This is my wife's and my go to place to dine out. We ordered two Ruben sandwiches for takeout the other night and they were by far the toughest corn beef we've ever had! Had lunch here with a friend. We shared a Corned Beef Reuben sandwich and each had a small mushroom barley soup each. The sandwich is solid with half a giant pickled cucumber and the soup tastes homemade with lots vegetables in there. We waited a long time for our food but it's because we did not realize that we had to order the food first at a separate counter before paying at another. Instead, we paid and was told the food will be delivered to our table. They apologized for the delay but it's not their fault. This is also a self-served place meaning that you pour your own water and you put your own trash away. We were told to leave the dishes on the bar counter. They also carry a lot of delicious looking pre-cooked items at reasonable price. Dinner menu looks delicious and again the price is reasonable. Will definitely come back. Parking Tip - There are some free 2 hrs street parking near the Lexington Visitor Center which is 2 minute walk to the restaurant. read more

Very much enjoyed my dinner at via lago tonight. I had the duck which was delicious and the berry crumble with vanilla ice cream. This was great too. The only thing I have to tell you is that the menu will be new tomorrow and both dishes I had will no longer be on the menu. But when we ordered a bottle of wine and was served glasses of the same wine instead...and then charged extra for the waitress error, defiant manager insisted the up charge was justified. Not cool. This place is so great. A wide array of food, some Italian, some generally American. I've been here for lunch several times. Large and affordable kids meals, large array of salads and sandwiches, both hot and cold. I was looking for a casual place I felt comfortable bringing the kids and this is it. The owner came over to say hello since she hadn't seen us before. Staff is really friendly and helpful. All different kinds of seating, booths, tables, bar counter. It seems like it would be an especially cozy place in the winter. Breakfast options look good too. One point: This would be a great place to come in the morning if it had espresso drinks and wifi. We recently had them cater a luncheon for my son's bar mitzvah and they were wonderful to work with. I was kinda annoyed when I found out that I had to handle catering lunch for a company meeting, but Via Lago catering made it easy. After searching their extensive menu on their website, I went with 22 of their sure-to-please bagged lunches (sandwich + cookie + chips + beverage for $10.50) plus a garden salad platter (came with 2 dressings on the side, and the citrus vinagrette was great!). They were so accomodating, letting me specify the sandwiches I wanted and even handled last minute requests like a reduced head count and my boss' preference that they provide "healthy" drinks like seltzer, as opposed to regular sodas. The day of, they came even earlier than requested and helped wheel the food to the conference room. I appreciate that they labeled the bags so we could tell what type of sandwich was inside. The sandwiches are definitely nicer than average - I set aside a grilled chicken/cheddar/mango chutney for myself (though I didn't love it) but the rolls were SO fresh. The cookies were yummy. Most impressive, everyone found a lunch they wanted and seemed pleased. I'd definitely use 'em again. read more

Lunches run around $6-7, panini's to sandwiches to soups & salads to wraps to pasta to daily specials and a make your own with an mind-boggling number of ingredients and sides, always fresh, and made to order. With so many goodies, my bill usually winds up more around $12. So yeah it's a lunch splurge, but a nice getaway from the office, especially for a lunch date. Somedays it can be crowded, but most of the time not. They sell frozen and take-out too, so that can be handy when you know you have nill in the fridge. I've never been here for dinner, or used the catering, but as a lunch spot, it's a sure bet. read more

Had dinner there before, food was good. Called Friday night to order take out, attendant informed they were busy and it would take an hour. We agreed and ordered anyways. One hour and ten minutes later I arrived, waited to inform that I was there to pick my order. Person behind the counter was extremely rude, said they told me it would take 90 minutes and needed at least 20 more mins to be ready. I was nice and informed they told me one hour, person still yelling and being rude in front of several other people. I cancelled the order. If you do not want to be yelled at for no reason in front of other people, go eat somewhere else. Very sad and disrespectful. First off they have added a great full bar and have added a bit more formality to their dinning experience. Cloth napkins and white table coverings. During the day it is a great place to get a sandwich or salad and either eat in or take away. In the winter I usually get a half sandwich and one of their daily soups. Just this past week I had dinner. I ordered the Fish Taco's with rice and beans. It was Amazing! The tacos had the right amount of fresh salsa and lettuce. The fish was also fresh. Just a great meal! They do offer full service catering and they are really able to deliver great meals for small to big events. I've been coming here for over 20 years. I noticed for some time, their portions have gotten smaller. Now, they are much smaller. The calamari appetizer is around 10 small pieces. We ordered their special heirloom tomato salad with sliced feta. The plate consisted of 3 tomato slices with a smidge of feta on each slice. $8 for this??!! This was not a salad. My friend ordered the flash fired sea scallops for $22. Well, turns out there was a misprint. It was not flash fired, but flash fried! The waitress didn't bother to tell us and there was no mention of a printing mistake on the menu. Not only were the scallops fried, they were also breaded. No mention on the menu either. I'm glad I didn't order it. How hard would have been to correct on the menus? Or, leave a note on every table that there is a misprint. My friend didn't make a stink about the fried breaded scallops, but I would have complained. That's completely misrepresenting the dish. I won't be going back. read more

