They give you a lot of bread. The salad was large. However my main course was disappointing. The flavor was great but the portion was not. I paid $22 for the Chicken Genovese. They should have served it over a bed of pasta. Pasta is cheap so the small side dish of pasta was insulting for the price. Plus they only use spaghetti which is disappointing. Spaghetti is ordinary. My husband and I stopped here for dinner on a Sunday afternoon. The service was friendly, eager to serve, and professional. Our waiter offered helpful recommendations and was attentive to our needs. The good came quickly and was very good. I had the veal and eggplant parm, my husband had the beef tenderloin. My serving was enormous, his was enough to satisfy. Both dinners were very good. Great food and wait staff. Although the management needs some improvement. Visited last Friday, the manager was extremely unprofessional as he was arguing with a waiter in front of paying customers. The situation was handled very poorly and unprofessionally on the managers part. Have heard other situations as well. Went last night July 30. She ordered a raspberry cosmo. Terrific. Then fried calamari. Greasy and large amount of fried batter. Then salsas arrived. The oil and vinegar dressing tasted like a chemical and we suspect the vinegar went bad. Didn't eat it. Then her eggplant parmigiana and my chicken parmigiana arrived. Eggplant was flaccid, without breading, greasy and frankly disgusting, my chicken was deep fried with think fried covering which sluffed off, Kentucky fried chicken would have been better, the "marinara" sauce on each dish was dark dark red and did not taste like marinara. It was like it had been warming all day and was down to the residue. Our carrot cake was taken to go and while the slice they gave us was huge the cake was completely dry, not at all moist. With great amounts of icing which had only the taste of sugar. That went into the trash. I am very confused by all the positive reviews. But, in all fairness, we left before actually tasting the food. We were driving through the area and chose this restaurant because of the good yelp reviews. When we walked in, both my husband and I noticed that the place smelled bad - dining area had a faint fish market smell mixed with the smell of musty carpet. The interior wasn't easy on the eyes either - the carpeting looked ancient and screamed 1970's, and it was dimly lit (although, maybe it would have looked worse in brighter light). I had my reservations at this point, but we sat down anyway and started looking at the menu. Then, the table next to us got their meals. The pasta sauce looked wrong. It smelled wrong. One patron's plate appeared to have spaghetti in red sauce with a side of potato chips! My husband and I looked at each other, knowing we were thinking the same thing. We ended up leaving the restaurant without ordering. I do have a high bar for Italian food (my Italian grandmother was an excellent cook and my mother still is), but I was prepared for a very average Italian restaurant experience. I grew up in this place and it has been 20 years since I have been back, suffice to say I still love it.

Well, if you can get past the '60's throwback decor and tuxedoed waiters....this place has some pretty good food and very fair prices. On a Tuesday evening the dining room was nearly empty at 6:00 p.m.. I was not in the mood for Italian food - but the Hub always is! So he had a special of Shrimp fra diavalo over spinach tortellini, and I ordered a salad to start and the fried oysters....after grilling our server to be sure of their freshness and quality. He said they get fresh fish and seafood in several times per week.The oysters came with a choice of veggies and potato or spaghetti. I asked if I could have cappellini instead, and he said yes...without informing us that it would cost and extra $1.50 - not that I would have minded so much as not being told ahead. Just a formality. The salad for $3.95 was large enough for two, and fresh and filled with a mix of lettuces, olives, tomatoes, cukes, & red onions. Quite decent though the only H.M. Dressing is their oil and vinegar. My fried oysters were surprisingly delicious...light, crisp - not greasy -and huge. There were 12 on the plate and a heaping portion of pasta in a separate bowl. The marinara was a little thin and nothing special; my husband's spicy sauce was good. The shrimp were good, but I did not like his neon green undercooked tortellini at all. It certainly was plentiful. We skipped dessert to head over to the nearby Snowman...but I asked which desserts are H.M. The carrot cake and rice pudding. (Not of interest to me luckily!) Our bill came to $47.00 before tip with 2 glasses of wine. The wine selection is also reasonably priced. I would try Verdile's again - having been so impressed by one of my top favorite foods..Oysters! Back last night (Wednesday) and the place was absolutely PACKED! Our server was sweating profusely in his tux, poor boy...but someone on staff should have suggested he mop up! I started with a cup of Manhatten Clam chowder - a soup near and dear to my heart. The texture was odd- overly thick- as if they had poured a can of crushed tomatoes into a pot and added no other liquid...but the flavor was delicious, and well spiced. I minded the sand in some of the clams...but they were plentiful. For entrees, my guy had rigatoni with calamari in marinara sauce, and I had the special of Verghetti spaghetti with salmon and asparagus in a "basil-tomato" sauce. While I detected absolutely no basil, the tomato based sauce was thick with cream and parmesan. I had expected salmon pieces and grilled or sauteed asparagus. Instead, it was a generous whole salmon filet- excellent - perfectly poached and fresh, but the asparagus may have been frozen and was just tboiled- luckily not too much - so it retained a hint of crunch. It had no flavor having been cooked thusly, but once mixed into the sauce- it was fine. The home made spaghetti is not like packaged spaghetti at all- but it is very comforting and satisfying- almost like a thick Asian noodle. I liked this dish very much overall and at $13.75 thought it a true bargain. My husband's marinara was tasty thsi trip - but the tender calamari was SO fishy tasting to me. He enjoyed it - go figure. This is our latest last-minute-go-to place - when we suddenly decide there is ntohing in the house and want something close to home and inexpensive. I took one bite of my meal, asked my husband if he thought he'd eat it for lunch, and had them pack it up. AWFUL food. If you're looking for casual Italian in this area, go to Red Front. If you're looking for fancy Italian, go to Lo Porto's. DO NOT go to Verdile's. The sauce tasted like someone opened up a can of tomato puree and dumped it on pasta. No flavor, no salt, no garlic. Awful. I had eggplant parm and the eggplant was thick and mushy, also devoid of flavor. Really, strikingly bad food. I rarely am this harsh on a place, but honestly, I would have preferred a can of Beefaroni... and I'm a vegetarian. They seem to have found their niche with the older (retired) crowd, so good for them if they can keep their family business open with that clientele. If you have any functioning taste buds, skip this place. read more

