The best bakery in Rhode Island. They have won "the best of" award, and it is well deserved. Joe Balasco is one of the best bakers in the land. I ordered a chocolate mousse cake for my daughter's birthday, and it is the best cake I have eaten in my entire life. My company used to order from Vienna's quite a bit. When I took over the position and now needed dessert for an event I used the employees recommendation and ordered an enormous order for an event at my company back in the summer. Although I confirmed the date with them multiple times, and even had to call back to add to the order using the date of the event, when we arrived on the day to pick it up they did not have it ready as they said they had the wrong date. Luckily we had a couple hours and they hurried to make it. I just had another event and I figured I would give them another chance. I called to place another enormous order and spoke on the phone to someone who wasn't very nice and then when i told them my date they very rudely that they were not open Mondays, which I did not realize. They again very rudely said i could either pick up the entire, mostly refrigerated, order on Sunday or not order at all. Since it was a huge order it would have to be refrigerated at work which was not possible on a Sunday so i could not order. While I understand the not being open on Monday was not their fault the being rude multiple times certainly was. I will not be ordering from them again. Two strikes and you're out as far as I'm concerned. I will take my $800 orders elsewhere. We ended up using Scialo Bakery on Federal Hill and they were wonderful! Everyone asked where we got our real pastries from this time as they were delicious. read more

Great local bakery always Fresh and top notch. The Zepoles are the Best Anywhere. Try their calzones they are terrific and are a nice lunch meal. Been going here for over 50 years and never been disappointed. Try this great family friendly business and you will see what I mean. read more

This place is awesome! Any time I bring their bakery pizza to a party, people go crazy for it and ask where I got it from. Same with their cakes; the whipped cream frosting is amazing. I have been getting my daughter's birthday cakes here for years. I now live in Somerset so it's not right around the corner anymore, but it's well worth the drive! read more

I was really excited about this bakery when I saw their extensive and rather inexpensive menu online, but when I got there I was kind of disappointed. The pastries were just not of the quality that I expected...its the type of quality I would expect from a grocery store bakery section. Their pistachio canoli was awesome though, and while I didn't try the cakes, they looked pretty good. The bread was just plain white bread that you can get at Stop and Shop. So it wasn't terrible, but kind of old school (not in a good way) and conventional. read more

This bakery has earned a lifelong customer. I got an Italian Rum Cake for a co workers birthday. This cake 4 layers and had a different flavor for everyone. The ribbon tied around was a beautiful touch. The office was raving for the rest of the day of how good it was. It was light, fluffy and very moist. I absolutely will be returning here in the future for other birthdays, parties and just a general bakery trip. I also got a loaf of their Italian bread. I just discovered this place and haven't had a chance to try their breads yet, but the pastries are outstanding and reasonable priced. I have heard that their calzones are also quite good. In the age of mediocre chain bakeries and grocery store junk food, it is always good to have a real neighborhood bakery. read more

Like Alastair, I'm surprised by the other reviews. I've purchased only 3 items here, and none of them was particularly good. They weren't bad either, they were just average in quality and taste. For example, the eclair I bought was average in every respect. The filling wasn't particularly creamy or tasty, the chocolate frosting didn't taste like quality frosting, and the puff pastry was kind of hard. I had this place described to me as a superb bakery, the best in the area, but I don't see it. Having sampled only 3 items, it would be unfair of me to give them a low rating, so I am giving them 3 stars. I'll go back and try a few more items. I'm entering old age, and one of the things I've come to realize is that there are a lot of Americans who have never tasted really good food. Maybe that is why some people are giving this place an excellent review -- they just don't know any better. read more

Rude staff and terrible pastries. Picked up a chocolate mousse cake and a tiramisu. Chocolate mousse cake was dry and, frankly stale. The tiramisu rivaled the quality of a dessert you'd get at Olive Garden--if you actually dined there. For the price I paid I will NEVER go back. 0 stars. read more

Vienna bakery has always been my go to spot for bread, pizza, and pastries - probably for the past 20 years. The service has been on the decline in the past few years or so, and after going there this afternoon and being treated like an annoyance, I will not be back. I stopped in today at 4:00, the hours on the door showed closing time was 5. I had plenty of time. I was the only customer in the place, and there were three employees behind the counter. One was cleaning, another was incessantly checking her watch, and third, making it his job to ignore me. I said hello to all of them, only got a response from the watch checker. She then went in the back. I asked the male employee if I could have two brownies and a small Easter egg cake. He asked three times for a description of the cake. There were two of them in the case and I was pointing. He put the three items in a box that was too big, but still stacked the frosted brownies on top of each other so the frosting peeled off the one on the bottom and stuck to the paper of the other brownie. He took my payment, leaving the box open in front of me, handed my card back to me and said thank you. I asked if I could use a piece of tape to close the box since it was obvious he wasn't going to do it for me, and he rolled his eyes and said "oh, you want me to close it?" So I asked again if I could use a piece of tape and I could close it myself, since they were obviously too busy to wait on me, and he still made no move to help. So I took the open box of items that can't be used anyway since they are sticking together in the box. A customer who goes into an establishment five minutes after they open or five minutes before they close should be treated the same. It was apparent that they couldn't be bothered since they were going to be leaving in an hour. I will be sure to spread the word that there are far better bakeries with far better service. read more

We have been there...A LOT for little after school treats, although we only go when we have cash on hand, as they charge you for using your debit under $10. Overall the pastries are pretty good, some downright awesome..then there are a few that weren't so good (like the napoleon, which is my FAVORITE dessert, so that was a bummer). Good cakes. Wonderful traditional bakery. Great cakes and breads.

