I was so happy to come across this food truck during my 5 hour stop in Vancouver. I love Vij's Restaurant and wanted to go back but my tight scheduled did not allow me to wait until 5 pm which is when they open... little did I know, their food truck was to be parked in front of the building where I had to go!!! Yeyyyyy for me! It felt like Christmas morning! I had the butter chicken and loved it so much I had to buy another one to go. I have heard sooooooo much about Vij's that I had been waiting and waiting and waiting to try it. Every time I was outside in the area, the line was ridiculously long though, and when you are on your lunch break and the clock is tickin' the lineup doesn't seem so appealing. Finally I decided to wait it out. I met a friend, so at least I'd have someone to talk to while I waited and luckily for me the line moved pretty fast. They don't have a huge selection (obviously) so I ordered up the one hot dish that was vegetarian with an iced chai on the side. The chai was good to go after I ordered so I just had to wait for my curried chick peas. As cute as the little baggies holding the iced chai may be, they are not very functional. After I got my lunch (which was like $15! Dang!) and I sat down to eat it, I couldn't put my drink down without leaning it up against something or it would spill all over the place. And as good as I look in chai, I really wasn't into looking like I had peed my pants when I got back to work. The curried chick peas with rice was pretty spicy, which was nice - its always frustrating when restaurants play it too safe and don't spice it up like they should. The chai was also good, but I felt like it could have been a bit spicier. All in all, after waiting so long to try this place, I kinda felt like it was overhyped, and I'm actually not sure I would bother waiting in line and paying so much for lunch again. Delicious. No other way to put it! I had been wanting to try Vij's food for a long time. I was visiting Vancouver alone and rather than eat at one of his restaurants by myself (cause lets be real - Indian food is meant to be shared), I ventured to find his food truck. Truthfully - I was skeptical. Firstly because things never live up to hype, and secondly I wanted authentic Indian food and didn't think it would deliver. Boy was I wrong. I got the Lucknow Lamb Kebob with a salad and it was perfect. The kebab was wrapped in naan and it had the perfect combination of spicy and sweet. It was spicy like Indian food should be but perfectly balanced. I wasn't a fan of the chickpea and puffed rice salad - would have rather had a raita or something else. But still amazing. The price is a bit high but you would pay $12 for that sandwich in a restaurant - yes its a food truck but you can tell the quality is high and the ingredients are fresh. The prices are a bit high for street food, but I reconcile that with the flavours and quality. The service is also excellent. Masala chai--this was quite sweet, but rich and flavourful. I would order this again. The lamb--it was very tasty, but a bit small for the price. It was a bit too spicy for my then-pregnant palate, but think it would be fine under normal circumstances. I had been too lazy to make the butter chicken schnitzel from the Vij's at Home cookbook when I borrowed it from the library, so was so excited when I learned they were selling it at the food truck. I finally got around to trying it at a recent Winter Farmer's Market. The portion size was actually quite decent and not ridiculous for the $11. The chicken was moist, and delicious, while the accompanying curry and bread were flavourful and everything I had dreamed of. I think I may have to get the cookbook so I can make this if I ever move away! Tip: Hit this truck early on a rainy day to avoid the lineups so common on sunny days around noon. read more

Having heard that line-ups could be long, we got there just after 11:30am and there's already a line formed. The line never got any shorter from that point on. There was constantly 15 or so people waiting in line. We waited 10 minutes to place our order, and another 10 minutes for food. I ordered the Lucknow Lamb Kebabs, which has spicy ground lamb kebabs wrapped in a chapati, a thin Indian flatbread. This was really good! The good thing is that they didn't cheap out on the size of the kebab; it filled the chapati from one end to the other. I could have more of these! For beverage, I chose Iced Chai, partly due to its presentation. It's served in a plastic bag with a straw. For a food truck, I thought it's very well-staffed. There were 4 people working inside the food truck, including a food expediter and one that goes in and out serving drinks. There is one more person standing outside of the truck, specifically to deliver the food to the anxious crowd. Flavorful food but really small portions. I felt like I paid for a appetizer size meal and less. The halibut was tasty but there was only 3 bite size pieces ... hardly a meal for the money. I rather go to "Rice and Spice" inside the food court. read more

Since moving to Vancouver everyone has told me how great Vij's is, so when I saw Vij's Railway Express I was stoked to try it. Unfortunately I found my experience disappointing. I will say the service was great and the staff were friendly so they get points for that. My bison curry on the other hand didn't live up to expectations. I first got worried on the elevator. You never want to be that person to stink up the elevator with food but with an Indian curry I fully expected to be that guy. I wasn't, in fact there was no aroma at all. I held out hope that it was just good packaging but alas it was not. The curry was just bland, not bad, just boring. I also found that naan was more like a greek pita than actual naan bread. One saving grace was the mango lassi, which was quite good and came in a unique bag. It's possible that the food is tamed down a bit for the downtown business crowd but I was disappointed. I may be back again as the menu changes but it won't be my first choice of the food trucks. read more

