Stumbled upon this place when uptown checking out galleries. 2 things to note right off the bat: no bathroom and cash only. The bathroom thing kinda odd but not an issue, waiter tells us, "don't worry, we'll get your food out in 5 mins and you can go to the Pierre Hotel down the street, they have a bathroom" which is EXACTLY what happened, LOL. Total old-school diner, tiny place, barely seats 20, but nearly full at 2pm on a weekday. We were the youngest people in there by a mile. Found this gem over 15 years ago. Talk about it with friends to this day. At that time, we wanted a sandwich to take on the train back home. We heard their turkey sandwiches were wonderful. So, we went to the restaurant and left 45 minutes leeway to order our food to make sure we'd have enough time to catch your train. No sooner we ordered our sandwiches they were ready! Not only were they ready, they were huge and delicious. We retell this story all the time. Well, on our recent trip to New York City, we were on Madison Avenue and guess what? We found it again! Same delightful tiny, little place. Food is delicious. Ordered chicken soup for each of us and told them we would split the egg salad sandwich. They split the sandwich on separate and plates for us and even gave both of us coleslaw and a pickle. What more can you ask for? A true delight! Needed a quick and hearty breakfast while in the city and this place has been open a very long time, so had to try it. I had the Pancakes with bananas and they were great and easily filled me up for the morning which was needed for a long day ahead. Would come back again if nearby. read more

Old school diner in Midtown. Came here with my friend after landing from my redeye because I really needed a bagel and this was a close spot to his office. There booth seating available for two as well as bar seating. Cash only. I had a bit of sticker shock when I saw that the bagel with lox and cream cheese was $18 but I guess that's New York pricing. It came cut into four pieces and there was a generous amount of cream cheese. My friend got the French toast, which came with a lot of butter on the side. I try and be kind on these reviews, but I'm a New York City boy born and raised. This is the most overpriced greasy spoon diner. I've ever stepped foot in two eggs sausage coffee English muffin over $21 and that's without tip. I left five. Service was nice and fast. Wait staff was friendly and food was fine. But they don't have a bathroom! A sit down restaurant without a bathroom! They said we could go to the hotel across the street. That that's where they send all their customers. That begs the question, where do their staff wash their hands???? Customer Service: Could be better. Be careful of what you say around customers. You have no clue of knowing whether your customers know Spanish and if they can tell if you are speaking down on them. Great little local breakfast place off Madison Ave. All of our food was fresh and fast. The restaurant doesn't have a restroom and there are only two tops and a long bar area. We sat at the bar and was literally in and out in less than 30 minutes. I'd come back for sure! read more

Probably one of the best delis without a restroom in all of NYC. It's a narrow corridor with tiny chairs and tables to one side and the long counter with stool seating on the other. There are hooks for your belongings under the bar which is great for smaller items like shopping bags and purses. It's best to stow your jackets on your seat or if business is slow, the stool next to you is ideal. Across the counter is the kitchen area. Everything is clean and fresh. We saw roasted turkeys and just out of the oven rice pudding. Mmmmm! We asked the manager what this deli is known for, and low and behold it is turkey! And they're right. Everyone around us got a turkey dish of some kind. I had a turkey melt and my mum had a turkey sandwich. Both were delicious. They modify it to your needs/liking. The kitchen staff are friendly and will take your order if the manager is too busy with other customers. We had coffees. I drank mine black. It was too good to add milk to it, even if it was half n' half. And we splurged with dessert of the lightly cinnamon covered rice pudding in front of us. What a great local stop. They remind me of a Waffle House. Great food. It was so good. I would pick this stop over any place in Times Square. It was a super small and had a great local feel. The booths were for 2 people max and the was a counter. The food was amazing. AMAZING! We had the bacon cheeseburger with fries. We ordered potato salad as well. Really small old fashioned diner. The path between the booths and counter is narrow. I was bumped throughout my meal. The manager doesn't help because he passed back and forth barking orders to his help. I saw customers walk in and then turn around and leave. Some customers the manager/owner knew. One customer asked to use the restroom. Manger said its across the street in Barney's!! They have a lot of delivery and take out. It was overpriced. Food was the way I like it though. This is a very small, compact diner - but if you're in this neighborhood and looking for a great diner breakfast, check it out. There's a row of narrow booths that seat 2, and then the counter. I recommend the sardine platter - exactly as described. Omelettes are good, too, quite large. Coffee is excellent for a diner. Yes, it's probably the most expensive diner breakfast I've ever purchased, but do you know what neighborhood you're in? Still, a better deal than eating, say, in your hotel's restaurant. Lots of local people seem to like the place. My experience was that the service was highly expeditious. Waiter was attentive throughout the meal. Note that they only take cash. read more

Went in for breakfast. Ordered four eggs scrambled, turkey sausage & whole wheat toast. Nothing else -- no coffee, no potatoes, no nothing else. The sausage never showed up, but the check did, with the sausage still on it -- $19.55. I told the waiter I never received the sausage, the check needed to be adjusted. Revised check -- $18.55, for four scrambled eggs, two pieces of toast and a glass of ice water. Total ripoff. Don't go there. read more

They say this is a coffee shop but it looks like a small little diner. They have a few places named Viand cafe so I am not sure if they are all connected. These types of places are fun and becoming increasingly rare in Manhattan. They have a bunch of pastries in the front that all look delicious. I don't think they make them on premises though. Good spot if you are looking for comfort food. I always stick to eggs or turkey club sandwiches at these types of spots. Pleasantly surprised by my cheeseburger and fries. Only ordered because of the 5 bucks off on Grubhub. The food came FAST (I live a few blocks from Viand but still) and it was hot when it arrived. It was LARGE too! I did not finish. Ate half for lunch and half at 11PM. Good fries. Old-fashioned, smaller than steak fries but not that shoestring type where you can't tell you're eating a potato. Cheaper than Burger Heaven, which is wildly overpriced. The cheeseburger platter (with fries, cole slaw) is 15 and it's a much bigger burger. Medium rare, as requested. They forgot the onions but otherwise terrific. At 10 bucks this was a real bargain and the deal wasn't just for first time order, so I will definitely check to see if they are doing this 5 off again. read more
