The coffee tastes great! At some point it was starting to taste bitter, but now the coffee tastes perfect again. These guys are on top of their game when it comes to coffee and keeping their customers happy! They also have a great selection of delicious pastries and sandwiches, including options for gluten free, vegans and vegetarians. Not very common to find a coffee shop catering to everyone, this just shows they really care :) The ambiance is awesome as well. It can get pretty busy at times, but there is always space available if you have a small group or by yourself. Free stable and fast wifi available too, huge plus for me as I usually do some work while sipping on my coffee and eating yummy goodies. read more

The barista was not that knowledgeable about different forms of making coffee, something I assumed they would understand giving how many options of making coffee they offer. The coffee both my girlfriend and I ordered were sour and bitter. Both basically were black coffee , mine iced and hers being a shot in the dark. I don't think they were worth $2 let alone the $8 we payed for them combined. I will not return. I used Starbucks as my comparison for coffee because Starbucks is barely 2 stars quality. So far no place in Seattle has been better than Starbucks which is sad for a city known for coffee. read more

I like this place for the atmosphere and that they offer beer. I got their drip coffee this morning and it was terrible... It was watery and so burnt tasting I tossed it after one sip. I drink it black. It was also annoyingly hot. Maybe the brew temp's too high and the amount/grind was off but I won't be attempting it again. read more

I give them one star because they continue to allow dogs in the shop. I had an issue, and a chat, with one of the managers about this a few months ago. I asked them to put up a sign to discourage people from bringing dogs in. I continue to see dogs in the shop (I walk by regularly), I see no sign informing people it's against the health code, and I see at least one other one star review here on yelp about dogs in the shop. Ballard Coffee Works needs to stop using this health code violation as a competitive advantage. They need to put up a "service animals only" sign just like all the other coffee shops in Ballard. I do have to admit, I like the coffee, but I won't buy from them as long as they let people bring in pets. read more

The toddies are utterly addictive for (what we get of) summer, and I love what they've done with the place -- not that the Tully's was such an eyesore, but it just seems to flow better now. The service has been friendly and efficient, and though it's a very small thing I appreciate that the baristas don't seem to be mystified by the items in the pastry case and can identify them on sight. (No names, but certain other local businesses should take notes.) Great to have a genuinely knowledgeable coffee place in Ballard again! read more

I'm not sure why I hadn't tried BCW until I did but I really like it. The time of night I enjoyed my drink was around 7pm and it was pretty chill inside and struck me as a relaxing place to read or people watch out the windows. The baristas wasn't super engaging but he took my order and made my drink properly and did it quickly so I was happy. I order a soy mocha extra hot with an extra shot of espresso and he made my drink perfectly. I sat by a window and watched people scurry about in the rain and enjoyed my drink before wandering around Ballard some more. When I first noticed BCW directly across the street from the Starbucks I was a little surprised but after having tasted their beverages I'll definitely walk across the street to get coffee here opposed to Starbucks; I can get mediocre corporate coffee anywhere and at any time. Besides... Ballard Coffee Works is super close to Cupcake Royale, Full Tilt Ice Cream and a whole bunch of other awesome places to go for food and snacks. I'm a fan! read more

I'm going to give this place 5 stars for service - always very friendly and inviting. They make you feel like a part of the neighborhood. I do wish there would be more comfy seating areas though, as sometimes I'll end up picking the place across the street if I feel like spending a long time just chillin. This is one of my favorite coffee shops. The coffee are consistently great, no matter who is on. I like their house blend espresso, it's a little lighter than your typical espresso roast. Their take home packs of beans are always fresh as well. A little expensive but worth it. read more

I have been to this coffee shop multiple times since they opened and can say that I have consistently had amazing cups of coffee. It is possibly the best coffee I have ever had. Drinking an 8 oz latte with two shots without any flavoring or sugar would seem impossible at any other shop, but here the coffee is so smooth and flavorful. I am also the mother of a young kid and want to give a shout out for having a kids area! They let parents with toddlers hang out in the private room in the mornings so the kids can be corralled while we drink our delicious coffee. No other coffee place in Ballard has a designated kid-friendly space as good as theirs. It will definitely be my first place for any coffee dates in the neighborhood. read more

