They will not deliver to all of Salem. It doesn't make sense that the pizza place (Rizzo's) and the Chinese place (Fantasy Island) that are across the street deliver to all of Salem but Vesuvius does not? I also want to point out that Tony Lena's in Swampscott delivers to Salem as well and they are further away then you are. When asked why they would not deliver to my address in Salem they said "it's too far". Well, you just lost a customer who really enjoys your food. If restaurants in Salem won't deliver to all addresses in Salem then why even be in Salem? I also want to point out that the staff behind the counter is very immature and rude. I would rather drive to Marblehead and give them my business then to give this place my money. I live a minute or less away. Ordered on the phone for pick up pasta and a burger. Told it would be 20 minutes. Arrived 10 minutes later and was told, as I expected, that it would be a couple more minutes. Paid for food and it was ready several minutes later. Immediately returned to vehicle and was home in less than 2 minutes enjoying soggy and obviously old French fries and lukewarm pasta. This is the second time that something like this has happened at this location with our order. Between my wife and I we have a combined 30 years of experience in the food service industry. It is obvious given the complete lack of attention paid to the order in which food is prepared relative to the time it takes to make it and its hold time, and the inexperience of the counter staff (where the hiring requirements seem to be under 20 and female) that the management of this restaurant has little clue what they are doing. read more

The service is bad. The pizza is great. Had a young girl serve me and had a bad attitude about serving me. I asked for a slice of Hawaiian pizza. She grabbed it with her unwashed hands after handling money. Threw it in the oven then when I was watching her she asked if that was enough time to reheat it. I don't know maybe she should have. It was cold. Wanted to eat there she gave it to me and was told to have a nice day and then continued to have her conversation with her friend. Very similar experiences here, as well. The food is great, but the service is horrendous. Zero attention to detail. My family has eaten here about 20 times, and they have messed up our order half the time. Not a great percentage. They have forgotten to toast the bread after offering it to me twice and repeating the order back to me, they have not included salad dressing with a delivery order, etc..... I love this place, I probably eat here more than i eat at my house. I love their pizza, and my favorite sandwich is the Chicken Special. They make their own Foccacia bread, and its fantastic. I just grabbed lunch from here today again, no issues, never have issues really. Do yourself a favor and do not order from this shitdump. They have to be one of the rudest places on the north shore to order from, next to Rizzos. So, pretty good Vesuvius keep it up. I love getting an attitude when I say I have to pay by card over the phone. Especially, the huffing and puffing, it's so amazing I can't wait to call back and give them my card number. The"girls" answering the phone are some of the worst spoiled north shore stock you will ever find. I would highly recommend other places like Dinas, Omega, Pizza World, anything other than this place. If you have a problem with any of the employees there go talk to the manager, and he will make sure he has a date with them that weekend! He backs them up like you wouldn't believe. Big tough guy! This place has been disappointing recently. It had been a reliable and fast way to get lunch or dinner. Recently we have had very bad experiences. Last time the chicken Caesar wrap had hard and inedible chicken along with a piece of hard plastic. This time our order of buffalo chicken pizza was given to us as just plain cheese and the buffalo chicken fingers had the wrong dipping sauce. I have never been to the original Cafe Vesuvius location in Marblehead, but I can say that this is the best pizza I've had in the Swampscott/Salem area. They have a great variety of specialty pizzas. So far, I've had the Tuscan (ground sausage, red pepper, onion, garlic) and the Al Fresco (Fresh tomato, fresh basil, mozzarella, olive oil and fresh garlic). The ingredients are fresh and the crust is amazing- chewy/crispy and just the right amount of salty. In an area that is full of mediocre pizza joints, this place is a welcome addition. Looks like they're also looking to add pasta soon and they recently added desserts. Give it a shot- you won't be disappointed! read more

Seems like a 16 year old is running this business. The pizza is very good. However ... One time I called in for a to go order. Was told the computers were down and they couldn't place orders. I asked if they could take my order on paper and call me when it would be ready. No couldn't do that. Called 15 min later and they took the order. Most recently I called at 8 pm on a Saturday for a delivery. Was told they were not delivering any more because they close at 9 and dont deliver within 1 hr of close. I told the person on the phone they close at 10. She puts her hand over the phone and asks someone what time they close. Ok, they are delivering. I order my usual pizza. Then told 'we don't have portabella mushrooms'. I say huh you always had them before. Hand over the phone again asking if they have portabella. Yes they do have them. Order placed. Gave cc number. Delivery arrives. Driver says 'all set'. I say nothing to sign? She huffs and hands me the receipt. I ask if she has a pen. Nope. I get a pen and return to front door. Wanted to tip on credit card. Driver says cash tips only. The Ttl was about $25 for the order. I only had a $10 bill. Asked if she had change for it. I go get it and come to the door and expecting a $5 and ones. She hands me only a $5 bill. Frustrated, I just let it go without telling the driver common courtesy on tipping. Never ordering from here again. Flying Saucer here I come. read more

I saw some of the reviews below and was expecting something terrible but, I decided to give this place a shot. When I walked in the door I was greeted by a warm welcome, friendly smiles, and a clean modern atmosphere. I ordered the chicken Parmesan sub and a slice of buffalo chicken pizza. The chicken Parmesan was different than most. Instead of a savory robust red sauce, it was of the lighter and sweet variety. The Chicken itself was moist and coated in Italian seasoned bread crumbs. Also, unlike most restaurants who use bagged shredded cheese, you get a great portion of FRESH mozzarella. When I took a bite of the pizza (which is also sold by the slice) the crust had an excellent NY quality consistency. All in all, give this place a shot, it's a great addition to the north shore restaurant community. read more

