Bread Story is decorated with all kinds of pink goodies for Valentine's Day. Despite the frigid weather there were plenty of customers eating inside or buying pastries and sandwiches. I had gone in for two small Viennoise that I am fond of. I did see pink heart shaped macarons and heart shaped croissants best eaten quickly before they deflate. Came here strictly for the mini jambon beurre because I was craving one and I'll definitely be back for more. The bakery was loaded with baked goods - from fresh bread to a multitude of sweet treats. I only got the jambon beurre which had a deliciously crispy baguette - my standard for an excellent bakery. As a croissant connoisseur + lover, this place was def a shocking miss.. The small, neighborhood bakery was nearby and knew i had to try it out, especially when I heard their pain au chocolat had dark chocolate bars. Although it was around late afternoon, they were kinda still stocked and had plenty of loafs and breads to offer. The croissant itself was missing a ton a flavor and mainly the buttery texture and layers. The dark chocolate wouldn've been a hit but the lack of flavor ruined it. This is a good neighborhood spot. The jambon beurre was on the small side (which I liked) and was good, but i probably wouldn't get it again. The bread was soft on the inside, but the outside was tough and made chewing kind of a chore. The ham-Gruyère-butter combo was tasty enough, but the flavors didn't totally pop. I liked the chocolate almond croissant a lot, though I wish it had a little more of the rich, decadent chocolate filling! There seemed to be more almond filling. The croissant crust was flaky, with crunchy almonds and sugar sprinkled on top. I would get this again. The cold brew was nice and strong. read more

Upon entering there are a variety of pastries on display, priced between $3-$5, which is fair. Their coffee beverages were also pretty fairly priced. I got a cold brew for $3.50 which I think is worth compared to the prices of coffee at other places. The chocolate brioche pastry I got was good, but really just bread and chocolate chips. A great spot for pastries and baked goodies, once I walked in, I was greeted with the lovely sweet smell of baked breads and buttery croissants. The inside is a bit small with a few tables with high chairs, but it's mostly a grab and go spot. Going into the shop around 10am, the shop was filled with all kinds of breads, cookies, croissants, tarts, macarons, and sandwiches. The assortment is amazing! I got a white chocolate brioche and the first bite was simply delicious- it was sweet and I loved how soft and airy the bread is. Bread Story is one of my favorite bakeries in New York City. I have been going there for years, and the quality is excellent, the pastry and bread selection is awesome, and there's a consistency which makes it a go-to spot for me. It's located on the boundary of Stuyvesant Town, and it feels like a true neighborhood bakery. It's not overrun by tourists, it has never had social media-driven surges of popularity, and it doesn't have many customers making a pilgrimage from other neighborhoods- but it should. It deserves it, it is such a high-quality bakery that New York is lucky to have. The croissants are some of the best I've had anywhere in the US. They're wonderfully flaky, the butter's high quality is immediately evident,and quite simply it's delicious. Their breads are also fantastic- one of my favorites is the olive bread. They have a wide selection of French pastries and breads, and trust me when you visit you'll want to try out more than a few. Next time you're near Gramercy, Union Square, Murray Hill, or the East Village, take a small detour and swing by Bread Story. I guarantee you'll not only be charmed by its neighborhood feel, but you'll love the food and you'll have a sense of contentment that you've discovered a true hidden gem in Manhattan, which is not easy to do anymore. read more

Bread Story is a great addition to the East Village/Stuytown area. It's a solid boulangerie and on my visit, I snagged some cereal bread, a croque monsieur, and a plain croissant. They offered to slice the loaf, but I opted to keep the solid loaf to slice at home. The cereal bread had a great crust and soft chewy interior with loads of seeds. The croque monsieur was good for the price, but not exceptional. The croissant had a nice flakey crust and soft and buttery interior. Very solid croissant. The staff is super friendly and there was a nice flow of customers coming in and out of the shoppe without creating a long queue. There are two display counters and the farther counter has macarons and small baguette sandwiches that I initially missed. I'd definitely come back to try their award winning baguette. read more

Was working nearby on this day and wanted a cup of coffee. It's hard for me to walk past any bread shops!!! There's a Duncan next door but I'd rather not if there's anywhere else near by - chocolate almost croissant was total heaven. Crunchy almond slivers and the right amount of chocolate. I was getting light headed when I was eating it. Just perfection. Then of course I broke into my raisin walnut loaf. Omg pure heaven. So crunchy. It's not an enormous loaf which is a good thing. Stopped by Bread Story on opening day since I've been eagerly waiting for a good bakery to open in the neighborhood. It was well worth the wait! You can smell the freshly baked baguettes as you walk down first ave. This classic French bakery offers a variety of breads, pastries, and coffee/espresso drinks. I picked up a mini baguette and a almond/chocolate croissant. The baguette was a perfect size for a morning snack and the best I've had in the city. I've never seen a croissant filled with both almond and chocolate, making it extra decadent. It's so good my child closes her eyes and just enjoy the overall flavor of it all. I have to break it in half and she opens it up eats the almond inside and than eats the other parts. I came here a few months ago; let's just say all my kids are hooked. They love all their baked goods. We even had an almond croissant fresh out the oven and that was mind blowing. Went here cause my brother mentioned about an egg yolk bread but turns out he mistaken the apricots halves as egg yolks. Anyways we bought that and a mini walnut bread to try out - average taste. It was more like bread than the typical crust for tarts. The walnut bread got the healthy whole grain taste. A small decent selection of bread and pastries inside. When this charming little pastry shop popped up along my route on 1st avenue, I excitedly assumed it was a Korean bakery, remembering all the various Korean restaurants and bakeries that have "story" in their business name, including "Gopchang Story" which oddly translates to story of the intestines, I think. This digression is all to say that I've never been more excited to be wrong about a bakery when I learned this was actually the brainchild of a former head baker at Maison Kayser, one of the only bakery chains I adored. Doubly excited since the chain suffered closures during the pandemic, so it's like their pastries could have a second life via Bread Story. Staring at their pastry case you'll notice powdered sugar dusted almond croissants, gleaming apple tarts, pain au chocolat, croissants, and lots of baguettes lining the walls. You can't go wrong with any of them, but I often reach for a pain au raisin. Paired with one of their cold brews or chai lattes and you really can't have a bad day. As I write this I'm planning another visit to try their other pastries to set me up for a delicious breakfast. read more