I definitely have a crush on Ballard Coffee Works. I've got deep-seated coffee needs and these folks always have at least four coffee varieties for me to choose from. I've had a pretty spectacular panini and several marvelous cookies to go along with my cuppa in the past, and they've got a couple of taps from local breweries for those times when coffee just won't do it. This is a wonderful coffeeshop.. Sorry for the guy who had the bad experience.. I found most of the staff very friendly, despite being overworked during the peak hours.. This is without a doubt one of the busiest coffeeshops in all of Seattle. There is a reason for this! I will also vouch to the kindness of the staff. One day I forgot to get cash at the ATM and the barista was very polite and friendly and didn't mind me paying my $3 bill with a credit card, which probably forced them to lose most of their profits on my sale, since CC companies charge like $1-3 per transaction. Oh yes.. If you want amazing coffee, look no further! Ballard and Seattle Coffee Works both have some of the best coffee in the Pacific Northwest. Everything they serve in their dispensers has been French Pressed and has a very rich, sweet and smooth flavor. I notice French Pressed coffee done right, such as how Seattle/Ballard Coffee Works, Cafe Vita and others do results in some of best flavored coffee you can get. Did someone say this coffee is bitter????? I have yet to ever have bitter coffee at Ballard/Seattle Coffee Works.. But, every place can have a bad day or bad cup I suppose? Now, I have been to several other places that have produced very bitter coffee, Ballard Coffee Works is not one of them! The prices are reasonable for the coffee as well. You just simply cannot go to a very crowded coffeeshop like this and expect finding the best seat or having a barista wait on you for 5 minutes to be practical. However, when they are less busy, they are some of friendliest baristas I have met in Seattle. The downtown location baristas are also very accommodating and friendly. Also, I have yet to have trouble with anybody being willing to share a table with me during the busy hours if nothing is available. Seattlites need to stop being such introverts and reach out and touch someone. People in Seattle I have learned, despite being shy are very friendly and accommodating. This shows very much at Ballard Coffee Works... If you want to experience a "TRUE" Seattle coffee experience, go to Ballard or Seattle Coffee Works! Ok, I'm one of those guys who takes his art work to a coffee shop and sits there all night till I finish off a couple of images. So I'm hogging a lot of space but in the evenings at most coffee shops there is a lot of room to do this sort of thing. Most places don't have great lighting so It's hard to work on anything unless I'm using the computer. That aside, I can only tolerate great coffee. Like Zokas, this place has great coffee but unlike Zokas, this place has great food!!! I know they told me that they get their sandwiches and other items from a shop in Pike Market but since I'm really bad at remembering names, you'll have to take my word for it. Terrific sandwiches! They look so tasty in the case. Something I've never thought when looking at the sandwiches at Zokas. The staff is polite if somewhat above everyone, which I'm not happy about. But they leave you alone if you are there to work. There are a few tables that have great lighting and others where it is dim, so the lighting varies. The tables and chairs are comfortable and roomy, unlike those at the Cupcake Royale, down the street. Now that I'm close to the end of my review I can say that I just love this place. It's on the corner of a busy intersection in Ballard so there is plenty to look at while staring out the windows,... just in case you didn't bring anything to read or work on. The downside, if there really is one, which there isn't, is that the new Bauhaus down the street looks just as inviting. But the only thing I can see that this place totally has over BH, besides the great coffee and food,... location, location, location! read more

BCW perfect in so many ways! Coffee: I usually choose to drink single origin espresso (or as they call it single-o) and sometimes I like it straight espresso, sometimes they'd suggest it to make it italiano or macchiatto if it's not good for espresso. They'll be always honest about their coffee and very serious about it. If you don't like the coffee, they are happy to make it again the way you like. Baristas.. Well BCW team is just one the most amazing people I've met in Seattle. Contrary to Seattle vibe, they are very open friendly and always happy to chat (unless they are super busy assisting customers). I always come to BCW for great start of the day, to get my coffee and barista's smile. Actually, they were the first friends I made in Ballard right after I moved here 4 months ago. Space! When you get into coffee shop you don't really get immediately how well thought through space is and how much attention was paid to make it so comfortable. You won't notice, because it's not screaming about it, it's just great. There's space to sit with a book near the window. There's space to chat with a friend. There's space to read newspapers. There's space to sit with your laptop (benches are specially heightened for comfort). They have room for meetings and kids playground. Beautifully designed functional space. I'm not sure that coffee shop can get any better that this. read more