Verdile's is a local favorite in Lansingburgh with great dishes and generous portions. Their chicken verdile is delicious, as are their Italian dishes. In 2019, they also served out of this world corned beef and Irish soda bread the week leading up to St. Patrick's Day, and hopefully they'll continue that tradition in the future. Some reviews have noted a dated "1970s" interior decor, but that's part of what makes the entire dining experience so cool. The staff are attentive but not overbearingly so, which is a delicate balance for any restaurant to meet. Can't wait to go back! read more

My wife and I went to Verdile's for the first time on a Monday for dinner. Since many restaurants are closed on Monday we were happy at first to find a place that was open. The place was not at all busy although it was dinnertime with only two other tables of people already seated. Whenever we dine out at other restaurants we always order either chicken parm or eggplant parm so we are familiar with about how much they should cost. At most restaurants the meal includes a small salad and pasta and of course bread. So this is what we ordered. The bread was fine. We found out that salad was not included and had to be ordered separately. We later found out that each salad cost $8. We are used to paying about $34 to $40 total when we order these items at other Italian restaurants Our bill was $64 total without dessert or coffee for both meals which seems quite high for what we received. This did include 2 iced teas The eggplant was very mushy and you couldn't really tell what it was. It wasn't like slices of breaded eggplant . The chicken had the texture of a frozen cutlet rather than a real piece of breaded chicken. There was adequate sauce and pasta but the quality of each entre was lacking. The service wasn't the fastest considering the place had at least 3 servers and only 3 customers at tables. Our server/waiter was polite enough but it took the food a while to arrive. The decor seemed very outdated and old as if they didn't want to put any effort into keeping the place up. We will not be returning to Verdiles and would not recommend it. We had thought since it had been around for a while that it would be a good quality Italian restaurant but it was mediocre at best and we were very disappointed. We feel we wasted our time and money and feel we would have gotten a much better meal at one of the other Italian restaurants we frequent such as Testos or even Olive Garden read more

Asked for a side salad, it was big enough to share! We asked for a bag for the leftover bread-for our girls-they gave us a whole new big piece, with butter! Really nice. I love this place. I will eat anything they have. I know for a fact that the sausage, several pastas, meat sauce, marinara sauce, and pasta sauce are made inhouse. The food is fantastic. This is an old school restaurant. They do not spill money into jazzing the place up. It has been the way it has been for a LONG TIME. If you think you are walking into a fancy million dollar chain, you aren't. People go here because the food is made EXACTLY the way it was made it 65+ years ago. For those who go here expecting to be dazzled with flashy decor, this isn't your place. If you want to go for great old school italian food, go here. My favorite is the chicken parm. I have been a big fan of Verdiles for over 25 years but I am seeing the quality and quantity go downhill. The veal cutlet with eggplant parmiginia was simply a veal cutlet with the thinnest slice of eggplant on top, it wasn't a layered eggplant parmiginia but only 1 thin slice of eggplant. Freshly fried oysters were only 7 of them, the time before, I had gotten 14 oysters. The half canned peach which always was on the plate now was 4 very thin slices which were less than half of the half canned peach. The Chicken A La Verdile ordered arrived as Veal A La Verdile, I kept it and it was tasty but it wasn't what I ordered and then I was charged for Veal A La Verdile which is $2.00 more than the chicken, this charged was fixed. The freshly tossed salad came without the oil and vinegar I ordered and when it went back to the kitchen and returned to the table, there was such a small amount of oil and vinegar in the salad and salad itself has gotten much smaller in size. I am saddened by this review I am writing and the fact that my husband doesn't want to return to what was once my favorite Italian restaurant in Troy for so many, many years! read more

