Was just in here this Friday and immediately noticed a few changes, including new ownership. Well I guess that explains the tasteless decor and strange outdoor seating setup with tables placed at the front windows of neighboring businesses. At least the menu is the same, food is good even though the hash-browns still need work. The changes in the atmosphere were hard to take in considering how unfamiliar I felt in there. I couldn't help but look around to see if I saw any old staff members and didn't see any of them. Have they been pushed out? My review comes with a footnote. And that is my wife and I were trying to find a place for Saturday morning breakfast. We thought we'd give the Village Cafe a try. We discovered very quickly that the place had tons of regulars. Which is fine as long as you don't treat the Non- regulars like second class citizens. I don't know what the qualifications for being recognized as a regular are but after three weeks we still had not made the A list. So after three weeks of being treated rudely, waited too long to place our orders because the servers were chit chatting with the regulars and getting our order wrong three weeks in a row we decided this was not the place we were looking for. It's a shame too because it's close to where we live and the food is very good. I may be losing out but to not be able to get the dish you ordered then get told, "you can just pay for one meal." I pay for my food weather it's good or bad, right or wrong. It's just not a hassle I'm willing to deal with over and over again. We've since found the place we were looking for and they've gotten a 5 star review from us. Village Cafe may not care about losing our business but I know for a fact other people I've talked to won't go there either. read more

I recently brought a friend (or he took me here) to see my "big ass clock" cafe. The notable event; they brought us fresh salsa with our breakfast. I suppose I'm a horrible Californian because I'm used to salsa at breakfast (I don't ever use it but all my friends do.) I guess by him noticing that they have this extra fresh touch to their meal, it makes me realize how not all places go that little bit extra to stand out. It's very true about this cafe that they are quite special. I've yet to have hash browns or home potatoes that are as good as I can get them here. And I love the pancakes that are a choice on many of the meals. My favorites are the omlettes and the gravy and biscuits... oh hell, everything I've had has been wonderful. But this is a stick-to-your-ribs meal place. I'm sure they have a diet plate or two but I wouldn't waste my time trying that kind of food here. The wait-people have always been great when I point and ask what other patrons are having because many of the items coming out of the kitchen look too good to be true. I used to LOVE this place! The food, the service, the ambiance. I've been coming here since I discovered this little gem 15 years ago. I loved everything about it! The food, service, and ambiance. However, it feels different now, I really wanted to give the new ownership a chance! However, after coming in for my final time this weekend, I will sadly say, after 15 years of being a loyal customer, I will not be back. The service has gone downhill. Took over 15 minutes to bring me coffee once I was seated and refills never came. The food is delicious as always! Plus plus! Glad the food is still amazing as always! It's bittersweet because the food is so great but what has made me rethink coming is the service and Jen. She was, let's say less than pleasant. Her somber look scared me. No smile, no warmth was felt when she spoke to us. It was if she didn't care for us at all. To her we were probably just another transaction... This is best place for breakfast! Everything is fresh, homemade and served hot. The staff are all friendly attentive and prompt. Sitting at the counter one can watch the food being made and see how they keep the flattop hot and clean. The place is decorated sort of uniquel, a bit random with the three stooges and a arch with painted bricks but the Villiage cafe is about the food. My veggie omlette had just enough vegs that were cut up into easy to eat bites and with their homemade salsa...the hot salsa, it made for a great start to the day. But the final homemade was the jam. Just enough of it to finish off the last piece of wheat toast and sip down the last slug of hot coffee. Come early otherwise you will have a wait but at least they leave coffee outside the door so you can make you wait a bit more pleasant. read more

It's Packed for a Reason! We started eating at the Village Cafe after our other favorite spot went downhill. I noticed the place one Saturday morning when I went to Triangle Eye Care a few doors down. What caught my eye was the rather large crowd outside drinking coffee-always a good sign! After my eye appointment I picked up my wife and we had a marvelous breakfast of Chicken Fried Steak & Eggs and Corned Beef Hash & Eggs - both with pancakes, of course. We are regulars now, routinely enjoying a Popeye Omelet or the wonderful item from the special board: Chili Colorado Omelet. All of the staff is wonderful. Sure some have an off day from time to time, but they are wonderful people as well as wonderful servers. I also love to look at the art on the walls. OK, I'm a little biased on this point, I know one of the artists personally. They have made a pleasant and enjoyable environment in which to enjoy really good food. One more thing, be sure to try their home made hot sauce. My fav is the HOT. It's deep red, medium hot and smokey. Perfect on the Popeye Omelet. read more

Went there for a lunch. Such a wonderful experience. Very nice outdoor service environment. Kat greeted us with a friendly smile and warm welcome. My friend ordered the Pozole!! So good, rich broth, plenty of hominy and lots of meet as well as greens on the side to add to this bowl of YUM! I had a roast beef sandwich and salad, fresh good and not skimpy on the roast beef. A very nice experience. Kat seems to know a lot of the customers as she called them by name and one gentleman didn't even have to order they brought him his food. I've come here with my husband for the last 5 years, maybe more. The food has always been good!! Never a bad meal. The menu items are all good, they post daily specials on a board which are always great. They're usually red chile omelettes, green chile omelettes, or machaca omelettes among other things. Those are just my favorites. All the servers are nice and friendly, one is funny... when you go you'll know who it is. It gets very busy on the weekends, even if it rains, so be prepared for a wait... I rated it a 4 cause overall the food and service was good. But the place needs renovations . I had the ham steak and eggs with pancakes ! Everything was good but the pancakes were so delicious makes my mouth water just thinking about it! This place is for regulars because they didn't even give me a menu assuming i would know what I wanted which was funny. And your cup will never run out of coffee they are on top of that . It's a hot spot in weekend mornings, so you should get there early for a table, or be ready to sip on some coffee out front while you wait for a table. The counter seating tends to be easier to come by than the booths. The service is very friendly and fast. Prices aren't too bad; pretty average I'd say. Plates are pretty good. I've been here twice, and have tried the California Omelet, and the Huevos Rancheros. So good! Great portions. On both occasions, I came with hubby and my toddler; they both look forward to coming here again as well. Parking is generally ample. This place gets progressively worse and worse. Went in with my sister on a Friday morning and there were a quite a few empty tables. Sat down, we were drinked immediately, our server came, was awkward and our foodd came out pretty quick. After that, we were NEVER checked on. My water was empty before the food came & it was never filled. We never got asked if everything was ok & it took forever to get the bill. Also their salsa is basically sliced up tomatoes & onions. Way more pico de Gallo style. Only thing worthwhile here are the pancakes. read more

Village Cafe use to be one of our go to breakfast places we would frequent at least once a week, but no more! Today approximately 10:15AM, my friend and I stopped to have a hearty breakfast. My mouth was watering for their Country omelette, but to our dismay we were puzzled as to why we were waiting so long. After 15 minutes no waitress, and when a couple next to us, who sat after we did, asked for some service and they received it, but we still waited. I mentioned to my friend that this has never happened before and that we would give the waitress another 5 minutes before we leave. The minutes passed and we still were not waited on and we were going on 25 minutes so we left! It was not even busy, but that's okay because I will tell all my friends not to frequent the Village Cafe anymore. read more

I came with two friends a little while ago for breakfast one Sunday morning. The wait was around 15 minutes, not too bad at all. The coffee is good, which shows me how well they clean out the coffee machine, filters, and maintain the kitchen. It's a good "tell" for restaurants. While the biscuits and gravy were quite plain, the homemade jelly was damn good. I'm a sucker for good jelly and jams. The service was good and my eggs were perfect. read more
