And we brought some Bay Area friends with us. We also came in mid-week to avoid any crowd potential. Our evening began at the bar with a round of Picon Punch, the official drink of the State of Nevada. I first thought that this was a drink that you only ordered once, but this small glass of goodness actually grew on us. After closing the bar bill and looking at all the branded merchandise, it was off to the main dining room. We chose the Basque Family Style side of the menu, which at the end of the evening resulted in number of take home containers. Our 4 choices were Basque Chicken, Fish, Lamb Shoulder, and Lamb Chops. Those came with Vegetable Soup, Salad, Beef Stew, Beans, French Fries, Bottle of Red Wine, Coffee, and Ice Cream. for the Table. These inclusive choices were priced just south of $40 and that's what the bill was at the end of the evening, as there were no extras needed. OK, the included wine was a little on the sweet side, but we didn't see the need to "upgrade" as we were too busy concentrating on the food. It was all good, especially the Soup and the French Fries. The only regret was not being here on the night they served Huckleberry Ice Cream, but our Vanilla or Pistachio Almond was good enough. JT Basque is family generation owned, and we certainly felt welcome and well taken care of. The rustic decor was also cool, as was the happy energy in the dining room. Our waitress, Yemi, was honestly the best part of the lunch. She was attentive, kind, and genuinely apologetic. She handled everything with professionalism and grace. The manager (who may also be a cook) is what ruined it. He was angry, hostile, combative and argumentative right away - and what stood out most is he didn't even lead with solutions like re-cooking, replacing plates, or trying to make it right. No real apology for the food, and definitely no apology for the experience. It wasn't until AFTER we told him his attitude was awful and that he needs to leave us alone and let the waitress handle it (as he is making things worse) that he offered to either take the meals off the bill or remake them- and he didn't apologize at all, then with a massive chip on his shoulder he said again he didn't believe our food was cold. Some of us said take their food off the bill and some one of us had it remade. At the end as we were leaving, he actually doubled down on his awfulness and gave what felt like a sorry excuse for an apology. His version of "sorry" was basically: "I should have been nicer when telling you that you were wrong about the food being bad or cold." Then he said, "I'm sorry, I'm just really passionate about my food - especially when I'm told it was cold when I know it was hot."..... SERIOUSLY!? That's your apology for our experience and multiple people immediately telling you the food was cold, why would that many people lie.... The quesadilla was very flat, noticeably so (to someone who eats a lot of quesadillas from different places), but there was indeed a layer of meat and cheese in there and it was still satisfying. The surf and turf was piled high with steak and four huge shrimp. It was topped with a spicy mango habanero salsa that tied everything together. I could have eaten just that and been very happy. By the time I got to the carne asada, I realized I probably should have ordered just one taco. The meat was juicy and flavorful, the salsa had just the right amount of spice, and the onions, cilantro, and cheese added the perfect finishing touch. We will definitely be back, and next time I will know better than to order more than one taco. Or maybe I will try the burrito. I am sure it will be delicious.