Family-run, family style, an unbroken chain of hospitality for seven decades. Ever been in the bar during a snowstorm? Talk about a cool vibe. It feels like Sinatra could emerge from a back room with Sammy and Dino in tow. Ask the waiter what's good and your taste buds will send you a congratulatory greeting card. They take pride in being able to make a ton of their food in-house. My latest fave: the modern and delicious chicken-walnut wrap. Our kids started eating their white pizza before they had teeth and are still going strong now they're in college. Look up and view the smoke extractors that were in use til NY State pulled the curtain down on indoor tobacco use - many a fine stogie was smoked there and if you had the honor of doing so early on New Year's Day you were part of a pretty select crowd. The third generation is going strong and while I won't be around to see it, I'm betting they've got at least another 70 years of great food ahead of them. read more

What a poor excuse for Italian food. I was actually offended by how horrible this was. How is this place in business? The Gazette recently gave it a glowing review, and now there's no doubt in my mind the restaurant paid someone royally to write it. I've eaten at many, many places over the years, and this meal was so epically bad that for the first time in my life I was inspired to write a review and spare others the horrific experience. THE PRICE: When you get charged $15-17 a plate, you expect at least decent-quality food, prepared right. However, what you get at Verdile's is a meal from a can (which is arguably better that what they're serving). I've had better quality food at highway rest stops. OLD FOOD: Simply put, the food is not fresh, and whoever is in that kitchen doesn't know how cook, especially not Italian. I'm grateful I didn't get food poisoning because I was quite convinced I would. Example: My family and I ate there on a Saturday. It was confirmed that the "soup of the day" was actually *two* days old and that some regulars come in on Monday specifically because that's when the soup is "mushiest"...Is that even safe? More like "soup of the week"... The sauce? Vomit-inducing. Bitter, acidic, and straight out of a can. As if it wasn't even flavored or simmered properly. The wine marsala sauce? Thick, sweet goop gravy, and utterly tasteless. The meat (which is basically everything on the menu)? Tough and also tasteless. If they couldn't get the texture right, at least add some spice -- like, maybe salt? (I VERY modestly use salt and have a high-sensitivity to it, but I was actually ADDING salt to my dishes... highly unusual for me.) And you know how I keep joking about food from a can? Well one of our dishes actually featured a peach from the can -- just plain, untouched, straight from can to plate. *hits head on table* SERVICE: This was the only decent part of the experience, and I have to give credit where credit is due. The hostess was very kind and the wait staff was attentive; it was clear that the manager ran a tight shift. I observed that certain waiters had great rapport with their regular customers, which I found to be very pleasant. Still though, this all seems somewhat irrelevant when the food quality is as poor as it is. SO BASICALLY... Spare yourself a potentially dangerous meal and go to a real Italian place -- anything but here. My entire family ordered different dishes, and everyone agreed that gourmet dog food from a can might have tasted better, and we've never agreed on anything before.... so the fact that the food made everyone lose their appetite was pretty amazing. Like Testo's, Verdile's is an old-time Lansingburgh Italian standby. It's interior has higher ceilings and a lighter decor than Testo's so it feels more open, but retains the 50's atmosphere when it was probably most recently decorated. Ah, Verdiles. I know it's set up like a scene out of Goodfellas, but I don't care. I have always had a good experience, even when they have a packed house. My favorite is the white pizza (I usually order one to eat there and one to take home) but I also love their shrimp scampi. Prices are reasonable, and the wait staff is excellent. Falling down since Michael gone....service not good...waiter removed empty salad and bread plates and placed them next to empty table on our side. Request for butter forgotten...had to waive the waiter over to remind him. Food was mediocre. Seafood dish caused both my partner and I stomach discomfort through the night. Dining room was halfway empty on a Friday night. High point of Verdile's is the cocktail lounge with cheese and crackers and white pizza. The place has a funny smell when you walk in and it is dark and depressing looking. The waiter was there quickly and seemed to be in a rush, which was surprising because there were very few people there. the silverware was dirty and the very small glass of wine was dirty as well. He rushed my guest and me to place an order and the food arrived within five minutes. Microwave! The home made pasta was dried out and didn't have much flavor. the eggplant looked brownish gray ans was not appealing in the least. The slice of tiramisu was so thin they must have used floss to cut it. Even the coffee was bad I brought half home and when my husband open the container it looked so bad he felt sick; it was tossed in the garbage and after several days I am still upset that I spent so much money on such a terrible food. read more

Old school but not in a good way. Friday evening, I ordered the stuffed sole special and it arrived on a plate with a piece of lettuce and - I kid you not - a canned peach half. The accompanying tasteless mashed potatoes and canned pickled beets came in separate bowls. The whole mess was unappetizing, including the chunks of fake lobster in the stuffing. When our waiter came to ask if I wanted it boxed I told him "no, thank you, I didn't like it" and he said nothing. It was a $15 dish and was on our bill in full. Way to keep a customer. My son's pasta with meat sauce was mystifyingly flavorless, husband's veal and peppers was passable.
