Stop! Do not order from Vesuvius! They have gone so far downhill in the last few years. I ordered through Yelp/GrubHub. When my order was late I was about to call and inquire when my neighbor came by and said she found a bag of food sitting on her doorstep when she went to take her dog out. They delivered to the wrong address and no one even called to say it was delivered. Brought it inside and the order was wrong. I called to remedy it; they put me on hold for 15 minutes and then said they wouldn't deliver the correct order. They offered a 20% discount for next time. I told them to keep it. So, my first visit didn't go too well. I left a yelp review, and I figured that would be the end of it. The owner messaged me and invited me to come back, he sent me a gift card in the mail. I figured why not,he was nice enough, I'll give it another shot. This was like five visits ago! It has been my go to place since. Came here with a large group. Pizza was delicious. Clean place. Soda machine was flat. One of those touch screen pick your own out of 10000 choices. Chicken kabob salad was good, however the chicken was too plain, cold, and wasn't marinated enough. House dressing was odd so I had to ask for ranch. Good size salad though. It's too bad that the food is so good, but the no refill thing shows how chintzy they really are. It scalds me no end to be charged $2.09 for a soda from the Freestyle Coke machine and then not be able to get a refill. I can just as easily go across the street to Qdoba and get the same drink from the same machine for $0.30 less and a refill! Maybe you'd have more than 3 people in here on a Thursday night at 630.... Ordered the bbq pizza and mesclun salad. Only gave two stars because the pizza was good. My "mesclun salad" was just a bowl of spinach with two cherry tomatoes and sprinkle of walnuts. This place is a hit or a miss. Some days the food is awesome and tasty, others it's not so great. I'm not sure why they advertise "pasta". I came in 2 in the afternoon, was told the guy that makes pasta wasn't in yet, 4 pm the same thing. Another day I called to place an order at 9pm, they said the pasta was done for the day. How hard is it to make pasta? Please, don't advertise it if you don't want to serve it. The subs and pizza are pretty good. I advise you to stay away from their over priced and not so great salads. I ordered a steak tip salad that came with a handful of lettuce, two cherry tomatoes, some carrot shavings and literally 4 small little pieces of over cooked steak tips, and they want $8.50 for this? When I want pizza, this is my go-to spot. Thinner crust than most, real Italian style. Saturday night I opted for the small Tuscan pizza, just as described in the menu. Delicious Italian sausage with sweet roasted peppers and equally sweet caramelized onion, mozzarellas salad Romano cheese, just perfect! I am so in love with this place. The pizzas are by far my favorite, perfectly made with the right amount of dough thickness, sauce, and cheese. My all time fav is the steak bomb pizza, just trust me on that. In addition to the amazing pizza, they have a great selection of hand-crafted sandwiches. Don't skip out on their dessert offerings either. I'm addicted to the gluten free almond joy cookies they serve. I always get a few to stock up for later. You're not going to call it your go to place, however there food is good. Service is very good. They are consistent in quality. Very fast. My wife only eats gluten free and surprisingly they have an awesome gluten free pizza. I honestly like it more than there regular pizza. This place has the best pizza around, a true NY style pizza! But the staff is atrocious! I have only seen such sophomoric behavior on the back of a school bus. These kids will ruin this business unless they are reeled in. They were more interested in their own conversation then taking my order. This is the worst customer service experience .The manager Brianna does not understand customer service whatsoever. Unfortunately Kayla the other associate did not either. We love the pizza here however tonight after waiting for an hour waiting on hold for several minutes and calling back three times giving my name for a pick up in placing the order the order was never placed. Then arriving and waiting at the S Salem location restaurant., And finding out they never placed our order From our phone call, we ordered our pizza again waited another 20 minutes and then it was wrong. I've ordered take out from here in the past. The food is delicious and better quality than most take out places. The reason why I gave them a three star was because most recently I placed an order for delivery. I ordered an Italian sub, two slices of pizza and a small order of wings. When I called to check on the status of my order after waiting for 45 mins. They said that the delivery driver was out and I should be getting it soon. An hour and 10 minutes later I receive my order. The pizza was ice cold, had to pop the wings in the microwave to reheat them and the Italian sub was soggy. Extremely disappointed. Not sure why I keep going to Vesuvius..probably for the yummy tuna, but at this point its not worth it. 50% of the time they get the order wrong...and forget to add items that cost money (chicken or cheese on a salad). The young staff are usually rude and act as if they don't care whether their customers are happy. This is the last time I pay for something that I don't get...I won't be going back. Happy Father's Day to all the dad's on here! My siblings and I got my dad Vesuvius in Salem. Walked in and had a few minutes to wait while they finished out pizza, fries and chicken tenders so I looked around and what not, saw bunch of dust, on the ceiling, inside looked extremely dirty and unsanitary. The food was good to my family which made me happy. Personally don't like the sauce is to sweet for me, not a fan but my family likes it. Dad is happy and that is all we wanted. Little back round about me PERSONALLY hating them! About 2 years ago I was hired at Sweet Java's (which they also own) for a not even a month when it just opened. I am an extremely hard worker who is always early for work. I was soo very excited for this job because it was so close to where I was living