The staff at this place is amazing! This place was recommended by another clinic because the one closer to me had a 6 - 8 hr wait time. I had to bring my cat here 3 days in a row because it was the weekend and my cat's vet was closed. Dr. Jason Dombrosky is great! They're very caring and so nice! The facility is very clean. I was impressed that they offer wash cloths in the bathroom instead of paper towels! They were definitely worth the drive from Castro Valley. They run a very clean and professionally staffed faculty that can respond to not only emergencies (i. e. when our Rhodesian Ridgeback was limping badly and it turned out after diagnosis to have a pulled muscle in his rear leg) to the more recent care they provided for my mother in law's cat. The care and kindness does not stop with the treatment of the animal but is always extended to the owner as well. My mother in law is elderly and is very close to her cat, was very worried about the condition of its claws. The Vets and technicians at VEG were skilled, kind and showed empathy for her concern. We worked primarily with Lydia and Dr. Kate and they were both fantastic! I spoke with Lydia on the phone before we came in (we were referred by Heather at OakVet), and by the time we hung up I knew this was the best choice fir our situation. And the follow up the next day was just extra icing on the cake. Thank you so much! I was blown away by VEG's customer service-- everyone we interacted with with positive, upbeat, professional and HELPFUL. It's extremely clear that everyone really cares about the practice, and in turn is well taken care of in their roles. I had A LOT of questions and each one was answered thoughtfully and thoroughly, but not in a way that was overwhelming or confusing. They were very collaborative with me on the treatment plan and very real about what MUST BE DONE vs all the things we could do and that various paths of treatment. I left feeling very confident in the treatment options I chose and felt clear and comfortable with next steps if it didn't work out as expected. Truly, amazing. And the little bell pepper seed packet I got was such a fun human treats after a scary stressful rush to VEG. And the speed of service-- wow! I know emergency services are always busy and obviously animals need to be treated on from most to least urgent, but I was amazed how efficiently and quickly everything was handled; we were in a private room within 5 minutes of arrival! Honestly magic. On the phone Lydia had told me approximately two hours-- I thought that was the wait time to be seen and was pleased how "quick" it would be, but that was actually her estimate for the entire visit and it was spot on! That tells me your team has a system and the system works! We will definitely be back for any future emergencies, and potentially for general vet visits. We had a horrible experience last night at VEG. I gave two stars because Dr. Powell was incredibly kind, knowledgeable, and professional. Unfortunately I cannot say the same for the veterinary technicians that attempted to draw our corgi's blood. I feel extremely guilty for not listening to my gut and leaving when I saw the first red flag. They confused our dog with another dog with a similar name (looked nothing alike) and luckily we were sat next to them and overheard the confusion and sorted it out. They were incapable of taking his blood. After four hours and repeated attempts stabbing into his leg to get a blood sample, they told us he needed to be sedated. They gave him sedation before they even took his vitals! Not safe. They also completely missed a paradoxical reaction to the sedation. Our dog was pacing, drooling, disoriented. He started growling at us and barking at photos on the wall. The vet tech told us we would need to give him more sedation. I did not know any better and only saw my dog in distress and reluctantly agreed. His distress increased. We agreed to allow the techs to take him away from us to see if he would be more calm. I could hear him screaming and looked over to see my happy go lucky sweet boy being held down by three people and muzzled while thrashing on the table. I ran over and removed him from their arms and immediately left. I understand they're an emergency vet working under emergent conditions and need to get things done... but at what cost? My dog is still curled in a ball quietly crying in his bed. They should have recognized that the benefit versus risk for him in that moment was not worth it and I should have trusted my gut. I think they were busy and I think the vet tech was in over her head and instead of swallowing her pride and getting the doctor she terrified my little guy. I hope I don't need to ever go back but if we ever have an emergency I will not allow vet techs to take him from me. And I will make sure the doctor knows what is happening! Ask questions. 2 months ago my dog was seen here for our first emergency vet visit and VEG was amazing!!!! I have not had good care from any vets we have seen before so know this review to be true! While the wait was pretty lengthy (it is an ER for pets and mine wasn't unstable so it makes sense), I loved the staff and the care my dog received. They are compassionate and let you stay with your pet for the duration of the visit - for imagining, shots, fluids, meds, exam, etc. they spent the time to get my dog comfortable before just immediately examining her and they send thorough notes home with instructions for care after. I did have an additional question the day after our visit and they didn't even hesitate to put the vet back on the phone to answer the questions I had! I have had nightmare-esque experiences with Sage Animal hospital multiple times, including one where they took in our elderly cat who had gotten run over by a car and then proceeded to tell me they hadn't taken in any cats, as I waited in the parking lot frantically since they wouldn't even allow me in...wtf how do you lose a cat that cant walk and Is dying, did they shove her in a cage and forget about her?? Anyways this review is for VEG, I called them and they sent me a text to register easily before arriving, when I arrived I was greeted warmly by the front desk. Their layout is amazing, nothing is hidden, everything in plain view, like an actual emergency room. No hidden doors or waiting alone in a cold office while hearing the yelps of other animals, wondering if your poor little love bug is okay. I walked past friendly doctors and nurses tending to a hamster, a bunny, and a dog. I now understand they help all animals. I wish they would have been around when I had my cockatiel, because I used to have to drive out to Brentwood to the bird hospital, because that was the only place that would ever see birds. I sit down with my injured pup in a warm and inviting, comfortable waiting room. The staff comes to me, takes his vitals, and does the visit from this room for my pup because he is a nervous wreck and can't walk. They are lovely and soft, not harsh like so many other vets I have been to. They understand these are creatures with feelings that are scared and in pain. We even left with a fresh baked cookie for myself and a little treat for my dog Buddy. They also were understanding that I don't have a lot of money, so we are trying some meds and cost effective ways for his injured paw, and if it doesn't get better, then I can come back at any time to get X-rays to further see if there is more damage than meets the eye. I wasn't guilted or pushed into anything. I can not recommend coming here enough! I was also referred by Bishop Ranch Vet to go here (who was not able to see Buddy because they had all hand on deck late at night to perform an emergency surgery). I trust them and now I trust VEG. This is the very best 24 hour animal hospital in the area. We came in the middle of the night with our 2 year old poodle who was in trauma. After calling 5 other emergency locations "at capacity" and unwilling to help in SF, VEG was not only immediately helpful over the phone but put me in contact with the doctor directly to asses. When we arrived, the vet tech was very patient with our very nervous and scared dog. Lots of kind words, gentle touches, and calm demeanor with the urgency that the situation required. Doctor Kate was also wonderful as were the other teammates who helped. We took our friends cat to VEG. I was worried because over a week ago we had to take his cat to OAKVet which was a disaster. I was apprehensive. From the moment we got there the difference was amazing. It was clean and friendly. Not only did the vet tech come out but so did the doctor. They took vitals etc and even after taking her back to do what was necessary, they brought her back out while they looked at the results. Our bunny, Ellie, was having labored breathing and we called around (so many places don't know or aren't able to care for rabbits) and was recommended this place. We were greeted, checked in, and talking to Dr. Dombrosky within minutes after arrival. He was very kind and thorough, and had started Ellie on O2 but she was too weak and passed away almost immediately. He and the nurses were all incredibly kind and empathetic. This is the BEST place for a bad situation. My dog was very sick and was seen by her regular vet on a Thursday and Friday for diagnostics, but nothing was found. I took her home with anti-nausea meds and she had received fluids, but by Sunday she was just as bad or worse. I took her to VEG, we were seen within 15 minutes, she had an ultrasound and an intestinal blockage was found. Dr. Dombrosky performed surgery on her on Sunday night and she's recovering very quickly. So, no waiting to be seen, great care, great staff, and they let me stay with my dog as long as I wanted and during the ultrasound. They have followed up with me to check on my dog several times. I feel like they took good care of me and my dog. Such a great place. read more

