It's a hot spot in weekend mornings, so you should get there early for a table, or be ready to sip on some coffee out front while you wait for a table. The counter seating tends to be easier to come by than the booths. The service is very friendly and fast. Prices aren't too bad; pretty average I'd say. Plates are pretty good. I've been here twice, and have tried the California Omelet, and the Huevos Rancheros. So good! Great portions. On both occasions, I came with hubby and my toddler; they both look forward to coming here again as well. Parking is generally ample. This place gets progressively worse and worse. Went in with my sister on a Friday morning and there were a quite a few empty tables. Sat down, we were drinked immediately, our server came, was awkward and our foodd came out pretty quick. After that, we were NEVER checked on. My water was empty before the food came & it was never filled. We never got asked if everything was ok & it took forever to get the bill. Also their salsa is basically sliced up tomatoes & onions. Village Cafe use to be one of our go to breakfast places we would frequent at least once a week, but no more! Today approximately 10:15AM, my friend and I stopped to have a hearty breakfast. My mouth was watering for their Country omelette, but to our dismay we were puzzled as to why we were waiting so long. After 15 minutes no waitress, and when a couple next to us, who sat after we did, asked for some service and they received it, but we still waited. I mentioned to my friend that this has never happened before and that we would give the waitress another 5 minutes before we leave. The minutes passed and we still were not waited on and we were going on 25 minutes so we left! I came with two friends a little while ago for breakfast one Sunday morning. The wait was around 15 minutes, not too bad at all. The coffee is good, which shows me how well they clean out the coffee machine, filters, and maintain the kitchen. It's a good "tell" for restaurants. While the biscuits and gravy were quite plain, the homemade jelly was damn good. I'm a sucker for good jelly and jams. The service was good and my eggs were perfect. read more

I have been living in the area for 14 years and have been to the cafe several times. The food is not bad at all. My complaint is that the place needs to be cleaned up. The walls are dirty, and the dirt and grime is built up and you can see it has been there for a long time. Paul the owner is a nice guy but Paul, if I can see this much dirt in the area where customers are I don't want to know how much dirt there is in the areas that I am not allowed. Take a few days, close the place down re-paint and scrap up the built up dirt and grime. I haven't been there in a long while because I am pretty grossed out by how dirty the place is. read more

This used to be my favorite place, but it has changed ownership several times. Service is the same; slow but okay. The cook apparently has changed because some of the recipes are not the same and not as good as they used to be. Some of the little things changed like the homemade jam and salsas. One early Saturday morning the hubby and I decided we wanted to go to breakfast and this place was on our radar. And after driving past this place a couple dozens times we figured we'd give it a try. When we arrived there were people waiting/sitting outside; good sign right? I mean if people are waiting around for this place its got to be good. I put my name on the list and was told that it was about a 20 minute wait, no big deal after all good things come to those who wait, right? I suppose that they get a crowed pretty often as they had set up a table outside with mugs and coffee. And just as we had arrived the coffee was being replenished. I'm not much of a coffee snob (though I am a coffee addict), but husband on the other had total coffee snob and he's tough me a number of things about the drink, flavors, strength, taste so on so forth. Well I poured myself a cup and always have a few sips (black) before adding anything and altering the original taste. This time around I think I should have opted to add the creamer and sugar right away. The coffee was strong acidic and tasted like it had been burned. We were eventually seated, given our menus and were given glasses with ice water. Now water is kind of hard to mess up but this place somehow managed to it. They had to be serving tap water or really horrible bottle water because it was just nasty, simply no other way to describe it. I ordered the machaca with a side of fruit and asked my server to excluded the potatoes. My husband ordered the pork chops with eggs over easy. My machaca was bland...I felt like I was eating cardboard. It was completely devoid of taste (The Potholder's machaca is 100 times better). My husband's pork chops and eggs were in his words "very average." Not horrible but not good either just average and he's the only reason why they are getting a 2 star rating. Also, our server though she was nice she brought out my dish with the potatoes I asked her NOT to bring, she forgot my fruit and then brought out old dry fruit, she also forgot my salsa and our drinks were not refilled as one would hope. I noticed that one of the workers had a "Village Idiot" shirt on which said something along the lines of them doing things wrong but breakfast NOT being one of those things....ummmm I vehemently disagree, they did breakfast wrong and bad! This is one place we will not be returning to and I quite frankly don't see what all the hype is about. My husband and I will stick with The Potholder. read more