We decided to try this place after hearing about how delicious their coffee was. We walked in and noticed about 3 different owners with their dogs lounging under or near their tables. The day was kind of windy and cold and those dogs SMELLED! I did not know they allowed animals in an establishment that served food. AND I am sure the workers did not ask for proof that the dogs were service dogs. Too bad for this place as we left without spending a dime. read more

Besides the really bad idea of having a large kids area in the coffee shop, by itself a major deterrent to anyone wanting to read, work or relax there, what bothers me most is the fact that in a day and age when pesticide-free and slave-labor free coffee is so readily available (and tasty), the coffee here is not organic nor fair-trade. The "Northwest authenticity" of the ambience is fake and only skin deep when the community's values of health, and social and economic justice, are blatantly ignored. Roasting your non-organic, slave-labor-produced coffee in your shop does not cover it. It only shows an attempt to use a popular meme to pretend to be what you are not. read more

ZOMG best toddy evar! If I'm on Market Street and need some coffee I come to Ballard Coffee Works. Their coffee is excellent and I especially love their toddy in the summer. They've also got NW Peaks beer on tap and cans from Fremont Brewery. It's a great place to hang out and get some work done, or to recharge when you're out and about shopping in Ballard. read more

I visited this coffee shop as soon as they opened on Monday morning. I really needed my fix of caffeine that morning. I sure got what I was looking for. Cup of latte not only was full of flavorful coffee, but it was well presented too with fancy leaf. I value places like this where coffee is served with presentation, unlike in StarSucks (McDonald of coffee industry). Place also has a Wi-Fi, which was useful for me to do some work. I chatted with the owner, Sebastian. He is a very pleasant guy who cares about business and clients. They also have a good selection of sandwiches and pastries (bad for your love handles but very yummy). I highly recommend this joint. read more

The coffee was good, the atmosphere vibrant (not too many laptops on tables). BUT, there were three or four fruit flies buzzing around INSIDE the pastry case this afternoon. The little guys had the run of the place, landing on one delicious-looking pastry after another with impunity. We pointed this out, but the employees behind the counter did little more than wave a tongs around inside to try to shoo them off (with little effect). The pastries were still for sale, for the next unsuspecting customers, when we left with our (well-crafted) coffees. read more

There was a huge fly in the fresh food case, trapped inside and flying around the sandwiches. The coffee carafes are really dirty, they need to be cleaned. Every time I come here I get coffee with floaters from old / improperly cleaned carafes. Today, when my boyfriend brought a cup back because there was nothing but scum on top, the lady behind the counter was rude and tried to play it off as oils and pieces of the filter. I've worked in the industry and know when a carafe needs to be replaced, I bet you it's black on the inside. Props to the dude who offered us an Americano. I am so disappointed. I love to shop local and support our third wave coffee houses but when I asked for an 8 oz. toddy coffee I got a NO GO! It was crazy! They would pour me an 8 oz but would charge the 16 oz price.. POS system wouldn't allow it - no blame to the barista. Instead the owner? manager? (German accent?) said they wouldn't make an exception because if they special ordered every customer they'd piss off customers waiting in line. Wow! Really? Well you just lost a Ballard Centric daily coffee buying customer for $1.30. I don't know about you but if a customer who was excited about a toddy coffee, in the late afternoon didn't want the extreme caffeine, I'd poor an 8 oz on the house and look forward to a happy customer's return. You might want to re-think your relationship to the machine. Are you serving your POS, or paying customers? I'll spend my money where they empower barista's to make friendly customer service based decisions and have a management that know where their paycheck comes from. Ugh! read more

Came here to study/to work. Not bad ambiance, and decent staff. Don't get me wrong- this place is decent, but not 5 star or 4 star for that matter. I don't think they need to change much, its just not a good fit for me. Issues 1) Internet way way way too slow. This is a deal breaker, this is a tech city, so expect a certain standard, but very poor, even just for web browsing speeds were slow. Its understandable when the place is packed (people using bandwidth, etc) but it was half empty. Location just needs to invest in better internet speeds. 2) Coffee- this is also a coffee city, and the coffee was just average, I have had a lot better, and worse, but for a place that is a 'coffee' shop coffee should be better. All in all not a bad place, but I would go to Bauhaus before I go here. read more