I recently just had to take my chameleon to an emergency. Since this was the only exotic emergency nearby it was our only choice. Throughout my life I have had animals and have had to take them to emergency from time to time, so I was familiar with the process. However, this place was so different than anything I have encountered. As soon as I got there, I was brought to the back and sat down. It is all open so staff know if someone needs immediate attention, it's all hands on deck. Everyone I encountered there was very nice and very compassionate. I also so next to us that owners had to step away for a few minutes and the tech sat with the dog that was all connected up, she was talking to her and petting her making sure she was comfortable and being loved. We took my dog here after he was sprayed in the face by a skunk. He was lethargic, weak, his personality was muted and he was simply not himself. We were extremely worried but the team here at VEG was very kind and Carolina Fabelo was incredible. She walked us through all of her thoughts, cost and recommendations of how to get to the bottom of what's going on. After further research, it was discovered that ingesting skunk spray can, in some cases, cause an attack on red blood cells and be extremely dangerous to doggies. A blood test came back showing normal red but high white blood cell count. They gave him fluids, anti nausea, and an anti Inflammatory to take for the next several days. Carolina checked in via call and text which added a level of personal experience that not a single other vet office provides. This is one of the many things that sets this place apart in addition to the fact that they prioritize your companion over money. After a couple days he wasn't feeling much better so we were told to bring him back. The second time the same team worked with Charley which helped us feel safe and comfortable. We ran some more tests which came back abnormal and threw the team through a loop but they had a couple answers for why could be going on. After further tests we ruled out several things but had no definitive answers for why he was feeling this way. They recommended we see an internal medicines specialist. After leaving and making this appointment (soonest was October 5th) Charley began feeling better and now appears to be himself again. They sent us home with parasite medication (although he tested negative it could have been one that doesn't show on the test) and still had his anti inflammatory to finish. He has been great for two days now and we could t be more relieved. The team here is top notch and Carolina is so patient and kind. read more