Went down here for dinner last night. Real nice atmosphere, dim lit and pretty quiet. Our waitress was fantastic, great suggestions and brought us a few wines to sample before we picked a bottle. First we got a scallop/potato cake with gran marnier sauce appetizer on the waitresses recommendation which was unreal. wicked good! Wine was great and the bottles were reasonably priced too! I dropped a star because my main dish wasn't spicy enough for my taste. To be fair the waitress warned me of that too. It was a cajun style duck/shrimp combo and she told me that people had said it lacked in spice. She recommended some other dishes but I stuck with my choice. Kind of dissapointing. For desert we had some fresh apple crisp which was again fantastic. Warm with vanilla ice cream. Usually the kind of deli or sandwich shop where you order your lunch at the counter has no real place to sit and enjoy that meal on the premises. Via Lago has a really nice dining area with just enough service (they bring your order to your table when you opt to eat in, and clear your plate when you're done) to make you feel like you're at a restaurant, while maintaining the casual feeling. Delicious food, generous portions of ingredients, and a nice range of sandwiches, soups, and salads. Their desserts are mostly cookies and squares (e.g. brownies); my only suggestion for improvement would be to offer some different dessert choices like cheesecake or tira mi su to be enjoyed with the coffee/tea after the meal. read more

You walk in, and you're impressed by the decor and ambiance. Not bad for your neighborhood hole-in-the-wall. You look at the menu, and surprised that it's mostly sandwiches and a few pastas. Here's the problem: it's a lunch-oriented sandwich and soup place that's trying very hard to be a nice sit-down dinner place. My wife and I had a very pleasant breakfast experience here on a quiet Saturday morning. I don't recall there being more than a handful of items on the breakfast menu, but the quality and portions were very satisfying. My wife enjoyed a huge portion of french toast. I ordered the standard egg/meat/potato/toast. The hash brown was a patty straight off the cisco truck, but the sausage and english muffin were obviously not and scrumptious! We'd give them 10 stars if I could. We used Via Lago to cater a somber event last weekend. Marcia was incredibly helpful in planning, coordinating, and helping out. The servers Lenny and Darlene were attentive, compassionate, and didn't stop moving to take care of our guests and make sure everything was cleared and refilled and looking nice. All of the food we just right - sandwich spirals were delicious, brie bites were just perfect. Everyone loved the caprese skewers, as well as the chocolate pastries, and the white chocolate filled pastries. It was kind of amazing how many people commented on what a fantastic job the caterer did. Thanks Via Lago for helping so much on a very tough day. Friendly service. Perfect place to catch up with hubby on Friday nights after a busy week at work. The place is small, but we have always found that they fit us in, weather it is a table or at the bar (sports game on TV).. This place is also kids friendly. I've started going for an egg-and-cheese-on-a-bagel sandwich for breakfast regularly. You can actually say how many eggs and how you'd like them cooked (e.g. scrambled or fried). I also like whatever brand of bagels they carry, and Harney & Sons decaf ceylon is a new favorite decaf black tea. It's probably safer for me to go there for breakfast - it's easier to ignore the tempting goodies of the bakery case at 7:30 than at lunch :) read more

This place has really changed since the last time I came - it's got a great set up now with a bar (I saw wine, but did not see any liquors, so I'm guessing they don't have a full license) and a lot of tables. The lunch crowd was bustling, and the line didn't take too long. The food was delivered to our table. I don't think I'm yet in a position to rave about the food - I had the hummus wrap and it was fine, but I think a "hummus and veggie" wrap should maybe have some more flavor than just hummus, tomatoes and lettuce. There were some carrot shavings too. But, those are sort of a given with any sandwich. But what about like, grilled eggplant or some sort of garlic bread crumb zucchini. And the chocolate chip cookie was sort of disappointing - like a bread cookie. However, I like the cafe style, and I like what's on the menu. Excellent, elegant, innovative comfort food. I had a hard time deciding what to pick on the fall menu. Spaghetti squash tartlet with duck and portobello was a very good (but not mind-blowing) appetizer. Delicatto squash risotto with roast chicken was fantastic, and the skin on the chicken was crispy as bacon. Next night, curried apple pumpkin bisque was delicious; lemon herb pan-seared mussels cooked perfectly with a subtle side of spaghetti squash regiano, but the garlicked spinach was a bit heavy-handed on the oil and salt. The atmosphere is charming and cozy and the two bartenders friendly and attentive. My food took about 40 minutes to come out the first night, and the (owner? manager?) came out to apologize because the first tartlet got overcooked, so they had to start over & comped me the tartlet, so that was nice. Everything was prompt the second night, but I switched from beer to cocktails and the cocktail recipes, while tasty, were a bit heavy on the mixers, making the core bourbon almost disappear. Still, I will miss this place & definitely make it my regular joint on work trips here. read more

The new decor is pretty ancient, so I'm confused. They added a bar which is a nice bar. The best new thing is the least expensive breakfast in the boston area. 1 egg, bacon, toast, & coffee for about $5.00. It is especially nice if you sit in the window and watch Lexington (the most boring town on the east coast) wake up. Dinner is very civil and nicely priced. (A great change from Average Joe's down the street) The servings are normal size, big enough, but don't go to Via Lago if your idea of a good meal is the local Chinese mega buffet. The food is heatlhy sort of food. It is quiet so you can talk. Also, if you need a good date place they tend to go more lightly on garlic than many nearby restaurants. read more

Let me start off, the decor and ambiance is really good. A lot of fun, in such a old historic town. I think they are going for a classy deli. Cause the menu isn't your typical deli, but not your typical restaurant either. I chose to have a sandwich cause the non-sandwich items were way to pricey. The sandwiches were on the pricey side as well. The customer service was horrible. I found them rude, and very slow. This needs to change.
