Our first visit last night. I only heard about this restaurant accidentally while searching something else on Yelp. I had bookmarked it and decided to give it a try based on the other reviews. We had a very nice experience and this is now yet another restaurant option for us in Middletown, although a little off the beaten path of Main St. Middletown, where you will find so many great restaurants. The restaurant is located in the Tradewinds Plaza on Saybrook Rd. in Middletown, which is a small strip mall. When we first got there we decided to sit inside, but the outside patio looked nice so we moved. The patio is shaded and a nice space but you basically have a view of the parking lot and the road. It was a such a nice night that we enjoyed just being outside. The menu has many Napolitana pizza choices as well as a number of mainly Italian type (pasta) entrees. There are also some nice appetizer choices, salads and panini sandwiches. Since my husband and I do not usually agree on a pizza choice for sharing he decided to get a small pizza and I decided on the stuffed sole, as I am usually looking to have a fish dish when I go out. Both choices were excellent! The choice for pizza is small and large, so he ordered a small sausage pizza, which was enough for him, for me to try a slice and to still bring 2 slices home. The pizza was excellent, and yet another option for us, as we already love Mondo and Krust for great pizza in Middletown. This is right up there! My stuffed sole dish was very good and reasonably priced. In addition I enjoyed a specialty drink - Cherry Cosmo, where they brought me the extra in a glass that didn't fit in the already large sized martini glass. They have a wine selection, as well as several craft beers on tap. The only downside for me is the location, as we are closer to all the restaurants on Main St in Middletown. But we will definitely try this again, and bring some friends who are always looking for a new place to try. One of the owners came out and spoke with us and thanked us for coming. We were pleasantly surprised by our visit here. A bit out of the way and away from the downtown area. The food was delicious. We had a couple of sandwiches, bread is made on site, which were huge and very tasty. Penne a la vodka was spot on and the salad was great. Staff very friendly and accommodating. I was a little nervous about the location and how small the place was (the restaurant is only a month old and the dining room isn't set to open for a few more weeks), but I went in for lunch anyway because all the yelp reviews were good. I must say, I was not disappointed at all! The decor was very modern and well designed, and you can see all the fresh baked bread on display. I ordered a chicken parm sub, because that's usually the sandwich I pick to judge the quality of a place I've never been to before, and it was fantastic. The bread was just out of the oven, crusty goodness. The sauce was supreme, and the chicken cutlet was fresh and fried to order. Frank, the owner, seems like a really great guy who knows what he's doing. He was happy to give me information about the place, and told me a little about his history. He used to manage Pepe's in New Haven, which is world famous and deserves to be, and that's a huge endorsement of his skills as a pizza chef and manager. I asked about the pizza and Frank even gave me a complimentary pizza slice to go (definitely on par with the best pizza in New Haven). So far, perfect scores from me for customer service and food quality! Last night was the second time I tried this restaurant and I was just as disappointed as the first. The waitress was a sweetheart but clearly frazzled trying to tend to every table in the restaurant. The food was very disappointing. I was told the shrimp they used was wild caught shrimp and it was most definitely not! We ordered shrimp scampi and shrimp fra diavolo and both were awful. The scampi was more like a zuppa de pece, all watery & soupy. It was hard to eat as it kept splashing. The fra diavolo sauce had no seasoning to it at all. It tasted like a can of crushed tomatoes. And the pasta ( linguine) was so overcooked we couldn't even roll it on our forks without it breaking. It was complete mush. Those dishes were $25.000+ and so with a dinkey artichoke appetizer and a bottle of wine, it was a $77.00 bill (plus I tipped her 20%). Shameful..... read more