This place looked small from the outside, but it's a pretty decent size. There are about 12 tables and some counter seatings. The second I walked it, I get hit in the face with this amazing smell of food. It's like the scent of home cooked food. While sitting there and basking in that amazing scent of deliciousness, it smelled like there was a very very minute hint of curry in the air. It wasn't curry though; it was probably all of their yummy ingredients. Their salsa and jams are all home made. I tried the strawberry jam with sourdough toast. It was killer. It's pretty much smashed strawberries in jam. A whole lot tastier than the store/factory sealed jams like the ones they serve at Denny's or iHop. Don't judge the pancakes by its size. The pancakes are slightly thinner than your average pancakes, but still fluffy. Spread that sweet butter on those pancakes, dip it in syrup, and you are good to go. Ordered a side of potatoes. It's pretty much chopped chunks of potatoes with salt added to it. I liked it. I was like biting into a french fry, except it was a chunk. The Duke omelet is probably called the duke for a reason. That sucker tasted delicious. Corn tortilla covered with home fried potatoes, 2 eggs, spanish sauce and melted cheese, surrounded by pork sausage or louisiana hot links. I mean, come on! *drooooolsss* Service is great and friendly. Didn't get to drink half of the tea and they refilled it. Staff was attentive. How am I the first to review this place at this late date? Everyone should know about the Village Cafe! Wait, am I making a terrible mistake? Should I really tell everyone about Long Beach's best breakfast restaurant? It's already pretty crowded. Weekends the wait can stretch, but I come back for more because it's always worth it. The food is truly great, always lightening fast, fresh and tasty. I am a restaurant professional (I've waited tables for over 15 years) and I always wonder where the heck the Village Cafe gets their cooks from, because they seem otherworldly. I've never seen such quality breakfast food come out so consistently quick; finding good breakfast cooks is a challenge, these guys seem to have the best. Service is also great, friendly and professional. I've had breakfast just about everywhere in the LBC, and this place wins, hands down. Seriously, no joke. Everything was bland and I had to pour tabasco and ketchup to make the thing edible. The enchilada sauce just seemed like watered down enchilada sauce with no flavor. Decided to do a brunch, but ended up here and glad we did. Tucked away over in Lakewood Village, is this little charming cafe. Located in what looks like old town, USA, nestled between a lovely little antique gift shop and some other little shops. Pulled up, and saw tons of people milling around outside. good sign. However, bad sign for me when hubby is hungry and wants to eat now. I persuaded him as we saw they had a coffee cart outside for the waiting people...Nice touch! Even had Splenda. After waiting 30 minutes we were called in, sat in a spacious booth, and I ordered the "2x2x2: for $5.50 .which was 2 eggs (cooked anyway you like), 2 bacon or sausage (I got the bacon) and 2 french toast or pancakes (I got the french toast). Eggs were cooked to perfection, bacon crisyp, not too done, and the french toast was super yummy, thick, with creamy fresh butter and maple syrup. Be sure to ask for a separate plate for your french toast unless you like your eggs with maple syrup. They also offer ( for no charge!) fresh salsa or pico de gallo (sp) for your eggs. I got the pico de gallo, and it was fantastic. Fresh chopped cilantro, toms, onions, and jalapenos, all chopped up, and over my eggs was a nice touch. Coffee was perfect, not too weak or strong and they came by every few minutes with top ups. You can't beat the price Hubby had the bacon cheeseburger with fries. The location convenient, and the service was friendly. The food was bland, but the portions were big. My biggest issue is that this place is filthy with dirty floors, stains on the wall, and a dirty prep area. The bathroom was disgusting (I will spare you the details), and it was clear that no one had cleaned/checked it in a while. Our waters arrived with either a pubic hair or an armpit hair on the side of one of the cups. I was done then. I left during closing time, and it didn't seem like anyone was scrubbing anything down. I used to work in a restaurant, which meant that everything smelled like bleach after our heavy cleaning when we closed. The waitress walked out when I did a few minutes after closing. Been wanting to