I was just at the Kitsilano Farmer's Market and my husband was hungry and picked up some food from Vij's Food Truck. He got the Cassava Fries with Tamarind Sauce and Samosas. We've had cassava (or yucca) fries a lot, as my husband is Latin, but the spices on these were so unique and flavourful. The combination with Tamarind Sauce (which I could put on anything) was wonderful. The Samosas were (dare I say) the best I've ever had. The wrapper dough was different, very light and airy, which is what made the difference. It came with a fresh side salad with medium spiced dressing. Very refreshing and not at all heavy, which is how I often feel after I eat samosas. What a nice surprise we had this morning from this truck! I was super excited when I heard about the truck. My husband and I waited for half an hour for our food while only 4 people were in front of us. However, it was because their computer system/ordering system and internet were all down. After the system came back online, we were able to get our food within 10 minutes. While we were waiting, they gave out free fries and Chai tea samples, which I thought was very thoughtful. We ordered lamb kebab and curry chicken. The lamb kebab was tasty, but the portion is just enough for me, and would be on the light side for guys. The lamb kebab was also done with grounded meat. Although there was enough lamb flavor, it was not the real deal meat. It was a bit disappointing since for the same price, I would could have gotten the real chunks of meat plus sides at a food court. The curry chicken tastes just like the ones from take-out from Rangoli. But the chicken was shredded very thin, so they were overly salty and reminds me of leftover chicken you would put into soup. We paid $22 for the two dishes, and for the amount of food and quality of food, we felt we were paying more for the name of Vij's rather than the food. I have never been to Indian before, but from talking with friends, it is nothing close to what railway food would have offered. So overall, big brand name, but unimpressed food. read more

Fantastic food and experience. Our first time visiting Vij's food truck, the two of us shared a butter chicken schnitzel. The amazing people running the tuck that day decided to give us an extra piece of chicken to make sharing better, which was really lovely of them. The taste was absolutely fantastic. The crunchy schnitzel works so well, and the flavours are wonderful. This was honestly not a good experience. I paid almost $12 for the Bengali Squash and Kale curry. There was definitely not enough food for the price, the box was not even half way full! The Naan was not cooked (tasted like raw dough) and some cold pre-boiled Kale was just used as garnish on top of the curry. I am no surprise to their food truck. I love my Indian food and love Viji's. I had their chick pea salad at the Food Cart festival 2014. It was fresh, light and tasted healthy. It was gluten free and vegan as well which was a plus. read more

Can be great, but sometimes it's hit or miss with this food truck. The mango curry fish is so delicious, and their chai tea with pistachios is awesome. But sometimes you'll get a big helping of fish, and sometimes just a tiny piece. Other dishes are the same - some days it's a full portion of meat, and others it's more rice than anything. But the flavours are all there. If it's outside work I'll go down again and try it, but so far that's my experience. read more

Vijs Railway Express has been my worst lunch experience of all time. I ordered the chickpea and rice puff salad yesterday- it was so overly salty and spicy that it was inedible. I went that day without eating lunch at all (Yes, I would rather have starved myself for the day than eat the salad!!). I feel like maybe they missed a step or poured on the salt or SOMETHING... because what I had could not have been normal. Anyway, the staff were nice and offered me a complimentary Chai tea (which was delicious) so I hate to give a bad review... but wow that was the worst lunch I've ever had; possibly one of the worst things I've ever eaten. read more

Working downtown for a couple of weeks and looking to try the food carts around the city. I was excited to discover this place as I enjoy Rangoli's and have heard Vij's is good. I was disappointed. I had the lamb kebab, mushroom curry and cassava chips. The lamb and naan were tasty but there was nothing exciting about it. The mushroom curry lacked flavor almost felt like a curried mushroom soup with expensive mushrooms. The cassava chips were good but the ambli or tamarind sauce was too thick and if it is a dip how can you dip a paste? The lamb kebab was better at Soho. I would not have the curry again. of course I will try it again because their menu changes according to their staff. Had a free lunch at work with Vij's. It was on from 12 until 2pm. I went at 12:45 pm, stood in line 20 minutes, in this time they ran out of butter chicken. So I went for the beef korma, very lack luster on the curry, very oily, naan bread was boring. Oh and to top it all off, 2 outta the 4 meatball things were raw on the inside. I ordered the Kale and squash curry yesterday from this food truck on SFU Campus. I got 60% rice, 5 chickpeas in total, 2 leaves of kale and 1 large chunk of squash... for $12!! Over expensive and the food was poorly served. I will admit the flavor and spices were very good. But I won't be purchasing this again. When I saw Butter Chicken Schnitzel on the menu, I was so excited. Half my family is from Germany and we love our schnitzel. I'm also a huge butter chicken fan, so I had high hopes for this fusion. I was really disappointed though. The schnitzel was quite dry and they were really skimpy on the butter chicken sauce... more sauce would've helped with the dryness. Had to be the worst food truck I've eaten from; not good value for the exorbitant price, too little food, and I thought they gave me a vegetable curry in error instead of the Kalongi chicken until I found a few tiny pieces of chicken. By then it was too late to complain since I was too far away to bother. The volume of food was comparable in size (inclusive of the rice) to that of a McDonalds value burger.