at the time too and I love to make food and see people happy. I was hired to be the muffin maker anf food prep shit! was let gontrew a fuckin phone call! I guess "I wasn't catchin on fast enough". (NOTE!! I knew they just opened and were trying to work shit out, recipes out and shit!) After 2-3 hopeful weeks of maybe me havin a full time job or career (cuz they made it sound like they are all one big family with their employees and have fun and blah blah blah... more false promises and hopes from a crappy minium wage job!) When the owner left me am that voicemail on my phone sayin "we have to let you go, your not catching on fast enough." That hurt me in so many ways emotionally and mentally so badly to the point I fell into a bad depression, felt hopeless, had lower self esteem then I already do! I felt stigmatized and extremely discriminated in alot of ways! I have had multiple jobs in the past so I got my hopes up yet again with a new company. All I got was more words of just false promises and hopes thrown my way! I have heard that from so many jobs so when sweet java's said "I was doin good" the day before they let me go so rudely and got my hopes up! First off I always tell alll jobs at interviews about my learnin disability, my soberity and my mental health issue like my severe anxiety and ocd. The male Owner would not let me mix the recipes together he would do it whole I watched but he will let you cook them in the oven thats about it. The owner did all the prep work and I just cooked it and ran it upstairs! I can read and follow directions when things are hand on but if you tell me to sit beside you and watch you how am I supposed to learn. I need to do things hands-on and I stated it multiple times to them to saying "hey can I please try and make them please?" and he said "oh you're not ready yet"!! Been workin in kitchens and food jobs for years! told them my experiences! They dont give out the recipes to employees which honestly would help them if they did so the owners dont work themselves to exhaustion or death. I was sooo heart broken cuz I loveeee to cook and be in a kitchen and thought I was killin it for them. Made a few mistakes I am a human and everyone makes mistakes on a new job but I got the hang of it or so I thought!! Guess not to their standards. It takes me a little longer to get things cuz of my learning disabilitiy butttt I am a hands on person and thought I caught on very quick after week one when he started to let me put the muffins in the oven! I even came up with some good recipes and suggestion for example like those egg Frittata I came up with a veggie one and a steak n cheese one! once they let me go though it made me feel not good enough for a long time! Soooo this is why I personally do not like to give them my $$$$$ because they didn't give me a chance to work for them. lasted a month! it made me feel like shit! In my eyes you don't let someone go over the phone or say shit like "your not catchin on fast enough." so yeahh I resent Sweet Java's, Vesuvius and the owners because I told them when I got hired I am a hand on person I learn quicker doing hands on then watching the owner do everything and just tell me what to do. If I do it myself I will learn faster. that is all. They will never get my $$ of me and I am slowly getting my family to boycott them and gonback to captains in Swampscott or to Monte's. While the sandwiches we ordered were pretty good (not great), I would have given 3 stars but the customer service was so poor that 1 star is a gift. Phone etiquette was non- existent and when we went to pick up our order it was worse. After waiting at the counter, a young woman finally came over, the phone rang and rather than ask the party to hold and wait on us, she took what was obviously a personal call. After she ended the call, she did not even apologize. We paid and while waiting for our order, I did mention (nicely), that she should waited on the customer waiting and then taken a personal call. She said it was the delivery driver asking a question. This was obviously not true as we heard her side of the conversation. When our order was ready she just said "all set". No thank, nothing. Salads leave something to be desired. My wife ordered a beet salad this evening and upon getting it home and opening it up we found the salad container half full with spinach greens, just a handful of beets and was missing all of the goat cheese my wife loves so much. Unfortunately this is not the first time with an unsatisfactory salad experience. Went to Vesuvius for lunch today with some friends. All of the sandwiches were amazing. The Turkey Emily (turkey, cole slaw, Russian dressing and Swiss cheese, Tuscany (grilled chicken, honey mustard, roasted red peppers and provolone cheese and Chicken Parm sub were all perfectly cooked and so filling. Their homemade foccacia was fresh and a perfect addition to our sandwiches. The service was great. We were greeted with a smile when we walked in. Sandwiches were promptly brought out to our table. I've been here before and generally I would say the food is pretty good. My last visit - not so much. I ordered a Caesar Salad with steak tips by phone ahead of time. When I got there much to my surprise I waited as if they were first taking the order. Okay so there a little backed up I figured. When I got it home I found a lot of lettuce and croutons and almost no steak at all. I could have almost counted the number of tips in the salad on one hand and they were tiny to boot. They will not deliver to all of Salem. It doesn't make sense that the pizza place (Rizzo's) and the Chinese place (Fantasy Island) that are across the street deliver to all of Salem but Vesuvius does not? I also want to point out that Tony Lena's in Swampscott delivers to Salem as well and they are further away then you are. When asked why they would not deliver to my address in Salem they said "it's too far". Well, you just lost a customer who really enjoys your food. If restaurants in Salem won't deliver to all addresses in Salem then why even be in Salem? I also want to point out that the staff behind the counter is very immature and rude. I would rather drive to Marblehead and give them my business then to give this place my money.
