While it appeared to be a slow leak, as the tire pressure was down from 36 psi to 28 psi. It was about 8:45 p.m. on a Friday night and remembered that there was an auto repair shop along Duke St., just past Picket St.. and immediatrely on the other side of the Shell Gasoline station on the corner. I drove over there, less than a half mile, but only the manager was available as the technicians had gone home. He advised that if it was a slow leak, then they would make sure I was the first customer to be attended to the next day. I drove my car home and it was only then down to 26 psi. I have my own electric air pressure device, so put it back up to 36 psi and kept my fingers crossed overnight. The next morning it was down to 25 psi so I drove it back to DUKE AUTO REPAIR & SERVICE mentioned above and at 5220 Duke St. True to his word, the manager, SIMON, was there and insured I was placed at the front of the line and had the tire inspected. He brought out a photo of a screw that somehow got wedged in the tread. I gave the go ahead and it was patched in 15 minutes. I found DUKE AUTO REPAIR & SERVICE to be very professional, focused and with a "can-do" atitude. While it was only the repair of a slow leak in my tire, with over 50 years of getting cars repairs not only in the US, the Asia as well, I can tell that these folks care about doing a job in a focused manner, and doing it right as one month later, the tire still holds at 36 psi. And these folks are easy to work with. As a lifetime federal investigator, it takes a lot to gain my trust and confidence, but the folks at DUKE AUTO REPAIR & SERVICE earned it in less than 30 minutes over all. I asked about the guarantee on it because AutoZone had lifetime warranty on their alternator. Riccardo told me their part will be 1 year or 1,000 miles which was good enough for me. On Monday, 4 days after getting my alternator changed, I drove to New Jersey. About 3.5 hours in, my car broke down on the New Jersey Turnpike. I needed 2 tow trucks, one to get off the turnpike and another to get to a repair shop. Thank god I found somewhere open on Labor day who took my car in and repaired it on Tuesday. Every test I had showed that the "new" alternator failed. I spent almost $600 at Briars service station getting my alternator replaced. I had to spend almost $900 to have it replaced in NJ again to make it back home. I took the alternator back to Briars and explained the situation. They had the part tested and said it passed the testing but either way, after a 3.5 hour drive, it failed and left me stranded 4 states over. The only way for me to get home was to have it replaced. I told them, I know you used a rebuilt alternator, that is what the NJ guy told me. Riccardo said "correct". I was told this was a NEW part, not a rebuilt part. I NEVER would have accepted that, I would have got a brand new part from AutoZone for the same price! I wish I never came here. I spent hours and days I cannot get back waiting for tow trucks and waiting for my car to repaired. Briars will not issue a refund. I am filing complaints with MVDB, Virginia Office of the AGs Division of Consumer Counsel, Fairfax County Consumer Affairs and my credit card company. Shame on you Stan and Riccardo. Response to Stan: I called for an estimate on Wednesday while I was standing in AutoZone. I did mention that I might bring my own alternator part from AutoZone but then I called back and said I would like to go ahead with the NEW part that you source which you said would be there on Thursday. All the prices were given to me by Riccardo on the phone. I took a note of it and agreed of the parts and labor for a new alternator. I had no other issues with my car apart from needing a new alternator. I had AutoZone check the battery which was fine, both before and after you installed the alternator. I was not told it was a remanufactured part at all. I was told it was NEW. Otherwise I would have got the new part from AutoZone who offered lifetime guarantee for the same price. I am not complaining about your pricing. I am complaining that I have paid for a remanufactured part and the same service within 4 days because your shop either didn't do a good job or used a bad part, leaving me stranded 4 states over! If I'm having trouble with some simple thing such as getting air in my tires at the proper pressure they're always helpful. Prices are fair. ALI FIXED IT! A few spacers, fixed the camber and did an alignment. Ali was telling me he went to school at the Hunter alignment manufacturer, pretty much the best laser alignment machine out there. All this and he actually listens to what the problem is and gets it instantly. RARE around here. He had it done on time, perfect communication. I met 2 customers at the shop and both said the same thing about Ali and how he was honest and how they followed him from one shop to another where he worked. Now I think he's part owner. Still, I love that I can use my Giant Foods Shell gas rewards at any Shell Gas station, and this location is another great option for that. I have both heard and read many great things in my local community about their auto repairs, but I have never used them and cannot attest to the validity of these claims; however, it would be worth checking them out.

He continued to look online and found a transmission flush was needed for 90K and would cost $300. I decided to only have the 85K service work completed and told him so. As was leaving the station, I asked if the work would only be the oil change and tire rotation and he said "yes". The next day, I called him and he stated he performed the transmission flush work for $300 without my consent. We discussed it and he stated he would remove it from the bill. In good faith, I paid the extra $300 but will no longer do business with Smokey's Garage again.