Despite the concerns we had with our dog's eye trauma, we came to VEG and experienced phenomenal care and hospitality. We considered ourselves lucky that we were able to be seen right away on a Thursday evening since we came from another hospital that estimated a 6 hour wait due to the current cases they had. Upon arrival, we met some of the kindest staff, from the receptionist to the vet techs. We really appreciated being able to stay with our dog through the process because she gets a lot of anxiety when we have to separate during vet visits. After our dog's vitals were checked we were offered water while we waited to be seen by the doctor. Our experience with Dr. Donner was an absolute dream! Her willingness to listen to our concerns meant so much. The care she provided our dog was attentive and thorough. We really appreciated her walking us through the treatment and what to look out for in the coming days. She's an amazing human! We're so grateful we came across VEG because in the event of an emergency we couldn't imagine a better experience for dogs and their humans. We live about 30min away and following this experience we realized we wouldn't want to go anywhere else but here! read more

I cannot recommend VEG enough!! This was truly one of the best veterinarian experiences I've had. My cat has been diagnosed with congestive heart failure for about 7 years now. Although she visits a specialist and a general vet during the year, there are times where she has episodes. We took her to the general vet when she was vomiting. But after returning, her condition worsened over the weekend and everything was closed. As her lungs filled with fluid, I rushed her to VEG at 2am and they took her in immediately and administered drugs to help drain the fluids. They also placed her in an oxygen tank and she stayed there for a full day. The staff and doctors there were truly amazing and took such good care of her! They were very communicative and kept us in the loop about her condition. They even let me hold a little kitten that resembled her during the time I waited there, just to comfort me! Although we were given a much higher estimate for her medical fees, she was discharged sooner and some of the expenses were not charged onto my account, which is rare to find from many veterinary offices. read more

Ended up giving her some IV fluids and anti nausea meds...Sent her home with some too, which I have not yet needed. The bill was very reasonable, as well (in my opinion). We discovered Veterinary Emergency Group by accident after having called two other vet offices during their business hours and no one picked up the phone. I'm so glad we did because they are fabulous! The staff members are all very professional and friendly and really care about your pet. We saw Dr. Chuck and he was great with our cat and addressed our concerns and questions. Our vet tech was equally as great. The facility is set up differently that a typical vet office. It's a couple of large open spaces and your pet is being looked and treated amongst the other pets, not in individual offices. The set up works. For the pet owners, there's restrooms, coffee, water, cookies, etc. One large room had funny pet videos playing and the other room had upbeat music. There's even toys and books for young children. The atmosphere really helps takes the edge off when you are worried about your pet. Oh, and they're cleaning all the time ... the seats/benches are wiped down after every customer. Hopefully we won't have another urgent need but if we do, we're coming back here! read more