try this place after passing it by so many times, and finally saw the chance when they somehow didn't have a massive wait outside its doors. I'm guessing the rain had something to do with that. We still waiting 10minutes or so, because its a pretty small place and super busy. So they have a sign in sheet. And they're really good about turning the tables over quickly so to help minimize the wait. Some days they provide a cart outside with coffee for those waiting. I think that's a great touch and makes the wait bearable. Beach burger: was missing the red onions that they listed it should have. Somewhat overcooked and dry, but the cheese, mayo, sprouts and thick tomato slices hid some of that. Wish the patty was thicker too. Came with a choice of fries, soup, pasta salad, or cole slaw. I got the pasta salad. Very generous helping btw. My husband's not a big fan, but I enjoyed it. Just enough tang, and the bell pepper and celery gave the pasta salad a nice crunch. Eggs w/sausage: scrambled eggs didn't look very fluffy. Comes with 4 links, a pile of country potatoes. I think the best part of this order was the thick slices of wheat toast and yummy jam. All else was average. Served with salsa...choice of mild, medium, pico de gallo, hot. This helped spice up the eggs and potatoes for sure. Coffee @ $1.75.... Again too much for small cups...endless refill, but not great coffee. Cups were kinda dirty too from previous coffee drinkers. All in all, I do like, though not sure if I would be willing to wait for very long since I have a bunch of other choices with just as good of food and no wait. I've seen a bunch of people wait before, so I don't get the hype. Btw...only one bathroom! So expect to wait in line again if you need to go. read more

I visited this location with my lady on a Sunday morning. It was a bit busy; the wait was around 30 minutes to seat 2. Seating is determined by a list that guests write their party name on and wait to be called. We waited for 10 minutes before we realized that because the list was hidden inside and nobody said anything to us about it. Please put up a sign or something. At least there was free coffee out front for us while we waited. The place is really small so don't bring a group bigger than 4. Portion sizes are generous. The Village Cafe... I ordered two breakfast burritos this morning thinking I'd give them a chance since it's always so busy everyday. Two breakfast burritos $14 bucks. They were NOT tasty at all. The breakfast sausage burrito is FILLED with beans and it had some egg and cheese and one bite with sausage and one bite with potato. Pretty much I payed 14 bucks for beans. They weren't even good beans they were tasteless. The burrito had a lot of onion as well. They gave me a spicy salsa...disgusting. I will never go back. It seems that I've hit a lucky streak with the places that I've visited lately. Village Cafe is a hidden little gem that I cannot believe I haven't visited before...it is close to home! The establishment is small, but the staff is so efficient in taking care of the patrons that you don't mind any wait you may have to endure. For example, they have a little cart outside with complementary coffee, cups, sugar and cream for the people waiting to be seated. The staff is very attentive and prompt and every table was waited on promptly. Thus, we didn't have to wait long for our food, and our cups and glasses were never empty! I had the Greek skillet (minus onions and melted jack cheese) and I was truly pleasantly surprised by the portion and flavor of food that I received when compared to the price that I paid - great value! I just went to the Village Cafe for the first time today. I had the French Dip, it was a little bland, but I asked for some horseradish and it made it awesome. The onion rings are super yummy! I spotted lots of people ordering pancakes, so I'm definitly going back for some. I've eaten here a few times and loved it each time. I kinda am that person that once I try and like something on the menu, I don't order much else, so I don't have many suggestions other than all of the prices are totally reasonable to the portions you recieve. The staff is always so friendly but not too friendly that they will come over and keep bugging you. The other day, was noticed an older couple come in and they waited for one particular booth, which was still filled. Everyone seemed to know them, including the couple in the booth. The booth couple stood up and moved so they could have it. Turns out, this older couple had been coming here for every morning as soon as it opened for the last 20 years! The older gentleman had been sick for a month and had been unable to get there and this was his first day back. So amazing. I like the 2+2+2 and the country scramble. There is a wait so be prepared. The food was great, but very large you can easily share a plate. The prices are good, only $40 for 3 people with drinks and everyone ordering their own meals. The service was wonderful. Even with the place being packed they were always quick to refill drinks, take orders and answer questions.
