have not been disappointed. Our most recent visit was over Valentines day weekend though we did not partake in their special menu (and in fact had picked them because we didn't want some over prices special, we just wanted good food). We started with the bread assortment and the Trio Tikki platter. We also had the black lentils (Dal Makhani), the veggies ( Milijulisubzshee), the sea bass (Mirchi Mahi Tikki). The sea bass was juicy and seasoned extraordinarily well. While the lentils were good we perhaps expected more considering how long they were cooked. The veggies and the Trio were delicious - we just we knew more what we were eating (our only really complaint with this place is that the menu really needs more description - else you spend a lot of time googling). We finished with the Indian mart (just a sampler of several desserts) and the spiced chocolate lava cake. The sample was delicious though very sweet (and again not sure what we were eating) and while the cake was good we were expecting more spice. They make takeout very easy and our order was ready 5 minutes early. read more

Wow. What an amazing dinner! The spinach kebab was delicate and had a wonderful smoky flavor. The tandoori appetizer was presented beautifully, with a puff of aromatic smoke. Incredible flavors, tender meats and a lovely sauce. The apricot mushroom biryani was unique and delicately flavored. The goat taarkorma had an incredible sauce, it was tender and delicious. I have always loved Indian food. I thought it was impossible to preserve the unique and wonderful flavors in a fine-dining setting. That was, until I found this place! The restaurant is awash with the elements, sky, air, water, fire and earth. The presentation of the food is artful, to say the least. Discovered verandah on yelp and decided to try it for dinner one night with friends. It's an Indian restaurant but unlike any other I've been to in my life. I enjoyed every aspect of my evening, from the atmosphere, to the service, and the delicious food. For the appetizer, we had the tandoori chicken platter and it was exquisite. We also got the paneer Tikka and my friend wanted it extra spicy, which they definitely were able to deliver. We enjoyed the very popular vegetable biryani which was very innovative and delicious. My favorite main course was the Tariwala chicken, it was delicious( different from the usual chicken Tikka ans butter chicken). It was light and I didn't feel too heavy after eating it. Their lamb Rogan Josh was so tender, it just melted in my mouth. We tried the delicious kheer, malai kulfi as well. Will highly recommend this place to anyone looking for an Indian dining experience. All 6 of us left the restaurant full and satisfied. Will be back for sure! read more

This place has a lot of promise because the food is wonderful but the way the restaurant is operated is subpar. I came for their new price fix lunch. The salmon and paneer were very delicious, although the portions were quite small for the price. The $12 bottle of San Pellegrino sparkling water was absolutely outrageous. When I received the bill, I understand why after the waitress dropped off the first bottle and poured two glasses of water, she immediately asked if she should bring us another bottle despite still having some water left in the bottle. I'm glad I declined. Add to that a mandatory 20% gratuity and a bottle of sparkling water was $15. For such a high-end restaurant, I was also surprised that the waitress took the silverware off our dirty plates, and moved them to the side. I intended them to be swapped out when the entrées came, but we were left with our dirty silverware. The place was completely empty, which did not add to the vibe. Overall, the chef appears to be very talented, but the front-end operations and decision to rip off customers with sparkling water left what should have been a good meal having a bad taste. read more
