I have just moved to Daniel Island and I took my mom to Vespa Pizza as we were craving Italian. The service was so fantastic. We were asked right away where we wanted to be seated and as one of the staff cleaned the table and we waited, we were asked by two others if we needed to be seated. Our water glasses were filled right away, orders taken within a quick about of time and food delivered hot and fresh. I asked for an extra plate as my mom and I wanted to split the pasta and they split it for us and brought it out on two separate plates, both which looked like a full serving size to me! There was plenty of chicken in our pasta and the pizza was full of flavour and authentic tasting. We definitely had plenty of leftovers. For the price you pay you get exceptional value and quality. The owner came to Our table and asked to pour our bottle of wine, which is nice but he didn't say who he was so my friend thought it was some random patron that had walked up! Lol We tried 2 pizzas: the first was sausage and jalapeño peppers but subbed pepperoni for sausage. The sausage is crumbled, which I prefer chunk like you get in NYC or Trenton. The pepperoni was good, but jalapeños were good, but some were extremely spicy! The second was vegetarian with olives on half. I wouldn't have ever tried this but my friend wanted to. Ordered Pizza well done because the first time I ate here the cheese was raw, Wings with Buffalo sauce and Fried Calamari. Cheese was barely melted on my "well done pizza" as I ordered it but tasted good after putting it in the oven again, at home, Wings were delicious with the spice rub but had zero buffalo sauce whatsoever, and the Calamari Jerky was well thrown in the trash because you couldn't even chew it! After my initial experience with Vespa, I figured they deserved another chance. As I initially stated, I wanted to like the place, but I didn't get an opportunity to try the food. Some time passed and I decided to give Vespa another shot. My experience made me want to definitely update my review from a one star to a four star! I came in on the Sunday following the Wide Spread Panic show and it was pretty slow. I was happy with that so I could get some food and relax watching the end of the game on TV. The day before, leading up to the concert, was a mad house on DI so this was a welcomed difference. We started off with a Caprese Salad to share. It was a good size for the money and a better than average quality. The kicker was the reduction on the side... more of that please. Much better than just a balsamic drizzle on top. Mix that up with the fresh basil, mozzarella, and tomato for the perfect bite. For entree's my friend ordered the Chicken Parmesan. It was huge so she offered me a taste. The chicken was flattened out and breaded as it should be. Not just a chicken breast thrown on top of some spaghetti. The most unique part of the dish were the bucatini noodles. I hadn't had them before and really enjoyed the consistency of the long hollow noodles compared to an angel-hair or ziti pasta. I really wanted to get a pizza to see what I was missing out on before. I was torn between a couple choices but the waiter suggested I go with my gut and opt for their most popular sausage, pepperoni, and bacon. No mistake here. Out came a gourmet style thin crust pizza from the wood fired oven. It had just the right amount of char on it without being burnt and the toppings were plentiful. I typically order normal pizza well done but these Neapolitan style ones are done just the way I like them. The trio of meats were excellent and worked well together without overtaking the flavor of the sauce and cheese. It was excellent. I figured the food would be good but, my issue before lied in the staff. I must say that I dealt with multiple members of the staff and they were all polite and attentive. The only issue was that my friend ordered a "brunch special" drink and it was initially forgotten. When we reminded the waiter, it was after "brunch special" time so we were charged full price for it. The drink was brought out after a reminder and a quick fix on the check was no issue at all. It was taken care of quickly and professionally. Unfortunately, my Patriots lost that day but Vespa had a big win. After my initial experience, they made a huge comeback and I will definitely be back for more. Vespa has really grown on us. From a place we first visited and wondered if the pizza was being made one slice at a time to much improved service and good specials. I also think that there's a subconscious reason why I like Vespa: The Ice. This is not your typical cubed or chunked ice being served in the drinks. It's just the right size and doesn't water down your beverage. Am I the only one? Vespa's menu works well for a quick lunch on Daniel Island, a place to stop after work for a beverage (bonus points for Peroni on tap), or a take away pizza and pasta. The calamari with red onion and marinara are a good starter. The meatball appetizer is nice too. In the mood for a sandwich? The Chicken Parmesan and Greek Pita are good. Really nice hand cut fries too. We usually take a look at the pasta specials first. There's usually something good on the menu. The Shrimp Rigatoni is the stand-by choice. Can't go wrong with the Margherita pizza or the Crispy Prosciutto and Pineapple. They also do a kids pizza that's good too. Recently tried on of the Calzone specials and had to take half of it home. Good