I've tried many Indian places including other upscale restaurants in Houston. None come close to Verandah for the great taste, freshness and hospitality that they offer although being comparable from a price perspective to others. Their Biryani is the best in town and to be frank haven't experienced such taste in California, NJ, or Texas. The chef is very particular about the ingredients and ratios that goes into every dish and they CARE, yes really care for 100% customer satisfaction. During my recent trip to India, I witnessed many Verandah dishes on the 5-star hotel menus in major cities in India. So in theory, they are bringing the best Indian delicacies to Houston town. We stumbled upon Verandah earlier this year, and gosh! were we thrilled to finally find a progressive Indian restaurant in Houston that also provides warm, personal service. There are of course other fine dining Indian restaurants, but I find the service to be, shall I dare say, stoic? :) The innovation and quality of food reminds me of some of the best Indian restaurants I have visited - Benares (London), Rasa (Bay Area), and Tamarind (NYC). BTW, the first two are Michelin starred, while I recently found out that Chef Sunil was an exec Chef at Tamarind. I strongly recommend trying out the Chef's tasting menu, which my wife & I thoroughly relished on our 15th anniversary. From their regular menu, my favorites as a vegetarian are Saag Paneer, Kalonji Baingan and Nargisi Kofta. My wife confesses she can't pick just one as her best from their roster of chicken and lamb dishes. This is a restaurant that doesn't rush you. They let you take your time to unwind, sip their well-crafted cocktails, discuss an important business deal or, as in our case, make happy memories to cherish for a lifetime. Bon Appetit! read more

Recently we visited a restaurant call Verandah on Kirby. I was denied a service there by their manager because I had a baby with me in stroller. We went there around 1:45 PM on a Saturday and restaurant was empty, there were only 2 tables that were occupied. As we entered, manager came up to us and asked me to show him my baby which I thought was super awkward. He asked us how many people are dinning and we told him just us two and the baby. He then went and told us that they don't allow strollers and I understand that can be a safety hazard during emergency A lot of restaurants ask us to park it on a side, which is totally understandable. I told him we can leave the stroller, and take her carrier/convertible car seat or he can provide us a high chair. He then told us that they don't have a high chair, and their furniture is "too sensitive" and if we were to put her carrier on it his furniture might break and therefore he can't allow us to dine in there. My husband and I are foodies we have ate at many restaurants with our now 11 months old and we have never been told that. Later when I logged into yelp/ google to read their reviews, I noticed that this place treats Indian customers and families differently then their "white" clientele. No where on their website or yelp it shows that a restaurant is not suitable for kids. read more

We love trying out the various new restaurants ITL, and when we heard the news that Chef Sunil and Anu were opening Verandah (we had previously been to The Great W'kana) we were excited to go try. We have now made a few trips and the we always end up raving about the quality of food. Chef Sunil is really a master of his art and every item we've had here has been exceptional. The place is intimate and cosy. Anu is always around to mingle with the guests and make personal connections. The decor combines the traditional with the modern really well, for me the ambience just elevates the food a couple of notches. I would certainly advise to make a reservation before heading here, as the space is limited and it can get really busy. read more

This is one place you can never go wrong with. Upscale Indian food with taste and real " zaika". We went with few friends last week and the chef Mr. Sunil took personal care to serve delicious veg and non veg dishes. Rumali Roti or kalongi naan with signature mushroom matter and tadka dal are my few favorites. Sunil is master in cocktails few to name Banaras paan Mojito or spicy one they are absolute delight. We were extremely happy to see a long time favorite Great W'akana move inside the loop and close to home. Verandah, the home of Chef Sunil and Anupama is a great addition to the Indian food scene inside the loop. The menu is authentically Indian and the flavors take me back home. The owners take time to walk around and talk and recommend. It is the kind of place you linger around for a while and enjoy the hospitality and the food. They are still in the "soft opening" phase and I could probably complain about the service but the food won me over. Yes, I will still go down to Hillcroft and Sugarland for an inexpensive Indian food fix but when I want to dress up and enjoy fine dining, I will be seen at the corner table at Verandah. I will highly recommend their biryanis and do not miss having kulfi as a dessert. read more