I cannot say enough good things about this place. I have taken my own dogs there 3 times for various immediate emergencies. Not only were they able to see us quickly, but they allow you to remain with you pet and not do long car waits without them. Today was one of those days in every pet owner's life that we know is coming and hate. My Step-Dad's 11.5 year old Rottie was not doing well and we knew it was time. The SPCA would not allow him to be with his dog during the procedure, all the other locations wanted us to wait 8-10 hours. I had him drive over from the Peninsula at my recommendation. VEG were great when I called. They pre-registered us, got us into a nice, quiet room and were very kind and compassionate through the entire visit. This was my first time at VEG and it was great! I expected much less, having been to other emergency rooms: basically just a waiting area crowded with people and animals. VEG is not like that - you are in the middle of the treatment area with the doctor and nurses; everything is exposed, almost like they turned a normal vet clinic inside out with no walls separating you from the vets. I really liked participating in my cat's treatment, helping the techs and doctor with him and observing everything they did to him. I wish they were non-emergency, since I loved the way they practice. I wish more vets did this! read more

Unfortunately, I brought my pup to this location Sunday 2/11/2024 for fatigue and hunched posture lasting greater than 24 hours. I was pleased to have the vet assess my pup within 30 mins of our arrival. During her assessment, she performed range of motion exercises on my pups head. She believed my pup was in pain because she "whimpered when head was moved into the up and down position". She mentioned a possible cervical injury that warranted $650 x-rays. I disagreed with this finding, as I know my 9 yr old Yorkie does not jump on/off furniture nor does she play roughly. Another vet came over to provide a second opinion. He also performed range of motion exercises to my pup's neck and stated "she is having neck pain because she whimpered when I turned her head to the right, but NOT the left or up and down". Two vets, two different assessments and both are pushing for expensive imaging. I declined the images but opted for blood work. This was also a nightmare. I waited 3 hours in the waiting room for my pup's blood to be drawn. Then the vet came to me with her laptop opened saying "I would like to discuss the results of Honey's blood work". I was surprised to hear these results since they never drew blood on my pup! They were ready to give me someone else's results. When I explained that her labs were not drawn, she assured me a nurse would be out shortly to draw them. Yeah, an hour later someone finally came to draw them! And it took 3 times for them to successfully draw her blood. Once we left, my pup was more sick after the visit than before. I treated her with boiled chicken, rice, and $20 probiotics. My only advice is to go with your gut. These vets will try to upsell you with their scare tactics. read more

Amazing facility and every person we interacted with was friendly and reassuring. Our dog is old and they could have reasonably led with a full battery of xrays and tests. Ok so I wrote a fantastic review a few days ago to say how amazing and companionate they were taking care of my 18 year old cat. I brought her in because she was super lethargic. As soon as they saw her they recommended to start her on IV hydration. From there it went to test for a UTI, and a whole bunch of other test. To make the story short, she was was admitted and stayed for two days (sun &mon) with IV fluid and antibiotics to treat a "kidney infection". Cultures were taken to see whether or not she was on the right antibiotics. She came home on Tuesday. I just got the culture results today and there is no sign of an infection. What the hell????? So, in other words, my $4004 bill was literally just to hydrate her??? On Tuesday I had a chance to review all of the test results. Once I reviewed all of my cat's blood work result, it was clear to me she was in major kidney and liver failure. The numbers don't lie. I wish SOMEONE would have gone over all of the results with me and suggested to think about putting her down at that point. I am upset that financial gain is more important than doing the right thing for this poor animal. Doing the right thing is making sure I had ALL the information needed to make the right decision for my fur baby. I have scheduled to euthanize my cat next week because that is the right thing to do since there is no coming back from kidney and liver failure. read more