We order delivery .. We ordered chicken Cobb salad , meatball sub, cheesesteak sub, turkey sandwich , chicken kabob sub , potato tots and sweet potato fries ... They forgot the chicken on the salad , the potato tots were horrible , (no flavor at all), and meatball sub was dry.. we called to complain and all they wanted to do was give a store credit ... my mother told them she wasn't ordering from them again and wanted credit to her debit card . They again said they would give store credit . After repeatedly telling them we were not ordering from them again they said they would credit us $9.98 .. Talk about being cheap. They didn't offer to bring new chicken Cobb salad or say they would take the salad off or bring new meatball sub with more sauce .. All they credited was $9.98 and that was after a lot of complaining.. we will never order from them again read more

I wish they had negative stars, especially for counter girls. I tried once again after dozens of visits since they opened, was told it would be 20 min arrived in 10 to see it sitting in a bag, politely asked twice if it could be mine and was abruptly told to "wait I'm busy" while stacking empty pizza boxes, then basically threw the bag of soggy food at me across the counter. When i opened it at home the order was completely inaccurate. As others have mentioned time and time again the food is great, when they get the order correct and better if eaten there.. and it's keeping this place open, even after reading the horrible reviews people still try it for the food. But also as mentioned, the staff, notably the girls behind the counter with the Valley Girl attitudes and lack of any concern for the customer in front of them, will ultimately close this place for good. I'm surprised how this continues as the family knows how to run successful businesses like Cindys in Swampscott and Vesuvius in Marblehead. (assuming its still the same owners) The only thing I could possibly guess, is these girls are the owners daughters and are getting a free ride. If not, they should all be fired as a thank you to the thousands of local patrons that have kept this place open and continue to pray for new counter staff !! Even though I've given 2 stars, I will probably try the place again, but my first visit was a mixed bag of ups and downs. Here is how it went: my wife and I walked in and the place looked similar to the restaurant that was there before; modern and clean. Placing the order was not an issue, the cashier was friendly but minimal. We ordered two chicken ranch wraps, an order of fries and two waters to go. The total was just over $22. The place was not swamped or empty, so the 30 minutes before the order was ready was quite unexpected, especially since a few people who ordered after us got their food before us and their food was more involved. The guy behind the counter was polite but impatient. We took the food and went home, when we arrived at home we opened the food and found that they got half the order wrong - one chicken ranch, one turkey bacon wrap. I have to wonder how that can happen, they were the same wrap? The food was tasty, even the one that wasn't ordered. However, both my wife and I were not feeling well 20 minutes after consumption. Again, I'm not sure if it was the food, but it seemed that way. The symptoms passed fairly quickly with the help of some tums. As I said, it was a mixed bag and I'm not settled on its worth as time moves on. I have another experience like this one, I'll never visit again. read more

She immediately puts you on hold, before you can get a word out, for 5+ minutes then says "i don't think we deliver to you" (10 minutes away). It is possible to be friendly, or even just polite, and busy at the same time. Either she is not good at her job (customer service) or the owners don't see it fit to hire enough people to get the job done correctly. We loved it when it first opened. Then the issues started. Wrong orders on pick-up. Missing items. Worst of all food quality went downhill. The pasta was rubbery and the eggplant soggy on last order. As the other reviews said, this place is not worth trying again. We have tried it twice and both times were disappointed. I'm not sure, but $20.00 is a lot to us and probably most people. More importantly, satisfaction is more important than money. We ordered a shrimp scampi pizza to be delivered just 1- 1/2 mile from the restaurant. Upon arrival, we paid for the pizza and found it to be ice cold, not hot, not warm, COLD!. It was not delivered in a pizza bag as all pizza shops use. We heated it in the micro and it was terrible. We called and asked for the owner and he never came to the phone. We were so upset, we had our son call them and he waited 3 minutes to be taken off of hold then another 3 minutes to be told the owner was on the phone with another customer and he would call back. Of course he never did. Not only is the product substandard but certainly the owners customer service is worse. We will never call them again and will spread the word in and around Swampscott and Salem that this restaurant is not worth patronizing. read more

The food is really good and I go here all the time. Awesome specialty salads and sandwiches. Pizza is great too. I was surprised to see that the rating was so low. After reading some reviews, it looks like people feel the service is rude. From my experience, it is pretty standard for a sandwich shop. Even if they were rude I really do not care because I would rather great food and shitty service than the typical boring alternatives at other sub shops who don't bother with specialty choices and basically have identical menus. Also, for the people shocked this place doesn't have 5 star service, if you want friendly service with a smile I do not suggest trying to get at a busy sub shop, go out to a sit down place. We normally order from this place about twice a week because of how close they are to our house. About one third of the time we order, they tell us they don't deliver to our area even though we are close by. Usually they realize their mistake and deliver to us. However, today the girl on the phone refused to deliver to us. When we asked to speak to the manager, she said he wasn't in, and wasn't willing to contact him to resolve the issue. She was rude and unhelpful, and quite frankly I don't know if we will order from them again given their poor customer service.