Wednesday is happy hour day. from 5:30 to 8:00 they do have drink specials but the free food is the star of this show . from ravioli to chicken sautes stuffed breads house made soups salads wings stuffed shells . you never know what you will get. my only wish would be some more craft beer selections/specials two drink minimum is well worth the meal you will get. and if you like trivia that also goes on Wednesday as well. This is an overall good restaurant if you're looking for good food and plenty of it. We came on a Friday night and It took a while for the waitress to take our order. I was in town for a family function and we stopped into Vero. It was an all around amazing experience. Great ambiance, great service and excellent food. I would for sure recommend. I love the decor, especially the succulent wall! The calamari is fresh & home made, so delicious. You can tell everything is made fresh with quality ingredients. I asked the owner, he said he even buys organic. Some of the reviews discuss pricing, and in my opinion you get what you pay for. You can probably find a cheaper pie elsewhere, but the quality will be cheaper as well. Bread is to die for. I usually try to avoid and I ate three pieces ! Ordered a gluten free pizza through door dash as listed on the menu option in addition to another small cheese pizza. Delivery driver dropped off only the small cheese pizza - when I called to check the status of the gluten free pizza the women on the phone quickly responded that they aren't offering gluten free pizza anymore and I needed to call door dash for a refund. Outside of the refund, I was more disappointed that the restaurant made no attempt to let us know that something we ordered wasn't available, after we waited for an hour for the food. There was no apology offered for the issue. This isn't the first time we've had accuracy issues with orders placed - we won't be ordering from Vero Cucino anymore. I would recommend updating menu offerings on delivery apps that you are choosing to partner with to reflect your available menu. read more

My sister and I were made to feel extremely unwelcome here Saturday evening. The two female servers on shift Saturday evening were rude, flippant and unprofessional in their service. Their demeanor included dirty looks and speaking to us in an aggressive manner. One of the servers aggressively flipped through the pages of the one menu we were provided when we said we wanted to start with drinks in an extremely annoyed and aggressive manner. I called several times and requested to speak to the manager and conveniently he/ she was "gone for the evening." Based on how we were treated, I did not trust leaving my name and number as I knew it was one of the two extremely unpleasant servers answering and the manager would more than likely not get the message or return the phone call. Nonetheless, we will not be returning or ever recommend dining here based on this unfortunate experience. read more

Second takeout experience here and this was just as good as the last. This place is absolutely a new favorite. The arugula salad with goat cheese and walnuts was great! The arugula was fresh, plenty of goat cheese, and the spiced walnuts were incredible. I ordered mine with chicken, which was also delicious and perfectly cooked. Takeout salads aren't easy to make perfect, but the kitchen has somehow figured it out. I had been to this restaurant for a professional meeting 2 months prior and came home telling my wife how good the food was. Tonight was our anniversary and we chose to go here for a dinner on a quiet Sunday evening. What a horrible experience. While we waited and waited we overheard the few other patrons asking where their food was. Their order was never put in. When our order finally was brought to the table, the spaghetti and meatballs looked good, however, that wasn't what I ordered. There is nothing worse than one person eating while the other is waiting for theirs.that didn't happen here because my wife's linguini and clams was not linguini and the clams were too hard to eat. Twenty minutes later my spaghetti carbonara was brought out. This dish is supposed to be served with a white sauce. It came with oil, only oil, enough to use for my BMW. We were going to try to order a pizza to go instead but the other dinners still weren't getting theirs so we're decided to go. We asked for these dishes to be removed from our bill leaving only two glasses of house wine. They refused. We wanted to pay with a coupon worth $30. They told us that we had returned dishes the last two times we had been there and they would not do it. We had never been there together before! Crummy service, awful food. We had dinner in the dinning room during our first visit to this resturant. Everyone around us was eating pizza, ordering dinners was our first mistake. The food is bland and slightly below average, but priced way too high. The wine list was also bland and just way over priced. The quality in the dinning room seating, the apps, food and wines just wasn't there. Our server was a pleasant young lady who was attentive and concerned........she was the only highlight. We were not served dishes as described on the menu despite pointing that out. The pork was dry and flavorless the chicken was prepared as scantily as possible. Both dishes were priced way above market price and simply not worth it. They do not serve a salad with entrees. We will not be returning. We live right around the corner from Vero and it had become one of our go to spots. They have decent pizza and bake their own bread. They are on the pricier end, but you use to get a lot for the money. Lately however, that hasn't been the case. Today we ordered a Italian Bomb, which is suppose to have prosciutto, genoa, salami, cappicola, cheese, lettuce and tomato. It's $15, but a big sandwich on their homemade bread. Ours had very little meat and it was surprisingly hot. Who makes an Italian cold cut sandwich hot? We were disappointed and have been with our last couple of orders. read more