I had to visit several physician's offices in Barrington recently for work, and I was looking for something to grab for breakfast that was quick and easy but not fast food (i.e. Dunkin' Donuts). I noticed Vienna Bakery on my way to the first office, so I stopped in afterwards to see if they had some sort of quiche or other savory pastry. Lo and behold, the "spinach pie", a warm round of soft, pillowy dough stuffed with spinach cooked with or without "meat" - some form of spicy hard sausage. Pepperoni, linguica, chorizo? Whatever it was, it was delicious, perfectly seasoned, and definitely not soggy or mushy. Good dough to filling ratio. The dough itself would make me go back and buy some of their breads, if I lived in the state. You can tell they use fresh spinach, not canned or frozen. Popeye would go nuts. I think even people who don't like spinach would enjoy this. The cakes looked delicious, and since I knew I might not be back, I decided to get a slice to save for later. I had my eye on a chocolate mousse tart, but I knew that wouldn't last in the car while I made my stops. I didn't see any signs, so I picked out one that looked good and said, "I'll take a slice of whatever that is." I was informed I had chosen the "Almond Joy" cake. Unfortunately, I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had not been told the name, because I was expecting coconut cake with almond, and it turned out to be almond cake with coconut. I like almond, but I love coconut, so I ended up being disappointed. It was very tasty, nonetheless, setting aside the disappointment of it not being coconut. It was moist and flavorful, with a creamy, not overly sweet filling, with little chocolate bits in the cake and a chocolate ganache on top. Again, delicious, just not what I was expecting. The staff was very friendly and didn't seem to mind my loitering around for about 10 minutes staring at everything before I decided what I wanted. They offered their assistance but didn't put any pressure on me. When I paid for my spinach pie and my cake slice, it came up to $8, which is on par with the bakeries near me. However, when I went to dig into my cake after lunch, I found not one, but two slice of cake! So, I'm not sure if they thought I wanted two, and their cakes are just exceptionally well-priced, or they were just extra generous because they knew I was from out of state and might not ever get to try them again. Either way, I'm glad I left a tip. If I do find myself out that way again, I will definitely be stopping by there. read more

This was my first time visiting there and I was impressed with their vast selection of sweets. I really only came in there to purchase some cupcakes and they looked good but rather small not like the typical gourmet cupcakes I am used to. When I got their they were busy and people kept coming in and out so I guess it's a popular place for people. Parking is a little of a mess kind of disorganized but I was able to snag a spot. When we got home with our cupcakes my husband says they are rather small and I was like that's all they had. We got to tasting them and I really wanted to like them but they were awful. The cake part tasted identical to Betty Crocker cake mix which I hate with a passion and the icing was pretty stale. I'm assuming they weren't fresh. We ended up throwing them all away. Eww worst cupcakes ever the Stop & Shop cupcakes taste way better and are cheaper. Oh well lessen learned I'm glad I didn't purchase a cake because they probably use the same type of batter. Maybe the other pastries taste better. read more

Visiting relatives in the area, we were intrigued by this little bakery on a side street on the way back to the airport. We stopped and were pleasantly surprised by the eclairs, which we enjoyed on the plane. They were larger than our local Italian bakery sells and much, much better!! I don't understand why some people give a mediocre rating to this establishment. If we have had more time/money, we would have brought the wonderful smelling bread back to Texas, as well. Also, if you can only eat sugar free items, try the Sugar free apple turnovers! They are sooooo flaky and good. read more

I think Vienna bakery is a great bakery ..I have been going there for years , i love their bread, fresh fruit tarts, and many of their pastries are amazing!! A lot of people on here are comparing them to places like Pastiche, Pastiche is an amazing upscale cake/pastry boutique of sorts. Vienna's claim to fame is being a small town bakery , serving families for years by a family who has lived in the community for years. You can walk into Vienna and the staff knows your name , your kid's names, and there is always a family story that surrounds a holiday goody from Vienna . Who doesn't love a slice of amazing bakery pizza, a crusty Italian loaf of bread, or a mouthwatering pastry!! You would miss out if you didn't stop in Vienna if you are in the neighborhood!! read more

I agree with the lower scores. Just average. The only item I have ever gone back for is the angel food cake with chocolate frosting, though today I went in and asked for it, the young girl behind the counter had a snotty attitude, she looked in the case, which I could see and said we don't have any, I asked if they could frost a cake in the back, which they have offered and done many times before and she said no without hesitation. Not sure if owners read these things or realize how much the people who represent their business can help with business or hurt it. We were planning on getting the cake and some lunch items but after the unprofessional and unwelcoming attitude of this girl we left without spending a dime and went to the Blue Kangaroo for sandwiches and sweets...very good. Also, Pastiche as mentioned in Providence is great as is New Boston Bakery in Fall River, excellent but is only open M-Fr. read more

Yes, this is a bakery with yummy treats. However, they are not a gourmet bakery. They use a lot of heavy cream and yet their treats are still not sweet enough, i.e., lacking in sugar and other gourmet elements. As they mention on their website, the recipes have been passed down from a grandmother from a long ago time, which is fine, but not ideal. You see, a hundred years ago, a grandmother had to make do with whatever ingredients were available on the farm, which usually meant lots of cream (direct from cows), but not a lot of sugar or any specialty ingredients, because specialized ingredients simply could not be accessed. So, yes, this bakery is fine, but it's name would be more accurate if it were called "Grandma's best make-do recipes" rather than Vienna Bakery, which conjures up inaccurate images of it as a gourmet, European bakery. Oh, and it wouldn't do the employees any harm to actually act as though the customers mattered a bit. read more