dough and some pesto inside that make it all work. Good location in the Daniel Island area. Reasonable prices. Specials on the menu worth a look. And the ice....there's something about the ice. In the battle of "fancy pants" pizzas along 526 I'd say Evo is still the clear winner but Daniel Island has a welcome addition with Vespa Pizzeria. I bet the outside seating would be perfect on a warmer or less windy day. Place was clean & had a nice feel. Staff was friendly and professional as well - I would be too if I had the promise in my future of delivering pizzas around Daniel Island on a Vespa scooter. Certainly would beat my days mucking around Kentucky for Dominos in a Saturn 4 door reeking of cigarettes and pizza, and held together by duct-tape (No exaggeration, just ask my wife about getting bonked in the head by a piece of interior paneling on our first date when the tape lost it's stickum.) Okay, enough about redneck towns with dime draft (yes, you heard that right, too) and people smoking in the grocery store produce section - let's get back to Vespa. Started with the White bean garnished w/ truffle oil. I too was surprised by the pureed white bean soup. I puree at least part of most soups I cook but hadn't seen a fully-pureed bean soup. It had a very good flavor and the beans weren't cooked to "mush" so you still get a bit of texture. Next was the prosciutto pizza and the large amount of arugula worked well with the blend of cheeses. Crust was substantial enough to hold the toppings and was baked almost to perfection - little inconsistency in the center-most points. I wasn't that impressed with how the meat played out on that pizza - nearly impossible to eat and there was a lightly "off" aroma reminding me more of seafood than prosciutto. I'm a meat lover of all types, shapes & sizes, but it just didn't work. There are a couple other enticing options on the pizza menu and I found the bolgnese pasta quite compelling. Next time... I stopped drinking average domestic beers once I stopped drinking 12 in a sitting so I expect to pay a bit more, but 6 bones for a brown ale draft was a bit high. Maybe the Daniel Island diggs necessitates it. I would normally give this place 3 stars overall, especially since there is another great place in relatively close proximity but will throw down a 4 star for promise. read more

This is a place you can totally skip. The pizza was delicious as was everything else, but I've been in there 4 times and every time, it's the world's slowest service. If you can squeeze in a 2 hour lunch, then by all means, eat at Vespa. I went with a co-worker 3 times for lunch and every single time, we had to take our pizza to go because we sat waiting. and waiting. and waiting. And we were the only ones in one half of the restaurant. Honestly, if they weren't all the way on DI, I think they would be out of business. I picked my homegirl up for lunch today and we decided to try this place. She's been here before as she lives on the island and really likes it. We walked in for lunch and it wasn't very crowded. The vibe is very trendy, and the service was great. It is a super cute restaurant (with MUCH more ambiance then it's predecessor, Soda Water Grill). The place serves local and sustainable ingredients, a big plus for both of us. Since I had pizza last night I decided to go with the white bean soup and a candied pecan, goat cheese and roasted beet salad. The salad was very large and fab-o! I expected the soup to be whole beans, but it was pureed. It had truffle oil in it and was yummy, but very, very heavy. In fact, 7 hours later and after a grueling 1.5 hr hot yoga class I'm still full from it! The pizza smelled delicious and my friend's food looked yummy. It was a grilled sandwich made of homemade pepperoni, hand pulled mozzarella and heirloom tomatoes. It came with a side of Caesar salad, all for only $8!! She said it was super good. The downside to the this place is the overpriced beer and wine. Who doesn't want a few drinks with pizza? The pizza was Thin crust, thick slices of pepperoni and wood fired however I think the sauce was made of canned tomatoes. (Not bad though). The chicken pita was a little dry, the chicken was flavored with lemon juice only. I ended up adding hot sauce and mom added ranch which made it much better! As an owner of a VPN (Verace Pizza Napoletana http://www.pizzanapoletana.org/index_eng.php) certified Neapolitan pizzeria I have to say this was the best wood-fired pizza in the Charleston area. My manager and I made a special trip to Charleston this past Monday just to try out the various wood-fired pizzerias in the Charleston Area. The bad reviews here are from people who just don't understand or have a clue that this is not your typical American style pizza. The staff was very friendly and the food was delicious. We did not tell them who we were until after we had eaten. I commend their manager as he went out of his way to make us feel at home, answering questions and talking about the struggles and successes they have encountered. Went here with my parents - my dad is Italian so he knows good pizza. Ours (all 3 of them) were burnt on the bottom, some more than others. The prices, honestly - a little outrageous at least for dinner. Personally, I think they need some tweaking. We were watching the guys make the pizzas and it was clear that they were NOT pizza makers. My vote still goes to Orlando's Pizza on Daniel Island.