Ordered Chicken Parm, Slice of pizza and side of meatball. I'll start with the pizza. The man at the counter decided to make me an entire small pie because he didnt want to give me a old slice, which I found was very kind and showed much pride in his job and the quality of the food that goes out the door! Pizza was in fact some of the best I've had around the area. Nice NY style pizza sauce, with excellent cheese and the dough was nice with those wonderfully delicious black chars around and underneath and on the crust. Meatball was nicely spiced and tender with a very nice sauce to accompany. The star of the show was chicken parm. I've had many in my life and this one was by far the BEST i've ever had. Loads of gooey cheese, two large, perfectly seasoned and cooked pieces chicken, over spaghetti with an excellent marinara. I saw all of these great reviews and heard murmurs about this pizza being competitors to Frank Pepe's. There is no way shape or form this pizza compares to Pepe's. This pizza was 'not bad' at best & our entire dining party agreed. Maybe we just had high expectations. One of my dining companions has a dairy allergy which he notified the waitress of & asked if their meatballs were made with cheese. We were assured no. Meal arrives with a layer of grated cheese on top. Um? Did ya forget about the dairy allergy? My salad was nothing great. Croutons were good, but was accompanied by a bland bottled dressing. Ordered the spinach artichoke garlic knots. They were overcooked and stuck to the plate so badly we had to scrape them off and then just leave the rest. After reading all the five star reviews and the fact that this place is right down the road from us, my wife and I were very excited to try their pizza. The pizza was OK but definetly not 5 stars. Maybe we went on an off night or something. The pizza was slightly on the salty side and the dough was very tough/chewy. The pizza wasnt bad, but definetly not the best Ive ever had. My expectations were very high based on the ratings here. I don't have anything really bad to say but I was disappointed. First off, our server was very friendly, funny and happy to make recommendations but he was clearly a bit "in the weeds" and not as attentive as I am sure he wanted to be. We waited a long time for our food and when my companions' meals arrived my pizza did not arrive until approx. 10 mins later, that is not acceptable. Our server was very apologetic. I was impressed with the bread basket, it was soft and warm on the inside with a crispy crust and served with good olive oil which was lightly seasoned. Mom ordered the fresh shucked white clam sauce over ling., my future daughter in law ordered gnocchi with a pesto sauce (which was not on the menu but the chef was more than happy to accommodate), I ordered the fresh shucked white clam pizza without mozzarella. I have to say that I loved the crust on the pizza BUT I ordered no mozzarella because I like to taste the flavor of the clams and seasonings. The pizza was overloaded with the grated Romano cheese to the point I thought it had mozzarella on it and was very salty due to so much cheese, the clams were shucked and put on the pizza whole which were very chewy and hard to eat, I understand that they are fresh shucked clams but they should have been chopped up and spread over the pizza, not huge lumps of tough clams. The sauce on mom's ling and clams was spectacular and full of flavor, the pasta cooked perfectly BUT, again, the clams were very tough and hard to chew. The gnocchi and special made pesto sauce was delicious. As I stated before, our server was overwhelmed and therefore unable to be attentive, we waited a very long time for our food, waited a very long time for our check and waited a very long time to pay. I get that servers make their money in tips and therefore prefer to have a lot of tables, but when it effects their attentiveness to their customers, this is not acceptable. I was a server for years so I definitely know the business. We really liked our server and understand that it was not his fault and tipped him a little over 20% but still, he could have been much more attentive. All in all the experience was not a bad one and I will give them another try, but I was definitely disappointed on our first visit. read more

