The wait staff was very friendly and the service was fine. Unfortunately the cooks are unable to cook a steak. This place tried to serve me raw steak and I know better than to send back a steak but I sent my steak back and asked them to cook it. The waitress returned my steak and it was still raw. As my favorite Washingtonian and I walked into the Village Pantry on Christmas Day I proclaimed, "This may well be the best Christmas of my adult life." I have, in part, this homely little restaurant to thank for that. The food's nothing special, in fact it's a lot like a Denny's or Carrows, though I've had better tasting food at both. Though rare, this restaurant's loveliness had nothing at all to do with the food which I was most happy to overlook. It was about enjoying Christmas on my own terms and drama-free! Finally! Our fabulous server, Melissa, must've been the most ebullient individual I've come in contact with recently. She swirled around the restaurant, filled mostly with Eureka locals, and made every single person feel special - I witnessed her hi-fiving people and she left us a couple of candy canes. Not the worlds best food or anything, basic diner. But the prices are great, the portions are good, and nothing ever tastes gross or sloppy. Wayyyyy better than Denny's. Staff is always friendly, place is always clean. Service is fast, unless it's packed then it's as fast as it can be. This local coffee shop is great! Especially if Amie is working (weekend nights). She does it all. Hosts, waits, busses, and with a smile. The owner really should pay her extra. I waited near the "please wait to be seated" sign . Directly in front of me was a cashier station and a man who had just answered the phone. He was taking a phone order. He glanced up at me then began writing down the phone order. After waiting for at least 5 mins, a gentleman who had already eaten walked up to the side of the cashier station. He saw me waiting so he waited to the side. The gentleman on the phone was still on the phone but concluded the call several minutes later. He glanced my way then back at the guy waiting to pay. He then proceeds to help the guy paying for his completed meal. I don't have a problem with the man being cashed out first. But take the time to acknowledge me and be polite enough to say something like, I'll be with you in one moment. Instead, I felt like I was purposely being ignored. It's located right next to the Holiday Inn(one of the better places to stay) so you can walk right over at anytime and get your party something to eat. Not sure what the hell happened tonight, but the manager was more interested in talking to the cooks than seating customers that walked in. When the dishwasher tried to get his attention, he still ignored us, so the dishwasher seated us and got us drinks. Dinner took way longer than usual. Seemed to be only 1 waitress, but she seemed to walk every direction except past us. She is usually great!! She walked near us several times and never checked on us or refilled out water. Then when we were done eating, we probably sat there for almost 20 mins waiting for our bill. It really started to feel like we were being ignored and we always leave a good tip...20% or more!! With just 1 waitress the manager should have been hopping all over the floor checking on everyone. He even sat at a table of regulars and bullshitted with them. I'll give you two guesses where we won't be going anytime soon....and will spread the word!!! read more

I happened to be in eureka for 24 hours, and was looking a a place to get breakfast. We stopped by in the evening for my cousin to a slice of pie, and me a beer,it was good. The following morning we came back for breakfast before heading into the tall trees. We had the same sever/host as the night before, he was very polite, and attentive. I ordered the oatmeal with fruit... my cousin got a huge breakfast that he had trouble finishing. The food , and coffee were great. It's an American diner style menu, looked like you could get breakfast at anytime. Not much in the way of food for vegans that I noticed , but the oatmeal and toast for breakfast was more than enough to hold me over until much later that day. They were very quick to sanitize the tables and keep up with the hungry people coming in, while observing the social distancing, and mask guidelines. HABANERO TOBASCO! BE MINE!! So if you look up Village Pantry in Arcata, CA, you can see all the great pictures of this little diner. I seem to have done some erroneous pic posting :) The habanero Tobasco is pictured there, in all it's glory. It was soooo late at night when we stopped in here. I wanted something to eat and can pretty much always go for a crispy hashbrown. Even though he'd just had hot chocolate at the casino, husband wanted MORE hot chocolate. Two amazing things happened while we sat here. First, I learned about Tobasco's new habanero hot sauce. F*kn awesome. It was good! I put it all over my hashbrowns and spoon. I felt it would be too hard to steal this since the place was empty, but the thought crossed my mind. It was the best thing about the hashbrowns, which were crispy-ish, but so greasy I actually took a napkin to them, and I NEVER do that until it hits a certain level of grossy greasy. The second great thing was the hot chocolate, which comes in a mini mug, has a free refill. He opted for a refill but just couldn't get the second one down. Too much chocolate! It was very rich and good. Whipped cream on top. Service was nice. I felt bad for the waitress who had to work such late hours. She did a good job! Went here for breakfast with a group of 7 before a graduation cermony. Typical diner atmosphere similar to a IHOP or a Coco's. Had a group of 7 and was seated right away. Wait staff was friendly and helpful. Prices were typical breakfast place prices and within reason. Food took a little long (but could be expected with a large group like ours). Food was hot and tasty. One plus I liked was they kept my coffee mug full. Never had to look around for a waitress to get more coffee, they were on the ball with the coffee here. Diner prices ($7-12 per dinner, $4-8 per appetizer, cheap sodas, coffee, etc.) and booths make this a grandma and pop type eatery- I know my gramps would love it! I got a side salad and seasoned fries (*nooo vegetarian options!!*) and the salad was a little overpriced, but the fries were yummy. Nothing too special, but it's open late and serves edible food. Just had an order of chicken strips they were obviously previously frozen and seemed to be warmed up like something you get from Walmart. The fries were the same. The potatos were obviously power and were overly watered down and the gravy was straight from jar of Walmart again. I ordered the prime rib 5 minutes to 1700 "which is there serving time" so it would be fresh, it wasn't. Today was my first visit. I'd driven 7 hours and it was walking distance from hotel. I had the rib eye. It was overcooked and topped with canned mushrooms. The toast that same with it had been soaked in butter and had a ton of garlic salt, making it inedible. The booths have rips and tears in them. I ordered a slice of pie to go (hearing they were homemade). I got back to hotel with no utensils. The pie was not very good. More like blackberry jam filled...there's no way it was homemade. read more

I just stopped by to get a " homemade" pie.the waitress told me that they freeze some of the pies after they make them.then o noticed when she was unrapping my "homemade" pie that it wasn't wrapped like a pie they made it was industrial wrapping like Mrs Smith or something similar. Haven't had food this disgusting for a long time. The hash browns were burnt but mushy on the inside. The bacon tasted like it had been soaked in bacon grease for a while. The French toast did not even taste anywhere close to what it's supposed to. Then they wouldn't refund me bc "the food wasn't there". Only friendly to people they know. We live in the area (but don't wear camo) so I guess the regular bleach blonde waitress feels like she can be rude to us. 3rd time we've tried here and the last. We had to listen to her complain to the guy (she knew) in the booth next to us.