Just came from a wedding party catered by them. Omg food was horrible . The apps were soggy. The main course was hakka food there was more batter then there was chicken or Manchuria veg. The Greek salad wasn't at all Greek!! Baba ganoush...is more like burnt eggplant. The chicken gyro was deli meat looked like spam...I can't believe it was this bad. The falafel looked like mini penises and were rock hard. The food sucked big time there was 25 plus guest went to Taco Bell. We know wakhana was always shit food but now Verandah same shit food same shit service. Horrible service . Neither owner was present and staff was rude and sucked. Staff knew zero about food ! Made me mad a friends wedding went this way. Sorry Sunil and Anu this is inedible and horrible!!! read more

Crispy lentil pancakes, Tandoori Shrimp, Paneer Tikka W'Kana (if you usually get Palak Paneer try THIS one, so delicious!), Dal Makhani (black lentils - my husbands favorite), lamb chops (my friend didn't even offer me a taste - she "exhaled" them), my husband had the lamb stew which he loved,... too many tasty things to list here. I'm astounded at negative reviews, must be interest in lower end Indian dining (this is not it). I've been to Verandah 3X and the SW Fwy restaurant once. The food is superb, on Kirby the location elegant. Sunil's food is so unique and complex, with fresh ingredients and special cooking, that I wonder if the clientele appreciates it. This restaurant is not for the casual trendy diner, it is for those who are interested in fine food. Please don't think I'm a food critic or food snob ... I love the Central Market sandwiches. My wife and I stopped by for dinner Wednesday with our infant daughter in a small stroller. Only two tables had guests, one of which was a family with a young boy. As we walked in, we were asked if we had a reservation (empty restaurant but apparently reservations required), told that they don't allow children under the age of 8 (despite the boy eating with his family), and that there was no room for a stroller (the closest table to us had ample space). As the conversation continued, the manager explained that if we really wanted to stay, we could put the stroller in the corner and place our daughter's car seat on the floor. Even if the food is great, no customer deserves to be treated this way. We left and enjoyed a spectacular dinner at Pondicheri (a block away), where we were greeted by the manager and staff as if we were family. read more

I don't do Yelp reviews. But this just bugged me enough to do one immediately. We just got back from dinner at the Verandah. The food and the ambience was terrific. Kudos! We ordered our food and wine. Someone or the other was checking on us constantly. It was great. Food came out quickly enough. What ruined the evening was the manager/waiter - dude in the Grey jacket! After we were served the food no one came to the table. We finished the food and were chatting for about 30 minutes. Still no one. Then this guy comes and tells us we had been at the table for an hour and a half and they needed the table for another reservation! No asking about dessert. Nothing. Just leave! And when we pointed it out to him he made a lame apology but still wanted us to leave. Don't see us going back and certainly telling others to avoid it as well. Don't care how good the food was. There are other places with food just as good and significantly better service. read more

Finally, Chefs Sunil and Anupama have a restaurant that does justice to their talent! We went there for lunch on Saturday and had a meal that delighted the senses. The food was delicious and tastefully presented, reminiscent of the five-star ITC hotels in India. While we waited for our food to come, we were served Mathri wafers which were crisp and fresh. It was a refreshing change from the mundane Papad that many restaurants serve. The appetizers were good. We tried the Trio Tikki platter and the Dahi and Goat Cheese kebab. We got three entrees, and all were very well prepared, each with an entirely different curry, which is rare in Indian Restaurants. The Lotus stem koftas were perfect with slices of lotus stem floating delicately in the curry. It is hard to pick, but the best dishes were the Chicken Biryani and Kathal Biryani - Each was cooked to perfection with spices letting out aromas that took us back to India. The ambiance at the restaurant, the attentive service, and the food were all wonderful. The entire experience left us wanting to go back for more. We look forward to trying out more of Chef Sunil's Dum Pukht creations in the coming months and years. read more