I don't know what kind of witchcraft is at work at Vero but for the first time in 10 years living in the area, I may have to stop complaining about the mediocre pizza in Middletown!!! The Vero pie I'm having tonight is, hands-down, the best pizza I've had in Middletown and, for that matter, the surrounding area. My only regret is I'm leaving on a trip and won't be able to try anything else on the menu for a week!! But if tonight's cheese pizza and Big Spud pizza are any indication of the rest of the menu, great things are happening at Vero!! read more

I have only 3 words: De !!! Lish !!! Us !!! Friendly staff and beautiful space. Our meal was amazing from beginning to end and let me tell you, the "devil is in the details". A carafe of ice water as soon as we sat down. Chilled glasses for the white wine and beer. The calamari appetizer was light and crisp... probably the best I've ever had. The house-made marinara was outstanding. Crisp, fresh salad with house-made croutons and fresh-baked bread. I think the dipping oil was my favorite part of the meal... with just a little fresh rosemary... perfect! For entrees we chose the eggplant rollatini and the linguini w/ clams... both were incredible. And then the desserts!!! OMG! The spumoni and the tiramisu brownie!!! I told my server that I was going to need a cigarette after dessert (and I don't smoke). I wish the owners of this new establishment much success! Highly recommended! And to those who might complain that the prices are a little higher here: you get what you pay for. If you want a $8 pizza, go to Dominos. I certainly don't mind paying a little more when the ingredients are fresh, local, high-quality and house-made. read more

I had the pleasure of attending opening night @ Vero and I could not be more impressed ! The people were so kind and patient explaining the specials and dishes they had. I was even more impressed when the food arrived, homemade breads for Panini's and amazing pizza. I am 100% Italian so I am a hard sell on good Italian food and sauces, but they nailed it. I felt like I was back on the Amalfi coast. All of this in a warm and cozy place. Not enough good things to say about the people , the food and the ultra modern décor. read more

We went to this restaurant three times this summer and our food was wonderful. I think their pizza is the best in Middletown and we are Mondo and Jerry's fans. Pizza may be as good as Pepe's or a close second. The sandwiches are served on homemade bread and are huge. I could go there and just have bread and olive oil and be quite satisfied. Very good salads. I am fussy about pasta sauce and like theirs a lot. Just writing this review makes me want to get in the car and go there. Highly recommended. We go to Florida for the winter and look forward to returning to this restaurant every summer. Only negative is name of restaurant is hard to remember. read more

What a find!!! Pizza in Middletown has never tasted this good! The creative decor makes you feel like you're tucked away in NYC - and the staff is welcoming. The menu ranges from traditional options to super creative, making it hard to choose. Sooo, of course we had to order 2 pies! First up was the "Big Spud" - garlic mashed potato w/bacon...talk about the ultimate comfort meal - fantastic! We dove in so quickly that I forgot to take a photo. Next up was the "Antipasto" - ricotta, arugula, prosciutto & cannellini beans... Wow, this unique combination is love at first bite! The crust is thin & crispy and you can instantly tell that they use the freshest ingredients. I already know which pies I'm going to try when I return - though I should consider leaving some room to try one of their salads and dessert pies. Decisions decisions ... I have edited my entry after a fantastic and genuine response by the owner. They still need a little work but based on the efforts reflected in the owners message i think this will be a great place in the future. Knowing that Vero Cucino Rustico has been open for a month or so, we decided this was the spot for my birthday dinner. Give it a try based on the recommendation of friends. Well we were overwhelmed by average food and a disorganized kitchen. Ordered two entrees and two small pizzas as well as two apps. The pizzas never came out.......we had to ask for them to go. really! I get it new place.....the bill $122 without a tip { the wait staff were good}.....how about comp me a pizza instead of all the apologies. Eeks Not Yet!! Joe S. read more
